Walking 17:00 [1] 0.4 mi (42:29 / mi)

DP, warm & humid. Spent the time reading a Richard Dawkins commentary re Rick Perry - time flew.

Walking 12:00 [1] 0.3 mi (39:59 / mi)

DP, bright & dry after yesterday's gloom. Some small steps for me; no giant leaps for anyone anywhere in sight these days.

Note

Not of much of anything day physically but got to O maps mess in basement (in tidiness is power, that explains certain failings), looked over O-Ringen maps from last month, looked at running logs from late 70s & early 80s, incl. fieldwork notes for Upton winter '79-80. Found a diary re O-Ringen/WMOC '83 Finland trip with letters from Beth sent to the event center to me, an H35A.... Once upon a time, one supposes.

Hardest leg of the 5 days

Could not get a grip on yellow/open so just kept climbing on compass. Crossed biggest stony ground to L of line about 40% of the way to cp, then crossed flat yellow with just general sense of location until seeing the V-shaped cliff about 60% of the way, finally something definite. Then small knolls to right, more stony ground gradually descending, then a bit more doubt as I wasn't seeing the obvious cliffs to L & R of line. Finally, the last RF w/ boulder on straightline, just outside circle and rest was straightforward. 12:04 for the leg & finally certainty with about a minute remaining. 4 to 5 was more in control.

Surgery Day

Now behind! Pre-op BP was not what anesthesiology wanted to see but good enough to go. What intrigues me most of all was the inability to pinpoint the disappearance of and return to consciousness. I recall climbing onto the OR table, being asked to put arms on supports, head on rest; removed glasses and then "the vanishing"... IV sedation, endotracheal tube/GA, procedure and then, sometime, somewhere gradual re-awakening. Surreal. Now, some eight hours later, a modest right groin discomfort, barely noticeable if stock still. No more groin ache which indeed it had come to be at times - stopping me in my track. Maybe if I'm lucky, the left side will hold on and history won't have to repeat itself.

Later looked at WOC maps online and well as East Fork SP/Hueston Woods, WP & BG (long ago, highly vaunted spring!), lying in a pile of papers waiting for sorting for some 3 months. Time is on my side for the time being!

Eventually drove to Sandbox for DP (I sat & watched) with Beth & Dylan. Great place for a 30 m/o as it takes a while in time & distance to get into trouble and what kid doesn't find something to do in a sandbox...even picked up shiny bullet casings....

Road running 41:03 [2]

Noon mtg, so out the door around 1:45 on what-the-heck owed time. Dry westerly wind was good for 4mi. finishing east on Clinton. No such "lengthy" activity on local macadam since late May.

Orienteering (Streamering) 1:38:17 [1] 3.0 mi (32:46 / mi) +91m 29:56 / mi

Back to BB. Started on W side. Used the car as much as possible. Marvelled yet again at the variety of woods on the map w/ yesterday in mind. Added a few root stocks.

Orienteering (Streamering) 2:06:10 [1] 3.0 mi (42:03 / mi) +111m 37:43 / mi

Drove to east side - have not there been in a while. One depression in green was of concern. Got near Smith Pond with a pre-thunder storm breeze blowing thru the trees and even blueberry bushes. Put a streamer in an entirely wrong place & fooled myself for some 150m in leaving. Got to vicinity of 214 which Ernst did not find/get to yesterday. Missed on first pass...it was darkening with thunder and first drops. Found the next and simply had to go back uphill in the looming weather to see if I could find. Seems that I did but did not spend any time confirming. Back down into green and gathering storm & misread some contours dropping me on the road not where I planned to be. Humility. Got a second look at 205 for recompense. Got out of woods reasonably dry. Fun time had by all.
