Walking 1:20:00 [1] 4.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Started to walk to North Haven, visited the grocery store, got a ride the rest of way. Made a pact not to accept a ride returning, nice walk back to harbor - amazing how much more one notices walking.

Walking 11:00 [1] 0.4 mi (27:29 / mi)

AM DP, smoky, streaky sky, probably some tendrils of Earl. Big turkey tracks.

Road running 58:34 [3] 6.5 mi (9:01 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

From Pulpit dock, starting at 5p - North Shore Road & Middle Rd. Started with what wind there was behind so quite hot, later a bit ahead & then the roadside spring. All in all, hot. Legs like rubbery lead
or leaden rubber at first, better by 15'. This was maybe 6-8 hrs before Earl was to be at its closest point - the sky was very smudgy and chaotic. The wind did not really materialize.

Road/trail 1:00:00 intensity: (6:00 @1) + (44:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) 5.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

Another SPS wander, 98% shade, opposite direction from yesterday, 90F or more but fine as it was. Had BG 2000 map that was in office, Fox Forest, Pete B course. Map had virtually no route visible and circles and lines hard to see - from septic issue of '01 - spent a good bit of time looking & recreating. Hard to decide upon the skip control - all in all, good practice. Diane did her sunnier, hotter, nonsensical Birch 8.

Commentary on..."the embodiment"...
I left my 100F parking lot for my noon outing, parking in the shade under the IS 89 bridge. 30m ahead in the scorching sun was a car with windows closed, man inside reading the paper, engine on, AC obviously running. I returned 60' later to the same scenario. Three car lengths ahead was a shady spot which would have considerably improved his situation. But the man was evidently clueless to or disregardful of this possibility. It made no sense to me and provided a vignette of our legacy.

Road/trail 1:00:00 intensity: (6:00 @1) + (54:00 @2) 4.6 mi (13:03 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Noon SPS wander with Diane - had to be 96F, maybe we were 96% in shade so it was quite ok. Along bike path, under 89 to Turkey Pond, trails around
telescope bldgs, some campus, finally XC. Met the corgi lady w/ her 3
that were only too happy to be immersed in the stream.

Walking 12:00 [1] 0.4 mi (29:59 / mi)

Quick PM DP, they don't know the diff between 12' and 20' esp when this hot.
Coyote is about gone - skull, grimacing teeth nowhere to be seen. Third cloudless, windless hot day. Acorns raining, some with disproportionate "crashes."

Wood hauling/stacking 30:00 [1]

Honest to goodness work-struggle with top half of tree from a big wind a month ago - get to ground after some pondering, cut with chain saw and haul. Love the Jonsered, a bit of a beast but that's what gets the job done as long as the only severed limbs are wood. Local Bow policeman severed his carotid at home in Epping, NH earlier in year, called 911 but died before anyone came. More sweat than rain today, a sauna opportunity in some respects. Cold beer called for.

Walking 17:00 [1] 0.4 mi (42:29 / mi)

Am DP on Parson's way, looked at a ragged lot, home of a future house. Not sure why the earth movers have to rough it up if it's to sit for some # of years unused. Another hot day coming. There's a squirrel in the high oak above the house raining acorns, some of which hit hard, hard - out of keeping with the size of the things but they're falling some 75'.

Road/trail 51:00 [2] 4.1 mi (12:26 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Another SPS ramble in the shade, 98% shade. 94F in the sun, 104F when I got to car on macadam at 4:15 pm. Not so very hot in the woods & along Turkey Pond there was a breeze. Maybe 15 swimmers at the SPS boat house. In spite, the cool season is coming - more than a third back to shortest day....The squirrel was planning....

Faraway series, photos from elsewhere, #31

"Unperturbed", English Farm, Liberty Corner, NJ, August, '68

Road/trail 51:20 [2] 4.7 mi (10:55 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Noon SPS wander with Diane - drove there, stayed in shade for most part,
decent breeze, hot in direct sun. The few last runs with Di who is going
to the Manchester VA. Legs too often tired. Very locally sore inside medial left calcaneus - achilles insertion but well to the side. Ice & motrin.

Road running 59:26 [3] 6.9 mi (8:37 / mi) +130m 8:08 / mi
shoes: NB 993

Have call this weekend so used the opportunity to run home fm NHH, always good in that it leaves no choice. Found it hot, hot - did not realize at first (start 0930) but it became apparent > singlet > to removed singlet, seeking the shade patches constantly (82F in shade at home). Bit of an asterisk run in that had to stop for maybe 4' to ans a page. A start to the fall season perhaps but certainly experienced summer torpor. Moderately heavy fanny pack added to the effort. Heard track announcing at Memorial field, would guess GSG in Concord.

Walking 18:00 [1] 0.7 mi (25:42 / mi)

PM DP around Sandbox & tracks - the box has one wall that is all of 30' high. Very warm, not a cloud all day. L inner heel is noisy for some reason.
