Mapping/fieldwork/meet prep 2:48:00 intensity: (2:28:00 @1) + (20:00 @2) 5.9 mi (28:28 / mi)

7 controls with dogs, 68'. Maybe 65F, no mosquitoes. Went pretty smooth. Spent nearly 10' fixing a control & one of my eyeglasses lens came out when the small screw loosened all the way. Did not fall out, had a Swiss army knife & was able to fix. Would be most unfortunate to have that happen at an A meet.
Went thru the shooting range area where the jerks have littered the ground with shotgun shell casings & brass casings as well - latter should be reusable/recyclable.

Went back out w/o dogs for another 7c, 80'. Thought I'd left 2 controls in the garage which would have been most inconvenient but had not - had used control descriptions vs control card. Found a buck knife on the road. Some nice areas of forest, different approaches, not appreciated since mapping in a few cases. All the score controls done.

An attractive deciduous area

Road running 48:49 [3] 5.5 mi (8:53 / mi)
shoes: NB 993

Luti 5 default today, low 50s. Energy improved as I went along. Caught up
to Diane on a different loop, recovering from her GI bug after Tucson
trip .

Mapping/fieldwork/meet prep 25:00 [1] 0.8 mi (31:16 / mi)

PM DP, put out one control. Nice area, woods open, leaves still not an issue, small stuff underfoot from last big windstorm. Like the shorn look of the power line. Pleasant late pm walk with north wind, cool air.

Went to Staples to buy ink cartridges for the Photosmart printer for color map, White/yellow for Sunday - needed fresh ink. The complete color set was $75, buy one, get a second w/o choice. Now, several years of ink at the rate I use this (second) printer.

Mapping/fieldwork/meet prep 2:30:00 [1] 4.5 mi (33:20 / mi)

Put out 3 controls with dogs (30'). Was an earth mover there today, actually Earth Day.

After returning dogs, went out for 8 more controls. Mild, getting warm, blackflies out but not awful. All in all, pleasant. One streamer on ground but did not appear to be human activity. Putting out controls on a Thursday w/ meet on Sunday is a bit early but there's not an abundance of time.

One blackfly down the larynx, deer walking in a careful line and this fellow

CSU Park O at Peter's Hill in the Arnold Arboretum. Too enthused to do it optimally. Did not take good route to first, enroute asked myself where's my control card (the map) but never realized that (first one of these). Punched on side of map but not really on top of things. 15c, maybe 1.5' error. #6 the worst as I did not spend sufficient time reading map - also #11 where some people/dogs distracted me. Good energy anyway. Thunder showery but no rain at the time of meet.

Nice little area, great view of Boston from the top. Always interesting to visit The Hub, this time driving the Emerald Necklace area with its many ways: Fells, Fen, Arbor, River, Jamaica etc. So built up, seemed like a real building contest around Harvard medical complex. Finally, out Commonwealth thru Newton, dinner at a Cleveland Circle restaurant - immensely easier than driving to Cambridge, parking etc.

From drumlin Peter's Hill toward Boston, JH building 4.23mi distant according to sign

Park O start: visible Ross, Brendan, Dean S., Barb & Dave & Barb's parents (vis-a-vis Aberfeldy; missed saying hello - precipitous departure preceded by too little time)

Mapping/fieldwork/meet prep 18:00 [1]

Power line walk, map in hand. Another velvety morn.

Trail/woods running 51:25 [2] 4.2 mi (12:15 / mi)
shoes: NB 993

Slogo wander at SPS, no expectations. Trail by Turkey Pond not so nice but view & breeze was fine. Tired.

Mapping/fieldwork/meet prep 25:00 [1] 1.8 mi (13:53 / mi)

AM DP, mellow, blue. Drove in a stake for one control & revisited a few other sites; added dot knoll to map for visible white control in more interesting place. Spoke with young man moving earth under power line. Am reminded that power line land is largely privately owned w/ utility easement.

Trail/woods running 29:03 [4] 4.2 mi (6:55 / mi)
shoes: NB 993

SPS XC, finally available. a velvet-like 66F. 14:31, 14:32. Did this vs Tuesday track w/ GSR (skipping may result in guilt complex) as I was done by 4:10 & needed time for other stuff. Leg ok.

Trail/woods running 8:00 [2] 0.6 mi (13:20 / mi)
shoes: NB 993

Warmup & down - former not something I do here.

Marathon day, a brisk & beautiful beginning. DP jog of W/Y looking for additional control sites & moving a few to more creative locations.

Road running 56:35 intensity: (36:35 @3) + (20:00 @4) 6.9 mi (8:12 / mi) +130m 7:45 / mi

NHH home, 55F, lovely. Felt good but took it more or less easy. Still looking for repercussion-free running. Watched much of the BAA, course record points to good running conditions - a 26 mile "sprint".

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.75 mi (26:40 / mi)

AM DP, viewed 2 white control locations - nothing like a visit/glance for ideas.

Earth Day on NHPR, noted with the usual puzzlement &/or dismay what the earth movers are up to with their ever-changing of the sandy contours. One gash appears to have addressed snow mobile access thru a swamp etc - must be tit for tat activity.

Turkey season starts May 3rd. Heard one but can't tell a hen from a tom. Seems that hunters just exited the woods and back again so soon. Have come to read the Bob Washburn's Hunter's corner in the Sunday Monitor.

Beth says there was a gun show at the Everett rink yesterday. Would have gone - would have been interested. NHPR said that AZ, along with VT and AK, have legalized concealed weapons w/o need for permit. Bleed the archaic Second amendment to death, for all it's worth. NRA=National Semi-automatic & Concealed Weapons Club (it used to symbolize, to me anyway, the Chesapeake duck/pheasant hunter, retriever at side, dressed in Aberchrombie & Fitch with a Remington shotgun slung under the arm, in the 50s).

Road/trail 43:42 [3] 4.5 mi (9:43 / mi)
shoes: NB 993

Had Nottingcook loop in mind, start at 4p. Halfway thru, noted what looked like Mocha & then ditto for Zoe. Beth was walking them from the opposite direction. No way would they remain with her so I came home thru the woods, a bit shorter than on BBR. Left leg ok. Past week has been one of wondering what's up with it. OH A meet followed by Tuesday track might have been objectionable to it.

Knock on door earlier - BHS math teacher I'd met at A meet here in '07. He was looking for controls for a course he'd made for his school kids. I'd forgotten I'd met him. He left with some ideas about drawing a school map for BHS campus as a project for kids & may a sprint map for future use.
