Orienteering 25:00 [1] 0.6 mi (41:39 / mi)

2 BG control sites in am, cold, cold hands. Not hard to spot patches of snow.

Road running 58:47 [4] 6.9 mi (8:31 / mi) +130m 8:03 / mi
shoes: Loco training

Run home fm NHH - headwind, chilly/gray. Legs not bad considering. Feet held up well over weekend. Watched Boston marathon at noon.

Orienteering race 57:09 [4] *** 6.0 km (9:32 / km) +190m 8:13 / km
spiked:13/18c shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Long. Guess this performance rates a B. Slept poorly, not enthused about 0801 start (but did not do anything about it!). Sitting in front of Barth Hall fm 07-0719 wanting to go bk to tent for 2 hr nap when I decided I really did want to have some coffee in Highland Falls! That was galvanizing...Dunkin D & bk by 0745, right to bottom of hill below start. Lots of early activity w/ high school kids.

Clean to 6, then distracted planning 8 & lost way too much time on a trivial leg. Generally ok until last section where I fumbled 3 points, partic 16 - was on compass to where it should be, noted a control to left on knoll & took a sideline for a perusal as if that were a sensible thing to do. Ran thru green briars on way to 17, twice was looking for rock face when descrip said bare rock which proved confusing, surprising as that may seem. On 17, I'm looking for control at top of knoll vs where it was, tucked some 20m away. Finished w/ scratched up thighs which appeared to make a scene. Can recall stopping at a stream in QOC land to wash away 'damage' before appearing at finish but failed to do so yesterday. Left before results posted.

There was a 46+, Tim 54+, George 56+

Another nice spectating finish for interscholastics..

Buckner memorial with Inspiration Point on Popolopen in background...

Cadets did an excellent job, a big order w/ Interscholastics. Nice maps & venues, namely Trophy Point & ski lodge. With Sandhurst military exercises, camping was mediocre. Missed being by the shores of the lake, been going there long enough for possibly a trace of geologic change. I may pay more attn to start times in future. 355 mi home fm Liberty Corner.

Orienteering race 15:58 [5] 2.18 km (7:19 / km) +75m 6:15 / km
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Sprint @ WP, Trophy Point, dramatic setting. Sloppy, couldn't find start triangle, did not have separate control descriptions & unfolded map twice, ran to one control to check code when I knew better, wanted bldgs to be black vs grey which caused some long seconds as well. Nice course with 3 sections: woods, bldgs/stairs & open, flat, grassy running. Lots of Cadet campus activity on a spring Saturday.

Sprint S/F venue, Trophy Point...

Orienteering 31:09 [4] 3.25 km (9:35 / km) +95m 8:22 / km
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Afternoon middle at Victor Constant ski area, new place right ouside gate.
Good run except MP at #5. Must have drifted left, came down over what looked just like rockface (but was mapped as stony ground or BF), did not ck code & cont'd, unaware. Points were not much more than 50m apart. Was unaware for some hours - as at a Troll Cup maybe 5 yrs ago. Need to be deliberate re code checking! Lost some seconds navigating to 10 before 9 but caught it before costly. Best 30+, Jeff 31:14, PG 33+.

Was done w/ sprint around 1035, not recovered until 11 or so & had to be ready for noonish middle which was unappealing, esp as the long hike to start revealed itself. First control...down into green & incredible rockiness & second up, up.... Nice finish at the ski slope lodge.

Ski area lodge/finish/awards/dinner venue...

Road/trail 30:00 [2] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi) +120m 12:39 / mi
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Incl sprint prep at 4ish effort & 25' climb to middle start.

mapping 30:00 [1] 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

More trail checking, just about done. Did one old logging/cart track - from sz of saplings growing between ruts & protected-fm-wx locale, such ruts indeed have a long life.

Trail/woods running 34:12 [2] 2.75 mi (12:26 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Noon to top of Fisk Hill to see nice new view to SW towards St. Pauls. Open woods but cut up by logging trails for making the view!

Road running 59:24 intensity: (30:00 @3) + (29:24 @4) 6.9 mi (8:37 / mi) +130m 8:08 / mi
shoes: New Balance 1011

Home fm work, tired, kept under an hour. Need some rest for wkend. Ran w/ CNYO O map.

mapping 45:00 [1] 1.5 mi (30:00 / mi)

AM checking some control sites - when one doesn't need map to find, one needs input from someone who does. Nippy, cold fingers. Fairly open pine woods to start with, seems like nice variety to the BG course - but am I objective....Damn! keep forgetting streamers so as not to revisit so soon.

Track 7:49 [3] 1.6 km (4:53 / km)
shoes: New Balance 1011

SPS track, warmup

Track 13:52 [4] 3.2 km (4:20 / km)
shoes: New Balance 1011

2 metric miles: 7:00, even splits & 6:52, bit of work but necessary work hardening.

mapping 1:00:00 [1] 1.7 mi (35:18 / mi)

Back to Peasley La area, walked a few legs, greenish, subtle contours but good vis at control sites.

"The Estates at Peasley Hill" the sign says, suburbia trumps bucolia...

mapping 40:00 [2] 2.5 mi (16:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

More trail assessment w/ dogs. Nippy, slanting shafts of yellow lighting the forest. One indistinct, still present, w/ one small gap to delete.

Road/trail 50:47 [2] 4.7 mi (10:48 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Over to Fisk Hill at noon, middle portion an adventure with new trails, nice forest, open fields, a glimpse at some (obscene) manses & to & from on Pleasant St. Legs quite tired.

mapping 1:15:00 [1] 2.0 mi (37:30 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Came home & went straight to Peasley Hill. More field work if there are to be controls in this area. Parts were fine, others too thick. Generally fun putting pieces of puzzle together - one old ride on the base that was once a telephone line, now barely visible, proved most helpful with location in the subtle terrain with thickish vegetation. Very lovely moment at the end of the lane, warm, still, bird songs - 3 new houses for company, empty - some 30 lots on the lane...sad, sad. A once quiet cart track eaten up by asphalt.
