Note

Rest day.

Bitter cold day, inside-oriented, but first took a peek at S. Bow Rd changes. Have not been that way since spring. Took some promised Nottingcook maps. Found Dennis Ordway (Ordway La on se map) rebuilding an old barn. Lots of stuff inside, incl a 30's vintage auto not driven since late 50's - everything in the open barn neglected/falling apart. Dennis told me about Ethan Howard. Surmised what his daughter might do with property. He suggested a historical zone, incl Nottingcook forest 'donation', of the 3 farm families (Ordway, Woodbury, Howard). Trade building rights in NF woods for more concentrated same rights nearby. But inertia for now.

Went to Doc Howard's place - he died some 5 wks ago, age 90. He used to invite me in to kitchen where his wife spent the entire day, recliner-bound with severe Alzheimer's. His son died earlier this yr, leaving a daughter, Cathy, to inherit the old place & all the lovely woods to the west & north on the map. She lives in Maine, Bow house empty. Stopped by Jet Jennings, the other Ordway La house in the se map. She was not home. Dennis told me she has cancer & is not well. She also owns a lot of acres in the area w/ a son not a mile to the NE, also on map. Ordway is a time-forgotten, dead-end lane, probably soon to be overrun by modernity.

Took the dogs for a walk, visited the Ordway cemetary on map. Noted Dennis' father's grave & his father's parents grave alongside. Earliest Ordway grave was Nathan who died in 1834 when this was really, really rural. Also, noted again the pet cemetary of Doc Howard & wife - earliest was Sam, born around 1961, died '64 - last dog death was '83.

Went to Crescent La & took this picture

of this hideously selfish 13,000sq ft trophy house for the presumed family of 4-5 Americans living the non-sustainable, self-destructive American lifestyle. I once sat on a stump in the geo center of this house (on 9ac parcel) before built; looking north, one could see Mt. Washington. I pondered the sensible, sensitive home one might build over looking the town forest. Never did I imagine this, & ashamedly, owned, I'm told by reliable source, by a Concord physician (think orthopedist - which would fit...money & ego, perhaps). Also stopped to see Woodbury logging just east of Great Hill - certainly not clear cut & done with conscience but nevertheless, hard on O terrain.

Road running 44:20 [4] 5.5 mi (8:04 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

Bill Luti course starting at 4:30. Did not run at noon. West on Clintin, still light, thru SPS w/o cars & sidewalk on Pleasant - much better than running home in dk re traffic. 27deg - saw a young woman running in shorts, open running top, no hat, don't think gloves either. Felt ok, hurried along to get home to feed dogs, long day for them.

Road running 44:07 [2] 4.1 mi (10:46 / mi)

w/ Diane, actually cold. Ran south & then aimless wander thru much of downtown Concord, a few places I'd never been - by train tracks, behind Pill bldg etc.

Orienteering 1:05:00 [1] 3.0 km (21:40 / km)

Left work early, out to pick up controls, last fm 11/1 meet. Began a few minutes after 4, bk in dk, chance for-a bit of night O. No camera, could not find so missed some pics. Lots of lit up dog eyes. Got paged about dk, sitting on rock well in forest, talking to DMHC surgeon, bizarre in a way.

Dogs had reflective bright Orange - would have been hard to mistake them for game. Got bk to car, Zoe jumped in, I shone light in her face to remove vest - her mouth was full w/ putrid deer vertebrae. This am on walk, it was stomach, a leathery snack - she practically refused to give up.

Trail/woods running 29:21 [4] 4.2 mi (6:59 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

SPS XC, 2 laps at noon. Colder than I expected. Had turtle neck & lined running top + legcover for first, then t-neck - was hot after second. 14:50 & 14:31, felt ok.

Road running 1:03:58 [3] 6.6 mi (9:41 / mi) +138m 9:06 / mi

Out the door around 0810, nice & quiet on Sun am. Warm, too, t-shirt & shorts after 10'. Ran BBR, Bow Cntr, WHH & Allen - have not done so since spring - & I consider a Sunday route & not really a priority in summer.

At 1 pm, met w/ Bow Open Spaces people & walked some of boundary of Johnson Rd Town Forest, 243 acres, newly designated town property. Has hx of logging so bit thick, some decent contours - can join w/ Nottingcook which is across the road. Met, Ron ?, town forester, which was useful/interesting. He works for at least 4 towns, involved w/ logging apparently as much as w/ forest conservation/appreciation.

mapping 45:00 [2]

Had intended to do more after the walk but that took time, I got wet feet & it got colder. Working around Lyford deck house, Peasley Hill property, thickish & wet - prob shouldn't bother.
