Orienteering long 23:32:00 [2] 45.0 km (31:23 / km) +6200m 18:35 / km
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

US Champs rogaine, Allegheny SP w/ Sharon Crawford.
2nd mixed vets to Smiths. Some 45k, 6200' climbing.
Should have done better; some complicated compilation of considerations as explanation. Sharon has done some 20 rogaines, this, my second, ? last as too much beating up upon the musculoskeletal system, save some for future use perhaps. Functioned well as team. Good nav discussions/agreement I'd say. We both were guilty of faulty thinking on one night control, fixating on disappearance of stream at reentrant bottom when we were looking for a spur further up reentrant. Didn't need a stream to find control & we were surely in the correct reentrant as entrance was short dist fm rd & culvert. This caused loss of 2 control points & less-than-optimal route to next.

I carried too much wgt. MSK system held up but I was very careful not to fall/hurt feet. Rt achilles fine day after, also left 1st MTP ok. Lft upper hamstring pull re-exacerbated but prob not a problem. Would do well to discuss experience w/ partner over a cup of coffee after good night's sleep. Was away to Pittsburgh 90' post-finishing. Risky driving, a few momentary lapses of att'n, crossed some painted lines...

Night O is novel, fireflies, night revelry persons on road section, AM birdsongs lovely, fatigue awful but temporary. Carried a lot of food, added to wgt. Like idea of travelling very light, making more use of water stops & possibly hash house. I carried too much baggage. 2 women got 1300 pts in 12 hrs - flexible, mobile, young. Weather always different, changing considerations re what to carry. Very wet w/ one downpour in mid-pm that was depressing. Clothes should have been in plastic bag - there were plenty of extra lg map cases at HH. We never dried out. Competition was somewhat a disappointment (when I absorbed results/did the numbers) but great experience incl visiting cousin in Pittsburgh.

Around Lynn's Fox Chapel neighborhood - brick studies in upper middle class conformity.

Trail/woods running 31:00 [3] 3.15 mi (9:51 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

Jogged the SPS 5k course w/ David & Diane. Will be an incentive to run a bit harder for set distance on nice course in future.

To Pittsburgh tomorrow for weekend ROC rogaine in Allegheny SP. Wonder how much of a musculoskeletal meltdown I will experience. Plan to shop for 'attractive food' near meet site. Recall that Charlie & I made it ot the hash house late ? 2300 quite beat in May, '04. No idea as of yet whether or not we'll include HH in our plan - I'd like to.

Trail/woods running 29:27 [4] 4.2 mi (7:01 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

at SPS after work, 92-3deg. Turned out alot better than I thought it would. 2 x 400 'warmup' on track in sun then onto trail which is mostly in shade. Hopped in stream after for maybe 5' which really was pleasant. Walked across football fld w/ gentle breeze & actually felt cool. Felt good about this workout given mindset at start. Could do this at noon at this temp & survive.

Trail/woods running 27:58 [3] 3.15 mi (8:53 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

After work in Nottingcook, loop I did before WMOC '06, not much since. Bloody hot, little energy - heat (90deg) plus yesterday's 'hike'. Dipped in the dog's pool. Left them home as it would have put them over the edge.

Orienteering 3:05:00 [1] 9.0 km (20:33 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Rogaine practice at Bear Brook. Could only last 3 hrs (scary perhaps)...shady however hot (near 90 by end), buggy, generally thick woods. Used 1979 local meet map, did not need to use USGS, it was hard enough w/ leaf cover. Twice came bk to Bear Hill Pond which dogs appreciated...pretty scene w/ light S'ly breeze. Saw a zillion ants atop Bear Brook Hill. Found some new paths, marvelled at boulder field on slope of bear Hill. Wondered how we found controls there bk 9/30/79, 9.7k course done in 95' by PG, some DNF's. Came home, took a nap.
