Walking 1:04:02 [1] 1.55 mi (41:19 / mi) +128m 32:53 / mi

Elm Brook Pool with W. Bright, white, calm, maybe hi 20s - all told, nice. 1 car at end of road, spoke with no one. There was a sled track with two people, one towing, 1 walking beside. Thought maybe a young family. Finally they were the only tracks and had not returned. So I did get to see - two ice fishing people too far out on the ice to tell much else - but no third, of any size.

Walking 39:37 [1] 1.04 mi (38:05 / mi) +22m 35:44 / mi

Nottingcook with W. Hadn't been there in a while. Lots of foot prints, some tire tracks, no skis or snowshoes. Had 4 pm sun last part - bright, blue cloudless day, wind was down, still cold though. Nice outing. January almost done.

Went to Concord for a brief look at the ice sculpture contest. Cold, noisy fun for a bit.

Walking 43:59 [1] 1.14 mi (38:34 / mi) +8m 37:45 / mi

With Beth & W at SPS. Wanted an easy surface, minimizing hidden ice. Wandered in and out of woods and fields. A super cold and windy day. SPS nordic was out skiing on just-enough-snow w/ groomed sections. Fun for effort before making a hot coffee stop by town pond and then calling it a day. Even now, TGIF has impact. Big beautiful full moon last night.

Walking 1:06:14 [1] 1.69 mi (39:11 / mi) +15m 38:08 / mi

SPS, gray, calm day. Walked across fields onto the XC course which I used alot in past. Took a walk onto a peninsula of old hemlocks which was gorgeous. At home, followed the course of the Turkey River fm Little Turkey Pond to the Merrimack. Met 1 woman with old golden. Saw another on the field ahead - also woman/golden combination.

Walking 1:05:29 [2] 1.42 mi (46:07 / mi) +80m 39:15 / mi

Winant Park - hadn't been there in a few years. Started on John Winant Tr., then Joan Winant Tr., finally Rivington Winant Tr. back again to John W's Tr to parking. I had been on most of that before but my recollection was not very good - only on a few parts, incl. fine view of SPS and distant hills.

Meeting walkers and dog walkers to lesser extent has become a mixed bag - mostly good for the latter. One crazy guy came out of nowhere & shouted to the hills "go away, dog, get out of here!!" or similar. W., not tethered, had gone to say hello. Not two minutes later, when he said his nice walk had been spoiled by loud noise, I didn't bite my tongue. I find myself less tolerant of some people s/p the Trump era. I did wonder if he might have been mentally challenged. Hard to say in the brief encounter.

Walking 1:07:57 [1] 2.02 mi (33:38 / mi) +55m 31:01 / mi

Started sunny but as I drove to EMSP, it was getting gray in the SE. All gray around time we started. Very quiet. Met 3 people going to dike, one on the other end with a yellow lab and a lady with < 2 y/o golden - good fun for W and her dog. Seems a great place for ice skaters being very large and varied but never see any or signs that say no skating.

Walking 43:39 [1] 0.77 mi (56:42 / mi) +16m 53:16 / mi

Off Parsons with W. Went there at Beth's suggestion since it had been awhile, therefore refreshing. After the small frozen pond and the cluster of boulders, I recognized almost nothing until exiting the woods. I had decided that a bit to the left of the sun was the default return direction. The woods are hemlock and mostly all knolls as well as generally open. I did come to a marked corner for the Meadowsend easement and had been there a few times in the past. But, again back into nothing that I could ID. At one point, I could see I'd only gone 0.25 mi - it seemed twice that. There were footprints and some paths I did not recall. Finally, I just stuck to a direction right toward the sun and eventually saw part of a house. I crossed frozen swamp, thinking that the most direct route to the road. I walked up an embankment onto a significant trail, looked left and was most surprised to see that I'd entered the forest about 20m from where I exited. All that in 0.6 mi. Felt like 2 mi.

Walking 1:04:02 [2] 1.64 mi (39:03 / mi) +59m 35:07 / mi

Hammond NP w/ W. It was a NW nasty cold morn yet bright & sunny. Got in woods which was OK. Trees were creaking and groaning as they do in cold wind. Still later, with more shelter, it was routine. Went to beaver pond for a look and, when I got to Eagle Tr., went down to the brook. When I got to the field, I sat against a tree in warm shelter. Got windier as I crossed the field. Nice to get a bit out of comfort zone.

Walking 56:01 [1] 1.18 mi (47:21 / mi) +78m 39:18 / mi

BHS with W. January cold kind of day. NW biting wind on Turee. Found shelter in the woods. Walked along the stream - finally found a place to cross with help of sticks but W wasn't up to it. After about 10', I found a place to cross back & spent rest of time nowhere new. Too bad I didn't get to poke around on the other side. Silly dog, I thought she'd be across in no time.

Walking 53:20 [1] 1.31 mi (40:43 / mi) +30m 38:01 / mi

SPS with W. Didn't want icy paths or even any contours to speak of. Had the generally snow-free field in mind. First walked thru woods with firm crust on a new route. Winter woods offer extended views and more range of walking with swamps etc being frozen and bugs not an issue. But I did end up spending too much time on paths which were largely ice under scant snow, so being in need of my taking care. Left yak traks in car intentionally. Go figure.

Walking 52:43 [2] 1.15 mi (45:50 / mi) +72m 38:22 / mi

Parked in Marjory Swope lot, walked partway around Jerry Hill & over the top.
Open oak woods devoid of snow for most part. Trail on north side was icy but ok enough in woods alongside - tho where steeper, I needed to hang on to trees whenever available. Pleasant chat with one lady at the Penacook Lake vantage. Snowing lightly at end. Nice walk, impressive hill.

Orienteering 1:04:29 [2] 0.99 mi (1:05:09 / mi) +92m 50:33 / mi

@BBSP from Podunk parking lot w/ W. Icy trails of use at times to convince me I was where I thought I was. Generally knew where I was most of the time
though contours and some boulder mapping in the area immediately west of parking are vague, soft, inconsistent. There are big contours there - nothing new about what I saw. Woods were pretty open and white ground emphasizes contours. A wall of green-leafed forest is another level of difficulty. What snow there was (3" guess) was packed. Saw one person in parking when leaving.

Returned on River Road by the St. John Baptiste cemetery where the BB women/children were eventually buried.

Walking 58:39 [1] 1.13 mi (51:53 / mi) +43m 46:24 / mi

Great Hill with W - sunny, NW breeze at top which seemed chilly after all the lee. Finally approached the car from above and a bit behind it. Didn't see anyone. W looking for something.

Walking 45:20 [2] 1.07 mi (42:22 / mi) +28m 39:11 / mi

At SPS after NHH, started at the boathouse. Nice day, T just over 40F. Not interested in walking on ice when there is open water as well - tho, here, others have shown it ok to do so.

I set off into the woods with maybe the far fields as goal. Kept to bare woods when possible, eventually saw an old path as well as old prints in the snow. It took me back to a different field. I was far from walking across the forest.

A few laps "jogging" at the end which was a new discovery.

Man-made object, something primal about building a shelter in the woods.

Walking 41:17 [1] 0.8 mi (51:37 / mi) +18m 48:15 / mi

With W. to brush dump. Gray, windy. Later some sun, showing me the way. Entered woods, very little recognizable. Walking what seemed straight but for changing direction some due to openings. Finally saw a small man-made depression, an old box of some type, then a pile of rocks and finally a knoll I knew. By then the sun's shadow showed the way N. More fun than walking around on the path.

PM ride to Loudon area for usual attractive NH countryside. Dark right at 5.

Walking 32:19 [1] 0.62 mi (52:07 / mi) +36m 44:09 / mi

To BHS with W. Rained hard all morning, windy, too, on coast. Patches of blue on the way. Still quite a bit of snow at BHS in open areas. Still potential for skate laps. Eventually walked along the stream I could hear from a few hundred yards away. W wouldn’t come at end, there was another dog and then another set of things to smell.

Orienteering 1:13:23 [3] 2.04 mi (35:58 / mi) +144m 29:30 / mi

Carye Forest in New Guilford. Brown, 14c, gray, dreary day. Felt lonely out there. Not a bird or squirrel seen. Did have Willow and she was good in that I never had to stop/look/wonder where she was. Went to all of them w/o any significant time loss but also I was going slow, even if that was about as fast as I could go. I've a long way to go. Climbs to 4, 7, 13 were hard. Needed a tree when I could get a hand on one. 1 modest fall. #6 was off my 1/75 map - couldn't make the printer do what it needed to do. Did half 6 and half 7 on a 1/10 map which now seems quite small. Did we once make do with 1/15...

Did not have the O app - my phone is full for one thing (threw out Strava weeks ago - time for a new phone) and I was not in a frame of mind for new technology learning curve - if it did have space. Did get splits the old-fashioned way.

Nice to get out of Dodge. Nice map, woods & course. Lots of work. Good job, Jim!

Walking 55:00 [1] 1.3 mi (42:19 / mi)

To Old Stumpfield Rd. with Beth & W. There was adventure but passed up - ie, walking everywhere on the far-reaching white - but not anxiety free. Came upon this sight on the road. Lacking perspective, I thought it was run-off from the Christmas rain. Further along, it became clear that the reservoir level had risen some 5’, leaving its icy waterline at forest edge. Even further along, while on the snow/ice covered road, there was a hollowness to our steps- 1.5” ice over some margin of air over ground - something to do with the way the water receded.

Managed to forget the 305 again. Another mostly gray, calm day. We did have a spot of sun when we sat on leaves on a south-facing slope for a snack.

Hammond on Life Trail (and not a sign of life) with W. Gray, sunless, calm. Snow packed so easy footing. No one there. Nice walk, fine trail. January is a winter fact of life and makes spring all the more welcome. Yet it has its own moments.

PCP visit today - nice to see him. It had been about one COVID year.
Renal a'gram came of it.

Didn't see a soul.

Walking 23:54 [1] 0.56 mi (42:44 / mi) +26m 37:21 / mi

Nottingcook in search of yesterday's lost Yak Trak. Missed where I came out of woods but easy to find where I went in, saw that both footprints had YTs on and voila, it was about where logic said it would be. It was the only place I went thru a bit on the edge of the sinkhole.

Saturday Jan 9, 2021 #

Note

Two dog walks, one out back, pondering swamps - the other around the Elementary school, ice-free asphalt, no people or cars, nice to be out at end of day.

Walking 57:50 [1] 0.61 mi (1:34:47 / mi) +21m 1:25:37 / mi

Out back with W - to contours and on top, some biggish hemlocks to thin the snow cover. Not sure where I was exactly. Used to be able to tell. Got a Friday at 11 sign out which caught me by surprise. Lasted about 25' after which my phone died. And that was that.

Walking 1:40:49 [1] 2.41 mi (41:50 / mi) +94m 37:18 / mi

With Beth & W. Fine enough day for January. West wind though, leading to return in the lee of the dike. Saw no one or dogs which was a first. W getting harder to corral at end of walks.

Walking 24:53 [1] 0.52 mi (47:51 / mi)

With W at BHS. Short but necessary walk in these Covid and politically uproarious days. Walked toward wind across Turee and then left, around the fields, in the woods. Nice stream there that I saw last summer for the first time. Got near the higher field, W heard the nordic skiers training. Got her on the leash before she ran off. Seems to be good skating in at least one place at BHS.

SPS with Willow around observatory woods & fields. Surprised to see enough snow for decent skate tho not prepared.

Walking 35:00 [1] 0.8 mi (43:46 / mi)

With Beth & W on Robinson Rd. trail. Gray again but eventual sun. Not as much icy surface as I expected.

12 PM

Walking 31:23 [1] 0.72 mi (43:35 / mi) +11m 41:36 / mi

Daily mind-healthy dog & owner walk. Mostly ice, Yak-Traks being sine qua non. Uninspiring gray upon gray above, same for white below. No falls & W was tamed before time-of-reckoning, ie, time to get in back of vehicle.

DD drive as the day turned to dusk and to dark: N fm Concord center, finally L on Hutchins (after all the 'No Exit or Do Not Enters' by the prison & quarry), to W. Parish, Broad Cove, Briar Hill, S. Rd to 77, Iron Works & home. Pretty amazing landscapes and these doors were still present years later. Optimism but nowhere to go.

Walking 34:07 [1] 0.75 mi (45:29 / mi) +15m 42:50 / mi

With W, after a wet, slushy 2" snow. Not much to say for today wx-wise.
W. had a ball with a mom and young daughter walking on Stoneybrook. Mom was amused, her daughter took some adjusting. W is always a long way ahead of me before I catch on - in this case the presence of these two on the road ahead. And then she wouldn't obey me, her fun was not to end.... I needed the mom to get my leash on her.

Forgot to turn the watch off with the commotion. Strava has an editing fxn. Don't think I can do that thru Garmin.

Walking 45:45 [1] 0.99 mi (46:13 / mi) +5m 45:30 / mi

With W, warm enough, calm. Saw two people and 3 cars/trucks when leaving - maybe NYD walkers - which would be a new angle for the brush dump. Maybe hunters but I think not. I never cease to marvel at vegetation changes over 10+ years. Wandered in a white pine "grotto" that didn't exist when I was mapping.

PM DD ride to north of Concord, long look at Franklin Pierce homestead and then into north Concord. Surprised & pleased at all the woods around, so close to town center.
