Walking 36:16 [1] 0.97 mi (37:23 / mi) +43m 32:52 / mi

With Willow, cool & windy. Felt pretty good, got to T junction. Last day of May - it came all too soon, spring has gone all too fast.

Delightful moment

Walking 31:00 [1] 0.9 mi (34:27 / mi)

Early enough with Willow - breezy. Met the same woman as last time with her two dogs. W barked at something in the woods, the lady's bigger dog appeared and I had my answer. Had the biggest black bear I think I've ever seen on the terrace last eve, along with smaller one, maybe a mate, right at 5pm as a Zoom presentation was beginning.

Beth & W about 9a. Not cool, early enough though. Got to 90F today. Met one lady with 2 dogs - friend of Michelle's.

Walking 55:39 [1] 1.32 mi (42:10 / mi) +20m 40:16 / mi

Old Rte 202 segment. So much greener, water down from last visit, maybe a month ago. What a contrast to the early days of spring - miss them already.

Nottingcook with B&W. Early, overcast, cool. Yesterday got to 90F, ouch.
Did this loop essentially w/o a cane - a first. Always some concern about a trip/stumble which I haven't done the past three months - a few close calls but gradually more confidence. W delighted in rolling in dead deer before we could bring it to an end.

On the Henniker-Warner Rd.in the middle of the woods. Had looked at the road fm the north end in early spring - "closed Dec 15 to Apr 15". The narrow gated dirt rd. climbed steeply, uninviting for the XC 70. Coming from the south today, the last part was downhill. Encountered a truck from the north and had to back up close to 200 yds., Beth drives, I navigate. Then thru Warner and east on smaller roads than the usual.

Last day of PICC line per ID yesterday. No more IV abx.

At 251 Fiske, thinking back, say, 35 yrs. Carlisle still lovely as ever. Particularly on a May day such as this was. Also visited Judy Farm Rd. Also Curve, Heald, town center.

Stark Pond rec area in Dunbarton - a new place to stop for walk, run etc.
Lovely. Tenney Hill Rd. needs revisiting too. This lifestyle change, for various reasons, provides new views even as it eclipses others.

Single cane 30:00 [1]

From end of Millstone Dr. on an afternoon drive. A dead end, quiet as can be. Finally remembered to reinvigorate Strava. A perfect May afternoon and no black flies on such a road.

@ Turee with B & W - windy west wind. Later at Kimball, less wind, peepers in adjacent swamp were vociferous. May is halfway over. Still no Strava, forgetfulness to blame.

Single cane 34:34 [1] 0.7 mi (49:22 / mi)

At Nottingcook with W around 6:30. Warm day, rain imminent. Strava was offloaded or whatever happens when phone storage is full up. Happens fm time to time until I clean house best I can.

Walk with W around 6p to bog off Stoneybrook. Walk seemed much easier than the last which was my first post-op walk there. Ups & downs and irregularities were of lesser focus as before. Very pleasant evening, some wind in the trees now & then.

W. walked off when the gate was accidentally left open - first time. Beth drove off to look in the neighborhood. I stayed home whistling loudly now & then which works if she's within distance. Beth came back 10' later & then went in the woods out back to look. I drove off and eventually found her sitting in the passenger seat of a young women’s car (“I can’t leave her here”) a few hundred yards up the road. She’d called the police who came just as I was driving back.

With Willow on a leash end of day. Didn't want woods/bugs so elected for the road. Walking the dog who wants to stop and sniff all too often isn't for me, especially getting tugged too much. Venue where we can move according to our separate wills is sensible. Had a brief sun shower with some hail. It was dark/rainy midday but improved by 4-5pm.

As I started this entry, I looked up saw a bear, looked again and there were four, mother and 3 cubs. Hard to get them in one frame, Willow's barking was causing consternation and their spreading out.

Br. Londonderry Tkpe. Still windy, not to cold. Walked the route from the other day, marveling at the change and the small brook that roared. Wonder what happened to the beavers, suddenly homeless. Forgot to stop Strava.

Last BG a year ago Mother's Day. It was my last and I finished last of those who completed the course. 41 years ago, I ran my first, finishing first. We got Willow on Mother's Day, a year ago - the same day as the BG.

Went to Hopkinton to Old Rte 202 for our afternoon walk. Exceedingly windy, cold, one snow flurry that looked like smoke blowing across the water. First we went to the boat launch area and walked to the end of the road. Definitely raw and bracing where tree protection thinned. Then drove near the canoe launch area in the lee, walked to launch site and then end of Old Stumpfield and back.

Great Hill with Beth & W. First time in a long time. Did ok, sometimes holding onto small trees trailside.

Note

Afternoon drive to Henniker then north. Passed thru Bradford and Sutton, almost like where have we been, having seen so little of what we saw today. Gillingham Dr. and Lake Massasecum were highlights. The more we see of NH, the more we admire and are pleased to be living in this small state. Likely we'd say the same about VT and ME, western MA, too - but this is right out the front door.

Watch out

Classic beauty

Br. Londonderry Tkpe. with the usual. Parked on White Rock Hill, walked to Rookery Tr. and then to the beaver pond. Saw one group of MTBers and 2 joggers. Returning the stream sounded louder, and rounding the final curve, indeed it was and the small bridge we had crossed not an hour before was covered with fast water with a c .4’ gap at the far end. The water was too deep and fast to feel comfortable trying, my being cane-dependent and Beth 79 (and a definitely skittish dog) was asking for trouble. Went 100 yds upstream but nothing promising, fresh logging making progress discouraging. About 100 yds below the bridge, we made do with a small bit of wall, one tree, a tiny bit of dry ground and one 18ish’ trunk across the fastest, deepest part. For future consumption, the road was being eroded. When we got to car, we learned that the people who lived at the upstream end of a large interconnecting swamp system had removed the beaver dam causing the flooding. When we walked by the bridge some 35’ later, it was 4” above water and the gap easily enough negotiated.

Much more than bargained for!

Too much to attempt

Not bad for 79!

Dry ground

Last of Old Stumpfield with Beth & W. Gate was open which surprised us. Walked to last point on water. Really nice pine woods at the end. Old ruin, stone walls made from many big stones. We wondered who and how long ago might have been mobilizing and placing these stones. Many hadn't budged an inch. Defines back breaking and calls to mind Frost's Mending Wall. Breezy.

Note

Went to the boat in S. Berwick with Beth & W. That was enough. Visited with Paul and Joyce. Up & down the solidly placed step ladder but care & effort req'd. Beth is not one to make sentimental comments but noted how many memories reside there - coming on 40yrs this fall for memories.

Drove back via Dover & Durham/Rte 4. As fine a May day as could be, T lo 70s. Much greener at/near the coast. We took a few side roads, admiring NE countryside & homesteads. Nap pretty much first thing when we got home.

Slough & back with W. Warm for a change. Drove around the block with top down, May 1st, convertible season. There may have been black flies - too few to tell though.
