Y between work & Liz G's retirement party.

Cardio 20:00 [2]

Stretch & walk.

Cardio 15:00 [2]

Weightexercise workout 30:00 [1]

Note

Right upper hamstring is sore. It didn't like yesterday morning's "no different from any other time" at the BHS track. MSK issues are often like that. Just sitting in a chair brings some complaint. So light going for awhile.

Cardio 21:30 [3] 1.5 mi (14:20 / mi) +94m 12:00 / mi

BHS, start 6:55, cool enough, dewey. "Heat index" to exceed 100F today per radio. Approached with "take it easy, be even" which I was for the first 6 laps, all around 3:30. But on the 6th, got right ham "awareness" & stopped after. Have had it from time to time but it has been awhile. I was the proverbial basket case in 2011 before the O-Ringen & Scottish 6-day, attending PT for a month before going to Europe. Am glad to see I wasn't so stupid as to try to complete the w/o today. First time, however, I've quit on it. Seems it was the first day of school and kids were flooding in starting around 7.

Forgot to turn Strava off. Sat on an ice pack at home then to Portland to pick up sails.

Weightexercise workout 30:00 [1]

Wheel barrows of soil from drive to side yard on a 90+F pm instead of AC workout in the Y.

Weightexercise workout 40:00 [1]

Y after work. AC quite nice as humid heat has returned.
6 AM

Cardio 28:23 [3] 2.27 mi (12:30 / mi) +1m 12:29 / mi

BHS track, earliest yet, start about 6:35. Cool, dewy. Energy OK but time still a bit slower. Distance shown as 2.27 mi when it has always been 2.1 and today the exact same venue. GPS trace more ragged than usual. Must be Monday.

Lawn mower guy showed up early on, zigging and zagging and looping. Threw a bunch of grass on the track. I had to move aside twice. Had had second thoughts of getting this done this AM because of being awake from 3:30 to almost five but when light came, I just put one foot in front of the other so to speak. And, a lot of moonlight last night.

Kayaking 30:00 [1]

Archiving kayak use, this time on Turee. With books in hand, equanimity & solace are the prime benefits. There was the usual excellent sunset but we left before the full moon rose. More than 30' but this is training in quotes.

Hiking 2:00:18 intensity: (57:05 @1) + (1:03:13 @3) 3.06 mi (39:19 / mi) +380m 28:22 / mi

Cardigan Mt, West Tr., hazy, calm. Pretty much up, a good effort. Spent about 45' at the top & returned same way, missing the S. Ridge Tr. turnoff somehow. A family mountain today. A lot of classic NH towns & scenery on Rte 4. Bought a fishing rod from a road side yard sale, from a colorful old NH citizen. Took a shady nap at Proctor athletic fields.

Bear Brook @ end of day & week. Went out the door forgetting O shoes which occurred shortly before arrival. Made Crocs work and for the most part I even put the "failed" footwear situation out of my mind. The terrain is soft/rock-free for the most part. Dead pine twigs & small branches comprised the "hazard". Few mosquitoes due to dry terrain. BB terrain almost always calls for close contour scrutiny. Fun & games, more mountain bikers than anything else.

Cardio 28:11 [3] 2.1 mi (13:26 / mi) +1m 13:24 / mi

BHS, early eve for a change. Pleasantly cool. Near full moon. Decent energy but time slower than a few previous, incl those on a hot morn in the making a week or so ago. Initially, had the place to myself. Maybe 10' post starting, one truck & young man, then 2, then three then a whole football team (c. 30), there for practice. So some entertainment and moon about full.

Felt energetic tho I spent 2 hrs in the car back & forth to the boat in Portsmouth area and 6 hours working on it. Then home for about 45' staining parts of house, then to the track.

Mocha = 16yrs , 1 full month today.

BHS, 55F & foggy. Certainly seemed like end of summer. Surprised I was 30" behind last time and also slower than the two before that one given the cool temp, reasonable energy etc. I've got it so the exercise is just about 100% identical with each visit.

Note

Fun to look at NAOC information, results etc. Seeing 10 year classes doesn't
resonate though - at least with me. Too much physical change over such a time span. There were 51 in M65 on the long. Why not have an M70, running the same course. Or am I missing something?

Go Hans and Sharon, fine NEOC vintage!

Orienteering 1:49:44 [1] 3.32 mi (33:03 / mi) +123m 29:38 / mi

W & SW part of the Mega @ Pawtuckaway, perfect day, lo 70s, dry, sunny. Went with Beth. Agreed to meet at car at noon, giving me a bit less than 2 hrs. Didn't do as much as expected. Spent 15'+ crossing Mountain Brook twice. The first was right away, the brook entering Mountain Pond. I walked up it 150m, still not finding a suitable place. Dry feet but concluded total foot immersion was necessary, which became mid-calf. The other was a beaver dam crossing (looking back - foreground is the last and shallower part). The dam was as small a symbol as the crossing was big. Started on top of it & on downstream side but it was chock full of sticks, and the water dark and even deep. Couldn't afford to fall either time as the map was not in a map case. I was considering going around all the large wet area (which was flooded brook) when I noted that I could walk on the upstream side of the dam, free from sticks and with clear water. Tho it dropped off, the bottom was even. So steady progress & it was behind.

Some really nice woods: reminded of Harriman (even incl forest floor grass), Mt. Tom, and Burnt Mt in places. The features were not very well mapped in the most western, peripheral and little used part of the map. Only got back to Mountain Tr. as it was getting on to noon, leaving quite a bit for next time.

Event: NAOC 2018

2 PM

Cardio 27:34 [3] 2.05 mi (13:27 / mi) +1m 13:26 / mi

After work, start 2:15. 86F & overcast, had a wet singlet and water to pourover my head. Slept poorly last night. Had planned to do this before work but Mocha was responsible for little to no sleep between 4 and 5a. Felt sluggish but still the best time. Off to New Druham at 4p.

NAOC begins today...sigh.

Orienteering 1:39:04 [1] 3.21 mi (30:52 / mi) +197m 25:55 / mi

Family walk along Squam Lake shore on Five Fingers Tr. I was reminded how special NH lakes can be, esp on picture perfect days.

Wednesday Aug 15, 2018 #

Cardio 27:38 [3] 2.1 mi (13:09 / mi)

BHS earliest yet, making sure to clear XC practice. Warm/muggy. Decent energy. Paying more attention to lap times as competitive basis, competing with my accumulated time. Forgot the cell so no Strava app which keeps track.

Pawtuckaway, had "The Mega" map from 9/11/2005, a course with 203 controls. Did 40, the first 20 on the island. It rained hard, becoming "torrential" for the last 30'. Also got quite dark but I could read the map & see the terrain adequately. Don't recall if anyone got all of them. I was reminded how careful one needs be in this terrain. Last there Oct, 2017 - seemed longer.

Cardio 27:44 [3] 2.11 mi (13:09 / mi) +1m 13:07 / mi

BHS before work. No sun whatsoever. Pretty good energy, 5" better. XC kids (c. 30) showed up for pre-season training. As did other teams and lots of cars. BHS is no longer a peaceful place!

Orienteering 1:56:49 [2] 3.54 mi (33:00 / mi) +112m 30:03 / mi

Bear Brook, gray day, first I was going then not going due to rain fcst but then decided I just had to go, fcst or not & was rewarded w/o any rain til I'd left. Parked on Podunk at start of Lowland Tr, took it to where it ended on the old BB #1 map and then went up & up in logged semi-open woods. Headed for a pond I must have last seen 20 yrs ago & then into the open logged area that offered expansive views and an abundance of blueberries. Then back in to the woods finding a few features making my way east. Then another 'oops' - I was thinking I was in the middle of nowhere when the Lowland Tr. (not drawn on the map) was at my feet again & so then began a different mentality/approach. Hard to figure out where I was, there being too many boulders and trail curves too nonspecific. Did see a marsh about 60m in but it looked bigger than the one mapped. Features made sense for the most part, even in the overgrown rides but never entirely convincing. Always went directly east and then noted a distinct shallow depression with a rock face & boulder I'd been to before. Managed to locate it on the map. Cont'd east to the marshes at the west base of Bear Hill & then onto Hedgehog Ledge Tr, & the trail on the north base of Bear Hill back to car. Map

The logged area with a blueberry treasure trove. The only mapped feature is a wide, shallow, flat-bottomed reentrant.

so far. Cooled off by Turee launch after & then went to work.

Orienteering 1:51:11 [2] 4.28 mi (25:59 / mi) +126m 23:48 / mi

Bear Brook early, last of the mist. Started out on Lost Tr. with plan of going over first hill and making my way to the Lost tr. again & then the reservoir & return over the main hill. Did OK going (some of which was lightly logged woods that were open & even clean), contours being about all there was to work with until a series of marshes. Looked for the path too soon, figured out what was going on & cont'd to the path. Took it a bit E/NE & then back into the woods, heading for the top of the largest hill. Not sure why I was too far L and then came to the large clear cut (exiting at a blazed corner), not on the map. I was not putting it together, made my way NE, dropped down then up - what was going on was not apparent until I could see the gps route on Open Topo. I had crossed my outgoing path though that was not recognizable. Came out on Lost Tr. not 100 m from where I'd left it, to my surprise. "Oops, a trail" quite literally.

Fun & games, given the fact that it was pretty much unfamiliar forest, poorly mapped with so-so contours, 40+ yr old map - thus some adventure & questioning. Got home in time for reasonable departure to the crafts fair at Sunapee.

Cardio 30:17 [3] 2.09 mi (14:29 / mi) +1m 14:28 / mi

BHS first thing. Grey, no sun, still wet from heavy rain, 73F. Felt good, did get inside right thigh twinge as possible forewarning for getting too "frisky" so I backed off.

Went to Turee as it started to rain. Had a chat with a fellow who owned an identical car about sealed transmissions & their service & fate.

Friday Aug 3, 2018 #

Note

Left for Bear Brook at 3:45, after work & a nap, with the idea of doing something like last Fri. It was sunny enough at home tho I knew of the prospect of rain. On the way, the immediate fcst was a severe thunder storm and flash flood watch. It very quickly became dark and then first drops on Podunk Rd. Drove to the intersection where I planned to leave the car & shortly the rain fall was torrential. No sane choice but to give up & depart that forest crossroads. First visit in 40+ yrs with literally not getting out of arm's reach of the car. Enough deluge to slow traffic to a crawl on way back. Got the very best/closest parking spot at the NHSLS in returning. At least buying some wine worked out fine. First thing in the morning should be the mantra when possible for training in hot, humid wx.

Cardio 31:02 [3] 2.09 mi (14:52 / mi) +1m 14:51 / mi

BHS track - SloGo morning. Got there at 7:20 & already warm in the sun. We had tremendous rain last night. I thought there'd be more residual cooling but not so in the open. I was hot by the 3rd 200 but wetting my singlet in the local rest room sink made a decent difference. Felt better in the 200s. Read the paper in the shade at Turee after.
