Walking 1:00:00 [1] 1.5 mi (40:00 / mi)

Walked the Chadwick CE with Ken. We'd done it 2 yrs before but it was freshly blazed and so we moved right along. The old dam portion, part of which I'd not seen, is one of the more impressive Bow stone findings forgotten in the forest.

Walking 1:00:00 [1] 2.5 mi (24:00 / mi)

KU walking - last there possibly as far back as 1968. A most impressive place. Visited the Student Union and Athletic Hall of Fame and drove many of the campus roads. Incredibly quiet on a Sunday morning considering some 28k students. Fun to find Jim Ryun’s memorabilia in the HOF. He was the first HS miler under 4’ and HS middle distance icon of my day. Also old stars Billy Mills, Glenn Cunningham and Al Oerter attended KU.

Walking 1:05:00 [1] 2.5 mi (26:00 / mi)

In Hesston and along the route of Santa Fe trail as well as in Abilene. The SFT, visible in a few places, spoke of the travails of early settlers. The Eisenhower home, library, museum and grave site were most inspirational. Ike was "my/your father's Republican" - 1956 has fast-forwarded to 2016's Trump the Obscene.

KS must also be known for friendly, helpful people - we keep meeting them.

Walking 1:20:00 [1] 4.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Different dawn, orange-red instead of yesterday's mist. Made my way to Hesston proper to Old Hwy 81 and then back thru old neighborhoods to 301 Lake Vista.

More walking in Lindsborg, a Swedish-founded town in the center of KS. Stood on nearby Coronado Heights for a distant view. No plaque to explain geology or history though. There was one particular view of a mostly straight road that disappeared at the far horizon. Almost exclusively perpendicular roads on a flat surface is one KS theme. Fun to experience the several towns we visited today and esp the Smoky River Mill that was instrumental in Lindsborg's founding. Turning wheat into flour with the tools at hand - another ingenious episode in our saga.

Walking 2:00:00 [1] 6.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Hesston, KS - 3 walks around the lake in Dyck arboretum - first around dawn with mist (not light until 0730), then with the group and the third near sunset. Warm here, in the 60s, and certainly not not what I expected. An abundance of green grass and light yellow leaves yesterday looked so much like spring. Wouldn't have believed 6 miles but I can see that the smart phone gps is accurate. Forgot the ant stick for the 310.

Walking 19:51 [1] 1.0 mi (19:51 / mi)

Token mile at BHS track around 5:30, breezy & chilly. 4 laps, changed direction after 1 and 3. Was down to the wire on 20'/mi. Turee was looking November.

5 yrs ago tonight, Hans B & I were crossing Casco Bay on a very similar type night, windy & cold. Life becomes more & more "been there, done that" ...

KS tomorrow, a definitely different destination.

Weightexercise workout 35:00 [1]

At Y before meeting Liz & Diane.

Sunday Oct 23, 2016 #

Walking 45:00 [1] 1.5 mi (30:00 / mi)

At BHS and along the shore of Turee. Gale winds on coast & breezy by the pond. Had sights on Kimball with Beth & M but grandkids came by & plans went out the window.

Walking 45:00 [1] 1.4 mi (32:09 / mi)

Beth met me at Audubon for an October afternoon perusal. Injured/caged raptors to ponder: bald eagle, peregrine falcon, two winking barred owls, a red-tailed hawk and one or two others I don't recall. Left the camera in the car. October's splendid colors are the year's last gasp, catch as one can.

Walking 1:15:00 [1] 3.3 mi (22:44 / mi)

From Rye Harbor in search of some groceries & a bottle of wine. Training days not. But walking notices more. Got the boat from Woods Hole to Rye via Gloucester. Can't get Garmin Connect to upload the gpx file so limp along until I get it solved.

Note

It was eventually very windy on the starting side on our crossing in 2014 (and practically calm once past the high point). There was one memorable fellow in flip flops and a few others in shorts & T shirts as wind demanded sheltering. As it says above, not a problem if properly prepared. Second the definitely worth it comment. Looking back to the high point.

Gallery

(taken from an upstairs room yesterday)

I spotted an owl
But not a spotted it was.
Matter of fact
Bar none,
It was THAT one...

A winkin' at me
From its perch in a tree....
As if to say "hee, hee
Take a picture of me".

So I took the picture
And left for the day.
The owl however
Did stay and stay.
But finally did leave,
No tricks up its sleeve.
It flew off empty-handed
As the red squirrel reprimanded.

Walking 1:04:00 [1] 2.5 mi (25:36 / mi)

Near CH after picking up reports @ Concord Cardiology. To water tank and then to top of Wynant Hill & back - got near Fisk St. parking & had to retrace. Ended up behind Granite Ledges. Saw 3 solo women, one dog.

Weightexercise workout 30:00 [1]

To the Y after tho I did not want to go inside but it's important to do it & be consistent - which I am not.

Walking 40:00 [1] 1.5 mi (26:40 / mi)

Walked over to the power line around 0200, too wide awake for anything else. Bow is generally under a canopy of leaves but here was the Milky Way and the classic, standout constellations: Big & Little Dipper, Orion, Cassiopeia and a few others. Seldom these days do I get to stand attentively under 'a wide and starry sky'.

And at noon was another phase of the day at the Town Pond.

Walking 35:00 [1] 1.0 mi (35:00 / mi)

All I can come up with for the past three or so days but fun in that it was with grand kids in autumn splendor in Nottingcook. Went to Woods Hole with Beth Sat & Sun for a CCA gam but did not get ashore Sunday. Had the alarm set for 0610 but rain on the hatch & some fallout from the party nixed that. Lots of wind returning but that's not exertion either. Appt with cardiology today to assemble tests for surgery at some point in next 4 mos but couldn't posit a guess as to when.

Walking 1:00:00 [1] 1.5 mi (40:00 / mi)

To Great Hill and back with Beth & Mocha. Great views these days - traded for loss of some lovely forest...two very different endpoints. Met Bob D coming back.

Walking 1:04:30 [1] 2.51 mi (25:42 / mi)

Around Kimball Pond on shorter white blaze. One of those October days one hates to see end: "O hushed October morning mild, Thy leaves have ripened to the fall...".

Damn 310 stuff: "the server encountered an internal error that prevented it from fulfilling this request". Back to getting the Garmin communicator plugin to be recognized which was another problem. Screen shots til I get some "patient time". A world apart from October gazing.

Dam today
Last spring

More color elsewhere but this caught my attention as much.

Walking 55:00 [1] 2.9 mi (18:58 / mi)

From Park & Ride on Clinton into SPS XC to astronomy units and back on Silk Farm. Distance fm smart phone gps.

Rowing 54:00 [1] 1.5 mi (36:00 / mi)

At Hadley's with Beth. Still a most annoying struggle to get the route from the 310, maybe later. Two gray days, not much activity except for the row and driving there & back! Screen shot to get around some new software problem.
