Skiing - nos (classic) 34:16 [2] 2.02 mi (16:58 / mi) +7m 16:47 / mi

In Ashland on the White Mt. CC GC. Wished I had time to turn around & do it again but needed to be social on NYE. Two other skiers had made tracks to ski in over about 60% of the loop.

Weightexercise workout 45:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (10:00 @2) + (25:00 @3) 2.3 mi (19:34 / mi)

Treadmill & wgts at Y. Was drizzly-yucky at 2:30 post work. Earlier in the day,
I might have opted for a run outside but still downright drab in any event.

Road/trail 24:48 [2] 2.11 mi (11:46 / mi) +15m 11:31 / mi

Funky day of light rain-snow for most part. Was surprised this morning when I stepped outside & found more snow (nearly 4") than appeared to be. Did not go anywhere til 3:45, drive was not plowed til around 1pm - not a work day or that would have been a problem. Well, we forgot about snow impact for the most part in New England until now.

Checked the Concord Community nordic FB site but too little snow for grooming. Went to BHS & tried the plowed parking lot which was passable with about an inch cover post-plow. Was just getting dark, but lights came on making it appear more civil, it being a generally raw PM. Went to the small parking lot & that was better than the first part, mostly for being level. Having the 310 led me to do two miles - otherwise would have stopped sooner. Nothing ventured, nothing gained - worth keeping in mind.

Road/trail 1:15:19 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (54:00 @2) + (6:19 @3) 6.01 mi (12:32 / mi) +147m 11:39 / mi

From NHH thru local neighborhoods to Iron Works & into SPS thru the woods off Clinton - came to the familiar stone wall & old path. When it fizzled, I went straight as in years past but kept going & did not hit the loop. Finally, I headed more left & eventually saw some windshield reflection in the lot on Silk Farm & knew where I was. Much farther than I recalled (been 4-5 yrs). Sat shows near miss. Dragging always it appears. A cold enough day for a change & snow tomorrow. Covered the burn piles & maybe will be able to ski locally.

Looked up Saturday's Rails-to-Trails encounter, Missisquoi Valley RT along the river of the same name and Rte. 105. The river photo was taken just before the 118 turn off to Montgomery. The trail is 26.4 miles long & would make a fine countryside 'marathon effort' on a spring day should the sap be rising.

Road/trail 32:00 [2] 3.0 mi (10:40 / mi)

At NHTI, first with Mocha. Drippy, gray day. Minus 27F in Jackson Hole this morning with loads of snow per phone conversation with Bruce.

Road running 27:50 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (17:50 @2) 2.0 mi (13:55 / mi) +35m 13:12 / mi

Walk-jog on Newport waterfront. We drove north from Burlington to St. Albans, then east to Montgomery. Stopped at Jay Peak for lunch, then drove on to Newport. I’d passed up several excellent opportunities for a run, especially a rails-to-trails path that wound thru the landscape. Newport waterfront was attractive enough & as calm today on Lake Memphremagog as could be. 2 mi was all I had time/interest for. Beth napped, along with Mocha in a parking lot. Was feeling badly about dogging any kind of outside "adventure" as we passed thru such lovely countryside. Newport brought up a distant second, much better than nothing however.

91 to 93, thru the Notch to get home.

Road/trail 46:59 [2] 4.19 mi (11:13 / mi) +25m 11:01 / mi

Along North & basically back thru neighborhoods and a bit of the bike path. Calm and gray, the Adirondacks really stood out.

Three items yesterday: a full moon along 89, the clever enough warning "Drive hammered, get nailed" and this.

Road/trail 46:40 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (36:40 @2) + (5:00 @3) 3.47 mi (13:27 / mi) +86m 12:29 / mi

To end of Hope & into Nottingcook "upper portion" looking for something different. Bounced off the Peasley development & then into just plain woods
which usually is the most "fun", eg wondering where I'll relocate. Foggy, T & shorts. Three deer ran in front of the car on South Street w/in 100'. See one, quite likely more but still surprised by the trio. 310 export gpx is always maybe 2' less than what the gpx shows in AP - puzzling. The Hope street sign had water droplets glistening all along its bottom - seemed both prophetic & pathetic.

Road/trail 34:58 [2] 2.7 mi (12:57 / mi) +100m 11:37 / mi

Knox Rd. TF, a gray, 40F day. Busy week, distractions left & right. Temp
to be in the 60s tomorrow.

Tuesday Dec 22, 2015 #

gym 50:00 intensity: (30:00 @1) + (20:00 @2)

Weights & cardio. Cold rain outside made the Y appealing. 30+ MPW, all things considered, really isn't a given.

Note

Solstice thought

The solstice sun dips low
Leaving wane shafts on a bank of snow.
Yet come out of the winter dark,
And let us embark
On the voyage around
’Til light, again, be found.

Winter solstice is the "pit's bottom" as far as light is concerned - but then, quickly, it's brighter with a blanket of snow. But when?

Trail/woods running 1:45:38 intensity: (40:00 @1) + (1:05:38 @2) 6.33 mi (16:41 / mi) +246m 14:53 / mi

Nottingcook tour, gray, getting warm. Met a lady on the trail (contemplating a steep rocky part) on crutches, stopped to talk for maybe 10' but forgot to turn watch off. Found new surveying streamers and cut saplings for some house building that I knew vaguely about. Need to know more - i don't like mysteries and new groups of houses appearing de novo. Speaking of, there were two new houses on Crescent.

Track 38:13 intensity: (16:20 @1) + (12:23 @2) + (9:30 @3) 3.0 mi (12:44 / mi)

CHS track right around sunset, nice time of day there - - no roots, rocks, or other ways to trip or even need to be cautious. Met a young fellow whose dog could readily jump over the near-twice-as-high fence & who needed a jump start which I warmed up to doing eventually. The BMW is a different kettle of fish, battery (prob about $350 to replace) itself not at all easily accessible but there's a remote positive/neg 10' from battery under the front hood (which there's rare need to lift up). Away he went. Close to 30 mi with another day to go.

Had a BOS moonlight/solstice option in Knox Rd. TF tonight but notice was too late for my flexibility mode.

Road/trail 1:18:18 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (58:18 @2) 5.88 mi (13:19 / mi) +159m 12:17 / mi

West End farm trail, from Carter Hill Orchard to Off ramp exit 3 on 89 where Beth picked me up. NW chilly for a change but in the woods & downwind for the most part. Saw a fair # of walkers. One of the nicest forest trails in the area. Previous visit was 11/04/13, longer ago than I would have guessed.

Road/trail 1:06:34 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (46:34 @2) 5.59 mi (11:55 / mi) +10m 11:51 / mi

After work, beginning on Commercial St., along Horseshoe Pond, crossed a RR bridge, over 93, down to/thru NHTI & back via Ft. Eddy & underpass.

Ran at least 2 5ks at NHTI around 7’/mi pace about 4-5 yrs ago, in the middle of the decade. But 'taint decadence that leads to lack of energy presently.
Med side affect maybe, lower mileage than I think perhaps. 20 mi past 4 days, thighs felt sore (as in 'this is a chore') after. So that is suspect.

Mostly new ground for jogging. In spite of the SloGo (walk-jog at quite a few points), I did garner gold after a fashion, having brought the camera along, a just-in-case mentality. Dry with pm sun for a change.

Trail/woods running 32:02 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (22:02 @2) 2.01 mi (15:56 / mi) +93m 13:56 / mi

Opposite Cilley vet with M for a walk first then my goal was to cover 2 mi. Not really dressed but plan for the day was 4. Followed a blue blazed tr. to its end nr Norfolk/Rolinda intersection - nice little Concord city council addition. Onto Concord for errands.
5 PM

Road running 23:22 [2] 2.01 mi (11:37 / mi) +41m 10:56 / mi

Around the three schools in a rainy dark mode. Needed the no-excuses 2 mi. for 4 for the day. About 40F and crappy, really a gray day. Took M for a walk around the elementary school first. Wore a moderately heavy foul wx top, still chilly to start.

Left out the "another sleepy night" item - Beth & I talked much of the time between 3:15 and 4:30am.

Wednesday Dec 16, 2015 #

2 PM

Road running 58:17 [2] 5.19 mi (11:14 / mi) +74m 10:45 / mi

Old default route from NHH parking along Pleasant, thru SPS, and back on Clinton. Leaden legs. I'm having mediocre sleep most nights for whatever reason. Had too big a lunch today as in party at work, too.

Proceeding east on Clinton around "head-home" time is noisy/congested but I got to see the facial countenance of each & every driver with the strong slanting sun lighting up their faces - kept out of their somewhat distracted way however. Plan to get 30 mi this week but ideas that seem/sound easy aren't always so for any number of reasons. No excuses....

Road/trail 1:05:37 [2] 5.84 mi (11:14 / mi) +186m 10:13 / mi

Bow Bog loop, another unseasonably warm day. Ran in running shorts.
Saw someone collecting something by the BBR PL - thought it may have been winter berries but could see as I got closer a lady picking up roadside trash. Stopped to chat with her briefly - turned out she was one of the town selectmen fed up with the mess on her daily walk. Saw Ken D at the very end - passing in his truck, had wondered if I might see him. High point in the loop is at Mike Sambo's mailbox. Lots of rain last night, transitioning to early sun & then rebound to cloud. Fcst was for windy but it never did get windy during the day.

310 min/mi pace was too slow much of the time. At one point, I picked up the pace more than 1.5 min/mi changing fm hill climb to level. It took more than a minute to reflect the inc. GC says 65:37 but gpx export says 72:11. If it wasn't confusing, it wouldn't be "facile" technology.

Weightexercise workout 35:00 [3]

Cardio at the gym. Forgot the right outside stuff for rain/drizzle which is what it was.

Note

Driving in Vermont yesterday. It ever so briefly said 67F but no time to capture. Also notable was the "Drive hammered, get nailed warning" I89 and the full moon, especially after so much gray sky.

Sunday Dec 13, 2015 #

Walking 22:00 [1] 1.0 mi (22:00 / mi)

Went to BHS at dark for a reflective R&R - had the place to myself to start with. Then came a lady - just about too dark to see faces, she made a comment to that effect which was worth a mutual chuckle. I was walking CW, she jogging CCW but darkness dropped its curtain quickly. I see women exercising there 3 or 4 to 1 male - basically better creatures in most regards.

Road/trail 1:15:08 [2] 4.69 mi (16:01 / mi) +162m 14:28 / mi

From 7 Allen to BES essentially in the woods - mild, too mild. Forgot about the swamp that the SM trail crosses but was able to get to BCR w/o any trouble though passing thru private property. Had Beth pick me up - not interested in BBR.

A 68 y/o kayaker drowned in Turkey Pond Thursday. Mild, perfect day, no ready explanation but evidently couldn't swim to shore - too far, too cold, too something. I stopped by the Turee Pond launch Thurs around 3:45 & noted as lovely a sunset as I've seen anywhere.

Weightexercise workout 1:00:00 [3]

Grovelling in dirt to dig a 55' ditch (for propane line) with a many hundreds pound Ground Hog/"ditch witch" that had no drive train incorporated, much to my surprise. Too old for the task, as in enthusiasm=energy. Got it done via considerable effort but not entirely deep enough everywhere due to predictable rocks & roots. Some pick & shovel still req'd. Spent a good part of the day on & off on this.

Walking 30:00 [1] 1.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Another piddling day re training (more an archival entry) but fine otherwise. We had a meeting in Needham, over around 12:40. The plan was to take a run along the Fenway & then visit the Gardner museum. By the time we arrived (incl 6mi RT extra due to street sign confusion), it was clear I couldn’t do both.

The ISG museum is most interesting (tho a bit dark for reasons made clear). Also interesting to see two of the quarter-century long empty frames from unsolved theft, a well-kept secret over many years.

Tuesday Dec 8, 2015 #

Walking 25:00 [1] 1.0 mi (25:00 / mi)

Not much at all - a pre-dark walk, some of it with M.

Monday Dec 7, 2015 #

9 AM

Walking 30:00 [1] 0.8 mi (37:31 / mi) +7m 36:31 / mi

Walk with Ken to see we could determine that the far end of the unblazed
boundary was the actual point. Distracted, did not turn watch on for return trip - too bad because we were walking on compass providing an opportunity to see how well we could keep to a course.
2 PM

Roller ski 23:50 [2] 2.16 mi (11:02 / mi) +1m 11:01 / mi

Conant school area roller ski. Good place - flat, smooth for most part, little traffic. Actually fell twice, in the exact same spot, more than puzzling. No ski pole gumming up the works, no ruts etc. Not much after, I noted that the nut had come off from the left from axle but the wheel was still locked in place so doubt that had anything to do with it. First time, I was up w/in 20" and the second, took my time, removing a skate. Sat view shows less potential than I thought but can get a 3/4 mi loop or so.
3 PM

Trail/road (grass) 14:25 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (9:25 @2) 1.06 mi (13:36 / mi) +2m 13:31 / mi

SPS around the fields by the track. Tired legs, not clear why - skate did not require much.
9 PM

Note

From yesterday's south-of-the-Cape visit -
Sunday sunrise at Padanaram.

Orienteering 1:06:30 [2] 3.46 mi (19:13 / mi) +120m 17:21 / mi

At Upton SF on way home from Mattapoisett. Erie almost given that it's been some 25 yrs since I was last there & 35 yrs since the Oct., 1980 A meet and 36 since starting mapping there in Nov., '79 - bridging a big chunk of time. Had a so so copy of the 1/15 map stuck in a map case, parts of which shed as I folded & refolded the map. All the trails are still there plus a few new ones. Got as far as Dean Pond. Boulders & stone walls are all there, heard "where'd ya' been" more than once. 1/15 symbols are so tiny & 1/15 covers a lot of terrain. Of course, one can't drive in much at all anymore. Lovely in places under pines usually and thickish in others - no surprise for a MA forest. Lots of users - I believe no hunting permitted in MA on Sundays. That should be the case with some NH forests but is not. Mid 50s today.

Saturday Dec 5, 2015 #

3 PM

Road running 24:35 [2] 2.25 mi (10:56 / mi) +4m 10:52 / mi

From Triad to Mattapoisett waterfront. Boat not being covered resulted in annoyance which led to distracted lethargy. Gorgeous day though. Went to Colleen & Jim's in S. Dartmouth for night: 3 cats, 2 dogs, 3 birds, 6 Saabs, 2 Beetles, 1 22 y/o child at home. Fun time - too much wine, too.

Friday Dec 4, 2015 #

Road running 47:27 [2] 4.01 mi (11:50 / mi) +140m 10:41 / mi

From White Park, another mild day but the sun really failed to shine inspite of a bright forecast. Had heard of a Concord fire on Rumford St this morning on the radio - 1 death & 10 out of a place to live. Had heard of this street but could not place where in Concord. Did think I'd be curious to see the place but not search for it. From parking, I ran between 2 UNH law school buildings & turned left on the next street & there was the burned house 200' ahead. Covered the length of Rumford which delivered me to Blossom Hill cemetery by the Concord prison. Entered that & was soon passed by a funeral procession, hearse & a line of cars. An odd polarity to the street today. Much the same run last January 22nd.

For some reason, Garmin Connect won't give me the screen for the gpx file tonight.

Note

Too much noted two years ago, but not as full of hot air as presidential candidatescandidates
2 PM

Road running 1 [0] 0.0 mi +81m null / mi

GC got its act together, gpx accessible. 2' added for unclear reason. Climb is most likely more accurate vs my estimate. Negated time & distance in favor of leaving what I wrote above.

1 PM

Road/trail 45:34 [2] 3.5 mi (13:01 / mi) +87m 12:05 / mi

Bog Jog as NW dryness was arriving but surprisingly mild given what NW fronts usually are. Ken was in his drive & I stopped to talk about various, including chain saws, always of interest in wood stove-heated homes. Ended being over-dressed as the warmth of the expected cold became apparent.

Also passed the site (twice today, incl DP) of the maggot-covered, discarded deer carcass of nearly a month ago. Just fur and distal legs, 4 plastic ice bags and the large container used to get it there remain. I'll be the default one to clean it (plastic) up in the spring - still too impressionable: even some long dead maggots visible in the upside down top (no longer upside down).
3 PM

Roller ski 12:56 [2] 1.01 mi (12:49 / mi) +1m 12:47 / mi

Changed the spacers for less friction but not sure I could sense it. Expectation was a mile w/o poles. Almost no gloves either but a smooth, level parking lot isn't much of a fall risk. Need more ankle support than the boots I'm using provide. Really just working towards a routine. El Nino says low snow anyway:).

Weightexercise workout (cardio) 40:00 [3] 3.0 mi (13:20 / mi)

Rainy, gray day so back to the Y, 3 days in a row. Raining pretty hard when I left work at 2:30. Spent the time on the treadmill. Don't agree with the various measurements of speed & distance but it's easy to make up a challenging workout.

Tuesday Dec 1, 2015 #

Weightexercise workout (cardio) 40:00 [3]

Y: Cold rain today for much of it. Climbed 500 stairs then 150 x 2 spaced out at about 60 steps/min. I find it more tiring than the elliptical or bike. Then the elliptical, able to read or watch news helping time pass more unnoticed. All vs, say, getting the HR up running across Harriman terrain in perfect weather, the mind completely engaged in the activity at hand.

Found some smaller spacers for the roller skis that should reduce friction.
