Road/trail 53:34 intensity: (26:34 @1) + (27:00 @2) 2.8 mi (19:07 / mi) +119m 16:54 / mi

At Walker TF from Meeting House parking. Took a look at Eagle trail before BOS meeting tomorrow. Scouts' signs, while nicely made, are too high and too many. Got near Hammond & headed back cross-country but all too quickly came upon an old logging road and then a smaller footpath taking me to Old WH Road all too soon. Used nav back to start on 305 with confidence, finally.

Note

Pretty much a rest day, tired in the am. Went to Merry Meeting Lake which usually results in running the last few miles but not today. Took the grandchildren (6 & 3) on a walk into what I told them was Magic Woods and to the Magic Stones (2 mini-Stonehenge types), uphill and logged/semi-open. Discovered a small pond as well - not more than 15 yds diameter, 3' depth with frogs and small fish for more wonder. Took it myself earlier in the summer. Quite an adventure for little people.

Yesterday's route - to #2, walked right over the ruined wall twice per the gps trace; 'overmapped' doesn't do the term justice. SW section quite the challenge - small contours occ hidden by summer growth & lack of tag lines interfered with clarity.

Orienteering 2:20:36 [2] 5.28 mi (26:38 / mi) +156m 24:24 / mi

Bear Brook, used CSU training from last fall. Started near Hayes Field - first part hard due to thickishness, relative lack of contour detail and lone boulders. Kept away from the logged area, got into the area of dense boulders & did ok - lost contact at the end & made my way E being thirsty/tired. A good-sized group swimming at Bear Hill Pond. Nice day, no bugs to speak of.

Weightexercise workout 35:00 [1]

Before running
3 PM

Road running 44:41 [2] 4.01 mi (11:09 / mi) +38m 10:50 / mi

Another slog after work and Y. Felt ok initially heading into breeze and humidity was low but got too hot on Clinton going downwind in sun & became a semi-desperate shade seeker. Watched Tracks the other night, a bit sugary in places but talk about functioning under a glaring sun in a most inhospitable desert....

KImball Pond, still early, nice NW breeze across the water. Went CCW on East Side Tr. and didn't recognize a fair amount unless looking back. Took the spur to the end (thought it was a peninsula) and was surprised to see that it connected with Loop Trail. Tried for a clear photo of a curious doe but couldn't get focus. At parking, saw a couple of happy lady kayakers just setting out into the lovely morning.

Almost late summer

Weightexercise workout 35:00 [1]

4 PM

Road/trail 58:34 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (38:34 @2) 4.3 mi (13:37 / mi) +64m 13:01 / mi

SPS after Y & work, kept to shade. Nice west wind when I was on the track. Track surface is spanking new. Saw a woman with two young yellow labs - chatted with her a bit. Walk & jog is my MO for the time being, maybe when it gets cooler.... Goal at outset was 4 mi. At Audubon, visited the raptors again - the bald eagle is 27 years old, captivity since '88.

Rain arrived yesterday with a vengeance. And darkness is coming in its usual subtle manner.

Saw a Denver boot today: $315 in fines and $100 impoundment fee & needed to be dealt with within 24h & it was about 30 hrs & counting.

Road running 1:09:33 [2] 5.68 mi (12:14 / mi) +167m 11:13 / mi

Old Bog loop early, still cool, dark as in impending rain, some thunder but rain
hasn't happened 2 hrs later. Too much walking. This used to be bread & butter; now more like something that needs re-acquaintance.

Weightexercise workout 35:00 [1]

Y.

Track 18:00 [3] 1.0 mi (18:00 / mi)

BHS track about 5:20 - a few laps but too hot in sun for me. Spent 10' back & forthing at a bit more than 3 on the shaded back stretch, getting OOB & called it a day.

Road running 1:17:55 [3] 5.98 mi (13:02 / mi) +85m 12:29 / mi

Woods Hole walk-jog, tiring, at the end of the day. No going ashore at Cuttyhunk as it rained in the am & we needed to move on. So we ended up at Great Harbor & getting ashore for a Woods Hole visit & exercise became real. This marked the end of our summer cruise. WH is an old friend, going back to the early 80s for the most part. I walked-jogged the gps'd loop which was basically the course of the first Seagull Classic in May, 1978, the only RR I ever won. I was 32, in good shape having run Boston the month before as well as a 55' 10 mile that spring. In the last mile, from Nobska Light, there was one young woman, right behind, whom I knew, Lynn Jennings. She was from Harvard, MA and a neighbor of the Taburs. She was a 17 y/o high school standout. I must have figured I had to beat her & did by a bit, how much I can't recall. She went to Princeton but did not stand out there running. But she won a bronze medal in the '92 Barcelona Olympics in the 10,000m. I was pretty beat by Nobska this time.

After we had dinner at Captain Kid. I needed a sink 'bath' at the Steamship Authority first. We last had dinner at Captain K in September, 1991 after finishing our 7 year voyage. Paths cross again and again. Nice to be back at Quissett for the rest of the summer and early fall.

Walking 58:36 [1] 1.18 mi (49:40 / mi) +9m 48:31 / mi

To North Point Lighthouse - excellent beach walk.
4 PM

Walking 57:19 [0] 1.74 mi (32:57 / mi) +64m 29:34 / mi

Rodman Hollow NP, a veritable jungle. Tried the "short loop" but virtually no signs so eventually retraced our steps. Watched a fellow skid out on his moped entering parking. Travel on gravel roads was not allowed and the sensibility of this became apparent.

Road running 24:02 [2] 1.71 mi (14:01 / mi) +15m 13:39 / mi

A third walk-jog at the end of the day after returning the moped. Block Island had many views, stone walls and nice, unpretentious homes. Great Salt Pond was stuffed with boats. The first time we've seen the power boat culture at play. There's no such crowd in Maine. We were last at Block October, 1984.

Walking 38:40 [1] 1.71 mi (22:37 / mi) +13m 22:05 / mi

To Old Town on Block Island with Beth. Took a long rest in the cemetery & then, with renewed energy, made our way there & rented a moped for the return & some island sightseeing. A period of little routine being in boat motion w/o much pause.

Road running 1:03:20 [2] 4.41 mi (14:22 / mi) +24m 14:08 / mi

From Fort Adams SP waterfront off in search of Ocean Dr. which was just a short distance. Made it to Ocean Cliff resort as turnaround destination. Once upon a time, I'd run the long loop. Today I didn't make it to the ocean. Returning, I met up with Beth on the Bay walk around Ft. Adams & did a bit of it myself. Finished taking a shortcut thru military housing, a bit reminiscent of West Point.

Good old Newport...spent the winter of '68-9 here in Navy OCS and finished a trans-Atlantic sail here in 1992. RI is a postage stamp size state yet it has Newport and its collection of mansions, and Mafia in nearby Providence.

Road running 54:37 [3] 4.5 mi (12:08 / mi)

Patch-Rollins CCW. Started around 1115 on a hot-in-the-sun day but roads were quite shady and still damp from last night's rain. Walked a bunch on the Rollins uphills. Nice summer outing in rural Hopkinton.

Weightexercise workout 35:00 intensity: (30:00 @1) + (5:00 @3)

Went to the Y when T-storm was imminent. Had considered Hopkinton Patch-Rollins. Rained cats & dogs here, dry in Concord, then a shower, then sun again. Didn't have my cell phone so stayed at the Y where I could access a phone. No calls, gray and still rainy-looking here upon return.

Note

Zoe: October, 2001-August, 2015

Z departed yesterday in the early eve when the vet and her assistant came to euthanize her, two months short of 14. It’s a strange feeling knowing that an old friend and constant companion will be gone at the end of a chosen day. She had hind leg problems for several years, needing help to get into the back of the car. Beth took Z&M for a walk several days ago. They went straight where she went right at a familiar intersection in the woods. She expected them to reappear shortly. But it was nearly 10’ when M finally appeared. Beth’s retracing a short distance found Z barely able to walk. The vet diagnosed a ruptured anterior cruciate on top of the years of hindquarter disability. We gave her a Fentanyl patch, prednisone, hope and some time but she showed no improvement, being barely able to get off her bed to pee or poop. She knew, as did we, it was time to go.

Woods/trail 53:47 [2] 3.0 mi (17:56 / mi)

Swope Park, Concord - around most of the perimeter of Jerry Hill. Woods, beech mostly, still so green, nary a colored leaf. Usual great view of Penacook Reservoir. Fairly fresh fire (web check reveals April, 2014) at the north end which opened the woods, burning the low brush, leaving the canopy.

Paths

21 Long Pond Road for sale again. We still have a soft spot for this 1973 deck house adjacent to Swope Park. At about 3100' sq feet, it seemed huge when we visited about 6 years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if we go back to visit. As a species, when will we ever learn?

Weightexercise workout 35:00 [1]

At the Y before work. Will try for Tu-Fri when things regularize. Good choice of parking, little "competition" for machines & south Main quiet and not particularly early.

Woods/trail 57:39 [2] 4.17 mi (13:49 / mi)

Wander thru Audubon and SPS. Roots & rocks make for a SloGo but so does
the get up and go that got up and went. Still in search of it. Returned to Audubon, was walking by the building, heard a "strange sound" - noticed there were caged birds "right there". So looked into how to get in & was treated to two barred owls, one red-tailed hawk, one peregrine falcon and one bald eagle, all previously injured and unable to return to nature.

Can't get the 310XT upload to AP or transfer the gpx file fm Garmin Connect.
Don't get the screen that's shown on a YouTube illustration. If I could, it would be straightforward.

Walking 35:00 [1] 1.5 mi (23:20 / mi)

BHS track & fields, to Turee. Fields are so green and one had about 50 extremely symmetric mushrooms over about 3 ac grass.

No idea if edible. A good salad or other menu addition if so....

Entered BD and O in Pines meet.

Weightexercise workout 40:00 [1]

Resumed use of the Y. Can't "survive" on running/jogging/walking alone as I've always been accustomed to doing. Had planned to resume in November. I'll have to get used to going inside for additional exercise when it's still light outside.

Track 15:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (5:00 @3) 1.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

At BHS track on way back - light drizzle. Rained heavily today.

Road/trail 57:03 [2] 3.63 mi (15:43 / mi) +125m 14:12 / mi

Out the back into thick, thick wetlands for a start - over the 6-7 yrs I've known the area rather well, it has gotten so "impeded", at least for progress thru. To stop & ponder, it's interesting in its "nature with abandon". To PL, then along Woodhill-Hooksett, back on Allen. Not much of these sorts of forays recently.
Had the 305 on left wrist, 310 on right. Will try to upload data from the 310 - have had it nearly a week and a half & have not used it due to obtuse intro.

Climate change (?), pick-up-stix woods, taken with a cell phone as a learning experience for me (not a smart phone but was able to email it to myself at home). I had a beeper and cell (on call) as well as 2 gps's on board (reads nerd-like). A combination of wind and/or heavy wet snow lead to such "messiness", to our eye. Further south, say CT, there's much less of this.

Friday Aug 7, 2015 #

Track 47:00 intensity: (35:00 @1) + (5:00 @2) + (5:00 @3) + (2:00 @4) 2.5 mi (18:48 / mi)

At BHS around 4:45 - took '99 Scottish 6 days maps, thought there was a Glen Affric but no. Walked 6 laps, read the 6 maps, a map-a-lap. Remembered most of the legs. Would give my self a B/B- for all 6. Last day was a B+. Competition in Scotland & Europe can be so humbling.

Got revved up for some 100s & did a 21.33 and, finally a sub-20, 20.67 - as if this is fast (fantasizing 200s?). Legs are turning over pretty fast but shorter stride seems most of explanation.

Orienteering 1:35:09 [2] 2.02 mi (47:06 / mi) +120m 39:46 / mi

At Bear Brook, nice to visit the woods, even if still August with bugs etc. Had a Green course from 2013, goal was to get to each point with accuracy & did that fairly well. Watch twice lost satellites: saw "are you indoors?" & "no" and "have you moved hundreds of miles since last use"? Was patient the first time but when it happened again & I'd been out about 70', enough was enough.
Noticed flies only at end.

Note

however, has that huge, much admired tree on Main Street.

Hiking 1:38:56 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (28:56 @2) + (1:05:00 @3) 4.01 mi (24:40 / mi) +471m 18:05 / mi

At Sunapee. Went there with Beth to the crafts fair. Been a number of years for me. So much talent. After about 2.5 hours, I went for a hike with idea of getting to top but gave it 60' up and about 20' down. And it felt like I'd be late but got to top in 65' and was only about 15' late in getting to Info booth finally. How odd but pleasant to see it all decked out in green. I'm accustomed to winter white, to getting to the top of the lift & getting going because it's cold and windy. Took Williamson Road up for the most part and it just kept going up. Helps ski lift appreciation.

The boulder was a surprise, the cloud quite nice

Track 24:30 intensity: (16:30 @1) + (4:00 @2) + (4:00 @4) 1.53 mi (16:01 / mi)

BHS track around 6p. Fell into running 100s, walk 100 in between, one 200 (c. 43). Got so I wanted to see a 20 & maybe did but 305 is not the best for that. Probably could have gotten under 90. Felt energetic but not dipping very deep these days.

Mt. Major hike with Beth, up Belknap Crest and Brook trails, down Boulder Loop Tr. Left parking at 0945, lot was full. Fine day, grand blue-green vista from the top. Lots of hikers, no surprise on such a fine Sunday. Spoke with a 77 y/o lady just beginning to come down from the summit who queried about expected steepness. Parking had spilled well out onto Rte. 11 by time we returned, around 1pm.

Did this last April 5 in snow.

Road/trail 58:27 intensity: (28:27 @1) + (30:00 @2) 3.2 mi (18:16 / mi) +114m 16:27 / mi

Visit to Kimball Pond, a bit too late, nearing 9am. Had thought of going early yesterday when it was clear & pristine after the cold front but did not rally, walked M and went to work. It was actually clouding up on the drive over and there were some sprinkles - not expected. Did Loop and East Side trails.
