Road running 50:29 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (30:29 @2) 3.92 mi (12:53 / mi) +60m 12:18 / mi

To Merrymeeting Lake from Bassett high point. Hypoglycemic fade for the last 1.5 mi. Perfect NH summer day. The lake is appropriately named, and not too big or small, surrounded by hills -- or maybe small mountains. Brought Zoe home.

Track 30:00 [2] 1.75 mi (17:09 / mi)

BHS track - got there just as skies opened. So I waited, getting onto 20'.
Then rain shut off & it was quite pleasant with sky clearing over Turee. In search of energy these days.

FR 310 isn't being recognized for time being.

Note

Thimbles parade ground

Velcro demise (Stucktape). Found in the kitchen after being away.

Road/trail 38:55 intensity: (18:00 @1) + (20:55 @2) 2.44 mi (15:57 / mi) +74m 14:35 / mi

Bog Jog around 5:30. Temp got to 90F today, still warm in shady woods. Mostly, though, it was about FDFs. Saw a truck on a SVT that had to be up to no good.

Got a new Garmin 310XT today. Labelled the parts, namely the charging stuff.
Drawers of similar w/o knowing what they're for now.

Walking 45:00 [1] 2.5 mi (18:00 / mi)

Fishers Island walking in am. Needed a map or smart phone or I might have gotten lost - so was conservative on my route choice. Many roads to take on this essentially residential island.

Rowing 38:20 [1] 1.1 mi (34:51 / mi) +1m 34:45 / mi

Rowing, something at least. Watch was left on for some 11hr with boat swing pattern to show for it.

Walking 42:35 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (22:35 @2) 2.34 mi (18:12 / mi) +38m 17:19 / mi

Ashore in charming Essex, first time ashore in two days. Was a bit lazy around Lloyd's Neck and not really possible in the Thimbles - did not get the dinghy over the side. Connecticut River shoreline is lovely. Last here 1980!
Seems like that should be an "oops".

Walking 43:16 intensity: (28:16 @1) + (15:00 @2) 2.59 mi (16:40 / mi) +26m 16:10 / mi

From Scott & Kitty's place in Shorefront Park. So many houses so close together! Got to power plant gate.
4 PM

Road running 23:36 [2] 2.11 mi (11:11 / mi)

From Playland to AYC on Forest & Van Wagen - dropped rental car in Port Chester & got a ride to Playland from Enterprise. Walked around Wainright House to see it as well as harbor views. Did not realize it was available for use/visiting. I've known it since the 50s - and back then, I thought it was private but it was turned over to other than private home use in the early 50s.

Visited Marshlands Conservancy in the afternoon which is on a map made by Ed Hicks. Wished I'd had time for a run.

Road/trail 34:14 intensity: (14:14 @1) + (20:00 @2) 2.33 mi (14:41 / mi) +33m 14:04 / mi

BHS around 5:45, still hot at 84F. BHS groove for the time being as it is simple. Met the same woman I talked with last night on the track. This time at Turee.

Also last night I had a most interesting conversation with 3 men (in their 50s) shooting in Nottingcook at the so-called target range, an encounter nothing like I expected.

Track 32:09 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (17:09 @2) + (5:00 @3) 2.31 mi (13:55 / mi) +1m 13:54 / mi

BHS track, Sat eve, had to myself. Bordering on hot/muggy but a sunny/pleasant moment after last night's rain and today's gray gloom.
Ran up & down the infield 10 or 12 times - lost count. Last 6 were barefoot on the lush carpet that is the football field. Lots of June rain here in NH. My best accompaniment these days in the car is a bonafide folding chair. I seem to like to sit more and more. It's great for reading in Rollins Park on the occasional lunch hour.

Road/trail 51:24 [2] 3.31 mi (15:32 / mi) +95m 14:15 / mi

Started at Parson's kiosk. Went into Meadowsend but really no loop to complete. On way back, did a woods wander which led to lack of "map contact" - no map - and finally came upon red diamonds which I recognized as Stone Sled. Eventually came out by the pump house, back on the road.
Tried "return to start" function on the 305 when on the road and, with practice, it could be useful. When scale was around 120'/screen, things happened.

Kayaking 1:08:16 [1] 2.22 mi (30:45 / mi)

Kayaking on the Merrimack with Beth from River Road launch. Had driven to Turkey Pond on SPS campus to find the gate closed. This seemed next best and was pretty good. Notable for forested shores and steep banks.

Saw a few boats and a women’s 8 crew. This angle presented itself as the crew was listening to their coach when we passed. Solar, fossil, human.

Road/trail 52:05 [2] 3.46 mi (15:03 / mi) +62m 14:16 / mi

Audubon-SPS wander. Nice NW breeze, esp by Turkey Pond. Forgot running shoes so made do with work shoes, extra weight. Found a geocache in the woods about 75m from a trail. First entry was from 6/2012. Hard to get the pen to write but impressive that it's spent that # of winters etc & works. Lots of kids on the floats at the SPS boat house enjoying a swim on a quintessential summer day.

Beth & I gathered about 1/2 qt of blueberries this am - small, moderately dense - takes work! The most enjoyable part for me was the time of day & the birdsong.

Road running 22:38 [2] 2.0 mi (11:18 / mi) +38m 10:41 / mi

BHS-BMS loop - had twice in mind but just tired & it was too hot, esp at the BHS end w/o breeze. So canned it w/o any guilt.

Road/trail 29:24 [2] 2.21 mi (13:18 / mi) +66m 12:10 / mi

BHS campus tour (more a shuffle) around 6p - 10 deg cooler than last night. Enjoying the green grass & open spaces, less likelihood of insects. And a world apart from the white fields of winter.

Yesterday's hunter's stand. Brings up a parody...?... when men were made of steel and solutions of wood; now the same stands are steel and the men have heads full of wood.

Walking 57:17 [1] 1.32 mi (43:24 / mi) +53m 38:35 / mi

Stone Sled easement check with Ken. Started 0830 so still cool. Supposed to get to 90 today. Discovered an old hunter's stand, the platform possibly 30' up with blocks nailed to the tree trunk - cannot imagine climbing them but someone did.
6 PM

Track 35:55 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (15:55 @2) + (5:00 @3) 2.23 mi (16:06 / mi) +1m 16:05 / mi

BHS track at 6p - still hot. Low on energy and right sole sore. Better than nothing. Sought grass & shade after the first mile.

4 PM

Road/trail 40:32 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (20:32 @2) 2.61 mi (15:32 / mi) +75m 14:16 / mi

Nottingcook loop, muggy & buggy. More target shooting. Spotted a fawn this morning - was within 50' when M came onto the scene.

Track 38:15 [3] 3.0 mi (12:45 / mi)

BHS around 5p. Sun seemed hot but decent NW breeze for half the track. Fell into walk 100, run 200 which got a bit harder as it progressed. Reasonable workout, the "run" part was a 3.5 plus effort. I'll be damned if the accelerations don't mimic v tach.

Road/trail 31:38 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (16:38 @2) 1.71 mi (18:28 / mi) +56m 16:46 / mi

Nottingcook look-see and see about returning to some sort of groove.
Cool enough but buggy. Bog is still intact with plenty of water lilies for a finishing touch.
4 PM

Road/trail 37:42 [2] 2.5 mi (15:05 / mi) +64m 13:58 / mi

Kimball Pond at end of day. Very still, got a bit hot, buggy & muggy in the last stretch. A dip was the perfect ntidote. Very quiet, no one there til I was leaving. Overcast. Summer eve.

Note

Home sweet home, no place like it. From the SOL, up the East River with a favorable current, across Flushing Bay, by LaGuardia and Execution Rock, then New Rochelle, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, and finally Rye, a transient home. American Yacht Club and Stuyvesant Ave. are of another world and from the years I began to know it, 1955-'61. Milton Pt. is now very much over-gentrified. Keeping up with the Joneses involves multimillion dollar estates on the Sound or harbor with state of the art landscaping. It was so much simpler in 1960!

Did a one way rental from Rye to Concord, Stopped at the Apple store in Manchester to see about my laptop but have to go back shortly. Drove a hybrid for the first time. The lack of audible indication that the engine had started was most peculiar.

Walking 30:00 [1] 1.3 mi (23:05 / mi)

Token "training" on Milton Pt. Also at Playland on the boardwalk.

Blither...

Last offshore page for the two of us for numerous reasons. One, not far from top of the list, is fact that effective living space (on our boat) is around 120 sq feet, i.e., say 8' by 15' which has become tough to tolerate for any length of time with some mindsets, mine now included. We were 6d 20h going and 5d4 hr returning. In some respects, it is a form of suspended animation esp when the weather is a trial as it was to and through the Gulf Stream returning from Bermuda - a lot of wind and wave, confining and even anxiety-producing at times. My anxieties were things like major rigging failure, rudder or steering cable issues, hard-to-identify leak, falling overboard (should be entirely preventable), significant medical issue (namely something broken or dislocated), or fire. Any one of those could have been a "party spoiler" and the energy for dealing with any has certainly dissipated. Being enveloped by land in NY harbor was most welcoming. We celebrated it all by watching 4th of July fireworks anchored between the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The Manhattan shoreline was incredible (a pix or two on the way). My computer decided it was time for a major failure so current solutions dropped down to catch as catch can.

Road/trail 27:20 [2] 2.25 mi (12:09 / mi)

At Coney Island, NY. Tierra firm although there was some initial swaying.
Went from one side of Coney I. Creek to the other. Have never seen the amusement park tho it's always been well known. Could see it from 10 miles out to sea.
4 PM

Walking 38:30 [1] 1.81 mi (21:16 / mi)

At Liberty Park - hundreds enjoying breeze and shade in what is likely a world apart from their neighborhoods. The small part I saw of Coney Island was intense people, traffic, macadam, hardscrabble.
