Track 15:07 [2] 1.6 km (9:27 / km)

BHS around 6pm - muggy, overcast/light rain on & off, actually quite suitable for track

Track 7:37 [4] 2.0 km (3:49 / km)

8x200 with 100 in between: 53.47, 49.97, 47.96, 46.81, 44.85, 44.96, 43.37, 43.29

2x200 with 200 before each: 42.72, 42.17

Felt pretty good - had flats on which helped some with expectation if not time.
Could get to 40, maybe 85.

Walking 18:00 [1] 1.2 km (15:00 / km)

Hiking 1:44:20 [1] 2.3 mi (45:22 / mi) +175m 36:42 / mi

Monadnock with Peter. Seemed that it might be cloud-covered but cleared & was very fine. 305 lost fixes just past halfway up. Encountered just five going up (two overtook, three coming down) on Peter's choice of trails. There were numerous hikers on the summit. Coming down White Arrow was also crowded initially. Lots of talking, sometimes stopping to make a point (eg, photographing dragon flies & dealing with external hard drives). Nice outing. Stopped in Peterborough on the way back.

Had 60' in mind, starting at Audubon. Visited the audubon center at the end. Had never peeked in. Very nice. Favorite find was a corn snake. Was enthralled with them as an adolescent - had one 5' long. It was supposed to be 6' & I was sent a 3' temperamental black racer to make up the difference.

Note

Evening walk with Beth & dogs to Tadpole Pond and noted the below. At work, missed my optimal time of day for a run, came home, stuff to do & that was that.

Road/trail 22:22 [2] 1.61 mi (13:54 / mi) +40m 12:54 / mi

Rockland GC around 6p - green mansions for a pick up. But another enervating day. Interesting revelation for me: "denervate = remove or cut off the nerve supply from an organ or other body part as in 'the denervated muscle fibers'."

A source of confusion as I thought the word I wanted was "denervating" (but it's really "enervating").

But 'cut' nerves & you have something bordering on paralysis...which is where I feel I am some days.

Sort of a downtrodden three days. When we got to the boat, I had difficulty starting the engine. Low oil pressure on the gauge, the alarm bleated until I shut it down. There was water in the sump. I spent two days with a mechanic trying to figure out the source. When we left today, the cause was still unclear. First time in many a year with an engine problem requiring a mechanic. The "time out" did provide an opportunity to see parts of Rockland usually bypassed in the coming & going w/o spare time.

Rockland landing in early eve on what had been a hot day. Found a path into the woods & took it as long as I had time for. Had been there some years before with only foggy recollection.

Sat view shows a field as final destination.

Orienteering race 26:45 [2] 1.42 mi (18:50 / mi) +3m 18:43 / mi

Missed a few & took a very circuitous route to #14 - lost about 2' to George on that leg.

Orienteering race 9:55 intensity: (2:00 @1) + (4:00 @2) + (3:55 @3) 0.72 mi (13:46 / mi) +1m 13:43 / mi

OK except for missing #3 - a "stumble upon", Ed Despard & Lynette W were punching a point & inquiry led to the unlikely find. Making one's own luck is part of the equation.
8 PM

Orienteering 23:19 intensity: (13:19 @2) + (10:00 @3) 1.15 mi (20:16 / mi) +3m 20:07 / mi

Best of the lot. Easier after dark I think. Maybe less distracting imagery on the periphery? Also, the learning curve. Plan was to go CW, and pickup 32 on the backside w/ some attention to bonus points but not much. Well, left out 32 & proceeded there (to 32) from 39 - a considerably harder approach. Hit every one except #42 but relocated just to SW where long straightaway began - lost maybe 2'. Finished thinking I'd done just fine but Peter pointed out I'd missed 2, a surprise! Splits showed 34, a bit of an outlier & result of not looking the extra few seconds. And, embarrassingly, 33 - ran right by it. Was on my way to 46/39. I think, in back of my mind, there were some "extra" controls & did not look at map to see that, in any event, this was not one of them. Navigationally-wise, I'd give this a B+ but end result say a B.
Point-wise, don't know where I ended up.

Map

Better than last year. Still in too much of a hurry like Phil. Trail O (12 pts) was most clever as were some of the attempts to nail the locations. Nice time engineered by PG yet again - good weather & visiting. Home by 2250, 210 miles RT.

Road/trail 57:55 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (37:55 @2) 4.55 mi (12:44 / mi) +148m 11:34 / mi

Hopkinton Village Greenway, had just rained, gray, cool. Dark in woods. No energy to speak of. Met a fellow just starting out in opposite direction from another parking area & saw him on the far side of the loop - otherwise, no one in woods.

Related walking.

Note

Track 10:28 [2] 1.05 mi (10:01 / mi) +5m 9:52 / mi

BHS around 6pm. Mile warmup

Track 7:23 intensity: (5:00 @3) + (2:23 @4) 1.04 mi (7:06 / mi) +2m 7:03 / mi

7:22 would be ok if nonstop...but 4x440 with 200 walk! "Overcoming Inertia" is the pertinent theme. Approach the line, run 2:04 & ready to stop. Not sure why so flagging. 5 cute kids, esp the 2.5' blond, playing in the pole vault pit.

Road running 49:08 [2] 4.42 mi (11:07 / mi) +160m 10:00 / mi

Rollins-Patch loop, CCW. Nice day, cool in shade which it mostly was. Leaden legs, however.

Orienteering (corn maize) 35:10 [1] 1.19 mi (29:33 / mi) +10m 28:48 / mi

At Beech Hill Farm. O training in a loose sense. The maze is rather simple and a map is not provided. The maize I did was "It's Greek to Me" (appropriate w/o a map...) with a crossword puzzle consisting of names and places in Greek mythology. Did not find #15 across, found the others. Became apparent that it was a "stumble upon" or maze memory or both. Suppose the 305 track would show the whole maze had I found all. Not sure what not finding #15 omits. Maybe a disgruntled 8 y/o threw it in the woods. The farm (but not the maze) was crawling with young kids. The ice cream line was much too long for me. All in all, an ok experience. Corn was high & it provided a suitable framework for this coming Saturday.

Road/trail 31:08 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (21:08 @2) 2.44 mi (12:47 / mi) +32m 12:17 / mi

SPS wander before going to dinner at UNOs with Diane & Liz.

Note

An odd ball pair of rocks in Little Turkey Pond, seemingly in the middle of nowhere yet solid ground needs be near.

Road running 47:41 intensity: (17:00 @2) + (26:41 @3) + (4:00 @4) 4.95 mi (9:38 / mi) +89m 9:07 / mi

Home from Clough SP. Nice cool time of day, sun slanting, roads quiet.

Kayaking 58:18 [1] 2.08 mi (28:02 / mi)

Kayaking at Clough SP with Beth. Smaller than I'd like but a few cubbyholes & interesting perspectives. Breezy NW. Long time since last visit. We used to wander around a fair amount - not sure why so much less now. Hasn't much to do with energy. More of an archival log.

BHS track, 5:45p. Trophic visit. 305 spikes indicate 7x200m. There was a young lass, 16-7, running 200s etc around 30sec I'd guess. Asked her if that ws so but she was hard wired to her music. She also had a turk's head on her wrist. I recall having one from age 18ish well into my 20s. Would have liked to break her "sound barrier" for a chat but did not.

Had West Point maps for walking.

From SPS home. Went kayaking on Little Turkey Pond with Beth first. Had to pry her away from house chores but as we got to SPS greenery & the pond on such a lovely day, it was clear that this was the thing to do. When she found $40 in the back pocket of my running shorts (having asked her to put my cell phone there), she was even more smiles.

Road/trail 26:22 [2] 2.26 mi (11:40 / mi) +20m 11:21 / mi

At Mine Falls after visit to Nashua Apple store. In store was the revelation that hard drive quit (oh shit!). Anyway, Mine Falls is a most pleasant place to jog thru. Noticed more today than probably all other times combined in search of flags. As I was leaving, a running race with possibly 200 was close to starting. I'm up for upcoming RR's but was not this eve. It occurred to me that UNO has a good store of maps, this being one.

Road/trail 30:59 [2] 2.67 mi (11:36 / mi)

Same as yesterday, CCW this time. More humid, more DFs.

DP to the slough this morning found hundreds of frogs at low water edge, jumping away at our arrival. I could see remnants of the small bridge I made for some of the A meet courses fall, '07.

The day I sold the Saab convertible and the eve of the "super" moon.

Nottingcook, warm, lovely actually. No place like home. Not much zip, long way to go to reasonable level of fitness. Encountered an ATVer there illegally - went by me at 15mph est. No license plate or whatever is req'd.

Road running 22:12 [2] 2.0 mi (11:06 / mi) +38m 10:29 / mi

At NEH. Pleased I got ashore - rained hard starting around 4p & went on for quite some time. Got dark, too so weather was working against noble thought but it got lighter & needed the exercise. Two miles was goal - did have about 12# in a pack on my back. Running with weight regularly, say back & ankles, would probably be quite useful. Very pleasantly cool around 7p.

At end of NS there was fairly constant motion & departure a day early so very little "training" as it's written.

And then I rediscovered this other moonlit episode, suitably linked as fragile memory.

Walking 1:57:28 [1] 4.69 mi (25:03 / mi) +75m 23:52 / mi

At Port Mouton. More than bargained for. Walk ashore with Beth. Intent was to get to a/the store, thinking it would be near the public pier, about 1.5 mi away. We’d done that & more when we met 4 people I’d guessed were on the 2 other boats here. We chatted & learned that the convenience store was about a mile and a half from where we were standing.
Undeterred, I guess, we marched on, secretly thinking they might not be good at distances (as are many people we encounter). But they were. The road just kept on going & became somewhat of an unattractive highway but we had too much invested to bail out. Finally, the convenience store. I’d been hoping to buy some antifreeze - something overlooked at the start. Could do w/o but had held a hope. But no antifreeze. The return was better since there were no longer any unanswered questions except, maybe, would we be offered a ride. Some sustenance (incl. quart of milk and bottle of wine) & the road’s returning to quieter ways saw us back on our own power. Turns out the convenience store, while not convenient, was a bit of an unexpected experience.

Record shows we spent 2 nights here in 2003 & entry says we walked to store - had to be the same one & walk appeared to make very little impression.

Note

Sailed to Oban, Scotland in 1999 from Portsmouth, NH. Then continued thru the Caledonian Canal to Inverness in time for the Highland ’99/WOC events there. Was able to walk to the event center from nearby Caley marina.

Re the Scottish 2011 6 day comment above, here is a picture I took of that boat.
8 AM

Road/trail (plus some rowing) 1:09:50 [2] 3.16 mi (22:06 / mi) +65m 20:46 / mi

Rowed a mile RT to access Fleming Park with Beth. Jogged some off trail as well as on. Reminds me of many Boston area maps, maybe more boulders though. Took a dip in the salt water which is a reasonable temp as far up the Arm as it is.

Dover Run, near Canso. Looks Scandanavian.

Smiley face herself, with a good book.
