Weightexercise workout 30:00 [1]

Y at 5pm

Weightexercise workout 20:00 [3]

Cardio on elliptical and bike - running wouldn't have worked. Had O maps along for distraction.

Walking 30:00 [1] 0.9 mi (33:21 / mi)

Midday DP, went to slough, knew it would not be routine, had "spikes" on.

End of road

Road running 34:20 intensity: (1:00 @1) + (10:00 @2) + (23:20 @3) 3.39 mi (10:08 / mi) +98m 9:18 / mi

BHS/BMS at end of day. A gray, drizzly, uninspiring day. Had a hard time willing myself out of the car but all seemed well enough & got into it. Had 4 mi/2 loops in mind. Was crossing the elementary school parking lot thinking about the left calf, & that it was doing ok chasing 10’/mi, when it demanded I stop running. Had to walk back to car. Stopped at town pond for an ice pack. The annoying thing is that I really did nothing to provoke it in the first place this year at least. Looked up last year’s insult which was March 3 & stopped me on a run in Newton on the 5th. Mentioned it on the 15 & 18th & called in recovered April 10th - but more skiing, less running as it was earlier.

Road/trail 52:09 intensity: (7:09 @1) + (45:00 @2) 4.09 mi (12:45 / mi) +122m 11:40 / mi

SloGo starting at Derryfield CC in Manchester. GC off limits quite a bit due to snow. Gray, mid40s. Got over to Derryfield Park as well & a no-nonsense fenced-in reservoir. Nice to be in new/different setting. Still have a knot in left calf. Very pedestrian. Picked up desktop at Ben's after.

Trail/woods running 33:22 intensity: (8:00 @1) + (25:22 @2) 1.91 mi (17:28 / mi) +24m 16:49 / mi

A pittance considering. Raining after work so went home & then graciously accepted dog duty so we went to BHS & I got OOB at times negotiating snow. Lacrosse kids were beginning their season on a hardtop basketball court. Looked rather pitiful being so surrounded by snow. M got separated & had to search some. Better training tomorrow.

Trail/woods running 50:48 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (35:48 @2) 3.17 mi (16:01 / mi) +96m 14:39 / mi

Nottingcook loop w/ Z & M - more ice & crust than I bargained for. Woods full of snow. Mild temp. Thought the SM tracks might be soft but only in a few places. Didn't fall once, not sure how that was managed - came close, caution rewarded evidently. A truck with with waist-high wheels passed in the snowiest section with two young people. Otherwise nothing of note. Was in Manchester earlier - much more bare ground there.

Weightexercise workout 30:00 [1]

Treadmill 10:00 [3]

Mindful of L calf strain, mild as it is. Recalled a year ago, pulling it after a Ski O, bending over left rear door to pick up something inside the car at the limit of stretch. That was the inciting event, I think, even a year later.

Skate skiing 20:00 [2] 1.5 mi (13:20 / mi)

Crust sampling at Memorial Fld. Was a very windy day (snow storm on Cape Cod kind of day) but warmed to 32F by mid-pm. Wanted to see what the surface was like under these conditions. Went to Memorial Field where the infield of the track was untracked - bumpy but nothing made by anything other than wind. Worked ok, learned some more. Skating downwind was pretty darn good.

Road running 1:13:02 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (1:03:02 @2) 6.39 mi (11:26 / mi) +219m 10:20 / mi

Local loop, don't believe I ever named it. Haven't run it in a while. More early spring rawness, blue-gray sky, with wind at times. Had repeat knot L calf after 0.7 mi, stopped for a few minutes, wondering if I should try for the whole distance but deciding no seemed so nowhere. So the knot remained there but did not get worse, anyway. But definitely slow going. Had several O maps (Ansonia, '04 & Winona North '01), too, so numerous stops to see the detail.
Utilized them for nearly 50'. Heard RWBs on several occasions. Glad to be done when the time came.

Note

Took a short walk with dogs to east of house and discovered this small wooden bridge over the brook. It's been there since we moved in ('95) but never noticed by us. Usually don't wander there in winter and never in summer as the growth is on the thick side. The supportive crust has beckoned: easier to walk over than bare ground, white for light, nothing to trip on and being a foot or so taller is a bonus (can see more...). Dogs wouldn't cross (they just fretted) but crossing was really of no import.

10 AM

Skate skiing 20:13 [2] 1.9 mi (10:38 / mi) +5m 10:33 / mi

Crust sampling @ BHS, just after 10a, low 20s. Abrasive for the most part & biting NW wind. 20' was enough but nothing ventured, nothing gained category.
3 PM

Trail/woods running 42:03 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (12:03 @3) 2.05 mi (20:31 / mi) +35m 19:29 / mi

Had 30' in mind out back, DP as well as woods visit & see if any hamstring feedback. Turned out to be delightful - plenty of sunshine, & 30F eventually felt fine. Decent crust but went thru maybe 10 times - usually where some small plant has made an unseen hollow. Went to & along the long marsh to the trail system & back, at the end, along the brook which is, for the most part, unnoted loveliness.

March marsh

Bought $150 running shoes today. Advertised as among the best re cushioning. Hardtop running will tell.

Sunday Mar 23, 2014 #

Treadmill (elliptical) 30:00 [3]

3 sets of 10' ea on elliptical. Opted out of road running. Need better shoes, had a right ham noise after yesterday.

Weightexercise workout 15:00 [1]

Weights @ Y. Understandably quiet on a Sunday at 5-6p. Watched some March Madness for distraction...Wichita State, 35-0, losing to KY as the 3 pointer missed at the buzzer.
11 AM

Skate skiing 35:36 [3] 4.06 mi (8:46 / mi) +1m 8:46 / mi

TRT skate - midday, a bit late. Groomed was pretty good so stayed with that.
Old corn stalks beginning to show. One lapse in timing, omitting west trails.

Saturday Mar 22, 2014 #

Skate skiing 25:08 [3] 3.1 mi (8:06 / mi)

After NHH, at SPS, crust sampling which was very good. Covered front fields a few times. Skating over mostly untracked fields is a high. Forgot 305.

Road running 52:56 [2] 5.1 mi (10:23 / mi)

From SPS parking, Luti route - much the same as yesterday but CW. Knot in left calf made me wonder. Handy ice compress at the end for placebo, at very least.

Road running 56:37 [2] 5.32 mi (10:39 / mi) +69m 10:14 / mi

Fro NHH parking after work - like old days. Raw spring day. The run was like baby steps, and first one is biggest. Maybe 100m ice & snow. Reading about the David McGillivray's Boston marathon inspired, esp last few sentences.

Thursday Mar 20, 2014 #

Walking 30:00 [1] 0.7 mi (42:50 / mi)

With dogs - all the supportive snow disappeared. Back as far as the Sandbox, all very slushy. Got very warm today inspite of wintry-appearing start on first day of spring.

Powerline spring

Cold has finally disappeared. One of the memorable ones. Still recall one from Feb., '82.

@ Waterville with George. Skied Livermore Rd. Made it to top on skate skis which was a first. Classic called for klister. Hi 30s, gray. Waterville valley, beyond the condos, is really quite nice, being White Mt. NF. A bunch of time just standing/talking. 68mi ea way.

Note

A Rubicon crossed. Bought an external hard drive some 5 years ago to save/keep safe data. Formatting/PC/Mac interface complications, prevented its being utilized - long-delayed opportunities passed - til now. Not sure what’s changed (had a techie friend format the HD for a Mac laptop 6 mo ago - maybe contagion at work). When I connected the USB to the desktop & requested iPhoto export all photos (3903!), it went to work.

Nothing worse than losing photos (many of which are meaningful) because ‘technofusion’ left someone like me putting it off until something went seriously kaput, ie, too late. Now 3.9k photos are one step safer from oblivion. Harmless hoarding. I have a hard drive from a several-years dead laptop with perhaps a thousand photos awaiting reincarnation.

Beth & I recall a German tourist c. 1986 in Cuzco, Peru who disdained photography (in such a place!). He maintained he pictured everything in his mind. I don't buy that - he must have had one heck of a mind. Might he remember something like this young girl? A pics worth blah-blah words. It rings true with me & perhaps with those who wished they'd captured the moment they missed.

gym 30:00 [1]

Road running 25:00 [2] 2.0 mi (12:30 / mi)

SloGo around White Park. Less snow than at home - looks like early spring vs Bow which looks more like winter.

Skate skiing 25:00 [2] 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

At SPS around 4p, temp 40. Was curious as to what I'd find. Crust in shade, soft on packed in sun. Back soccer field offered good conditions considering.

Walked all over the back this am with dogs. M must have seen a moose with her barking & hair raised on back. They remain elusive in spite of plenty of evidence.

Skate skiing 51:03 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (41:03 @3) 5.58 mi (9:09 / mi)

TRT at 2:50p, groomed with soft surface in sun, crusty in shade. Not good enough for open-field crust skiing. Can walk on the crust surface in woods all around the house. It's interesting & nice to be a foot taller.

Tired day - Beth up at 0315 for 6a flt to FL & did not get back to real sleep. Finally, though, had her drive herself, leave car in long term pkng for the 4 days away.

Note

Bad day --- fingers on both hands were numb by first point. Had decent gloves with 2 chemical hand warmers in each (put in about an hour before) but fingers were still too cold with way too far to go. Was annoyed/frustrated/distracted/not having a good time so I bagged it - couldn’t use poles effectively etc. Didn’t help that e-punch had come off gloved forefinger a few minutes before start (tho I’d considered that in past 30’) & had to remove gloves to fiddle to get it back in place. Wind chill etc on a morning such as it was is a good test of preparedness & I was an amateur. Practice makes perfect & ski racers see a lot of the kind of windy cold there was this am. It was fine in woods but there was no way the fingers were going to warm up. Recall a super cold UNO ski O at Bretton woods years ago w/ cold fingers (old cold damage/sensitivity) but stuck that one out. A “must go” am such as this was is not what I see much of - usually skiing is a choice as to where & when unless a race-type effort. Had good down mitts but no plan for the punch with them. Will make some accommodation. It’s possible to be comfortable, even in windchill cold.
4 PM

Classic skiing 29:16 [2] 1.1 mi (26:37 / mi) +22m 25:03 / mi

Visit to SM trails around 3p for dogs who were shortchanged past 2 days. Conditions were great Fri pm but now ice, crust, a few places of bare ground under trees. Nice enough 20F though.

West Point not a month away & I've done less running in the past 2-3 months than in years past. Not possible to play catchup but time to head in that direction.

Skate skiing 1:06:03 intensity: (56:03 @3) + (10:00 @4) 4.19 mi (15:46 / mi) +184m 13:52 / mi

At Trapp Family - drove up with Beth & dogs, left 0600. Around 40F & windy at 9a arrival. Got some temp appropriate yellow fluoro wax from Jim A. Saw Coach at one point where I elected to remove my skis - took maybe a minute to get them back on. Not a good idea to take off - groove in boots fills with packed snow, map holder doesn't allow easy access to "ground floor" & maybe balance issue chipping in too.

Saw Larry B for a few points, could not keep pace with him either. Then Sharon came by - at one point, the 3 of us were standing at a control - an easy 105 yrs of 'hanging out' with O. Really quite tired by finish, napped in car for about 50' then drove off to Burlington. Mediocre technique & no surprise. Needs work & more work, might have stayed for clinic but low on energy - spitting rain fm a gray sky not motivating either.

Friday Mar 14, 2014 #

Skate skiing 30:00 [3] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

TRT - groomed for a surprise & surface was good. T mid 30s.

Skate skiing 1:00:00 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (35:00 @2) + (20:00 @3) 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

SPS, windy, 20F. Snow blowing across fields everywhere. From NHH at 2:30, really thought a nap was in order but went to find some lee at SPS & had a good time. Groomed hard pack (lots of rain last night) with most 2" dry snow on top. Also, some in woods off trail & a short spin on snow-covered artificial turf (turned up looking for spring most likely). No one in sight - everything untracked.

Weights & cardio - gray & raining, snow forecast...

Tuesday Mar 11, 2014 #

Skate skiing 40:00 [2] 3.0 mi (13:20 / mi)

At Turkey River at 11a, 52F when I left - too much warmth for skating.

Classic skiing 1:10:08 [2] 3.52 mi (19:55 / mi) +51m 19:04 / mi

Classic from end of Hope La. Hadn't thot of skiing home, picking car up later but better than out & back. Warm/pleasant. Fair amount of snow mobile trails but also straight thru woods for quite a bit, too. Saw the good, the bad & the ugly. Bad & ugly is Peasley development "progress" - houses growing like weeds, large ones at that. And once a quiet wood, exchanged for 3 car garages & much more. Creeps shot up the BOS sign we put up in December. Didn't like what it said.... Also, some straight-thru-the-woods snowmobiling. Push all of them over the cliff. Otherwise, we had a very nice ski.

Skate skiing 30:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (15:00 @3) 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

SPS crust. Sampled too soft at first but found better near the groomer shed & eventually returned to track area - pretty good at noon hour, tho it was 11a old time. Light to 7 now. Cold is on the run - still in sight tho - but night cough is largely gone. Each of the past several mornings, it's been clear blue sky, not New England-like.

Saturday Mar 8, 2014 #

Skate skiing 25:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) 2.0 mi (12:30 / mi)

Briefly at Memorial Field after rounds. Did not have a beeper, so skedaddled home. Warm, mediocre track.

Skate skiing 25:00 [3] 2.0 mi (12:30 / mi)

Some hill work on undeveloped part of Parsons La - soft snow mobile tracks. Had walked dogs there earlier & decided to give it a try. Snow, while soft, was quite slippery.

DST tonight - winter is fleeing. Green is on my mind.

Note

Tony Mangan is nearing the end of a tough transit of India. Iran is next after deciding against Pakistan & Afganistan for safety reasons. Read what he says about one particular Indian state, Bihar ("hell on earth"): March 4 blog entry, one to remember...

Skate skiing 40:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (15:00 @3) 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

About 1pm - bright again. Was 0F this am, around 32 at visit.

Classic skiing 25:00 [2] 0.8 mi (31:16 / mi)

Out back with Z&M about 5:30. First east, then across marsh to bottom of & along contours, then to brook. Wanted to cross, had one ski on each side but decided I had to return to the same side - didn't think I'd make it. Have in past in same or nearby place.

Beth & I did a SS earlier to top of contours. Need to get a camera out to see if I can catch a moose.

Thursday Mar 6, 2014 #

Skate skiing 40:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (15:00 @3) 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Usual visit to TRT. Day begain around 5F. Was about 32F at 2:45 when I went to TRT which was groomed. All in all, very nice. Bright white, blue, yellow, mellow.

Wednesday Mar 5, 2014 #

Skate skiing 35:00 [2] 3.0 mi (11:40 / mi)

TRT, new light snow on top of ungroomed track. Somber day and no energy to match. Some 7 nights of cold/cough - am going to mark it chronologically.

Tuesday Mar 4, 2014 #

Skate skiing 20:50 [3] 2.68 mi (7:46 / mi) +2m 7:45 / mi

Turkey River around 2p - sunny, hi 20s, soft groomed surface. Good time skiing. Forgot to start watch first lap so doubled it. Seems I've forgotten about running. And the cold wears on, cough, cough, at night mostly.

Met Udo Rauter in parking lot! Have not seen him for several years. Promised a ski at Waterville as well as some ping pong.

Skate skiing 5:23 [3] 0.69 mi (7:50 / mi)

Middle section.

Skate skiing 21:21 [3] 2.39 mi (8:55 / mi)

Got to Memorial Field end which was not groomed. Skated some on scalloped crust.

Skate skiing 11:06 [3] 1.33 mi (8:19 / mi) +1m 8:18 / mi

Final loop.

Monday Mar 3, 2014 #

Skate skiing 30:00 [2] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

End of day, only person there! Groomed as usual, some skate tracks, bit crusty late (20F) and quite slippery. Blue dome, calm.

Got car out of "hock" (ice grip) today with Corey's help. That felt like the solid progress it was.

2 PM

Classic skiing 1:29:03 [2] 4.1 mi (21:43 / mi) +74m 20:34 / mi

Waxless XC in Nottingcook, mild Sunday pm with occasional shafts of sun. It's work getting thru medium green which is what alot of it is. Passed thru a much moose trampled area like 12/23. Haven't seen one in the forest, however, for several years. Was able to ski most of marsh, then brief SM & back in woods to Bog Meadow. Then across to more snowmobile-packed trails. Took a look at the "Public Notice" sign which is not vandalized. SM trails were quite good.

Saturday Mar 1, 2014 #

Skate skiing 35:00 [2] 3.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Turkey River trails at 5pm - about 32F & nice slippery surface. New skis & boots, proper poles, fun.

Still more big time napping...twice, maybe 45' each.

March came in like a big freeze - was about 7F in the drive early but day ended mellow.
