Trail/woods running 40:00 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (20:00 @2) 3.0 mi (13:20 / mi)

Went to SPS around 2:40 - gray day & light rain began about 2:55. Jogged & walked, thinking now that I can enter the A meet, I need to pick up the pace over the next few weeks. Have a few days off & not going anywhere so that should help.

Sad to see October go - sodden & unceremoniously, tho tonight is Halloween. Entered the DVOA meet first thing when I got home. Felt a bit guilty passing up green but so be it.

Wednesday Oct 30, 2013 #

Walking 40:00 [1] 2.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Out back to PL & along it. Chilly but ok in sun. No energy to speak of.

Funny day - felt like a Monday...chaotic at work at first. Then Beth & I went to an 11a meeting in town a day early.... 41F inside the house when we got home around 1145p last night. (had neglected to turn the heat pump on in early dawn departure haste a week before). Better was when we realized the wind had blown open a bedroom window-door providing a 30" by 6' "hole" to let cold air in (had gone unnoticed due to dark, screen, large plant, curtain & a freezing BR to begin with). Wasn't ready for sleep so when it was time to get up here, it wasn't enough rest.

Asked George W at the UNO A meet what else was on his sked for the fall. He put DVOA on the radar - where it hadn't been. Looked at the web site yesterday: $40/day late fee, which for 2 of us would be around $160 minus USOF $16; that's just the late fee - which is unpalatable. So, shucks, guess no A meet. Wanted to see French Creek again - recall the '82 USOC there. Have call that week (which would have req'd fixing) & something ok to do Sat but did want an O experience outside my own backyard this fall. The Harriman meet would have been excellent in terrain & distance. The good (Boulderdash), the bad (late registration) & the ugly (A meet cancellation). What's next...local meets it seems.

Road running 1:07:14 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (52:14 @2) 5.39 mi (12:28 / mi) +357m 10:21 / mi

To Mt. Vision - it was clear but with usual mist on high. Very clear-windy last night, preserving views of Tomales. More & more mist as I got near the top of Mt. Vision, making it visionless, unfortunately. No people or cars other than Beth who passed me & was waiting in the parking lot. The road continued but was closed. Could not tell where the summit was but sat view reveals it was further ahead than I thought.

Walking 56:47 [1] 1.75 mi (32:27 / mi) +66m 29:03 / mi

The 5 of us walked from the heights of Via de la Vista to the bay beaches - drove back. We had an inquisitive observer on the beach. And Tanis' photoshop accomplishment.

Walking 40:00 [1] 1.75 mi (22:52 / mi)

Beth & I walked down & back up Via de la Vista in the morning.

Went out in the pm for a visit & supposed run on the drive to the lighthouse and south shore but it was windy & raw & not inviting. Got back & got bogged down.

Trail/woods running 24:45 intensity: (20:00 @2) + (4:45 @3) 1.72 mi (14:23 / mi) +110m 12:00 / mi

Not interested in anything am-time so by time a second opportunity came around, fog had come in. We drove out to Tomales Pt. as the fog was rolling off the ocean across the moors. Returning, got out of the car a few miles from top of Via de la Vista & made my way back along the paths used two days ago.

Was up for sunrise & birdsong

And out for fog and elk later

Road running 57:17 intensity: (40:00 @2) + (17:17 @3) 5.79 mi (9:54 / mi) +91m 9:26 / mi

Away at dawn, unusual for me. Made it to Kehoe Beach, Beth picked me up. Chilly, esp in the hollows. We walked most of the way to the ocean but had to get back. Morning mist was gorgeous. Went to SF at 0900, Golden Gate Park, California Academy of Sciences museum & then to Dave & Sharon's in Los Altos. Back at Via de la Vista at 10p. We drove on US 1 both ways - coming back in the dark proved how stupid we were as it was not our intention...we believed the GPS had a 'midway' compromise and didn't turn around when we could have.

Walking 25:38 [1] 1.02 mi (25:11 / mi) +4m 24:53 / mi

Ocean path to a very placid Pacific but ran out of time.

Trail/woods running 42:35 [2] 4.0 mi (10:39 / mi) +12m 10:33 / mi

Slo-Go in Napa Valley. Morning fog in Pt. Reyes area was not particularly alluring. Clear blue in Napa was better but St. Helena area route was not particularly interesting. The vineyards, leaves yellow with fall, were lovely.

We dropped Lyn's ashes into Tamales Bay this morning. A sad departure, away with the outgoing tide...the bay & not the ocean as Annie could not walk any distance.

Trail/woods running 1:23:39 [2] 6.92 mi (12:05 / mi) +339m 10:29 / mi

From Beau & Annie's place, down Stockstill, along Pierce Pt. & Heart's Desire Beach Rds. into Tamales SP. Fog dripping from the trees, otherwise pretty silent except for an occasional bird song.

Was reminded last time I was here was '05 - I knew it was awhile but recollection can be as foggy as was the day. Going from one side of the country to the other in a day (or less) still amazes me.

Trail/woods running 40:14 [2] 2.5 mi (16:06 / mi) +43m 15:17 / mi

KRTF on way home from work. Drove right by the main entrance so started at secondary gate well along the road. Mostly rides & then a path & finally path system. Accidentally turned 305 off when trying find way home mode. Was in a hurry: pack, dinner out, pack the last & flight tomorrow to CA at 0600.

KRTF seems it would make a good O map: lidar base necessary, geo-referenced aerials & GPS'd feature location - sounds like a piece of cake. I want to do some more field-checking soon. Talking with George W about ghettocad/iPad use sparked the desire.

Orienteering (vetting etc) 1:20:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @1) + (20:00 @3) 3.0 mi (26:40 / mi)

Bear Brook USOC, second day. It was considerably warmer - 46F at Hayes this am. It rained last night but it was another gem of a morning. I stopped by to be accounted for, then went off to the backwoods of BB. How special to be there in that October finery as the day was waking up. Went to most of the points just fine - of course, had been there in vetting but going in the opposite direction for the most part. Did have some map contact issues on a few & was even anxious about returning with my report before first start. Did some more muddling & was back just before 9a.

PM picked up flags along the top of the SW part - certainly an abundance of challenge in this area - calls for several techniques & experience, too, to make it happen to one's satisfaction (and ever-present luck should it come one's way).

The last of the weekend was with Pete B, Alar, Jim, Ernst, JJ and Tony Federer standing/talking in the increasing chill, enjoying the last fine moments of a great weekend. It ended when JJ broke the 'ice' (some of us were cold) with his saying that he was done standing for the day. With that, we disappeared into our other lives.

Note

At large meets, there's the many interactions that go on - or don't - due to too much to do. It calls for a certain capability to have interacted with "everyone" to one's satisfaction. I guess that's not me, hasn't been. Thoreau took to the woods for his reasons. I've taken to woods & "singular"/solitary sports (XC, track, swimming, O) vs team (football, basketball, baseball) in part because I've shied away from too much personal interaction - for whatever reason. But nothing personal.

We (Bob & Beth) had a really nice time with Hans & Lena. Marcello came for dinner and spent Saturday night here, aboard RHODORA (one other orienteer did that at BG '09). Marcello was indeed amazed with all the places this old boat, sitting well out of sight of sea (a small stream gurgling astern), had been. Saturday night dinner was live indeed. And it was fun to introduce Marcello to various orienteers today as the maker of the Sunday map.

Orienteering 2:00:00 [3] 3.0 mi (40:00 / mi)

Vetting & picking up flags. Was 33F when we gathered in Hayes field. Full moon still present, rosy-fingered dawn enroute. Marvelled at the woods in October finery. Cold fingers bring a warm day which it was - yellow jackets had a field day in Hayes field. Things went well - all the points in the right places - the system is pretty fool proof. Major issue is appropriateness of points and possible misplacement - but if doubt exists, it's most likely a poor choice for a flag.

Have the Bengtssons and Oscar for dinner & two day visit. Quality eve talking old & new.

Trail/woods running 30:00 [1] 1.8 mi (16:40 / mi)

Went to SPS, parked under 89. No motivation but what a fine day - so walked to the playing fields, did some exercise & walked back. Watched kids playing soccer while exercising - one kicked the ball over light green & down an embankment - with a large static, leaf-covered stream at bottom. Kids gave up looking fairly fast - not their ball perhaps at work. Had an opportunity to be useful & found the ball looking more to left. Harder to find than one might have expected (basically white on brown leaves).

Road running 1:10:39 intensity: (40:00 @2) + (30:39 @3) 7.28 mi (9:42 / mi) +191m 8:58 / mi

Hopkinton loop CCW. Overcast, cool, rather ideal even if no sun. Muted colors. Looked down after some time (0.65mi by car on way home) and noted 305 wasn't recording. Tried the "adventure route" I'd looked at on sat view months ago but when I came to a 3-way junction, I opted for the sure way out. Right-hand went in what I felt was the wrong direction; straight ahead was narrow, climbed & mostly waist-high grass - but that was the one I needed now that I can see again. Noted the two exits-entrances on Hatfield Rd. Adventure awaits inside this loop. Next time for sure. Escape the "mandatory" do what you set out to do - flexibility is good, even essential.

Rollins-Patch CW. Perfect fall day, decent energy but feel estranged from running with the recent irregularity - the practice-makes-perfect theme, lack thereof.

Today saw 2 deer, three turkeys & released one mouse (evicted from the house) before departing for work.

Trail/woods running 40:00 [2] 3.0 mi (13:20 / mi)

Bog Meadow with dogs - primary reason was to get BOS October bog photo to compare with spring - sun never did show today tho wx forcast was for sun.

Target shooters blasting away...now against the law but nothing posted - so ignorance seems bliss for now.

Map stuffing at Bundschuhs' place. I foresee a challenging weekend!

Too tired for a run - got the boat cover in motion, c'est la vie. A few more hours of "other" to go.

USOC meeting tomorrow - deadlines loom.

SPS wander after work - mild, lovely smell of fall leaves. Lots of XC kids, some swimming at the SPS dam - could hear the screams 250m away. Feel off kilter with running/training: vetting, boat delivery & driveway work, CCA article and BOS newsletter all converged at this time. Progress in time I suppose. Have the MacBook Pro back in its second reincarnation - working, on borrowed time but bought a new one, too - so now have too much....
Have to get in the habit of backing up must-not-lose stuff.

Trail/woods running 30:00 [2] 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)

two DPs - thick AM mist-mystery. PM to Bog for BOS fall picture & Stone Sled after for boundary marker photos. Virtually no running - vetting & boat delivery. Came home from work today & there the boat was -such a transition from afloat to 60 miles inland in the drive in less than 24h.

Orienteering (Putting out controls) 2:56:21 [1] 2.94 mi (59:59 / mi) +137m 52:24 / mi

USOC-Boulder Dash prep - met at Hayes field - maybe 12 of us there. Great morning - rained last night & expected more today but it was about as fine as a day as can be. NW windy by 2pm. Put out 15 flags with dogs along. Just 2 years ago, a déjà vu. 90% of controls for both days have been hung. Think we are in good shape, better be!

"Good Friday": UNO crew, all well.
3 PM

Trail/woods running 34:21 [2] 2.86 mi (12:01 / mi) +36m 11:34 / mi

From York harbor - boat days, no time for training. Went to town in search of a bottle of wine. Took a look at York Hospital & found a nice nature preserve.

Orienteering (vetting) 1:05:47 [1] 2.21 mi (29:46 / mi) +87m 26:31 / mi

BB, likely last of vetting for me. Some W/Y and a few advanced. Gone 4 days & meet 2 weeks away.

Interesting yesterday with Ernst's map print - did not show 2 sizes of boulders tho the map file contained these 2 sizes. Would not want that to be the reality as known bigger boulders can be most helpful.

Orienteering 1:37:09 [1] 1.9 mi (51:08 / mi) +37m 48:13 / mi

BB vetting - met Ernst at Hayes field at 3p. We decided to vet a new area together which worked well. Much easier to be decisive by sharing ideas/opinions/options. Back tomorrow for some W & Y and a few other points, then I guess that's it for vetting.

Orienteering (vetting) 2:54:40 [1] 4.4 mi (39:42 / mi) +53m 38:16 / mi

BB vetting - another mild day. Mostly in the forest from 2 years ago, generally open, fun to be in. 8 MTB cars at parking yet no one seen again today.

Passed by the cemetery-in-the-woods and paused as I often do around cemeteries...old stones, slanted with age, October silence, leaves slowly falling. In a hurry but I took time to read one : Betsy Leavitt, wife of Samuel Leavitt, d. 1825, age 31. That made me pause considerably longer. Betsy was lying just as quietly back in 1977 BB days when I more than likely ran by her cemetery in a great hurry. '77 seems so long ago. Called Beth from the middle of nowhere (re the time I might be home) and pondered the difficult days of the Leavitts.

Why are we compelled to hurry?
