Hiking 2:59:38 [1] 5.78 mi (31:04 / mi) +459m 24:55 / mi

Hike to Akokala Lake from Beaumont Lake campground. Hike was listed as 6 mi each way. 305 started at the car - more like 5.7 from trail head. Didn't know what to expect after last week's White Mt. slugfest. But, as Phil said (& I'd forgotten) western trails are apt to be rock & root-free and generous with switchbacks when needed. Many lovely views, got there at 6pm. There were 3 sites - we had it to ourselves on the Friday night before Labor Day weekend. Bought & carried bear pepper spray ("Counter Assault") but saw little wildlife. Food prep was 100m away. Now eventide and the Blue moon should show soon. Background music of Akokala stream. $5 for a permit & free park entrance with USPS senior card...affordable excellence!

Road/trail 22:15 [2] 2.08 mi (10:42 / mi) +91m 9:25 / mi
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

Jog along Lakeside Dr. in Lakeside, MT on the shore of Flathead Lake. Spent some 6 hrs on 2 flts & 4 hours in car so it was warranted. Full moon rose over the mountain range across the lake. Lovely drive thru narrow and wide valleys, much of it along a river, Clark Fork (of the ...). Long day from 0430 to now 0010 NH time.

Road/trail 31:00 [2] 3.0 mi (10:20 / mi)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

SPS along bike path to Boathouse & return. Not a lot of energy. Certainly was a sparkling water afternoon.

Packed the old Kelty full up.... Dogs off to Peter's, coming home not the same!

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.7 mi (28:34 / mi)

DP as sun was coming. Began dark & rainy. Walked to point where tadpoles had once been teeming - now dried up. Replaced by songs of crickets & chorus of locusts. Did come across this guy walking along the sandy SVT, going my way.

This one didn't make it.
6 PM

Road/trail 39:29 [2] 2.93 mi (13:29 / mi) +50m 12:48 / mi
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

Jog with Marcello before dinner. Drove to S. Bow Rd and ran back. M had a Nottingcook map in hand & always knew where we were even when paths were indistinct. Dogs went to heaven and died...by the breathing of them anyway.

Talked of many things at dinner incl. his 4 WOCs at Switz, Hungary, Australia & France; PG and Sharon both of whom were readily familiar names; mapping at Whitehorse in the Yukon with Ross Burnett as host.

International mappers do so because they are interested (& are interesting people in the first place). The two we've met are very genuine which makes sense...if the forest is your bailiwick, you're down to earth:).

Road/trail 33:38 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (28:38 @2) 2.61 mi (12:53 / mi) +67m 11:56 / mi

Jog back from sign staining w/ Beth & dogs. On the enervating side. Took the small trail near where we were working, missed some blazes, made a wrong turn & found myself enroute to the car which B was approaching when I got there. So we went back to last night's sign on the way out, restaining part of it. Gave her dogs who had enough. Toe does not hurt running but stubbing it would likely be a pain in the butt. 2+ miles unmasked tired legs.

Spent most of the day inside GSD - refreshed my mind re Svea stove use, got one going. Bought a new Canon digital.

Came across this photo today taken last spring, sitting on the desktop all the while.
"Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they? Think not of them, thou hast thy music too...". Another fall is near.

Note

Nothing to be gained by CV exercise today. Defunct R big toe nail from a slip, somehow hitting front end of shoe on a rock. Hurt more than I thought it should have and when shoe eventually came off, the entire nail was undermined by a hematoma.

Spent 45' at EMS today. Bought some decent light weight hiking shoes
as well as some camping paraphernalia. Will be using a '74 Gerry backpack
for the upcoming hiking/camping. Should help in our 'labelling', maybe the Svea stoves too. Canon digital LCD stopped working at an inopportune time. Not sure of the solution.

Hiking 5:15:29 [3] 10.1 mi (31:14 / mi) +1145m 23:06 / mi

White Mountain hike with Phil Bricker. Route was Gale River Tr. to Garfield Ridge to Galehead Hut & then up to summit of S. Twin, then N. Twin & down & down & down. Tiring! Could not keep up with Phil on the climbs - two steep portions, to the ridge & to South Twin. In a few places, just a steep, boulder-strewn trail hemmed in by vegetation. A brief rest at the Hut & then another 0.8mi trek/upward slog to S. Twin with great views. Phil's Garmin 310's battery went kaput just before end (as well as lost sats for some time). I forgot to restart my 305 twice so neither of us had time/distance accurately (like we might have expected:). Had one hard stream crossing at the time of a downpour. The steep part of the trail down was obnoxious with all the rock (much of it loose) and exposed roots. It finished genteely however & the shiny metal of a parked car at a distance was a welcome sight. Beth had come with us, made a hike of her own & was waiting. Away we went & were home in about 75'. An honest day's work! Phil & I both reassessed the idea of a 24 hr rogaine, concluding 8 hours was likely the new reality.

View from Galehead

Mountains' majesty (from South Twin)

No cell signal? (for Beth rendezvous)...but someone's happy...

Road/trail 30:00 [2] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

Jog around Bog Meadow with Marcello who came for dinner (as did PB).
Still on the warm side but couldn't deny Z&M who got 3 needy dips. Marcello had a Nottingcook map in hand.

Not 10' into pre-dinner conversation, it became apparent that Phil had orienteered on maps made by Marcello at a recent Italian 5 day, associated with a JWOC within 25k from where Marcello lives.
8 AM

Road/trail 1:13:23 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (50:00 @2) + (8:23 @3) 5.9 mi (12:26 / mi) +187m 11:19 / mi
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

A mission occurred for the morning's run: jogged up to Dawson's place to pick up a CD & then home thru Nottingcook. Checked trail signs for staining - found 7 where I thought there might be just two or three. Woods look good on S side of WH - steeper, less logging abuse in past. A nice wander back.

Came home to a wee mouse Beth found in drive like Tiki of a year ago... maybe something to do with mice living somewhere in the convertible & when it gets its occasional use, out might fall a mouse. We'll see if Tiki 2 will grow up to run away - pretty frail at moment.

Road/trail 26:00 intensity: (8:00 @1) + (18:00 @2) 1.9 mi (13:41 / mi)

Bower loop, walk-jog. Cool morning.

Went to Pembroke with Beth to meet Marcello last night. A mapper-orienteer etc, he lives in northern Italy in a cabin-chalet type of homestead set in a grassy meadow with the Dolomites for a backdrop. Saw his place on Google Earth as well as in some photos. He went to was it 4 WOCs or as many ski Os starting early '80s. Certainly has a grip on mapping and his English is pretty good which is an immense help.

Road/trail 40:00 [1] 1.8 mi (22:13 / mi)

DP/BOS project restaining Nottingcook trail signs. Needed an O map to get to them error-free.
Before.
After.

Tomorrow promises to break the "1" barrier.

North Haven South-Middle Road loop. Back in just a week. Hadn't seen South Rd for a while. Hot in stretches, esp downwind. A landscape of forest and brown fields as well as occasional coves and water views. Looked for my friend of last Sunday but no one home. Bonafide tired - slept poorly for no good reason other than aboard in Rockland Harbor sans sleeping placebo and fan that more or less serves to assuage tinnitus.

A beckoning view

Orienteering 47:40 [3] 4.05 km (11:46 / km) +129m 10:09 / km

Sunday brown from 2007 BD A meet - don't think I ever ran it right thru, just in pieces. On the dark side in pines after five. Decent steady effort - accurate but having made map & course, any needed relocating is generally not too difficult. #5: belated, big detour. Thought #7 was a boulder but reentrant entered mind along with 5 year old concern if it was a fair point. #11: should have walked last 100m from trail - went up rough open & entered a welter of confusion.

Fun to run up the finish reentrant (in front of cheering crowds), never really utilized due to less than optimal finish placement. Nice to have decent (if familiar) O in the backyard. No AP brown splits entered in '07 for comparison.

N.B. John Keats came on the radar last night when Gillmore was here. Keats didn't live to see 26, ravaged by TB. Finished "Memoirs of a Debulked Woman" by Susan Gubar. A web visit showed she is still living. On knells for whom the bell tolls...

Walking 17:00 [1] 0.6 mi (28:19 / mi)

DP, dewey, crystal clear. Circled the Arena marsh, marveled at height of aspen-like trees, noted the fresh moose tracks, perused Nottingcook map for sign location & also relived two O-ringen courses from last summer. Wondered if it was getting mentally tiring picking thru a lot of detail packed into a small area of map - being there makes all the difference.

Road/trail 38:00 intensity: (19:00 @1) + (19:00 @2) 3.0 mi (12:40 / mi)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

Parked under 89, went down bike path, under 89 to SPS boat house & back on access road, largely in genteel shade. Had etappe 2 & 3 from O-Ringen for company - reading detail necessitated stopping.

Walking 21:00 [1] 0.7 mi (29:59 / mi)

DP to slough, low water in spite of recent rains - beaver-determined, I
guess. Past two morns dark & gloomy with predawn thunder and lightening, up unplugging various at 0330 today.

Leaves turning, squirrels dropping acorns on the skylights.

Road/trail 41:00 intensity: (21:00 @2) + (13:00 @3) + (7:00 @4) 4.3 mi (9:32 / mi) +30m 9:20 / mi
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

Noon to Winant Hill, along base & back. Breezy and dry, improved from
recent humidity. 50/50 alternating for 14', need more of it.

Wednesday Aug 15, 2012 #

Road running 39:52 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (29:52 @3) 4.2 mi (9:30 / mi)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

Noon, hardtop loop, less of these for summer heat reasons - 18' before shade. W. on Clinton, Iron Works, Rockingham etc.

Beth found some summer clothes in a box misplaced for more than 5 yrs. Wore a once-upon-a-time May 13, 1984 Northfield Mt. BG shirt.

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.7 mi (28:34 / mi)

DP, not much of this, a few with Janelle last week. Impressive erosion on slight slope in road from heavy rains.

Looked over shirts in box: NE Champs @ Mt. Tom '78, US Champs @ Boxford, '78, numerous BG shirts '84, '87, '92, '02, various WP & more. Favorite for time being is Boxford - nothing like an old but healthy t shirt.

BHS track on way home from work, overcast so not too hot. 2 800s (3:33,3:37) as a look-see and some 400s etc.

Monday Aug 13, 2012 #

Note

180 mi, Monday, MSO, nap, dinner with Diane & Liz, movie with Beth conspired for a do-nothing-else day. Passed a 2130hrs runner on South St. with bright headlamp out between heat.

Road running 1:00:35 [3] 6.21 mi (9:46 / mi) +110m 9:15 / mi

Foggy/dreary, rain at end. Middle, NSR ccw. Wanted a photo for "memorabilia" - this critter came charging, then led, chased a car in middle of road over a blind hilltop, had to get help to make him stop following. Passed 2 separate female runners - proof when it rains, it pours.

Road running 41:19 intensity: (2:00 @1) + (10:00 @2) + (29:19 @3) 4.39 mi (9:25 / mi) +73m 8:57 / mi
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

North Haven/Pulpit - started about 5:30, no sun but still seemed hot, at least downwind. Went left for a look then back along NSR, total 4 in mind. Got sidetracked into dump/recycle station. Some nice stuff as would be expected in Ritzville. Saw at least 4 bikes in need of minor repairs/adds (pedals/seat) that would have pleased many a less fortunate kid. A gravel road went on pleasantly and unexpectedly, bailed out to road before long. Saw the same runner twice - can't recall ever seeing a runner on N'Haven though there must have been at least one sometime ago - time's travels outran memory long ago.

Road/trail 36:20 [3] 2.44 mi (14:54 / mi) +67m 13:44 / mi
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

Out of work early these Fridays. Headed toward SPS uninspired but then thought of WTF paths I'd run by the other day and seeing where they went - maybe of use to BOS trail making. Was rumbling & quite black but never more than a steady rain. Got to boundary marsh along SVT, primarily for logging - then more or less along stream, then right on path, then followed wall & was quite surprised to see where I was finally. Went further along road, right onto path, took right jct & ended up on WRH Rd & back to car having had a bit of adventure.

SPS wander on slumbering campus. 86F oppressive heat but mostly in shade. Heat=oppression=weight on shoulders=SloGo. Usual water fountains 'dried up' at the track. The days of 48F are on their way. Saw 3 corgies & a gray hound walking together. Had hrm for once.

Road/trail 16:23 [4] 1.11 mi (14:46 / mi) +31m 13:35 / mi

Walking 17:00 [1] 0.6 mi (28:19 / mi)

Parsons DP to avoid Monday am collisions at brush dump. Crisp, dry breeze rustling the leaves! Thought some on a quote (anon) noted on a bronze plaque yesterday on shore of Lonesome Lake: "Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away."
Has a nice twist. Olympic dramas are apropos.
5 PM

Road/trail 38:50 [3] 4.0 mi (9:43 / mi) +100m 9:01 / mi
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

Br. Londonderry Tkpe perusal before Tu BOS mtg. Junk still in same place.Tires had been picked up, 9 noted, & rolled downhill into woods. Went to Page Rd. end & then across to make it two miles out, 4 total. Black tunnel of road entering trees looked for all the world like a man dressed in black coming my way - a spooky thought for some 150 meters. Surprise 305 revelation to see I was about to rejoin BLT at the turnaround.

Woods/trail 2:15:12 [1] 3.03 mi (44:37 / mi) +313m 33:47 / mi

Hike in Franconia Notch area to Lonesome Lake, anything but lonesome on an August weekend. Finished just before lots of rain. Fun to find ourselves siting on Lonesome Lake Hut porch seemingly far from home's routine. Lots of post-Labor Day possibilities.

5 PM

Trail/woods running 17:22 [3] 1.78 mi (9:45 / mi) +40m 9:07 / mi
shoes: New Balance 992

Afternoon Bower loop - that or a nap. Rained which had stopped, seemed to be brightening. But really proved summer torment of bugs, humidity & some heat tho had cooled a lot with rain. Dark, too - PL refreshing to return to. For all the wheezing/huffing, Z really quite game. Some colored leaves on the ground, summer showing its age.

Bear Brook perusal, started about 9:15, already warm at gas station in Hooksett. Went length of field then path to & beyond Hayes Marsh. Noted a "No ATV" sign/boundary - then enough trees dropped across the trail to ensure no ATVs. At one point, entered abruptly into what felt like spring as forest had been selectively cut & cleaned so there was much more light as in leaves not yet out. New logging roads but found the trail suitably named Lost Trail (longstanding name). Then got to back road/trail - hadn't been there in 5 plus years. Passed thru some small pockets of logging making for harsh sun & thick growth - but thankfully small. Passed by the old sandpit (on the NAOC map in my hand fm 1975). A fellow was leaving, having just locked the gate. Struck up a conversation with Armand Verville, the sandpit owner. Had been in his family since '43. They cut wood thru early '50s. Went unused for some 20 years then he made a deal trading remaking road access for sand usage. It had always looked abandoned/forlorn when I passed by over the years. Now, he was well into a reclamation project, making a most attractive pine plantation. Then continued on to the the small reservoir (another Lonesome Lake). Then into the woods over highest hill, on compass, identifying a few features & right across the mapped marsh at the top still every bit there. Then down to the next marsh, hit the trail, went right, got on bigger road not really on map, then back to Podunk & car. Dip in Merrimack on way back.

Midsummer's midday, harsh sun led to Memorial field, Langley, Birch, Rockingham & Bow. Shadow & some breeze by then. Corn is high, community garden full of gardeners' creativity. A bit compelled to run at noon to free up pm but seems to be at a cost.

Note

"Problematical" comes to mind when considering which route to take - very little stands out. 55% of way to #5, I see a reentrant of sorts. I don't see a solid route to an attack point - maybe looking left & right into depressions in first part, then hanging on to every single feature, finally form knoll in east part of circle. Visibility was excellent? - somewhere there needs be a helping hand. What puzzles soluble rock provides!
