Walking 17:00 [1] 0.7 mi (24:17 / mi)

Yesterday's splendid spider webs not to be found - must be less dew. Was back in pm but the dry air & breeze had caused them to disappear. Wonder how long it takes to make such a marvellous web...

Road/trail 42:00 intensity: (7:00 @1) + (35:00 @2) 4.0 mi (10:30 / mi)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

Over Winant Hill, by water tower, return Auburn. Harsh in sun, pretty good in woods.

Woods/trail 35:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (25:00 @2) 3.0 mi (11:40 / mi)

Woods/trail 1:09:37 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (49:37 @2) + (10:00 @3) 5.18 mi (13:26 / mi)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

About 5 laps around Dix loop, 0.9 mi/loop - goal was 5mi. Some shade, some breeze. Jasper joined for a loop. To think some 2000 men worked the quarries once on this then-treeless island.
5 PM

Road/trail 22:38 intensity: (14:38 @2) + (8:00 @3) 1.71 mi (13:12 / mi) +3m 13:08 / mi

PM again - 4 shorter loops with some effort.

Woods/trail 43:00 [2] 3.0 mi (14:20 / mi)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

No idea where to run after work - headed home (direction driven by empty gas tank) and ideas, by proximity, presented themselves. Mary Baker Eddy drive came & went - been there, did that. Voila...stopped at trail end of path to forest on Rob Road - don't think it has a name but should. Negotiated various trail options. Spent some time recalling Z beating up on M winter '01 on the path underfoot & Beth waiting to pick the three of us up at the end of the long puppy jog.

More contours than I recalled. Many local mapping possibilities, yet few solutions.

SPS XC after work, pleasant, dry day but still 80Fish. Doggin' it, when will dog days cease? A few OK splits plus jog/walk.

Tuesday Jul 24, 2012 #

Walking 17:00 [1] 0.6 mi (28:19 / mi)

DP on the late side, shadows disappearing on Parson's Way. Lots of lots for sale, scraggly vegetation abounds post forest cutting. A future of traffic congestion on Allen.

Heard the loud cracking of a tree branch or trunk at 0154 but no sound of hitting ground. Looked around this am, upward. Beth spotted fairly lg tree on ground not far away - had fallen w/o fanfare. Maybe 2 hours cleanup but more firewood for the future.

Walking 30:00 [1] 0.5 mi (59:59 / mi)

Day of no expectation - went to BHS soccer field for good, soft grass & open sky. Stretch & walk. BHS football practice, getting an early start.

Hopkinton loop fancied by the drive there the other day. Parked at Old Holmes/Sugar Hill jct, went cw. First place passed was Bob & Inga's, barely recognized it. Lots of dirt road, just traffic on Rt. 77 for maybe 0.4mi. Lots of nice vistas. Tad buggy in places. Last mile fooled me - about all up, had rolling in mind. 84F, humid. Closer look at some of the downfall from the microburst. Look forward to same loop on a fall or winter day. 30mi RT for 7.2 run.

Roadside - 14" across

Coldwell Banker sign on tree: "Cheaper today"

A few seconds' wrath

Didn't leave house at all until nearly 5p. Got stuff done, dogs a pesty increasing crescendo of expectation. Did try to clean stream bottom with some success but getting up to knees in muck & water. Getting stuff done is satisfying, not always fun.

shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

From Peter's camp at Merrymeeting Lake to end of S. Shore Rd. Surprised there was no path continuing. Went a ways in woods, came upon Camp Carefree & turned around. 50/50 most of way back. Sat view shows persistence would have been rewarded but 5mi was enough anyway.

Swim after, buoyancy isn't as good as it used to be.

Woods/trail 20:00 intensity: (7:00 @1) + (10:00 @2) + (3:00 @4) 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Intended 2 figure 8s outback but not convinced w/ dogs along. Of course, ever so eager to go but on second, Z breathing heavy, M well behind, so ran 1st & 4th splits of second and walked 2 & 3. No shirt, no bugs to speak of if in motion.

Newest TIME w/ some Olympic coverage - Lolo Jones on the cover, choke & pressure were 2 of the themes for Olympians.

Friday Jul 20, 2012 #

Walking 17:00 [1] 0.5 mi (33:59 / mi)

DP, in bug-free Sandbox mostly - inspecting Sandskrit, mostly washed away - some fresh heart-shaped deer prints however.

Ride with Beth to Hopkinton last eve to see microburst damage - an area maybe 2 by 2 or 2 by 3 mi with countless trees down, broken etc but so spread out. Sad mess, not much house damage surprisingly.

Jog up Kearsage Mt road. A story is in order.

Finally succeeded in getting to top, third try. First was around Memorial Day, gate closed but, heck, hadn't called or investigated - went there thinking it might/should be open. Before second visit (maybe 2 wks later), called local PD and then state park hdqtrs in Concord & was reassured road was now open by staff there (calling direct was a VM, not of benefit). Goal was not to repeat first visit! Got there around 5p, gate locked, no one in house at gate, new sign says "last car 4p". Not too pleased (56mi RT), left a signed note re need to communicate better. Fast forward a month or so. Decided to look at web site to see if anything has changed. Web site says open til 7:30p Fri-Sun. So arrive around 4:30 - can see gate is closed fm 100 yds away! However, mgr is there, talking on phone. Think re keeping calm/collected - finally she's done. Tell her my story. She tells me there is a phony web site w/ different hours due to someone trying to extort the state. There is no 7:30 closing (I looked @ .org & .com sites and am still confused). Last car up 4p and side gate locked 5:30 after mgr makes a drive up mt to make sure everyone has left. She can see that this is an unhappy camper she's chatting with. Voila, she proposes a sol'n! She'll open the gate, we can "play" and lock the locked-looking side gate upon departure. As she's driving back down at the end of day & I'm trying to run up, I'm able to thank her for her flexibility - not so easy to find these days.

BB, rerun brown course from last fall. Drove to BB around 7a, gate
attendant there already. O for change of weekday routine: was at start by
7:45. Forgot bug repellent but it was on cool side & was in sufficient motion
for most part. First half of one was really quite green and when I could
see a ways, I was shakey as to location and missed by being too far left. #7,
contours aren’t mapped right…? Have missed before – was making sure I would not this time. 45” on 1, 15” on 3, 45” on 7 (plus getting stuck in log – 30”), 30” on 9, 30” being on wrong side of some downed pines on 10. Up to 3.5’ mistakes. RRs at least provide some competition. Planned on swim at swim area but gated off at 0830. Drove to Lambert Pk on Merrimack and found a small sandy beach w/ convenient pkng., sofa for using, warm water. Then direct to work in excellent frame of mind.

Summer comfort

Thought this was a rr but not entirely as earlier course had 2 additional controls

Jog to ST - ran by but just a bit before waking up to that fact. Felt strange having the depression all to myself - recollections of numerous faces were brief company. Looked up to the hillside vantage from where I'd taken photos of those faces - then 'time to go' bugs said.

To slough, low water. Missed stepping on a garter snake by an inch.

Walking 18:00 [1] 0.5 mi (35:59 / mi)

Around the small marsh, tadpole ponds dried. WGBF said c. 100F for Boston. Probably better off inside at gym but not particularly attractive.

Heard from mapper who sent a flight itinerary so seems like BB project will be happening!

Summer swelter slugfest (95F*): BBR, WH, Allen - first time in ages. Pretty good on WH road w/ breeze at times. Walked several times. Had Hammond Rocks O map for occasional distraction. Noted paintball-messed kiosk mentioned by BD. Sat in 18" in brook at end, surprised dogs on bridge in role reversal.

*And a new in-house oven after all these years (since '78).

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.6 mi (33:19 / mi)

DP, hot day in store, sun already warm. Rained fairly hard last night, first real rain in some weeks. Rain at night w/o wind, t/l, downed branches and sun in am is how it should be.

BHS track around 6p. Rained earlier, a breeze on one stretch but still pretty hot. 8:13, 7:59 bug-free, keep-in-touch training.

Trophic woods visit - long way from day's beginning. Nasty buggy woods! Did
one loop - had considered two but enough of self-flagellation. Then 5x a PL hill, open thus few bugs but still heat/humidity.

Bog jog, later than intended. Lots of DFs but cap and nylon 'shawl' over singlet were pretty effective. Maybe slower than otherwise for dogs' sake. Stopped at shooting gallery - no change except the target stand that said "use but do not destroy, please" was destroyed. Also stopped for some water lily views and noted several cords of cut, split, stacked and covered wood on the private lot in the heart of Nottingcook.

Road/trail 13:35 [3] 1.81 mi (7:30 / mi) +2m 7:29 / mi

BHS around 6:30, field I had in mind was being used. Lower field offered 1/2 way around in complete shade. All grass surface, just comfortable striding. Tried 2 barefoot but not really comfortable in that style. No bugs, blue over head. Thought it was an easy 200yds but just short - not in touch with football field length. Thought I did 20...

Best of day: enroute, a gaggle of geese was crossing the road. The leading two were taking slowly-measured steps in front of oncoming traffic which was patiently waiting.

Note

Back to NH thru Starksboro, then 17E thru the 'App Gap' to 100 to Waitsfield to 100B & IS 89. Stopped at VFR, where, off our rocker, we purchased one. Green hills of Vermont day, got to 88F in Concord. Ernestness dissipated after yard work session.

Ascutney hike on Windsor Tr on Jenn's 50th with most of family. Up & up, thought Z&M might give out but they did fine. Settled for observation tower as summit did not offer a view. Did not have the inclination to savour the view from West Peak, a hang gliders' perch. Long trip down, observed young people move downward with aplomb, old people brake with each step. Jenn's choice of hike, back to Burlington for a party after.

BHS about 6:30, 4 laps around soccer field, 1/3rd shade, very green & all to myself with Turee Pond backdrop. Back to track at end. 2:16, 2:09, 2:08, 2:04 for grass; 1:47, 1:39 track. Ran into RL!

Drove by new Marjory Swope park on Long Pond Rd earlier today: 73 ac conservation easement, parking, path, lovely hardwood forest on side of Jerry Hill, commanding view of Penacook Res. on top.

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.7 mi (28:34 / mi)

DP, walked c. 0.7 mi reading the paper (and staying in open to avoid DFs). Stopped to see what the Fri pm target shooter might have left behind: 3 different casings - 9mm Luger, 270 Win & generic, possibly 30 in all lying on sand. Went to see what's what with tadpoles: water dried up, swamp level down a foot. A great blue rose slowly, having had breakfast disturbed. It slowly circled looking like a miniature version of a pterodactyl (?), then settled on one of the PL towers, its thin neck and body, small head and stick legs presenting an interesting silhouette against the drab sky. Back to car, finished a good My Turn re the Wm Loeb, 50 y/o NH Pledge (no income/sales tax) and coaxed the dogs into the car with treats....Z clumsy and handicapped but enthusiasm-driven, Mocha merely floating up & beyond the rear bumper, drooling all the while.

Track 28:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (10:00 @2) + (8:00 @3) 3.0 mi (9:20 / mi)

BHS track at 5:30, wouldn't call it hot but it was better when sun was behind cloud plus there was a decent SW breeze. Really a rest day but wanted to "get out" & acres of grass, shade for exercises called. 1:58, 1:56, 1:51 400s - amazing to think how impossible twice that speed (which doesn't even seem reasonable to describe as 'speed') would be a 1:58 800.

Fixated on BB in am. Found a mapper for the next phase, thinking of taking a summer fling survey - curious re visibility in designated section. Mapper would be working starting around 8/22.

A period of record drought, heat, fire, flood, tornado...105F in DC today.
Are there any morons who deny climate change still?

Purgatory loop, out early, done by 0815, beat the heat. Think this might have been first time in summer. Deer flies were thick on Kimball Pond stretch. Know this route well enough to visualize what's ahead quite accurately. No one staring back in the Greenwood farm barnyard; further on, the alpacas were shorn of their coats. Drove to MHT after, a borrowed cell, from a man collecting his am paper, facilitating dropping the rental car off.

Walking 41:00 [1] 1.34 mi (30:35 / mi)

Returned to Thyua with Beth. Had considered hike to Jordan Pond but rain & miles to go had a way of changing plans. Things one might do with time in a garden:

Warmup

Salad greens

Topsy turvy

This guy landed on me so I understandably gave him a (gentle) wallop. He fell to the ground. I picked him up for study.
He was not dead or obviously mangled.

NEH end of day, to Thyua Garden looking lovely with late pm sun. Headed toward Asticou but came to road & decided I preferred woods so went back to Eliot Mt jct. & up to summit, hard to tell where and several cairns seemingly proclaiming same. A sign pointed to Thyua in a most unexpected direction. Followed that path back as I felt guilty having jogged thru
a sancturary to be savored. Late in the day, how nice it would have been to hear music from a lute, guitar or harp.

A run on Matinicus...tied to ferry pier (1-2 visits a month), considered a dark water dip upon returning. We’d seen some 13ish y/o girls jumping in there last eve. I could see it was possible to “make friends” with the water, dark water phobia be damned. A map w/o scale so get a sense...2 miles long of island, 6” of depiction. Miss some turns. Stop at church (which, of course, is unlocked) - try phone inside but don’t have # allowing distance call & no cell here. Go N & take right turn for the shade. Feels like a walk in Scandanavia to an O start but where are all the people? Glimpse a house thru trees so return to junction & go L this time. Summer rose everywhere. Right there, at an abandoned house, read “a loyal friend is better than 1000 relatives”. Continue & come upon the airstrip, go to water’s edge & then make my way back to four corners where I go straight (yesterday we went straight on the opposite option). Hear a solitary rooster along the way. Pass school, PO & cemetery. With some confusion, find road to South Sand beach, passed by yesterday entering Matinicus Roads...so very different an experience from land side. Have a “chariots of fire” moment on the shore cooled with a dip. Maine water is very cold. Think I might be on nature trail but not so & back to main road, cemetery & turn right this time for Bakery in Eva’s (signs to same) home. Yard full of vehicles, cooking gas canisters, one friendly old dog. Inside, I pick two blueberry coffee cakes the likes/heft/promise of which I have never seen. Back to the waterfront & chat with a woman who visits her SO in summer months. They bought a place at harborside in ’05. He’s a tatooed Kiwi who lives there year round (winter pop 20...). She is an academician who now works in DC. PhD in epidemiology and ran that dep’t at Yale medical school but was too often passed up & moved on. We talked briefly about ty 2 DM (pointed out its invasion of Iceland and China, a Western disease of obesity), how people might spend their time in such lonely winter outposts: alcohol & drugs & more & etc.... Back to boat where Beth was beginning to wonder where I was.
