Track 22:06 [4] 4.8 km (4:36 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

at BHS track, 3 X 1600, 10' cycle: 7:39, 7:14, 7:13. Sharp pain left groin in starting warmup, disappeared, seems ok an hr later. Nearly 80 deg but SW wind. Even pace, just a start, point is to run some but not get injured....

Track 15 [2] 2.4 km (6 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

warmup, down

Road running 48:12 [3] 4.8 mi (10:02 / mi)

Road running 54:38 [3] 6.9 mi (7:55 / mi) +130m 7:29 / mi
shoes: New Balance 992

Home fm NHH, not since 5/12. Close to 80 deg in sun, thirsty, felt strong, did not work hard until last 3 splits & then could have done more...PR, always nice to experience those rare times when legs can go & go.

Trail/woods running 43:10 [3] 4.3 mi (10:02 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

usual noon w/ Diane, mix of road, grass & woods trail. Feet still complaining about what would have been next to impossible in O shoes (Monday's course).

Orienteering race 59:35 [4] *** 6.6 km (9:02 / km) +265m 7:31 / km
spiked:13/12c shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Team Trials classic - third good run in a row, quite unusual. Very rocky ground, very happy with trail shoes for cushioning. Unhappy w/ route choice on #2 since i did not do what I had decided to do (run around to left on phone line vs over top & deal with the myriad paths). Went to 4 before 3, did not realize I did so until I got to three, then back to four (reward is spiking more controls than there were). Lost less than I thought I suppose as 4 was enroute but RC to three was higher, on road - entire area was as rocky as it gets. Most pleased that left groin strain did not worsen, at all, & did not affect - could feel it driving down with pollen-induced coughing etc. Beat TIm P & Glen T by some seconds. All in all, excellent weekend, great maps, weather, effort by DVOA.

Episode of the flat tire, AAA taking nearly 3 hrs, well past bedtime to fix, getting caught by local police driving wrong way on 1 way to save seconds to get to bed sooner (lost some 12' there) - to bed by 1150, no ticket....

Orienteering race 35:36 [4] *** 3.72 km (9:34 / km) +150m 7:58 / km
spiked:12/14c

Middle Distance 3.72k, 150m climb. Perfect weather, good course in generally green woods, well-mapped. Good run, less than 1' mistakes on 1 & 6. Best green x time (9.57'/k) Parking in field very much reminded me of a European meet, all the sun as well. Visited boulder field after, incredible work of nature 15-20,000yrs ago.

Trail/woods running 20 [3]

warm-up etc 20' first 2 days

Orienteering race 19:01 [5] * 2.54 km (7:29 / km) +55m 6:45 / km
spiked:14/15c shoes: Brooks Cascadia

BrGrOr Sprint 2.54k, 19:01, 7.29?/k second to a M50 Norwegian visitor (per Eric Weyman). Very good run, only second to last control where I lost maybe 8 secs due to confusion - was looking at bldg corner when the control was higher up at end of hedge. Neat, busy map w/ many bldgs, very accurate. Left groin muscle did not bother me & still does not even tho I am aware of it.

382 mi, 7.25 hrs w/ maybe 40' stops. 202/9, Keene, Brattleboro, 91S, Ma tkpe to TSP to 84 to 209 thru DWG, Shroudsburg, 33S/22W to Bethlehem. Like all the pastorality of this route. Dorm room which is fine, window open, birds singing, people playing outside w/ frisbee on hardtop, a bit of tolerable city.

Friday May 23, 2008 #

Note

Rest day, left groin muscle protesting. When I learned I might get $1000 for my old Volvo I went home at lunch hr & vacuumed & cleaned it a bit instead of running w/ Diane...likely $500 worth of cleaning in 40':)

Orienteering 54:00 [3] 5.0 km (10:48 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Fall BD brown course at Nottingcook plus some k to & from. Walk/jog, 'not an easy course' to quote or to perceive... scratchy (like Pawtuckaway), thickish forest. Left groin pull fm last night, wait and see. Z&M satisfied for once.

Trail/woods running race 21:59 [5] 3.1 mi (7:05 / mi)

Concord Hospital 5k - thought I'd be below 21:30 so disappointed there.
Stood in chilly air & then rain for a bit too long. 5200+ entrants, but incl walkers. 6:54 (felt faster), 7:17 (sl up), 7:09 (up & down), :40. Wanted maybe 6:40, 6:50, 7+. Good food, lots of freebies etc. 23:30+/- 2 yrs ago. I'd do well to go to track & remind myself of 6:30mi pace.

Trail/woods running 14:21 [4] 2.14 mi (6:42 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

Again at SPS XC, no warmup, best splits yet, goal was to be able to continue at end. Last some 6 sec slower than yest.

Trail/woods running 14:23 [4] 2.14 mi (6:43 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

SPS XC, cool day. Wanted a short day, need some rest for Wed 5k.

14:23 nc - 142,205.212,311,229,244

PR, only bit that got me OOB was last split, grad uphill. Thought I should run another although that was not my initial plan. Started but w/o enthusiasm so stopped after first split which was 2:36, good start but so what:). Dissolve resolve.

Sunday May 18, 2008 #

Trail/woods running 44:40 [4] 6.3 mi (7:05 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

3 XC loops at SPS first thing - about 60, blue, lt N'ly breeze. Started at SPS side vs 89. Have not done so in long, long time, prefer latter. Always of benefit to start running downhill. Even loosened up 800m as it was first thing vs mid or late day. Felt tired on first (must be left over fm yest), 2nd better/NC direction, third had the 300 split - not sure where that came fm...but long slow backside fm this direction.

Orienteering 4:00:00 [1] 5.8 mi (41:23 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

With Peter Andersen just east of BBSP. Met at Podunk pkng lot but gates to interior of pk closed & walk on USGS started some dist away so drove to South Rd & used area to east. Had about 10 pts, went to 6. Fun stuff, always a surprise w/ outdtd USGS map - many, many logging trails/rds, some pretty ponds/marshes. We were off by some 200m at one time (streamers on surveyed/mapped town border was tip) & it was quite awhile before we figured out what had happened. Also usual passing right by houses & barns, 3 dogs, no interactions. Good rogaine practice for me, nice to have company. When I got home Beth presented me with a painted turtle she'd saved on Rt 101...lucky she didn't get killled...

Trail/woods running 33:17 [3] 3.3 mi (10:05 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

XC SPS lap plus one mi on track w/ Diane who is running a race at 0830 & then at 1100 tomorrow & another Sun. Go easy, twinges in thigh, hypochondriasis or otherwise. Less than wk to CH R&R.

Thursday May 15, 2008 #

Road running 29:17 [3] 3.1 mi (9:27 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

jogged CH Rock & Race 5k course w/ D&D, that's a help. Ran by our gud fer nuttin guvener - guy I like to dislike - on Main St. Still no prob w/ running tho can't sleep on left side due to aching.

Trail/woods running 29:13 [4] 4.28 mi (6:50 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

2 SPS XC laps, 70 deg, ovcst, no water bottle...bothersome due to forgetfulness.

14:46 - classic, 240,220,314,225,221,146
14:27 - nc, 142,204,211,314,228,248

Sl twinge inside lt thigh on second, made me wonder should I stop - but OK. Bit hypochondrical but better than being injured for a month or two.
BTDT so should benefit fm experience. Pleased w/ sub-15's, esp 14:27 w/o much effort, so different fm prior yrs.

Road running 37:10 [3] 3.7 mi (10:03 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

run @ noon w/ Diane - amounts to a second rest day, occ rt thigh throbbing but not when I run

Tuesday May 13, 2008 #

Road running 45:38 [3] 3.5 mi (13:02 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

w/ Diane, cut across some dandalion-speckled fields into green woods before another field. Not Diane's cup of tea. Take-it-easy day. Right thigh sore (occ aching throb) undoubtedly fm yesterday's run as well as too much mileage for MSK system. Need to be careful or I'll end up on the rocks.

Road running 57:10 [4] 6.9 mi (8:17 / mi) +130m 7:50 / mi
shoes: New Balance 992

Home fm NHH, not since 4/28 which was a surprise. Felt so so but loosened up, thought a 57 was in order & it was. First left mtp has gone off radar, hard stub @ WP was issue, just running it gets by.

Mapping/fieldwork/meet prep 1:30:00 [1] 1.8 mi (50:00 / mi)

AM mapping, black flies if standing still. Peasley Hill area, quiet Sun am.
Found a nice stone wall, looked up alot to see if conifers were the distinctive veg seen by Pat 20 yrs ago, usually so.

Road running 55:43 [3] 5.7 mi (9:47 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

PM run sans dogs, mostly hardtop...felt sluggish at start, got better, good views on Wood Hill. For some reason, felt tired most of weekend. Took Branch Londonderry Tkpe off BBR, been a few yrs, still 'unspoiled' tho' when I see streamers & survey markers I wonder as well as become aggravated.

Saturday May 10, 2008 #

Mapping/fieldwork/meet prep 1:20:00 [1] 1.5 mi (53:20 / mi)

Fieldwork at Peasley Hill, a few pleasing moments when things linked or percveived mistake was not etc

Orienteering 50:17 [3] 4.0 km (12:34 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Nottingcook w/ Z&M around 4pm, ran/walked one blue leg fm Boulder Dash plus other woods stuff, leaves just coming out; BG 1 yr fm today.
Almost always small map changes.

Road running 36:20 [3] 3.8 mi (9:34 / mi)

w/ Diane & David, short loop at lunch - gmaps pedometer measurement.

Trail/woods running 44:28 [4] 6.3 mi (7:03 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

3 SPS XC loops - goal: even pace, finish not be out of breath/tired;
post work, temp about 60, overcst. Can't recall if I've ever done 3. Distance still a bit uncertain (2.14etc for now)

Trail/woods running 44:13 [3] 4.3 mi (10:17 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

noontime w/ Diane @ SPS, mostly trails & grass.

Wednesday May 7, 2008 #

Trail/woods running 14:58 [4] 2.14 mi (7:00 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

SPS XC at lunch, shoes felt streamlined, singlet, good energy, ran sub-15 & could have cont'd with another - new phenomenon. A 15:20 or so usually made me really ready to stop. 244,223,319,225,222,143. temp around 65 deg.

Trail/woods running 14:28 [4] 2.14 mi (6:46 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

second loop, 5' rest, 'non-classic' direction (first classic) which is faster,
get ahead in splits, stay ahead. Still some water on trails. This was a pleasing workout. 142,203,209,315,230,247.

Tuesday May 6, 2008 #

Road running 59:28 [3] 6.04 mi (9:51 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

From home to Garry's to pick up Volvo which had been in their lot 4 days. !st left MTP ok in running but very sore later at work, limp, limp, now better, however. Meghan xrayed it for me - DJD/narrowing due to injury 2 yrs ago & more running now & stub on Sunday.

Monday May 5, 2008 #

Trail/woods running 22:17 [3] 2.4 mi (9:17 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

lap around cart tracks in Nottingcook w/dogs, left toe was OK. Splendid May, ran over some ice/snow....

Sunday May 4, 2008 #

Orienteering race 59:20 [4] *** 5.79 km (10:15 / km) +225m 8:35 / km
spiked:8/11c shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Classic, drier but still visibility distraction. Good energy. #3&6, I rounded the wrong knoll, went to spur vs knoll, & much to my surprise, no control. #4 just plain missed, relocated N 90m at a water stop/pond. Maybe 3.5' mistakes. Shoes offered decent protection fm ground but stubbed 1st left MTP which was not good. PG 57:51, Jeff Saeger 57:10, Glen 58:31,TP 59:06.

Note

Return via 9D, 84, TSP & same way as going; again some 5 1/3hrs, 45' stops; went thru downtown Northhampton looking for Burger King. 283mi return, 637 mi total. Peter Anderson there w/ kids. Nice meet by cadets with Sat eve lidar & how-sprint-map-was-made presentation. More rain by Popolopen, still better at Buckner than anywhere else by my reckoning. North TSP offered many beautiful views.

Saturday May 3, 2008 #

Orienteering race 43:11 [4] *** 3.8 km (11:22 / km) +160m 9:23 / km
spiked:11/12c shoes: Brooks Cascadia

AM Middle Distance -- Good run/energy (temp hi 40's), esp considering drizzle. Missed the first, lost maybe 90". Several controls were really tucked tight by feature. Glenn T 41+, Tim Parson 42+, PG 43:50 something.

Orienteering race 17:53 [5] *** 2.5 km (7:09 / km) +60m 6:23 / km
spiked:15/16c shoes: Brooks Cascadia

PM sprint - also good run. Only missed # 13, would have missed 15 were it not for Malvin Harding. PG was 28" faster (we were only 2 under 18'), Glenn above 19, I think, Tim above 24... Not used to ISSOM legend which caused some confusion - gray for wall & unpaved gravel, namely.

Friday May 2, 2008 #

Note

Drive to West Point lv 2pm, 5hrs20', maybe 45' stopping - Rte9/Keene, Brattleboro, 91S to Mass Pike to TSP, 84W & 87S to Central Valley for diner stop - considered CV Best Value but went on to Buckner for night by lake in drizzle - well worth it as CV is frightfully developed, noisy etc. 284 mi to CV, 290 to Buckner.

Thursday May 1, 2008 #

Road running 45:47 [3] 4.8 mi (9:32 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

w/ David at noon, still brisk, thru SPS, ankle deep water one place, 2 prs new shoes 2 successive days.

Mapping/fieldwork/meet prep 1:00:00 [1]

worked on Peasley Rd area - would do better to spend mapping time in more productive area as this has little competition potential - but really, this is only unchecked part.
