Walking 1:02:51 [1] 1.54 mi (40:49 / mi) +94m 34:19 / mi

Rookery & Hemlock with W. Great day in the making - still early enough to be chilly. T got to 50F, big, orange moon rise. Saw one fellow & dog - W was ecstatic. Rallied the Forerunner 310XT, how to use came back easily enough. Hardest was finding the charging clip. Wasn't sure where I'd find Garmin Connect but that also proved easy. Strava won't work on my too-much-filled phone, no storage space left with 16 gigs.

Walking 30:00 [1]

4 pm walk with Willow under the power line. Always marvel at the slow but inexorable vegetation change in open areas, on its way to becoming unrecognizable after 10 or so years.

Walking 35:00 [1] 1.0 mi (35:00 / mi)

About a mile on Rob Rd trail on a very wet, dreary Thanksgiving Day. Time to try the whole thing, ride to start and pickup at end like the Z&M days.

PT exercise 30:00 [1]

At Foothills with Brigette. Good balance progress in the past months.

Note

Brush dump with Willow around 3:45. She was most disobedient when it came time to get back in the car. Then she heard the voices of two boys biking in the dunes and I was a forgotten, getting-quite-annoyed voice. Took some time to get her disobedient self reigned in.
12 PM

Walking 54:53 [1] 1.41 mi (38:56 / mi) +2m 38:45 / mi

SPS after work, before PT. Ghost town quiet, day before a COVID Thanksgiving. The only other living thing I saw.

Walking 50:43 [2] 1.15 mi (44:06 / mi) +72m 36:55 / mi

With Ken D & W. Clear, distant view, nr 3/4ths moon coming. Forgot to restart gps as we started down. Ken knows a lot of local info. - fun to learn what's behind the scenes.

Walking 42:19 [1] 1.23 mi (34:23 / mi) +33m 31:44 / mi

Stoneybrook - went to T & decided to go on - then decided I didn't want to go back the same way so went around, Parsons etc. Had Willow in the front seat. The station wagon was at the shop. She was shaking at first, scared about the unfamiliar, not on her terms I guess.

Orienteering 2:10:03 [2] 3.24 mi (40:08 / mi) +36m 38:48 / mi

Nottingcook from Ordway home. Gray day, pleasant enough though. What change on Ordway - thru the cemetery, into a very nice hemlock and hardwood forest. Hadn't seen early part of this walk in years. Swamp & muck avoidance at end wore thin. Changing scenery. Tired by end and a good outing.

MRI 11/22 a year ago today marking real change.

Walking 1:14:18 [2] 2.29 mi (32:27 / mi)

From end of WH road with Willow - one way, picked up the car later.
Stopped to see if this marker was still present after some 6 years.

Drive to Henniker later, Colby Hill and Liberty Hill roads were new and interesting. Maps mislead and we found ourselves right in front of a rural farmhouse at the dead-end top of the hill.

Walking 1:03:14 [1] 1.41 mi (44:51 / mi) +20m 42:57 / mi

With W toward end of day. Spent at least 5' sitting in car trying to figure out where I wanted to go. Settled on 'out back'. Warm, pleasant as could be. Walked an old find-again, lose again-path for the fun of it.

Listened to Moth Radio some of the time: a woman driving a supply delivery truck to Prudhoe Bay in AK and a 24 y/o in prison who finally took a stand over a bag of pretzels, both very good.

No poles.

Note

...what we call 'invasives.' Whether vegetation, animals, pathogens, or humans. And usually caused by the careless hand of mankind....

Amen to inclusion of 'humans' - we are the ultimate weed/invasive. Round us up! Population control is a start. Good luck in that regard.
11 AM

Walking 1:17:00 [1] 2.5 mi (30:48 / mi) +89m 27:44 / mi

From SPS boathouse with W. Got surprise call from RG and talked the phone out of power about halfway thru. Continued up to dam & field and back on Dunbarton Rd. Call it 2.5 mi. No poles.

Orienteering 1:28:29 [2] 1.99 mi (44:28 / mi) +55m 40:57 / mi

With W from BBR end of WH. Passed the refuse areas and then up into woods. Found a new trail on the forest boundary. Who ever knew the boundary existed, surprise - what 10 plus years can accomplish. Map & compass, no poles, balance pretty good.

Not quite a bridge to nowhere but did not have time to find either start or end. A journey for another time.

Had to throw out a lot of "junk' in my 16g i phone storage to be able to reload Strava. I haven't used my Garmin watch in maybe 2 years. Could not find the charger for it today.

Monday Nov 16, 2020 #

Walking 50:00 [1] 1.5 mi (33:20 / mi)

Easement walk with Eric T - Lindquist land by Dow & 3A. Mostly backyard, rebar or small pipes for boundary markers - found 6/8, front and center with the backs of private homes. Compass was very helpful. If we were noticed, no one challenged us. Gray, about 50F. I was last there 11/18/2014.

Strava won't reload - too little space, I think, on the phone.

Walking 25:00 [1]

Power line & close by with W. Got above the sand pit which is looking pretty big, even interesting, if one has an eye for such things.

Walking 50:22 [1] 1.23 mi (40:58 / mi) +78m 34:13 / mi

With Beth & W. Gray, quiet somber November - rain due but not yet. Went to DD first as usual - treat was two glazed sticks. Dark at 4:45 now. Came home to find the second chipmunk in the Hav-a-hart - took it to the brush dump to a mammoth pile of shelter, if not home.

11 AM

Walking 53:42 [1] 1.64 mi (32:45 / mi) +20m 31:33 / mi

With Beth & W. on Life Tr mostly. Mostly cloudy, November wx - brown woods so open now. Saw 6 MTBers and 3 dog walkers - W goes bonkers but either not allowed or not welcome to play.

Friday Nov 13, 2020 #

Walking 30:00 [1]

With W on the power line. Friday pm, drizzle, gray, brown, drab November for a change. W was full of zip, me not so much but enjoying simplicity outside.

PT exercise 30:00 [2]

q 2wk session with Brigitte. How many times could I rise and sit in a chair hands across chest...15. I'll have to work on that. Not sure how many a fit 74 y/o should be able to do. Weak thighs et al from when all hell broke loose.
8 AM

Walking 5:16 [1] 0.25 mi (20:40 / mi)

Reacquainted w/ 20'/mi pace - never have been a fast walker.
10 AM

Walking (Nordic walking) 1:00:48 [2] 1.15 mi (52:52 / mi) +76m 43:52 / mi

With Willow, very warm, lo 70s. Graying up, sw wind. To height of PL and left - one surprise track or trail after in the old logged area another took me there.
Great Hill spilling over into chaos.

Monday Nov 9, 2020 #

PT exercise 20:00 [1]

at SPS on way home.
12 PM

Walking 54:24 [1] 1.41 mi (38:35 / mi) +84m 32:33 / mi

Elm Brook after work. Shorts & T shirt. Just plain tired for some reason. Put my head down on a picnic table for 15'.

Kayaking 1:03:31 [1] 1.54 mi (41:15 / mi) +2m 41:05 / mi

Kimball Pond on a quiet, flat-as-glass surface. Did this solo which was a first experience (in 6 yrs) in getting a two-person kayak on & off the trailer, in and out of water. Couldn't find the beaver dam which, from the top of it, looks like it should be easy enough to find from the water but not so. Also, the grass limits how far in one can comfortably paddle. That's it for the year - considerable work but at least manageable. Things have understandably changed physically in the past 6 years.

Kayaking 1:03:35 [1] 1.44 mi (44:10 / mi)

Turee kayaking with Beth. Went to SPS but the gate was closed. I'd considered that but still was surprised on a fine Sat am around 9:30 to find it closed. Went to BHS to discover there was a football game but not a soul at the boat launch. Never saw anyone by the water or on the pond. Calm to light breeze. Saw a turtle which came as a considerable surprise to me, anyway.
4 PM

Walking (Nordic walking) 30:12 [2] 1.01 mi (29:55 / mi) +70m 24:37 / mi

Great Hill with Willow at end of day, 1/2 hr before sunset. Open grass areas had been cut which I found pleasing. Sunset was full-on ablaze. Got back to car at dark, having made good use of a very mellow day.

Walking 43:20 [1] 1.17 mi (36:59 / mi) +22m 34:56 / mi

St. Paul's with W. Temp over 70F. Some trail, woods & fields.

Orienteering 2:14:21 [2] 2.93 mi (45:51 / mi) +56m 43:17 / mi

O walk with W at BBSP, start 10am. Incredibly mellow day. I saw alot of open hardwood woods with long views. Saw a # of hunter trucks but no one in the woods. Stopped to admire Bear Hill pond at the start and the old CCC/4-H camp after. 1/10 map but very small features on paper (hard to make out) were quite apparent in the terrain given the complexity in some areas.

Felt pretty good about balance, energy so so.

Walking 58:25 [1] 2.21 mi (26:26 / mi) +16m 25:51 / mi

With W. Mild, inspiring afternoon. Needed sun & Elm Brook delivered.
No poles, walked fast on the dike for me.
November brown & bare

12 PM

Walking (Nordic walking) 50:08 [1] 1.37 mi (36:35 / mi) +36m 33:50 / mi

With W, windy, windy. Turee full of whitecaps. Ambled across fields and & thru bare, brown woods. Encountered one probably homeless person sitting on a log with backpack. Don't think he was a hunter - had no color on.

3 PM

Walking 39:08 [1] 1.17 mi (33:27 / mi) +41m 30:10 / mi

With Beth & W. Everything dressed in gray and brown, fitting for November 1st, early dark and rain coming. Forgot my nordic walking sticks which says more than that - for flat surfaces anyway.
