Cardio 35:57 [3] 2.24 mi (16:03 / mi) +1m 16:02 / mi
ahr:116 max:139

BHS track late morning. Very windy from the NW - cool, dry, a world apart from Tuesday. Last was a 300 which got the HR to 140. Entered the Boulder Dash today - enough of ambivalence.

Cardio 33:15 [3] 2.22 mi (14:59 / mi) +3m 14:55 / mi

BHS at 9am, already on the warm side. A period of record temps, c. 90F today. Legs were flat, maybe from yesterday's weight w/o? Slowest times yet.
Stopped at a mirror-like Turee after.

GPS was far off at start. Not even in correct parking lot. Had Mocha - spent the first 25' walking her & picking up trash. Maybe 12 spaces in the lot corner where I parked, the furthest from the school. About 3 left when I left. Feel a bit like an intruder.

Kayaking 4:12:00 [1] 11.74 mi (21:28 / mi) +13m 21:23 / mi

Kayak on the Merrimack with Beth. We started near the State Nursery, ending at Sewall's Falls parking. Temp got to high 80s, sunny/bright. In fact, there was a lot of sun. Some welcome shade on the east-west river bends and a mild southerly breeze at times. It was great for swimming which I did only once. At times we seemed to fly over river bottom with the favorable current. Lots of sandy bottom and, in some places, very high sand bluffs (excess of 50' est.) on the outside river curves. Eventually, there were quite a few people kayaking, swimming from shore etc. But it did get quiet again after the Rt. 4 bridge. Mostly is was very bucolic and quiet. Sewall's Falls caused an increase in heart rate at the very end with shallow, fast water over rocky bottom, with many rocks at the surface.

At one point, there were some 30 cows on the river bank. There was a river-side pasture that went on for maybe 3/4ths mile. I had to stop, climb the bank and survey this animal kingdom with its shade, spaciousness and smooth, green grass.

Quite a bit of car ferrying to make it happen. A reasonable upper body workout. A good day.

Orienteering 1:01:59 [3] 2.86 mi (21:40 / mi) +71m 20:07 / mi
ahr:128 max:137

Went back to Pawtuckaway to do the brown course from two Saturdays ago again. Goal was to push harder to see what leg would do. Already knew the course but still got confused on the way to #8 by getting too far left but recovered then blew it when I could not figure out what appeared like two large boulders but mapped as a small boulder cluster. Leg was letting itself be known most of the way. Done before it got too warm.

Merrymeeting after - a quiet afternoon by the water. Swimming was fine.

Cardio 41:19 [3] 2.81 mi (14:42 / mi) +35m 14:09 / mi

SPS bike path to Turkey Pond & back along dirt road and Silk Farm. Most pleasant eve & nice to be in a refreshing environment vs, say, BHS. Worked harder to see what right leg would say and it complained. Wouldn't really allow 30 secs on, 30 off. Best mile around 12+ minutes. On the fence re entering the Boulder Dash but something says I should. Probably more walking than "running" anyway, given the complexity of map & terrain.

Cardio 5:00 [2] 0.0 mi +3m null / mi
ahr:113 max:123

Got the HRM working, a milestone...but XT had, grr, low battery which it has a way of doing after charging unless on alert for it.

Cardio 31:19 [3] 2.11 mi (14:50 / mi) +1m 14:49 / mi

BHS before 9a - gray & cool, with an easterly Jose breeze on the make - very nice. Felt good: was first thing & cool & I had time. The one 300 I did shows that's all I can do at that pace which is maybe 6:40 before right thigh calls it quits.

Walked M first, picking up a bag of trash around two benches that feature views of the track & football field. I might leave a small sign to see if behavior is indeed subject to positive influence.

Orienteering 1:21:03 [2] 2.39 mi (33:55 / mi) +52m 31:46 / mi

Orienteering at Pawtuckaway. Went back in part to go over one particular leg from the camping weekend plus other exercise stuff. Cool, gray, bit of drizzle at one point. Saw two bikers, otherwise very quiet. Wondered what I'd find re mosquitoes not having any spray. Don't believe I encountered a single one, not even near swamps. Warm enough eventually that a cotton T shirt proved too warm so I took it off. Still no bugs.

Cardio 35:52 [3] 2.22 mi (16:09 / mi) +1m 16:08 / mi

BHS track, Sunday am, still cool enough. Have not been to track since last Sunday. Letchworth weekend.

Went to Highland Games yesterday at Loon Mt. Fun enough, did get to mid-80s. There was a run-up Loon run and back twice (with a Scottish name) - only 4 starters, all in kilts. Don't know how they fared. Seemed brutal given the temperature.

Walking 1:15:25 [1] 2.45 mi (30:47 / mi) +77m 28:03 / mi

Hurricane Island walk. Had not been there in years. Last time I was running repeat loops on granite surface up to "Shoe Store" and back. SS was renovated but fitness being in disrepair, no such loop running.

Cardio 44:27 [2] 2.01 mi (22:07 / mi) +105m 19:02 / mi

5th District road area after work. Went thru the usual lovingly maintained "mystery" property then into hardwood forest, shady & cool. Strava showed West End Tr. route to my surprise. Intersected with it and some up & down on old cart track like roads & back to 5th District Rd. Looked really nice for XC skiing in most conditions.

Cardio 30:50 [3] 1.88 mi (16:24 / mi) +1m 16:22 / mi

BHS around 6:30. Cool, pleasant. Very green infield grass. Just there to get the heart rate up. Had flats on with heel inserts & right foot did not care for that solution - couldn't find the usual. This age creeping upon one calls for compromise and adjustment.

Left around 7, one HS footballer with 5 footballs, field goal practicing, passing, and running solo - there before me and after.

Orienteering 1:01:42 [3] 3.9 km (15:49 / km)

Pawtuckaway camping weekend brown, 3.5k, actual disance a guess. Forgot to bring the 310 for gpx file. Pretty easy brown except for 6 to 7, of "standard Pawtuckaway difficulty" but w/o a plethora of boulders. Blew it, too - to the tune of maybe 4'. Finally noted a sole, small, uncrossable swamp (duh kind of thing) - then contours fit and went directly to the flag,100m away. The logging, where it exists, is pretty ugly and makes for difficult footing.

Right leg just doesn't work when it comes to a steady jog, the thigh becomes weak. Jogged short bits and walked, esp 7 on the Fundy Tr. to 8 and 8 to 9. My biggest find was an iPhone 7 on the ground in the woods between the last control & finish. The owner was only 10' from me when I asked who might have lost one.

A bit confused, I e-punched at the "wrong" finish, then went to correct one when it was pointed out to me, then eventually noticed a dsq on the finish sheet and finally went back to first finish box to complete the episode, erasing the dsq - all in all, taking maybe 3-4' which I subtracted. Certainly not that 'seconds counted' anyway.

Orienteering 1:09:16 [2] 1.83 mi (37:51 / mi) +137m 30:43 / mi

O walk @ BB on a Fri pm. Sunny, pleasant.
Had a quite-the-coincidence set of encounters with a fellow in a pickup.
He turned R off 28 and immediately pulled over. I passed him. Then in a mile, I stopped at the BB entrance to put up the car top, so he passed. In about a half mile, he pulled over. I thought he was entering a picnic area but then saw he was moseying along a ways back. I turned into BBSP and drove up Podunk Rd, parking along it. He passed me going up. 75' later I returned to the car coming out of the woods & he passes with 90" of my arrival, going down. Made me wonder about coincidence.

Parked at Rob Road parking - planned to get to T jct which was appreciably farther (pleasantly, too) than I thot. Nice shady woods with shafts of sunlight.
Was not really able to run any distance tho due to right leg issue. Got to T jct, was thinking of going left and calling Beth when I got to BBR but then going right was front & center & was able to complete a loop. Had not been in these woods for quite some time. Winter of '02-3, Z&M used to run with me from one side to the other, Beth doing the ferrying.

Cardio 34:16 intensity: (30:16 @3) + (4:00 @4) 2.06 mi (16:38 / mi) +1m 16:37 / mi

BHS, rainy day but not at time of visit. Low 60s, so a nice temperature w/ singlet. 8 200s, a bit at 4 effort. Barely use 1 due to being always, somewhat at least, OOB. Got there only a little bit before school out.

Cardio 44:20 [3] 2.7 mi (16:25 / mi) +1m 16:24 / mi

@BHS Labor Day morning - gentle breeze, cool. Tried a longer venue but just plain get stuck around 300m - in fact, could not complete the first three. Right thigh becomes sl achy, then weakish, then weak so I have to stop. Did get the 4th done though, maybe by starting harder than the other three. Not particularly OOB, not on a b-blkr, so evidently circulatory insufficiency. Maybe there is a surgical sol'n in the future - or accept inevitable limitations.

Another older guy there getting going as I was leaving.

Note

Maybe slowly waking up from post-op, not really sure. Anyway, fall is always a wake up call.

This critter obligingly stayed in place while I went in the house for a camera

BHS track, Sat eve of Labor Day weekend. had the place to myself. Sunny but pleasantly dry & cool. Had Letchworth maps with me that, by chance, were on top of the map desk from putting there a long while ago w/o any specific reason. Surprised to see it was only 3 yrs ago that we were last there. Don't think so this month though.

Usual at Y. Went to BHS for the track but full of football practice. Similar across from Cilley on Mocha walk but pee-wee types.
