Track 35:00 [3] 2.0 mi (17:30 / mi)

SPS track after work - had about 40', did 200 at 7' pace and walked 100s between & then had to leave for an appointment. Time of year and day when it can be hard to get to use a track or infield due to kids about. It's their terrain.

Kayaking 3:16:07 [1] 8.5 mi (23:04 / mi) +3m 23:03 / mi

Contoocook kayak with Beth. Possibly the best kayaking experience in the local area. Not many houses at all, under only one road, lots of field and forest. Located another launch point at Bohanan Farm for a future, shorter visit. Stopped at 3 and 6.6 miles (Daisy Beach). Logged as 1 for the three plus hours of upper body work it was - stronger arms/shoulders, softer face plants. 8.5 miles per 305 but of a different persuasion.

L Achilles awareness this am, presumably from sitting to running transition yesterday. Need a second pair of running shoes.

Home from Vet's. Drove back from Rockland, got dogs & used the opportunity to get home. 80F so hot in sun but nice enough in woods. Town Pond was resplendent fall. This was after 3.75 hours of sitting in car & eventually proved a nice remedy.

Road/trail 30:54 [2] 2.0 mi (15:27 / mi) +3m 15:23 / mi

Dix Island, set out with 2 mi in mind. Great sunset and best night sky all summer. Slept poorly as did Beth. Anchor chain was scraping on rock and it sounded like thunder tho the night was as far from that as possible.

Dix sundown, Milky Way to follow

Orienteering 1:05:08 [2] 2.24 mi (29:05 / mi) +110m 25:14 / mi

Bear Brook training. Mild day. First 7 fm 2011 blue. Thick woods for most part.

Road running 29:45 [3] 3.14 mi (9:29 / mi) +16m 9:20 / mi

From Sag To Longbeach Lane & got hot enough to want to take a swim in Noyac Bay which I did. Had expected a second short run later in the day but sifting thru the past as well as socializing made it about impossible.

Drove to New London, took the Cross Sound ferry to Orient Point, then drove to Greenport to take North and South Ferries to and from Shelter Island to Sag Harbor. Met Vicky at Longbeach La. & sifted thru 35 years of father & stepmother’s past, an overwhelming, impossible chore. Vowed to clean up as we go along vs stuffing attics and basements and closets with the stuff of put-off decisions. Brought some home. Night and dinner in East Hampton with Gregg & Vicky. Visiting Jackson Pollock's studio was a high point. Dogs along & tired were they of car confinement.

Trail/road 48:21 intensity: (25:00 @1) + (23:21 @2) 3.5 mi (13:49 / mi)

Nottingcook Bog Meadow loop. Went to BHS to use the track but sports were
taking place in infield. Same at the elementary school track. So back to square one. Had not been there in perhaps a month. Seems like hunting season of some kind: two pickups, one was Got Snow.

Some colors and usual fall freshness. Junk in the usual places, too, incl. a porcelain toilet shot up into bite size pieces.

Had 3 maps: 2 were of Silvermine from a Silvermine Sweepstakes 9/14/80 & a training visit 11/20/82. What a forest - Harriman return coming up but nothing like the early days if only because years have passed with the inevitable change.

Road running 1:18:53 [3] 7.19 mi (10:58 / mi) +205m 10:05 / mi

Hopkinton loop, breezy NW day, perfect conditions, colors beginning.
Reasonable energy. Did not encounter a car til 2.1 miles and only one on first 3.9 miles which was all dirt road. Slowest I've run this per location search but second half was better. Not enough long runs these days and it seems like never enough time to get stuff done.

Orienteering 52:51 [2] 2.37 mi (22:18 / mi) +44m 21:05 / mi

Bear Brook brown course from 2011. Muggy/gloomy around 4pm when I started. Saw 3 MTBers & then had the place to myself. Could have had a better copy of the map - symbols not really clear enough but did not consider that at home. Claustrophobic canopy after wide openness of the western prairie. But some really nice open woods in the 6-11 cp section.

Stopped by to ponder the Leavitts - still as still as ever, the small plot (from 2013) maintained by someone.

There was a NEOC meet at Boojum Rock but no inclination to travel.

Orienteering 18:40 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (8:40 @2) 1.0 mi (18:40 / mi) +34m 16:53 / mi

Getting to start triangle.

Track 40:00 [3] 3.0 mi (13:20 / mi)

BHS track around 6p. Overcast, nice temp. No plan - woke up from a death nap around 4:30 so get in motion & see what comes was operative. And not much. Did 3 times one mile, walk, jog and some 4 effort as well but nothing more than a lap at any one time. OOB mostly. May be some travel lag. Legs felt ok - just the inclination to stop too soon too much of time.

Walked off the plane at 1240am, out of the airport half an hour later & to bed at 0200. Nice to be home, back under the canopy. Was getting out of car in the garage & Z&M surprised me.

Walking 41:06 [1] 2.02 mi (20:21 / mi) +56m 18:44 / mi

2 mile walk into nooks & cronies of Lava Hot Springs town. Crisp morning after yesterday's rain.

Brief visit to Temple Square and City Creek mall in SLC - both impressive
sights. Had not been in downtown Salt Lake since Dec., 2001 when I met Bruce to pick up Zoe.

Hiking 1:33:37 intensity: (30:37 @1) + (1:03:00 @3) 1.85 mi (50:37 / mi) +502m 27:27 / mi

To Mt. Glory summit from pass. It was sprinkling with some thunder & fresh wind approaching the summit with a gray menacing sky to west so spent only a few minutes atop. Too bad to get to the gateway to the high country & have to leave so soon. Sunny enough later.
7 PM

Note

Today ended another JH visit: '68 to start, '69, '73, '75 and then lose track.
Sometime in the 90s and last was 2002, too long ago! So much change tho Bruce's corner of Wilson has not changed and can't. Still the same breathtaking mountains, open skies and prairie and majestic cloud formations at times. Made a pledge to return soon. Drove over to Idaho country in intermittent rain (included big hail stones and some heart-stopping lightening bolts just out of range) to this little place, Lava Hot Springs.

Hiking 2:11:11 [1] 4.0 mi (32:48 / mi) +587m 22:32 / mi

Hike to Teton Pass with Bruce and Peggy on the old pass road out of Wilson.
Beth picked us up. Used Bruce's FR 10 given to him by Peggy awhile ago (after seeing what my 305 could do in Montana 2 years back), not used, broken band etc. Fixed the band, charged it & treated it like the 305 & it uploaded just like the 305. Nice day & hike. Beth picked us up.

Earlier, took the Tram to the top of Rendezvous Mt. Considerable OOBness given altitude, whether walking or running. Valley floor around 6000' and
often exerting at a higher altitude.

Road/trail 1:38:19 [3] 7.4 mi (13:17 / mi) +16m 13:12 / mi

From String Lake parking to Bearpaw Lake, mostly level. Walked a bit, ran a bit more. Arrived at destination for a ‘spiritual moment’ in solitude. Came upon Beth a half mile from parking.

String Lake

Camped at Gros Vent River last night, memorable for an insect invading my ear canal around 2245…a few seconds of fluttering wings every 10 or so seconds. I waxed and waned with tolerability. At one low point, I sat up in the tiny tent, accidentally compressing the panic button remote on the car keys for some 30 seconds of car alarming in the dark silence. Finally, an hour later, Beth got the critter out & I could put the experience to sleep.

Road/trail 1:04:29 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (59:29 @2) 5.69 mi (11:20 / mi) +17m 11:14 / mi

Over to the Snake levee and along it north to Rte 22. Great river and mountain views tho the levee was not the genteel path I thought it might be. Keeps the Snake floodplain from flooding and there was heavy equipment bolstering it in places. One sign warned of grizzlies but didn't take it too seriously. The cotton wood flood plain had the only potential as far as I could tell.

From the motel in West Yellowstone - Bruce pointed out presence of nearby Madison River & easy way to get to it -- and a sat view perusal got me out the door pretty quickly after having given up on idea of any run-"adventure" til later in day. Good thing I did because that was the only jog/run I had time for in the course of the day.

Saw more of Yellowstone including requisite Old Faithful. Returned thru Driggs and Victor as the sun set and over Teton Pass after dark. Back by 9pm. Maybe 375 mi driven, 2 long days, lots of vistas, rivers, volcanic curiosities and wildlife.

Cardio 12:30 [4]

Full effort at climbing the 328 stairs on Uncle Tom's trail (plus less steep switchbacks) on the south rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

Had expected some 3-4 mi jogging somewhere suitable but we were moving by car much of the day.

Drive with Bruce and Peggy to Yellowstone seeing sights unseen for many years and much more interesting than recalled.

Looking upon Yelowstone Lake

Walking 48:03 intensity: (28:03 @1) + (20:00 @2) 2.41 mi (19:56 / mi) +3m 19:52 / mi

AM walk for most part from Snipe Creek. 28F, frost. Tried to get to Snake but was foiled by private property etc. Finally found a small, winding path that took me into flood plain cottonwood forest which was open & inviting but had to save for another day.

From end of Bruce’s drive

Note

Flight to SLC via Chicago. Got up at 0300 w/o alarm for 0540 lift off. 6 hour drive to Wilson along Rt 89, very scenic much of the way. Tiring day that ended with a great cowboy concert.

Track 40:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (20:00 @3) + (5:00 @4) 3.8 mi (10:32 / mi)

SPS XC to track after work, overcast. 0.75 over & back & about 2 mi around, some 4 effort 200s. The the kids came flooding not much after I was thinking I never see kids on the SPS athletic fields.

Looked at the track records & was very surprised to see "boys" 400m record is 49.7 dating back to 1958 - almost unbelievable.

Wednesday Sep 10, 2014 #

Track 23:28 intensity: (11:55 @2) + (9:47 @3) + (1:46 @4) 3.8 km (6:11 / km)

BHS track around 6p - cool, overcast. Started a ladder at reasonable 8' pace but did not complete. Being tired from yesterday's long return home is presumptive excuse. 1155 1600m warmup. then 58, 158, 357, then bagged the idea & finished with 154, 146. Still, got heart rate up.

Had dogs, took them for a walk & then placed them comfortably behind car so thy could "spectate" which was not good enough for Mocha, in particular, so I had to turn car around so they could not see the track.

Orienteering 52:10 intensity: (40:00 @1) + (12:10 @2) 2.04 mi (25:35 / mi) +73m 23:02 / mi

Stopped at Pawtuckaway on way back from Maine with idea of going over most or all of Sunday green 2 course again. Was 5pm so a bit late and long day in returning from Rockland, too. Went to first point, found a flag, then another on the way to the second point. And, still before arriving at the second point, I found the last night marker, then a flag at the second point - so at that point, I changed plans, went back to car & proceeded to pick up at least those flags (as well as final cp). Then went to #3, retrieved that & by then needed to go to be home by 6:15. Wished I’d had more time.

So green under the Pawtuckaway canopy & so blue on Penobscot. Full moon period as well and two perfect days, weather-wise. Monday Boston Globe related significant "storm damage" in Ipswich, MA area following Saturday's weather change. Lucky at Pawtuckaway.

Orienteering 1:18:28 [3] 3.91 mi (20:04 / mi) +157m 17:50 / mi

Green today - rained and was clear & sunny by am. Botched 3 & 4 considerably. Relocated on 3 150m to SW in clearing with stone wall end. Climbing to 4, did a senior & followed reentrant before wall some 200m SW thinking I was outside wall boundaries & needed to head up the reentrant to find it. When I realized what I'd done, it was a long return trip to wall corner. Was pretty good on the rest of the course.

Attendance at these has been spotty probably due to boat stuff mostly. Reflected on what a nice weekend offer UNO provides. Drove 150 mi to Rockland after. Stopped at a DD for this AP entry & bought a vanilla bean coolata (a first) & got "cold headache" to start with & now the AC's driving me away.

Splits tomorrow, perhaps upon retuning for some hot am coffee.

Orienteering 1:35:53 [3] 4.24 mi (22:37 / mi) +107m 20:58 / mi

Camping weekend Night O. Drove over with Beth, she had dinner & went home. Then dark finally came and rain did not - a front & some sprinkles but rain held off til after 10pm. Long road run on first leg separated groups. I led the second group up to the spur on which the first point was - went the wrong way, others followed & then we all converged at the flag after turning around. Was with Jim A and Phil B for most of the first 7 points. Also Misha on & off & Ben Gallup for a few as well. When I saw the leg (& commitment) to #8, I headed off to #11 and "the barn" as it were. Did a good job with 11, lost map contact on 12 but regained when I encountered a rather large, open uncrossable marsh. 95' was plenty and had quite a few surreal moments when alone. Cozy night in the tent when the rain finally came down.

Trail/woods running 47:42 intensity: (40:42 @1) + (7:00 @2) 2.29 mi (20:50 / mi) +36m 19:52 / mi

At SPS after work - hot/muggy but ok in shade. Just a take-it-easy walk over to the newly redone all-weather track for some exercises and stretching, 2 laps around and return. Flat legs after yesterday. No compulsion to run every day & that's most likely for the best.
9 PM

Note

Kayaking on Turee Pond with Beth at sunset (having just missed a classic red descent), with this poem and its imagery in mind:

Out, out upon the smooth dark lake glides my canoe.
And the shadows from the moon,
Which chase here and there upon its placid face,
Are the only things which break
-- Save my own craft’s rippling wake --
The deep, dark color of its blue.

Soft, slow descends the veil of night,
Til the circling shore sinks in its folds.
And the star-lit sky,
And the lake, and I
Are alone with quiet, peaceful night,
Touched gently by the moon’s soft light
While stillness reigns above, behind, before.

The heavens high above the lake arch o’er my boat.
And are reflected from below so true,
They seem both o’er and under my canoe.
Each sky-dome meets the other at the lake,
And so a perfect sphere they seem to make,
And through mid-space, in solitude I float.

“Solitude”, William Dix, 1889.
(scribed 45 years ago)

It captivated me in the late 60s. It was pretty much that way this eve. Near full moon, gentle, warm breeze. No evening star for some reason yet “And now the first star is lit, and I go home” was operative. When we neared the landing, several young people were overly solicitous, presumably because of our perceived age and our coming in from the dark, that it proved a distraction.

And then I rediscovered this other moonlit episode, suitably linked as "fragile memory".

Track 11:19 intensity: (3:00 @1) + (5:19 @2) + (3:00 @3) 1.6 km (7:04 / km)

Warmup

Track 9:40 [4] 2.4 km (4:02 / km)

BHS track about 5:30pm - still a bit hot in sun, track was about 40% shade at start, 60% when I left. 3x200: 53, 48, 49 (100 between); 4x400: 97, 96, 97, 97 (200 between). One last 200 - 43 (expected 41+). Mediocre night's sleep - up at 2:45 to tend to a vomiting dog & really did not get back to sleep.

Have right ham awareness, nothing more. Never quite know whether it’s hypochondriasis or more (spring 2011 it was real). Would like a track workout every 4th running day - at least that’s the way I see it for September.

Track 20:00 [1] 1.4 mi (14:17 / mi)

Knox Road TF from Robinson Rd end. After work, had no idea where I wanted to go running but talk of gps’ing the new trails there at the recent BOS meeting plus a desire to be just about home when done made it a pleasing solution. Figured I’d go for an hour. Started with Robinson Crescent Tr., then some snow mobile/SVT stuff which took me to Boulder Tr. and White Pine Tr. jct. Then Boulder Tr. back to the power line & home on more unnamed trails. Did not see the cut-off for BBR. A lovely forest with a lot of open woods and interesting contours. Contains Bow’s biggest boulder. It needs mapping!

Kayaking 1:17:32 [1] 2.13 mi (36:24 / mi)

Kayaking (archiving mostly) with Beth at Stumpfield access in Hopkinton. Got there too late really, about 10:15 but still found some shade and/or breeze to make it quite enjoyable. Paddling in a kayak serves as bonafide salve for the majority of the day's other activity. Got far enough from Rte. 202 that it was almost inaudible. Could see there was a trail along some of the shoreline and spotted two small sandy beaches. Need to explore new places on foot more than I have been.

Spotted another blue heron looking for a snack.

5 PM

Road/trail 29:42 [2] 2.35 mi (12:38 / mi) +35m 12:05 / mi

BHS wander - had a T-shower mid-pm (dark as could be) then bright & clear & soon muggy/hot again. Think it was first day of school - fields were full of soccer-playing kids. Stopped by Turee to admire the view, thinking how nice it could be as the sun set & the first star lit, right up until the first bit of skim ice.

Road/trail 34:39 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (19:39 @2) 2.32 mi (14:56 / mi) +1m 14:55 / mi

Went over to Contoocock with Beth & Z&M to look for a place to launch a kayak on the river and visited Lehtinen park at the end of Runnels Road. Did not succeed in finding a launching site - kayak was at home anyway. Nice series of paths, some along the river with Mast Yard SF on the other bank making for an unspoiled stretch.

Along the way, picture-perfect Penacook Lake but no access permitted.
