Kayaking 37:34 [0] 1.16 mi (32:23 / mi)

Kimball Pond perimeter. Lots of water lily etc in NW reaches. Zero effort, just a record/trace. Asked a fellow to help get it off car roof. Told him I bought it yesterday as he admired its freshness. That must have been the precipitant because, as he was leaving, he gave us 4 Pilsner Lites, 1 bottled water, 6 peanut butter-filled Ritz's & 2 chocolates - the drinks on ice in a small carry along. Indeed, refreshing generosity & we'd decided to dub the kayak 'Serendipity' due to the way it was discovered yesterday on Craig's list (not to mention it was on 'bl' lane...Blueberry Lane) & then this eve's episode.

Track 17:42 [3] 2.0 mi (8:51 / mi)

Ran the last 2 miles home. Tired from yesterday but this was downhill.

Road running 1:12:44 [3] 6.96 mi (10:27 / mi) +191m 9:37 / mi

Purgatory loop abbreviated by using Montalona. Wanted something more around 5 mi but also wanted to head this direction & figured I'd rise to the 'challenge'. Legs really dead near the end. Sufficient shade & stuff to look at but can see how far I've slipped. Best days were when I worked full time (!) & got out the door regularly at noon hour & occasionally ran home. "The way out is the way through", "practice makes perfect", so need to keep plowing ahead. My good fortune is an OK msk system so far.

Note

Bought a tandem kayak today in Brookline, NH - first kayak ever. I've been wanting to get out on various local ponds/small rivers & lakes for a long time - & finally the time came. Beth & I paddled the perimeter of Turee Pond this eve. Forgot the 305 to mark the occasion.

Track 12:14 intensity: (7:00 @1) + (5:14 @2) 1.05 mi (11:39 / mi) +4m 11:31 / mi

Walk/jog mile.

Token visit to BHS track at 6:15 - still too warm for me - could have used a sun visor, too. But no DFs for certain. Best done around 0700.

Track 7:34 [3] 1.02 mi (7:23 / mi) +1m 7:22 / mi

2 halfs: 3:49, 3:45

Trail/woods running 10:06 intensity: (6:06 @3) + (4:00 @4) 1.07 mi (9:26 / mi) +1m 9:25 / mi

Two figure 8s in Nottingcook around 6:30p. Sultry & abundant DFs. Another type of w/o that bears repeating. Worked harder on second - this would be a good place for me to use the HRM.

While driving earlier today, spotted a painted turtle upside down on the road about half a mile from here. Didn’t look good - turned around...rear half was squashed. I see 2 choices: one is that a visually incompetent driver failed to distinguish & ran it over - or the other that it was run over deliberately. Either way, nothing good to say.

Road running 1:09:00 [2] 6.4 mi (10:47 / mi)

From Enterprise car rental off Rte 1 back to Ben's. Nice proceeding thru local Portsmouth & Kittery. So much that is quaint there. Mostly from 6-7pm, a good time of day - low on heat & traffic.

Route
8 AM

Walking 24:00 intensity: (9:00 @1) + (15:00 @2) 1.8 mi (13:20 / mi)

Ashore in AM at Dix. No one there. Meadows of buttercups & rosa rugosa.

Walking 40:04 [1] 1.95 mi (20:33 / mi) +62m 18:42 / mi

Burnt Island - had not been ashore in years. Made my way to lookout tower but did not climb. Path took me to water’s edge looking to Monhegan. Another quiet day in the making, morning coolness particularly nice. Hay scented ferns filling the meadows. Almost Z&M as greeting party at the beach.

Walking 1:13:04 [1] 2.85 mi (25:38 / mi) +27m 24:54 / mi

Richmond Island, Seal Cove. Took the perimeter trail - had not been ashore before. Mostly grassy, great views of the shimmering sea. Blue sky & sea & bright green vegetation predominated. Suitable sunset for the end of summer’s first day. First exercise in a few days & not much to it.

No Garmin communicattor plug-in on either computer for some baffling reason, technofusion at work for now. Time & distance close anyway. A few hours later: got it to work on the oldest computer in house....
Puzzle it out as I go along.

Walking 30:00 [1] 0.7 mi (42:50 / mi)

PM DP escape into mature Nottingcook hemlocks with their clear understory, where I sat down eventually and Z&M sat down too - vs "seeking" as Beth (vis-a-vis Temple Grandin) predicted they would.

Boat slavery is basically over - yet 6 cords of wood arrived in the drive today. What an upper body training opportunity - why am I not enthused.
Anyway, freedom is on its way.

Solstice days benign & beautiful.

Orienteering race 1:18:00 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (33:00 @2) + (30:00 @3) 4.21 mi (18:32 / mi) +131m 16:54 / mi

Exeter TF UNO local, courses by Alar, Deb H meet director. As fine a day as June can offer - sunny, dry, breezy. Had to go to IBH/Kittery early - drove right thru the map around 0645.

Left Kittery around midday in the wrong frame of mind when I could not connect the radar cable (main reason for 120 mi RT). Wondered if stopping for the meet would improve that frame of mind - on such a fine day, I would think it would.

Got most of the first 8 points ok but got really confused on #9 . It was clear that I was not focusing. Eventually did find it, but then had problems with 10 - equanimity gone, I walked in. O is always instructive: a mind, a map, a result, esteem a bit up or a bit down.

Recall my not wanting to drive to a SS race at Gt. Glen a few winters ago. Stood in the drive thinking did I really want to go.... Reckoned I would develop enthusiasm on the 2+ hr drive there. Diane passed me after the first mile, demonstrating lack of willpower, focus etc. Tony's scalp bleed gave me an exit. Today was similar. Live & learn. DNF = F.

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.7 mi (28:34 / mi)

Log a DP so as to keep track of what’s when. Boat slave but time to walk to slough as an escape. Lovely June eve - full moon last night but nowhere to be seen - two days of rain & cloud. Listened to PHC with the NZ Vodaphone cell of no use here except for radio & alarm. A “pocket” radio is a novelty for me. No turtles or anything of interest. Saw a 10” snapper about 4 days ago burying eggs but very few turtle marks in the sand at this time & no tadpoles noted this spring for some reason.

Missed out on 2 Craig's list kayaks in the past 2 weeks.

Trail/woods running 40:00 [2] 3.3 mi (12:07 / mi)

SPS wander after NHH. Cloudy, cool but nevertheless sublime June it was... spring's culmination & noted more so as time dwindles.

Thot I saw Julie Bassi but it was her daughter!

Track 33:47 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (9:11 @3) + (4:36 @4) 2.25 mi (15:01 / mi)

BHS track c. 7p, similar to yesterday. Gray, east breeze, cool enough.
No plan - jogged a 9:11 warmup. Then 6 200s: 51, 49, 48, 48, 43, 43 - 200m walk between & one lap after.

Had some energy, felt good to run a bit at speed which is essential even if not pursued. Nice to approach the start line with some mental zip, and consider getting into mid-30s for the heck of it at some later date. But that is flirting with MSK vulnerability.

Monday Jun 9, 2014 #

Track 19:45 intensity: (10:15 @2) + (9:30 @3) 2.0 mi (9:52 / mi)

Went to BHS track around 7p for token appearance & clearing the air - needed to get away but not much time. Too much distraction today with work & boat.

Jenn came by around 1am with 3 rescue puppies straight from St. Croix by carry-on (helpful people method). She drove from Burlington, Vt to Logan, meeting the plane at 11:30pm. Says these are her last rescue pups. These were feral, living outside til this change in fortune. She dropped all three off in White River Junction.

Note

This evening at Turee Pond - a reminder of a similar evening at the Oringen 2011 - although not so "exotic".
2 PM

Road/trail 55:06 intensity: (35:06 @2) + (20:00 @3) 4.62 mi (11:56 / mi) +141m 10:54 / mi

Hopkinton Village Greenway, CCW this time, start Kimball cabins. Bright, breezy, cool - very nice.

4 PM

Road/trail 43:29 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (23:29 @2) 2.85 mi (15:17 / mi) +79m 14:04 / mi

SloGo with dogs around the bog. Cool, no sun, no rain either. Z&M spent the entire day in the car awaiting their PM excursion. Looked over the various trash sites for future pickup. Boat work mentality makes for a contracted state of affairs but getting out is important.

Tuesday Jun 3, 2014 #

Road/trail 43:00 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (23:00 @2) 3.0 mi (14:20 / mi)

SPS wander, tired. Another hot day, still dry, breezy. Rain forecast for evening. 2nd annual BOS picnic ended safely before radar rain bands from the west arrived.

Note

Evening walk to the slough with Beth & Z&M. Today was a summer day, ready or not. Arrived at water's edge to hear the slap of a beaver tail. Then we noted the head & trailing V wake as the beaver swam back and forth nearby. As we departed, in the direction of the lodge, the tail slapped again, a vigorous splash...an angler's catch on a line or so it appeared.

Full moon June 13 (the "strawberry" moon according to the Farmers' Almanac). We should look for turtles laying eggs - seems to have been May or June full moon time in past.

Road running 53:54 [2] 4.78 mi (11:17 / mi) +161m 10:13 / mi

Patch-Rollins loop CCW, about 85F but dry. Abundant, maybe 80%, shade. Legs felt ok on the Rollins ups but something was missing & fell asleep as soon as I stopped car engine in garage. Stopped by the Hopkinton town beach on Kimball Pond, a nice community swimming hole tho I had no interest in a dip.
