Walking 7:10:40 intensity: (5:10:40 @1) + (1:00:00 @2) + (1:00:00 @3) 8.53 mi (50:29 / mi) +1172m 35:23 / mi

Hike in Whites with Beth & Peter. Plan was Ammonoosuc Ravine Tr to Lakes of Clouds & then see what we felt like doing. Beth was on her own on same trail. We got to LOC & decided to hike toward Washington summit for an hour but who was kidding whom - so about 2.5 hr RT from the hut. It was a gorgeous day, great fall colors and lots of people at the summit but easy to retreat from.

Had not been there for maybe 10 yrs - last with Peter Anderson for an Easter sunrise. Usual steep rocky trials. Peter & I did this 3 years go (to LOC & Monroe) - seemed harder today but rocks were wet, making it slippery in places. Beth got to LOC & went down ahead of us. She was tough on the trial! It was actually treacherous descending in places with the slippery rock. We got back to the parking lot at 6:15, Beth 15’ head of us. Nice chatting on the drive back when silence gets filled in easily. Peter drove off to Acton for a 10pm dinner & work at 0700 tomorrow. Dogs on their own for about 12 hrs.

Orienteering (Vetting) 2:45:45 [1] 3.08 mi (53:49 / mi) +85m 49:34 / mi

UNO meeting at BB as well as vetting points for first time. Quite a few of us there. Went off before meeting ended to get stuff done that pertained to my responsibility. Beat up the dogs with 5 hours of opportunity but they wouldn't have it any other way it seems. Great day, great kind of O training. Technical terrain - harder than Pawtuckaway in places, considering visibility.

Road running 48:43 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (18:43 @3) 5.0 mi (9:45 / mi) +67m 9:21 / mi

Luti loop from CHS parking around 2:45. Long time since I've done this since lunch hour runs went the way of the dinosaur. Mild fall day. Tired.
5 PM

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.7 mi (28:34 / mi)

Down to the slough, so quiet. Good for reflections until the dogs come to see what's going on.

Road running 44:23 [3] 4.38 mi (10:08 / mi) +159m 9:06 / mi

Same run as yesterday, other direction - more energy, must have gotten out of the right side of bed. CW has to be a faster direction. Another Saab parked 2 lengths ahead on a dirt road where virtually no cars park - first company I've seen in the two or so years visiting. The lady walker referred to the 2 cars as orphan cars.

Road running 47:07 intensity: (37:07 @2) + (10:00 @3) 4.42 mi (10:40 / mi) +155m 9:37 / mi

Patch-Rollins loop ccw. Lovely fall day, just the right temp. Legs flat, however - likely the weekend still but did not expect, thought a day would have done it. Better toward the end, just about all uphill, found a slow groove & plodded on.

Admired a near-perfect wood stack, contemplating the possibilities in its making. I want my wood stacks/'piles' to remain in place but don't view them as art objects. Beth & I recall many lovely 'bee hive' wood stacks in western MA when we lived there in the early 90s. One can make a stone wall or a wood stack depending on whether or not time is the stream one goes a-fishing in. Walls of cold stone last a long time, wood stacks go quickly but warm the hearth as they go.

Season of the fall of the leaf is upon us. A cricket resides in one of the plants we brought inside & sings its sad tale each eve, a requiem for the dying year.

Orienteering 1:04:52 intensity: (49:52 @2) + (15:00 @3) 5.47 km (11:51 / km) +80m 11:03 / km

UNO NOD meet, Deb Humiston's hard work. Day began grim at home with the last of heavy rain but a blue band was visible in the west on the way over & it was sunny/pleasant eventually. Helped with S/F. Did brown - had not been there in years - very technical but with its share of paths. Lots of boulders, well-mapped, good contours but still hard. Not careful enough to #2 & #7 flag was by the wrong but nearby boulder. Had quit on that one & in heading to #8, there it was.

Threw away 15' on 2 points. TP was 80' for 5.8k green so difficult O. Lots of paths but space between them (to get 'lost'). I think they are all mapped.

Not sure how many came (25?) but reminded me of all the work for no guarantees & how I think I'd do a local now expecting significant help beforehand, ie, help a future meet director. Ernst, Jim, Alar, Dean were the regulars. Tim Parson was about the first I saw (it had been so quiet while still very gray) - a MD yesterday & 'day off' today.

Orienteering race 1:24:03 [3] 9.08 km (9:16 / km) +143m 8:35 / km

NOD @Great Brook Farm SP, thanks to Tim Parson & NEOC. Lots of people there. Decent run, B+ anyway. Red was 7.1k and 21c so a bit long - scale was 1/7500. Remember the days when I hoped courses would be around 10k for a better chance at Steve Tarry.

Feet thoroughly wet on way to #3 - no way to avoid. Felt like #5 wasn't quite where it was supposed to be. Lost maybe 1' @ 12, 45" @ 18, 45" @ 19, 1.5' on way to & @ 21. Best for me around 80'. Missed splits 13, 15, 18, 19.

Marvelous coincidence: saw a fellow orienteering with four Corgis.
A form of Four-O - if there ever was one.

After drove along Curve & Fiske harking back to good old days, all ghosts today. Walked the perimeter of the Fiske property as Beth & I used to do.
The garden was overgrown, the old shed still there - neglected, half hidden by vegetation. We wrapped a VW Beetle up alongside it on an October eve in 1984 - left it there for the winter when we went away. I'm nostalgia prone, Beth very little if at all.

Stumpfield loop, CCW. Cool enough around 3p, plenty of shade. Have not done this in a long time. Haven't even run 5 mi in too long. Glad to see the barn. Felt good about doing it though. More to come.

Walking 30:00 [1] 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)

Just walking - to slough in am & along WH road with Beth & dogs in pm. We re-stained the paintball-defaced kiosk at the end of the road. Also picked up trash in the "shooting gallery" field.

2 O meets this weekend for a change. Local, too.

Trail/woods running 48:54 intensity: (4:00 @1) + (36:54 @2) + (8:00 @3) 4.0 mi (12:14 / mi)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

SPS wander late pm on a delightfully cool day. I think it was the first frost of the new season this morning. Went down the bike path, along the shore of Turkey Pond & back thru campus & XC woods. Saw lots of XC kids out.
Also one lovely image of a guy fishing on a pane of blue glass with splendid background. He was fishing from a motionless canoe (with electric motor on back) - long gray beard and hair and wide brimmed cap.

Considerable wood hauling & splitting as well.

Beth's bird feeder & bear (from a few weeks ago)

Walking 30:00 [1] 1.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Ashore Graffam I - and a trail leading away from the pier. Thought it might go around the island but it led to a small cabin by an attractive clearing & a much larger cabin at the top of a large grassy field - both not used in years. Nice place for a party. Splendid day weatherwise & Milky Way last night was well worth a ponder. Still no running inclination.

Road/trail 54:09 intensity: (44:09 @1) + (10:00 @2) 2.73 mi (19:51 / mi) +52m 18:44 / mi

Ashore Owl's Head, first time ashore tho one can drive there easily enough which is quite different. Hard rain/front last night, blue am, now mostly gray again. Roadside rills were gurgling. Not in mood for running & old NB 993s weren't either. Look-see walk - encountered general store at 0.33 mi & no $ for coffee!

pm - ashore at High Island. Huge cut granite stones, monoliths. Found the main quarry a short way back in thick woods - yet passable in many places & occ carpeted with soft green grass. Spooky place, granite ghosts & cellar holes of long-ago laborers.

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.7 mi (28:34 / mi)

Trophic entry. DP in AM, went out again around 5:30, very dark & the heavens opened. The dogs grimaced as the hit the ground & wanted back in the car. That is showing age. Was a Y day that didn't happen.

Road/trail 30:00 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (15:00 @2) 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

BHS around 4:30p, a dumb time considering it was c. 90F here today but at least I stayed to the shade. Had dogs along for the walk part. Beth is in CA (said it was 98F in Cleveland yesterday at the airport) and Z&M waited all day long in the drive for their PM entitlement. What I really wanted to do was launch a canoe or kayak & paddle on Turee Pond.

Note

Quoted $879 to fix the MacBookPro - not worth that considering its 3 yrs age & fact that it already has hx on record - previous logic board failure. Think I'll put some good $ after bad (<$300), get it repaired in NYC as before & have insurance pay for a new one. This way I get another not-too-expensive shot at what's on it.

Computers, computers - a sat view of a military installation could look something like this

Yesterday: the small sign says Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway (view looking N). Beth & I were "determined" to do this, first in May when energy was afresh, then in August when it was warm, black flies were gone & we had time. Now it's September and I can only point out what we failed to do. Views to east and south were largely flat, what one expects from a monadnock. To the east, the far horizon was nearly level and gray enough to be mistaken for the sea.

Walked to the slough this eve & spotted this guy returning. Haven't seen much of interest this summer: the large snapper much earlier & the one-time "Breakfast at Tiffany's" display on the exact right dewey morning. Wonder what the spiders do with the rest of their time.

Hiking 3:16:42 [1] 3.85 mi (51:05 / mi) +553m 35:20 / mi

Monadnock hike with Peter, using Marlboro Trail from the end of Shaker Farm Rd. A little used trail, we saw no one until near the summit. By the time we left, there must have been 50 hikers at the top. There was a large group from Kimball-Union. Could see Boston and Mt. Washington. Peter figured he'd hiked this mountain 50 times in the past three years. It was sunny with a westerly breeze.

For posterity

Orienteering race 51:45 [3] 4.52 km (11:27 / km) +83m 10:29 / km

Pawtuckaway Camping Weekend, brown. Nice day, NW breezy, dry. Opted for brown - glad I did. Legs were dead much of the time. B+ run, one c. 3' error, rest was clean enough. Maybe best for me would have been 47'. Forgot a clue sheet which was a bit distracting.

Very nice weekend. Usually make only part of these or not at all, boat stuff competing. Lots of time to visit with friends. Nice Saturday dinner. Steve Tarry came today & it was nice to catchup with him & his SO Betsy. Helped with the cleaning up after, thinking how long I've known these club mates!

Orienteering race 1:17:29 [3] 6.2 km (12:30 / km) +102m 11:33 / km

Green, Pawtuckaway meet. I'd give this a B/B-. 14c, spiked 11, lost maybe 5' at #11, 7-9' mistakes total. It was on the warm side, was beat on the run in thru woods. Leaving #5, noted a NTO guy (50ish) who came from nowhere & moving faster. He passed at arm's length. I looked at him to comment. Much to my surprise, it was Peter Anderson - not seen for years! We traded the lead on & off, he faster & I more accurate. He disappeared for good half way to #9. #11 was easy - knew where I was halfway there - about 150m from the flag. Woods were white, contours so so - lost contact & had to go quite a ways back when circling failed - eg, 150m. Was about half way down results list but first of the old guys. Joe B 53+, Peter 62+. Best for me might have been 67-8'.
8 PM

Orienteering race 1:34:50 [3] 6.54 km (14:31 / km) +170m 12:50 / km

WHNO, Pawtuckaway. WHNO - a good run but had competent company the entire time. Light rain started just before start but nothing that ever distracted. For #1, just follow the trail of bobbing lanterns. Jim, Alar & JJ were closeby runners I recognized. Alex J went cruising by. From 2 thru the end, Alar & I were in tandem, more like rogaine partners...sharing looms & trading ideas. On the way to three, we crossed an uncrossable pond (knee deep - old rendition perhaps), thinking we were farther to the east. On the other side, contours didn't make sense but Alar figured out where we were at the path & the climb to 3 was ok. Reflectors were always hung high. Just short of #6, we saw a light crossing in front. It was Jim Arsenault - we fell into a threesome. Group security in the sense of better idea of locale traded for "this is the way I'd go". At 6 (c. 60'), I knew I was headed for the barn. 7-10 loop appeared to be another 3k. Jim & Alar agreed. So we went to 10. Jim sighted a critical stone wall after a lot of just plain going E w/o much feedback. We picked up Aims Cooney just short of #11. To #12, I was more inclined to follow the string of marshes but went along with going straight - contours were harder to read than the marshes. Went over a ridge, started heading down. Alar indicated we should angle back up that ridge - the flag was on knoll at the end. Ran in together. Got home around 10:45. No camping - was on call & need to visit NHH Sat & Sun am. Nice course by Ernst. No computer-enabled QR.

Trail/woods running 30:00 [2] 2.5 mi (12:00 / mi)

Knox Road TF with Zoe. Went to HS but there was a soccer game going on - par for the course now.

Camping weekend tomorrow. Don't believe there will be a night O. Should be good O anyway.

Cleaned out more forgotten papers in the study. One 3 ring binder was entries for the '09 BG. Beth was the registrar. Who's who of orienteers show up on the start line for these. Found $2 cash Beth had stashed along with BP's entry (presumably owed him) - no show, finder's keepers:).

Trail/woods running 48:00 [2] 4.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

SPS, along bike path, Turkey Pond shore, back thru SPS. Fall in the air.

Trail/woods running 35:00 [2] 2.5 mi (14:00 / mi)

With Z&M at end of day - short walk/jog off trail. Lots of medium green - white pines filling in with a vengeance. Found a hunter stand with accompanying Stealth Cam. Lots of moose poop around. Came home after the run to hear what sounded like a woodpecker pecking on the side of the garage. But no bird in sight - sounds were upstairs, inside behind stuff - could not see the culprit tho the noise making cont'd.

Beth spent some 20' observing a bear raid her bird feeder today, making off with it. She took quite a few pics but most are not in clear focus. I'll post one when I have wifi.

Trail/woods running 36:16 [2] 3.2 mi (11:20 / mi)

SloGo with dogs, Bog Meadow loop around 4:30. Ovcst all day, cool enough. Nice to have woods to myself.

Laptop quit today, a day after power surge...tho it was not connected to a power source. Hard to second guess. Had a 'record' so to speak of having a rebuilt logic board - yet it was working fine til electronic hell broke loose nearby. Pleased to have the desktop working. If not a miracle, then inexplicable. Lots of photos to rescue.

BHS track, get out of house after too much straightening up. . Overcast, still, not too hot around 6p. 9;43, 7:48. 48, 44, 43 & done.

Road running 37:32 intensity: (22:32 @2) + (15:00 @3) 4.0 mi (9:23 / mi) +52m 9:01 / mi

To Merrymeeting Lake for a visit & swim after working up a head of 'steam' on another humid day. Had 4 mi in mind, no more. 305 hiccupped, evidently as I was tucking my singlet into my running shorts - enough pressure on "start/stop" to turn it off until discovered. Nothing like being able to run right into the lake at the end. A beach is indeed a desirable finish for a summer running race on a hot day.

9 PM

Note

Tremendous explosion at the far end of the house around 9p - had been thundery but not so much lightning as to consider notable. A bolt evidently hit very near the house with simultaneous explosion & power outage by traveling thru the perimeter wire into the study where the transformer was. Made my way toward the study, which was pretty much filled with electrical smoke and seemed to be increasing. I genuinely feared seeing flames leap from a wall somewhere. Called 911 which is something I'm so disinclined to do. FD arrived about 10' later. A surge protector & the dog perimeter fence transformer had exploded, parts flying, cracking a nearby window and shattering glass covering pictures, scorching the wall and 2 nearby electrical outlets. Needed Unitl & an electrician to check yesterday am. Not too much not working now but a computer and printer are casulties - no surprise as they were adjacent to the fire works.
