Walking 18:00 [1] 0.7 mi (25:42 / mi)

AM DP, cold & overcast. Down to the slough - a layer of ice, maybe 1/2" by shoreline. Dogs running hither & yon, noses to the ground.

Road/trail 51:00 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (36:00 @2) 4.0 mi (12:45 / mi)
shoes: Loco training

SPS wander to boathouse & along shore of Turee. Last day of threadbare November, the "dark month." Warm enough, mixed footing & mixed mood, resulting in the occasional walk to see more.

Monday Nov 29, 2010 #

Road running 49:08 [3] 5.42 mi (9:04 / mi)
shoes: Loco training

Basic Luti, CW. Blue dome perfection, decent energy. Loco shoes which are
on the old/wild side, flimsy-appearing but quite comfortable.

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.7 mi (28:34 / mi)

AM DP, a dusting of snow. GOT SNOW, the non-stop* hunter, there so went to the Arena, stayed in open so as to avoid Confrontation. Banished a mouse to Siberia enroute. Legs feel fine, like 10 mi could be done again today. Often, revelation to the contrary sets in as soon as some relatively small # of strides are taken.

Dunbarton Black Brook loop - wanted "adventure" so this fit the bill. Dunbarton is largely a 'woods town'. Many nice views of fields, patches of wood, walls, water etc. Drew a blank several times - had to look carefully at the intersection and think...which way. Near end, made a left expecting to see car...not there so that was true confusion, needed that left and another right and another 0.7 mi. Hit 'stop' vs 'lap' & did not record a half mile or so. Wearing tights makes for more work lifting knees (than there already is....) - bunching the material around the knees makes for a few minutes of "free & easy." Last I did this was the first day of spring! and some 7' faster. Indeed, hunker down time has arrived. Realized I gave it a name last March: Black Brook loop.

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.7 mi (28:34 / mi)

PM DP with Zoe at BHS, Turee Pond looking very nice. Today was two days in one - the first rainy/dreary & the second bright & blue. Finished "The Lotus Eaters" in the first & picked up sticks for part of the second. Aaron & Leah came by & stacked 1.5 cords of wood, saving me exertion....

Weightexercise workout 30:00 [1]

Took two O maps: APOC'02 & a DVOA (11/03/01) to pass time while doing lower extremity work - an interesting diversion. Gave a homeless man (standing by the non-stop shoppers) $2 in exiting, one of many things learned from Beth.

Thanksgiving Day
A SloGo around Bog Meadow. 31F feels cold when winter is coming. Was not in a hurry to get out of car with its good heater & heated seats - had a cold start to the day. Pest factor had risen to 0.7 or so, so little choice. Saw a woman with 4 or 5 Goldens and ice on ponds. Not much else.

Paused to recall some other T-day runs. One early '90's running up to top of Graylock & down on the road, maybe 11mi. Found one from '77 in a log that says 4.5mi around/near Weston-Ash street reservoir, one from '78 (77'/10mi) in Concord with names like Strawberry Hill, Lowell, Pope, Spencer Brook, West. Fall of '79 around same time began mapping at Upton. Found a letter Beth sent to me in Sweden at the '83 Oringen, addressed to RML, H35...was not deliverable tho' address appeared creditable but did make it back home and unread for many years until today. No 5k in Burlington this year - can't say I miss it.

Walking 21:00 [1] 0.8 mi (26:16 / mi)

Windy AM DP, blew the moon right across the sky. Went up the spur where the dogs discovered the fawn last spring. I could see Zoe remembered.
Went from darkish woods to bright sun filtering thru by the PL.

A walk before work, not bad...a favorite spur nearby

Up-spur

Down-spur

Note

No run, windy & had an errand and it's time to be able to say "No". Had some spare time this PM, tried the Scottish O site in going down a list of saved web sites. It was not blocked to my surprise - even more so when Route Gadget opened maps from the 2010 Scottish Champs. That is not supposed to happen.

Walking 18:00 [1] 0.6 mi (29:59 / mi)

AM PM, earlier than usual. Tree cutters coming to fill drive with "stuff."

They came & now no internet or phone. Comcast & Fairpoint did not show up so the cutters cut the wires....

BHT insight etc will have to wait its turn, I suppose. Interesting to see ads on AP. Got a new library card while sitting, replacing the one in the long-lost, never-heard-from wallet.

Orienteering race 2:44:38 [3] 10.93 mi (15:04 / mi) +552m 13:01 / mi
ahr:156 max:157 shoes: Avant O

38th BHT, nice drive to & from with Jim Arsenault. Sunny but cold. Standing around waiting to get going...a deja vu. Not much in the way of mistake time but not the total time I'd like to see. Not sure why, possibly hamstring stuff that's quiet in the backroom. Saw a lot of Dave Yee, Phil Bricker & later Bob Dangel. Phil was hustling & straight at that! Must have been holding his compass with more concentration. Most everyone ran by #1. No misses on the east map. To #15, lost maybe a minute - path no longer readily visible? so retreated & went way that Phil & Alex Jospe had gone. #22 was a previous control & recalled the way by what I could see from the trail. Only real miss was #24 when Bob & Phil were too far left; control was hidden in green & hard to imagine a rock face on such a gentle slope. Went out of the way to be certain. Challenging course that went on & on. Not particularly beat up though: nothing a long, hot shower and 800 mg Motrin can't fix. Interesting and creative map print/fold. Nice shirts & day! and via Boston for contrasts.

Wood hauling/stacking 1:00 [1] 0.75 mi (1:20 / mi)

More brush hauling than I'd planned but when Alan came by & pointed out that the chipper could not get across the bridge & I knew I was not really caring to pay for brush hauling time, I took up the chore & a chore brush hauling is. What's good for GWB must be good for me.

Walking 18:00 [1] 0.4 mi (44:59 / mi)

PM DP with Beth, a Sat pm social. Moon was just coming up. Thought it might have been the Wolf moon but that is January & this is the Beaver moon per Farmer's Almanac. Very nice. And Beth had her camera. Also encountered 6 young people, virtually unheard of other than related to O activities and some fairly long ago Boy Scout encounters.

Walking 19:00 [1] 0.9 mi (21:07 / mi)

AM DP featuring cold hands & frost. Down to slough, reflections almost immediately destroyed by ripples, the dogs' signature. Not the life of May and June: ant mounds, turtle tracks etc. Just hard ground. Back in sun at the edge of the PL.
12 PM

Track 4:00 [4] 0.51 mi (7:50 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

SPS track for more experiment. Was cloud-covered, 41F on car thermometer & a NW breeze which made it quite non-motivational. Did two of these & not the 3x8' miles I had intended. Even fingers were cold, wind chill adding to "screw this." Shows uniform pace after jump start & that I ran more or less on/around the track when in fact I ran in lane #1.

Track 3:59 [4] 0.51 mi (7:48 / mi) +3m 7:40 / mi

Ditto, learning curve...

Track 15:01 [2] 1.31 mi (11:28 / mi) +1m 11:26 / mi
shoes: New Balance 1011

Bit of an aimless wander after. Outlined the right hand field quite well. Hiccough in the already slow pace when the cell rang maybe 3 times, unusual/unexpected & did not bother to investigate.

1 PM

Road running 49:56 [3] 5.18 mi (9:38 / mi) +66m 9:16 / mi

Noon, basic Luti, NW wind seemed a bit much at first but not an issue. A Go Slo w/o Diane & another look at GPS positioning. Had my excursions into the fields right on, occ off the road I was running on but is the road in the right place? Seems like it should be ok for mapping trails, walls etc....

Forgot running shoes so went home at lunch hour - sunny, hi 50s. Dogs roll their eyes: "Yeah, don't expect us to believe you've come home for good."

SPS XC after work, legs tired, interested in seeing FR route which appears to be very close. Got my running on the central path including the slight diversion, as it should. Yet mile markers not right. Forgot to walk around the car at the end for more input.

Recall my amazement with a DeLorme Blue logger around '06 - cart track with big puddle, went one side going, the other returning & it showed the 10' diversion as well as 'lollipopping' a boulder maybe 5m from the trail. I was most impressed with that utility in putting paths and boulders in their place....

AM DP, came to pass when the hot water wasn't hot so shower postponed - out the door with a mission. Stillness abounded.

Power line morning

Weightexercise workout 30:00 [1]

Gym - seems an excessive amount of time devoted to body stuff for the day (85') but certainly weights are essential, esp 'love' the leg exercising, more than placebo for cranky hamstrings.

Road running 53:19 intensity: (33:19 @3) + (20:00 @4) 6.04 mi (8:50 / mi) +138m 8:15 / mi

Fisk-Little Pond, CCW, good temp, good energy for some reason, in part
because Big Brother was looking over me (ie, 305 from the sky). I've called
this 6.3, FR was 6.02 &g-maps was 6.12 as carefully as I could measure. Occ
wonder about the pace it tells me I'm running - I feel I can tell an 8'
mile pace from 400s at the track - it might say 8:24, then 8:11 & next glance 8:38, all the while I feel I'm moving at the same rate (and all w/in 30"). Impressed with the climb # as that's what I've been using - so maybe this thing really does know what's it's doing.

Weightexercise workout 15:00 [1]

Not much in a frame of mind for running. Short DP at BMS this am. Drove over to PL Arena & did stretches & sit-ups (for the ice cream) under a wide open sky - not much of it in this corner of Bow. GOT SNOW was there - no dogs but I was wearing a light brown top & olive green pile pants & a 'white tail' ? on top. Kept near the car anyway. Another mild day.

Orienteering race 1:03:42 [3] 4.9 km (13:00 / km)
shoes: Teva

UNO club champs/meeting at Beaver Brook. Gem of a day, near 60F, sun, not a cloud. Ridge Road approach & farms, gardens, walls etc are lovely. About a B- run on Green. The technical part has gotten harder perhaps-the white pine etc has grown in more, contours, while good, are very hard to see thru the dense trees. On way to #1, took the first left turn, asleep at the wheel - ran down it for a while, realized what I'd done, had to regroup, probably threw away 45" on an easy leg. Lost maybe 6' on #4 (10:18 for leg); Ernst on red, same leg, was 19:54 - once out of map contact, it was near impossible to regain w/o a drastic, time-eating measure. Blew 4&5, not smart/good on #9 as well (Ernst pointed out what the blind man failed to see). Green was fine, not tempted to do red & 63' proved enough. Finishing running SW on a fall pm can be blinding! Nice courses by Alar who also became club president. Planning on an USOC A meet in conjunction w/ BD in October - S/M/L, I volunteered to design middle. Need more field work, Alar's chore. Fine day!

Walking 15:00 [1] 0.4 mi (37:29 / mi)

Frosty AM DP, Got Snow's truck was there so felt constricted & was glad to get dogs back in car.

Walking 18:00 [1] 0.4 mi (44:59 / mi)

PM DP as the most mellow of days died. Upper Gate to PL where I sat down on a grassy knoll & tried to take a brief nap but ground wasn't right & dogs pestered.
In returning, both take off after some unseen mystery, solved with a blood-curdling scream from what turned out to be a good-natured woman walking her 2 small dachsunds in her own back yard. No harm done but she thought "it was a bear" - not sure why.

A run was entirely unnecessary today after yesterday's prolonged affair and UNO meet tomorrow.

Bare, mundane PL at the end of a November day & week

Road/trail 1:57:38 [2] 9.1 mi (12:56 / mi)
shoes: NB 993

Bow wander, longer than I planned on. Thought how I'd not done same in quite some time at last night's BOS mtg so headed out door with woods loop in mind. To Old Johnson Rd, saw first of about 6 hunters, a father and maybe 12y/o son (lagging behind) on BBR. Into Knox forest where I tried some boundary stewardship work but when the blazes became hard to find (walking/looking/retracing), I set off for an attractive hill, visible from quite a distance in the open woods (beech). Found a yellow blaze trail that went everywhere & nowhere - did not know where I was for maybe 45', then spotted a biggish cart track, figured I'd probably been on it in some time past. Still nothing identifiable. Wandered around on bigger paths, confused by newish logging trails, finally it was familiar & came out on Logging Hill at Bow school forest entrance, then 2 mi home on BBR. Warm, lovely day. Much in need of something cold/sweet like a Coke.

NH erudition (worth reading the wanted ad on the back)

Note

Had hoped to run but time ran out. Went to Dedham, Ma to work on car with Jeff Saeger - PCV (crankcase vent) update/DIY solution that Jeff had pointed out to me. We were able to do almost all of it, the oil trap being barely accessible on this model Saab. Was there a few years ago with a Volvo when we did some brake work. Had hoped to take a jog with Jeff & Samantha but had to get home for a 7p meeting & traffic would have made that a real rush job.

I was sitting in Jeff's kitchen when he spoke of taking December off from running as a mental break which gave me pause, why not take today off, time ran away anyway...

Walking 18:30 [1] 0.9 mi (20:34 / mi)

AM DP, to slough & back. Quite bit of of activity on PL, power company type, trucks & men assembling.

Road running 1:01:00 [3] 6.3 mi (9:41 / mi) +120m 9:08 / mi
shoes: New Balance 1011

Fisk-Little Pond CW, wanna-be drizzle. Had 305 & missed first 5' due to
confusion. CW, high point is 4 mi in - ie, 4 mi hill climb, so CW probably is slower. Sore left heel sought ice & motrin to keep under wraps. Road feels so hard! Over an hour, nothing to write home about.

Walking 15:00 [1] 0.4 mi (37:29 / mi)

PM DP, last of these, will put on Beth's honeydew list when she comes back from CA this eve. Across from the fire station, new field/woods...returning from town from a 4p appointment I could not find! Bought Neoplitan ice cream at Bow mobil &, having been deprived, ate too much.

Monday Nov 8, 2010 #

Walking 16:00 [1] 0.5 mi (31:59 / mi)

AM DP, didn't know I'd wake up to such nastiness. Drove into the woods. Near-horizontal rain in the open, looked like blowing smoke.

Trail/woods running 35:00 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (20:00 @2) 2.5 mi (14:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

PM DP, MSO at noon, didn't get outside tho it had dried out by then & would have been ok. Slightest sliver of a new moon in a clearing sky. In the open at first but then got tempted to enter the woods on a loop not visited since the spring & then continued a perimeter. Was tempted to cut across (300m) for fun & games. Heard a gun shot 5' later & it appeared to be within the perimeter so better I had not! No bright colors but it was getting dark for good visibility anyway. No parked pickup as warning but some evidently just walk out the door.

Reading re DVOA A meet causes a twinge of regret for not having been there but energy for same, ie travel, was nowhere to be found.

Walking 15:00 [1] 0.4 mi (37:29 / mi)

AM DP, GOT SNOW out & about so went up to Abby La. Zoe had breakfast in bed & needed help standing - once up & out, she was fine (at nine+).

Wood hauling/stacking 1:30:00 [1]

Good portion of day spent splitting/hauling wood - neighbor helped the first hour. I'll call it 90' - it was honest! Now I have to haul a load into the house for a fire....

Hard labor

a taste of it anyway, from dawn to dusk type of thing, day after day, what a whimp I'd make (easier to keep out of trouble)

Last load from some 50 yards away, needed picking up, heaving over splitter & last log of day was too big anyway

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.6 mi (33:19 / mi)

PM DP, dogs not to be denied of food or play, they're very persuasive. Fun game of hide & seek in thick white pine.

Completely overlooked today's NYC marathon. Couldn't fail to note that it was dark not much after 4:30.

Event: Hickory Run

Orienteering 1:59:00 [2] 8.4 km (14:10 / km) +100m 13:22 / km

Baldwin Hill to brighten up the weekend, make up for not going to DVOA.
2.75 hours RT driving 120mi, about 2.5 in woods. Started gray, shafts of sun later. Walked/jogged, went straight many times. Stopped watch & saved splits so was slow to depart control sites for most part. Once, got mixed up, stopped watch, was standing on knoll with bldr on SW side - it took more than a minute to find it! But no point in running on at such a place with the expectation of relocating - unless a wall was encountered which occ helped & took the wind out of some of route choice difficulty. Without walls this would almost always be difficult. More green than mapped, too. Blue goes on & on...climb is a guess.

Dogs held up - couldn't leave them home but was aware 8k/2+ hours was a stretch. They were having fun right to the end. Zoe could barely walk once home. Gave them Remadyl right after finishing. Right hamstring was throbbing much of the time on the way home (not on the course), feels fine enough now - peculiar stuff.

A day well spent...well, there's the stuff that didn't get done here. Neighbor went out & obtained a log splitter for me for tomorrow (no trailer hitch). Photos at Hickory Run look colder than my day.

Entered splits - maybe they'll show up. Oops, found them at 24 October....

Default colors were brown and green, so blue with a wisp of white was refreshing

Road/trail 18:00 intensity: (9:00 @1) + (9:00 @2) 1.0 mi (18:00 / mi)

AM DP drear, rain & dark. Some jogging, long day in the house. Virtually no weekday hunting that I can tell.

Road running 54:21 [2] 5.33 mi (10:12 / mi)
shoes: NB 993

Noon, thought it would be raw but was mild & brightening. Eventually hot - running tights on as well which, when across knee, are an impediment. Had 2003 Letchworth Genessee Fall festival green course for 15' distraction. 450 miles to meet site, energy there then.

Felt a bit guilty re not going to DVOA meet but too much work: airport, flight, car rental, motel reservation, drive to motel, to meet etc & reverse Sunday pm. Did a DVOA replica last December. Think I'll drive to Baldwin Hill tomorrow to make up for it.

Walking 12:00 [1] 0.3 mi (39:59 / mi)

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.9 mi (22:14 / mi)

Frosty AM DP, gloves & cap. Nice reflections on the water at the slough. Mocha played hard to rein in, no treat.

Road/trail 54:57 [2] 5.0 mi (10:59 / mi)
shoes: NB 993

Across Fruit, Memorial field into woods, by homeless shelter (did not peek in this passing by) & corn-stubbled fields to SPS brook, goal to cross but not narrow enough anywhere or with a fallen tree for help. Along the stream in little-used woods. Then spotted a fence atop an embankment, a playing field recognized - was not 200m fm SPS track (ran a lap, reflected upon times of more energy) so considered the road-avoidance, burr-laden adventure successful.

Walking 18:00 [1] 0.7 mi (25:42 / mi)

PM DP as the sun dipped into stillness. Mocha again off into something, no treat times two.

FR 305 came knocking at door. As did Allan MacAllister to talk about removing trees that might very well cause headaches, possibly heartache, as they (mostly tall pines in soft, moist soil due to the brook) threaten house/boat.

Weights at PF!! Full circle - PF, Golds, Racquet Club, PF. Nothing of the kind since March > overdue. PF is a large gym on the far side of the unappealing Concord "traffic axis". Easy enough parking on Tuesday, so maybe a Tu-Thurs plan.

Stopped to vote on the way home - a stuffed parking lot but invisible people...departed in about 5'. Fun to have a glimpse (at least) of fellow Bow people - such glimpses were reserved for the "garbage dump" visits of some years ago.

shoes: New Balance 1011

Fisk loop CCW, nippy (under 50F), breezy NW. Stiff &/or tired legs mindset.
Last 9/22, 54.50. Watched with interest as 60' passed w/o being there...

Beth planted the last of 350 bulbs, mostly daffodils implying spring is inevitable.... Nothing is inevitable, chance reigns.

Faraway series, photos from elsewhere, #39

Early autumn grape arbor, Liberty Corner, September, 1968, a photo I chose to accompany Keat's "Ode to Autumn", written out some forty years ago
