mapping 40:00 [1] 1.0 mi (40:01 / mi)

DP/map work for last time in that particular area. Been there 4x, now certainly know what it looks like.

Road running 59:29 [3] 6.9 mi (8:37 / mi) +130m 8:09 / mi
shoes: New Balance 992

Ran home fm work, really tired, a chore. Warmish.

Wednesday Apr 29, 2009 #

Road running 41:11 [3] 4.4 mi (9:22 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

Watertower loop, made it to tower & into woods briefly. Was planning on running with Diane but got delayed. Legs felt good for a change. Good temp.

Trail/woods running 14:06 [4] 2.1 mi (6:43 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

SPS XC route after work. Had Mocha with me after pet therapy. Wanted something with a bit of discomfort. Mocha way ahead w/ first few splits, eventually closer, wondering what all the huffing & puffing was about
& really more interested in going home for dinner.

mapping 25:00 [2] 1.0 mi (25:00 / mi)

AM dog pacification as well as check possible BG route. No work as eye is too inflammed for my presence but works OK otherwise....

Dog pacification & curves...

mapping 1:40:00 intensity: (30:00 @1) + (40:00 @2) + (30:00 @3) *** 4.0 mi (25:00 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

PM jpg/map/route check for some BG legs. Temp nr 90F but seemed ok with singlet. Did the 3 legs that are characterized as green on the upcoming course. I seem to go right to the control...but have distinct deja vu....

Came upon a control fm last November...oops again...

mapping 55:00 [1] 1.0 mi (55:01 / mi)

Setup 3 BG controls, nice fast start to race. Lots of punches. Poked eye yesterday pm & now in need of attention.

Orienteering race 51:03 [4] 4.9 km (10:25 / km) +190m 8:44 / km
spiked:18/20c shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Sunday CSU A meet. Hot again. Another MP! A banner performance for the weekend. Navigated fm 6 to 9, never noticing 7 & 8. Accurate, maybe a minute of mistake, hesitation/confusion. Was pleased enough but as I walked back with map in hand, my route went fm 6 to 9, no way could I see a path I'd taken to 7 etc! Distance/climb are estimates. Very technical terrain, good map, quite the challenge. Extremely hard to see courses. Glen referred to it as 'dark on dark'. I made a point of being careful but perhaps senility reared its head in some fashion, forgetting that 7 was the goal when 9 was right there in front of me.

Controls well placed, had to be right there. Nice meet by CSU. Good to see some old friends, eg, Charlows*, Hans B. Interesting neighborhoods around the HS. Lots of blossoms.

*Gloria reminded that punch cards show missed controls, usually not an issue unless courses cross. However, epunch is hard to beat in most other ways.

#6 lower left, came fm open reentrant 100m SW (rte fm #5) & returned that way to next control...down the reentrant, right on the larger path & used immediate jct for AP for #9 & off to 10, oblivious:)...

mapping 1:30:00 [1] 2.0 mi (45:00 / mi)

Went out on Nottingcook looking over control sites & making map changes. Quite the contrast, no company but dogs & black flies.

Decidious in Nottingcook, not alot...(half-expected the blk flies to show up in the photo)...

Orienteering race 1:02:55 [4] 6.1 km (10:19 / km) +170m 9:03 / km
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

CSU A meet at Pine Hill. Temp was in mid-80's (heard 95F around 4:30 pm in Nashua). Green had 19 controls (6.1k) in sl more than a sq k, extremely trail-dense, area. Tried to scan into OCAD for area measurement but couldn't get it to work. Turned map over, took some 10-12 seconds to find the first control - said 1/16, ie, using same site twice but had not been prepared for this. Just plain missed #10, ie, did not see...went fm 9 to 11. Left 4/12 on the lefthand line which took me away fm the optimal route to 13. Just plain fumbled 15 for maybe 4'. When I left 1/16, followed the incorrect line/route for maybe 125m before realizing what I was doing. Haven't dealt with butterfly-type control sits in quite some time. Then ran right by the last control, not realizing until the final chute - it had the potential for being a tad confusing - that added some 250m. The MP was a surprise until I looked at the map. 2 weekends in a row...not bad....

Finish/staging at bottom of IS 93 ramp...

Start with 1/16, confusing for me at beginning as well as leaving 16...

Leaving 4/12, followed left line, finding myself in pkg lot w/ a hill to climb...

mapping 50:00 [1] 1.8 mi (27:47 / mi)

AM look-see at BG fork - some lt green, good now, still expect it to be reasonable by the 10th. Anyway, appropriate feedback fm map. Nice day beginning.

mapping 1:10:00 [1] 2.2 mi (31:49 / mi)

Over to Crescent Lane around 5:30, finished trails. 3rd house. Smaller trails, leaf-covered, little used, basically indistinct.

Thursday Apr 23, 2009 #

mapping 45:00 [1] 1.5 mi (30:00 / mi)

Bright, clear. Some control sites w/ internal deliberations re feasibility, usu thick hemlock & what that does to basemap contours.

Trail/woods running 29:32 [4] 4.2 mi (7:02 / mi)
shoes: Loco training

2 SPS XC for new season: 14:52 & 14:40, trail bit wet, good cool temp.

mapping 1:00:00 [1] 1.8 mi (33:20 / mi)

Delineated Woodbury logging, one new ride, downgraded some trails, put in a drive, bemoaned loss of lovely woods.

Wednesday Apr 22, 2009 #

Mapping/fieldwork/meet prep 25:00 [1] 1.0 mi (25:00 / mi)
shoes: Loco training

3 BG streamers w/ Z&M. Did not have full map - forgot, so went to what I recalled as designated features & was correct. Misty, warm, good earth fragrance.

Road running 53:46 [3] 6.11 mi (8:48 / mi) +120m 8:18 / mi
shoes: Loco training

Long Pond/Fisk for first time in a while. G maps showed 6.1+ - interesting how answers pop up (to nearest 1000ths, tho not shown). Still tired, poor sleeping - good for perspective though that I got in a little extra distance at noon hour.

Tuesday Apr 21, 2009 #

Mapping/fieldwork/meet prep 25:00 [1] 0.8 mi (31:16 / mi)

BG control site visits, drippy forest but made me feel better than, say, the morning's news. Wet at noon, thought I might check trails after work but pouring. Picked Beth up fm knee cartilage surgery.

Monday Apr 20, 2009 #

Orienteering 25:00 [1] 0.6 mi (41:39 / mi)

2 BG control sites in am, cold, cold hands. Not hard to spot patches of snow.

Road running 58:47 [4] 6.9 mi (8:31 / mi) +130m 8:03 / mi
shoes: Loco training

Run home fm NHH - headwind, chilly/gray. Legs not bad considering. Feet held up well over weekend. Watched Boston marathon at noon.

Sunday Apr 19, 2009 #

Orienteering race 57:09 [4] *** 6.0 km (9:32 / km) +190m 8:13 / km
spiked:13/18c shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Long. Guess this performance rates a B. Slept poorly, not enthused about 0801 start (but did not do anything about it!). Sitting in front of Barth Hall fm 07-0719 wanting to go bk to tent for 2 hr nap when I decided I really did want to have some coffee in Highland Falls! That was galvanizing...Dunkin D & bk by 0745, right to bottom of hill below start. Lots of early activity w/ high school kids.

Clean to 6, then distracted planning 8 & lost way too much time on a trivial leg. Generally ok until last section where I fumbled 3 points, partic 16 - was on compass to where it should be, noted a control to left on knoll & took a sideline for a perusal as if that were a sensible thing to do. Ran thru green briars on way to 17, twice was looking for rock face when descrip said bare rock which proved confusing, surprising as that may seem. On 17, I'm looking for control at top of knoll vs where it was, tucked some 20m away. Finished w/ scratched up thighs which appeared to make a scene. Can recall stopping at a stream in QOC land to wash away 'damage' before appearing at finish but failed to do so yesterday. Left before results posted.

There was a 46+, Tim 54+, George 56+

Another nice spectating finish for interscholastics..

Buckner memorial with Inspiration Point on Popolopen in background...

Cadets did an excellent job, a big order w/ Interscholastics. Nice maps & venues, namely Trophy Point & ski lodge. With Sandhurst military exercises, camping was mediocre. Missed being by the shores of the lake, been going there long enough for possibly a trace of geologic change. I may pay more attn to start times in future. 355 mi home fm Liberty Corner.

Orienteering race 15:58 [5] 2.18 km (7:19 / km) +75m 6:15 / km
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Sprint @ WP, Trophy Point, dramatic setting. Sloppy, couldn't find start triangle, did not have separate control descriptions & unfolded map twice, ran to one control to check code when I knew better, wanted bldgs to be black vs grey which caused some long seconds as well. Nice course with 3 sections: woods, bldgs/stairs & open, flat, grassy running. Lots of Cadet campus activity on a spring Saturday.

Sprint S/F venue, Trophy Point...

Orienteering 31:09 [4] 3.25 km (9:35 / km) +95m 8:22 / km
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Afternoon middle at Victor Constant ski area, new place right ouside gate.
Good run except MP at #5. Must have drifted left, came down over what looked just like rockface (but was mapped as stony ground or BF), did not ck code & cont'd, unaware. Points were not much more than 50m apart. Was unaware for some hours - as at a Troll Cup maybe 5 yrs ago. Need to be deliberate re code checking! Lost some seconds navigating to 10 before 9 but caught it before costly. Best 30+, Jeff 31:14, PG 33+.

Was done w/ sprint around 1035, not recovered until 11 or so & had to be ready for noonish middle which was unappealing, esp as the long hike to start revealed itself. First control...down into green & incredible rockiness & second up, up.... Nice finish at the ski slope lodge.

Ski area lodge/finish/awards/dinner venue...

Road/trail 30:00 [2] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi) +120m 12:39 / mi
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Incl sprint prep at 4ish effort & 25' climb to middle start.

mapping 20:00 [1] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

3 BG control sites w/ dogs in am.

West Point in pm: 285 mi, 5hr, 40' via Rt 9, 91, Ma Pike, TSP, 84W to Rt 9 to 402/Garrison, 9W/BMB.

mapping 30:00 [1] 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

More trail checking, just about done. Did one old logging/cart track - from sz of saplings growing between ruts & protected-fm-wx locale, such ruts indeed have a long life.

Trail/woods running 34:12 [2] 2.75 mi (12:26 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Noon to top of Fisk Hill to see nice new view to SW towards St. Pauls. Open woods but cut up by logging trails for making the view!

Road running 59:24 intensity: (30:00 @3) + (29:24 @4) 6.9 mi (8:37 / mi) +130m 8:08 / mi
shoes: New Balance 1011

Home fm work, tired, kept under an hour. Need some rest for wkend. Ran w/ CNYO O map.

Wednesday Apr 15, 2009 #

mapping 45:00 [1] 1.5 mi (30:00 / mi)

AM checking some control sites - when one doesn't need map to find, one needs input from someone who does. Nippy, cold fingers. Fairly open pine woods to start with, seems like nice variety to the BG course - but am I objective....Damn! keep forgetting streamers so as not to revisit so soon.

Track 7:49 [3] 1.6 km (4:53 / km)
shoes: New Balance 1011

SPS track, warmup

Track 13:52 [4] 3.2 km (4:20 / km)
shoes: New Balance 1011

2 metric miles: 7:00, even splits & 6:52, bit of work but necessary work hardening.

mapping 1:00:00 [1] 1.7 mi (35:18 / mi)

Back to Peasley La area, walked a few legs, greenish, subtle contours but good vis at control sites.

"The Estates at Peasley Hill" the sign says, suburbia trumps bucolia...

Tuesday Apr 14, 2009 #

mapping 40:00 [2] 2.5 mi (16:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

More trail assessment w/ dogs. Nippy, slanting shafts of yellow lighting the forest. One indistinct, still present, w/ one small gap to delete.

Road/trail 50:47 [2] 4.7 mi (10:48 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Over to Fisk Hill at noon, middle portion an adventure with new trails, nice forest, open fields, a glimpse at some (obscene) manses & to & from on Pleasant St. Legs quite tired.

mapping 1:15:00 [1] 2.0 mi (37:30 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Came home & went straight to Peasley Hill. More field work if there are to be controls in this area. Parts were fine, others too thick. Generally fun putting pieces of puzzle together - one old ride on the base that was once a telephone line, now barely visible, proved most helpful with location in the subtle terrain with thickish vegetation. Very lovely moment at the end of the lane, warm, still, bird songs - 3 new houses for company, empty - some 30 lots on the lane...sad, sad. A once quiet cart track eaten up by asphalt.

Monday Apr 13, 2009 #

Road running 56:52 [4] 6.9 mi (8:15 / mi) +130m 7:47 / mi
shoes: New Balance 1011

MSO at noon. Just the run home, good energy & temp, bit of a tailwind. Had WP map to keep me company.

Sunday Apr 12, 2009 #

mapping 1:10:00 [2] 4.5 mi (15:33 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

More trail review, some small trails now are indistinct...little use & fresh out of winter. Windy, cold fingers, March-like. Should have had camera.

Weekend flower, walking iris, one bloom in 24 hrs and gone...

mapping 1:35:00 [1] 3.5 mi (27:08 / mi)

After dinner w/ Pete & Mel. Swanson woods, found a 9000 Saab sedan, good body, inspection 8/04, boat next to it...2 man-made objects making this particular control site a gift. Mostly trail adjustment. Pretty views fm heights of power line.

Saturday Apr 11, 2009 #

mapping 1:45:00 [1] 2.0 mi (52:30 / mi)

Different logged area: Jordan/Whiting owner/logger, leaving expired permit on tree. Noted how surprisingly few trees were removed along some rides, not worth the mess per me....

mapping 1:45:00 [2] 5.0 mi (21:00 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Second visit to view trails/rides, walk/jog. Visited Ken Swanson for permission for several possible controls across the powerline. Nice guy, logs his woods like they're his which they are versus what I've been seeing elsewhere, lives in a Deliverance set-up...you think of it, it is in the yard.

Friday Apr 10, 2009 #

Trail/woods running 45:39 [2] 4.2 mi (10:52 / mi)
shoes: Loco training

SPS XC w/ Diane, 2 slow laps, nice to be there, still a bit wet/soft, even some ice/snow in a few places.

mapping 50:00 [1] 1.0 mi (50:01 / mi)

Finished locating the perimeter of the logging carnage.

Thursday Apr 9, 2009 #

Track 3:45 [3] 0.5 mi (7:30 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

CHS track at noon, warm up for intended 2 1600's.

Track 7:10 [4] 1.6 km (4:29 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

7:10 mi, had intended 2 but got to talking.

Road running 7:00 [3] 0.75 mi (9:20 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

To & fm track.

Road running 57:26 [4] 6.9 mi (8:19 / mi) +130m 7:52 / mi
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Run home fm work. T shirt, shorts; energy ok in spite of various. Bit better than Tu....restrain fm racing myself.....

Wednesday Apr 8, 2009 #

Road running 44:30 [2] 4.1 mi (10:51 / mi)
shoes: Loco training

Raw wx, at noon, Water Tower w/ Diane. Can now run about anywhere, making it more interesting. Essentially a rest day.

Mapping/fieldwork/meet prep 1:00:00 [1]

Spent an hour re mapping one of the Nottingcook logged areas; was a lovely, intricate area of forest, private land. Much no longer really useable for O so time was spent formulating that opinion & noting things I'd mapped. Reminded how much work mapping can be - back & forth occ, trying to pinpoint certain features. Dogs were ecstatic & too muddy for inside - fortunate to have deepish brook in front of house for rinse.

How some logging looks...

Long time mending...river of Styx...

Tuesday Apr 7, 2009 #

Road running 41:34 [2] 3.9 mi (10:40 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

Noon, nice time chatting w/ Diane, setting the work place straight.

Road running 57:44 [4] 6.9 mi (8:22 / mi) +130m 7:54 / mi
shoes: New Balance 992

Run home, better energy. Wearing tights costs a few %. Not sure how I ran this 3' faster last year...must have been optimal wx, energy & motivation.

Monday Apr 6, 2009 #

Note

Cold, biting rain. Should have forced myself out at lunch but did not - poor sleep, later about impossible...except almost ran over 4 CHS track girls running...no hats, gloves, drenched in sweatshirts & one a short while later in tee shirt...true wet grit.

Sunday Apr 5, 2009 #

Orienteering race 45:16 [3] *** 4.9 km (9:14 / km)
spiked:11/11c shoes: Brooks Cascadia

NEOC local at Estabrook. Bright, breezy. Goal was to not miss, legs tired fm yesterday. More swamps than mapped or overflowing mapped sz. Negotiated some 50 m in water a bit above knees in places on way to #9. More green than mapped; many approaches obscured by unmapped green - new growth white pine. Mag north lines not dark enough.
Today's map/course/route:

A visit to past as I used to live on edge of the forest - 25+ years ago...change but most recognizable. First ski night O around '82. Beth & I, once anyway, slept in snowy, winter woods here w/o tent, under low-hanging pine boughs.

April view, Great Brook SP, Carlisle...another old friend for running as well as O...

Saturday Apr 4, 2009 #

Road running 10:00 [3] 1.3 mi (7:42 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Warmup for 5k

Road running race 22:54 [5] 3.1 mi (7:23 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

SEA 5K, second one, 25" faster last yr. Windy, chilly but still was one 50+y/o who stood waiting for 10', ran & stood around after for another easy 15' ...shirtless. 7:10, 7:32, 7:27, :44. Looked at watch at just 4'+, thinking this is beginning to hurt but felt better approaching halfway. Mary Gosling ran by, just as last yr. NHH team of Diane, Eugene, Chrissy, me & another person known to Diane who added 6:55 pace to results - left before team results. Such races are episodes in 'running honesty' & perhaps get 'easier' with practice. Fastest mile before today was 7:24 on only recent snow-free track, so I shouldn't be too hard on myself.

Friday Apr 3, 2009 #

Note

No run day - lousy, spitting rain at noon - 5k tomorrow so seemed reasonable to bag it. Also, noted O meet at Estabrook Sunday which may be dry, so the weekend has some promise. Came home, short nap for second day in a row...

Thursday Apr 2, 2009 #

Road running 41:00 [2] 3.8 mi (10:47 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

SloGo with Diane - tee shirt/shorts - tired feeling but maybe partly due to under achieving. Came home desperate for nap around 5pm - did so & off to CYC dinner in Henniker at Beckett's.

Wednesday Apr 1, 2009 #

Alpine 41:00 [2] 4.1 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

Nice noon jog w/ Diane, water tower loop w/o tower. Seemed a bit chilly - that's what change of mentality fm winter to spring can do.

Road running 59:09 [3] 6.9 mi (8:34 / mi) +130m 8:06 / mi
shoes: New Balance 992

Run home fm work - overcast, low 40's, first half w/o much effort/inspiration, second part better. Left MTP sore fm weekend running, mostly climbing on steep spurs. Running home leads to virtuous thoughts.... On mend fm ice cream behaviour of past 3 nights...11mi calorie burning is repairative.
