Road running 43:00 [3] 4.1 mi (10:29 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Noon, bit of drizzle sent Diane scurrying. Slow, heel better, ran w/ O maps fm weekend.

Monday Sep 29, 2008 #

Trail/woods running 32:00 [1] 2.0 mi (16:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

After work w/ dogs, more for them, over to bog. Rt heel not interested in much of anything. Wearing O shoes was definitely the wrong choice.

Orienteering race 1:15:54 [4] *** 6.8 km (11:10 / km) +110m 10:20 / km
spiked:12/18c shoes: Avant O

NAOC classic finals at Klondike SF, a bit disappointed, sloppy in places. Heel sore before start, thought about running bk to car to put higher lift under it but did not - it did not like the run so was less aggressive than I might have been. Chose to wear proper O shoes as trail shoes were sodden & heavy - O shoes proved to be less forgiving on heel. Saw alot of Tim P & fair am't of Walter S early, prob more distraction than help. One control missed w/o good solution & lucked upon control. Another a straight 150 to a knoll in good vis & was 50m off. 2nd M60, 9th I recall among 50-55-60, Gagarin 64+ & Glen 67+, would have been pleased w/ 68-71'. Tour de force performance by CNYO.

Well-attended meet, parking at Hidden Acres...

...another run in the forest without me...

Orienteering race 43:59 [4] 4.1 km (10:44 / km) +98m 9:35 / km
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Middle distance, good run, esp considering rain. Was a time when I would've quit mentally before I started in such conditions. Ever so wet standing around waiting for start. Complex terrain at salmon hatchery, couldn't afford to lose contact. 2nd M60, PG 41+, Jeff S 43+, 4th in 50-55-60. Event coincided with salmon run, men everywhere fishing, must have been some women, too...

MD finish...tight quarters...

Orienteering race 12:50 [5] *** 1.8 km (7:08 / km) +50m 6:16 / km
spiked:11/11c shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Prelim of NAOC's at Green Lakes SP, clean run, no misses, spotty rain.
Spent night @ Hidden Valley after trying hard to stay in a motel, went all way to Oswego (36 mi detour salvaged by good dinner at Ruby Tuesday's), everything full, finally arrived at campgnd, no rain & good facilities, glad to be there.

Orienteering race 14:59 [5] *** 2.3 km (6:31 / km)
spiked:16/16c shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Sprint finals, also clean, one hard control but got it w/o losing any time.
First M60 ahead of PG, happens every decade or so.

Sprint final start...

Note

Drive to Syracuse w/ Beth & dogs. NIght at motel in Bennington ($70, too much), took dogs for walk just down the hill fm Robert Frost grave which I finally located after some 10 yrs or more of passing by & saying I'd do so someday (maybe 6 mos ago).

Road running 57:45 [3] 6.9 mi (8:22 / mi) +130m 7:54 / mi
shoes: New Balance 992

Home fm work, cool; goal under an hour. Caution left thigh. Went fine, no residue fm yest, 57:45, gave away 15" in last 2 splits.

Fueling before romp...

Trail/woods running 17:18 [3] 2.1 mi (8:14 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

Went to SPS at noon, cool, cooler in woods. Wanted 2 under 15' but after 45" had sharp pain, left thigh, so stopped, then started again slowly which was ok. Can't trust Monday, esp after long car trips/sitting & different exercise & touch of boat life debauchery. Recall similar last fall when I lost nearly a month due to muscle pull in similar situation, same place.

Trail/woods running 14:07 [4] 2.1 mi (6:43 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

So after jog & nothing seemingly amiss, stated out more sprightly & ran 2rd best of this sort (13:56, 14:11). In spite of Monday, legs felt up to task. Low-grade burning ant left thigh over the pm, or maybe largely hypochondriasis.

Road/trail 1:28:00 [2] 5.5 mi (16:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Ran over to Head Harbor & then Goat/Cliff & Duck Hbr trails, over Duck Hbr mt...granite, shale, sea & forest. Reminded me of Pacific Northwest, Olympic NP experience. A few challenging places on Duck Mt trail, wouldn't want to have to take grandma. Two days of nice weather.

Road/trail 44:11 [3] 4.7 mi (9:24 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

noon, lovely cool, 5th district, met Don of Rossview Farm & that was a bit still cooler chat...private property-type conversation...but not non-negotiable.

Road running 51:50 [3] 5.8 mi (8:56 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

Charles River basin - visit to Steve Goodman, drive to Camb, park on Mem'l Dr., Museum of Science Br to BU bridge loop as in yrs past, first fm early 70's. Countless runners, too many pesky bikers fm behind w/o any warning of overtaking, sunlit river w/ boats racing, animation everywhere. Crossed on RR bridge nr BU as that bridge was closed & was irritated w/ lack of info avail. - lkiely a fineable activity that made me wary. No foot complaints. Dinner at Bombay India nr choice Winthrop St (European-like outside dining) & pk.

Sauntered along w/ Diane, no hurry, sore rt heel fm not using heel cushion yest & not icing.

Orienteering 45:00 [2] 3.0 km (15:00 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

at N'cook w/ map & compass going thru O motions which haven't been enough. Dogs loved the off-trail aspect. Heel did not like any of it.

Trail/woods running 28:34 [4] 4.2 mi (6:48 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

post wk, SPS XC, cool, perfect. Legs felt good, surprising since still recovering fm 2 poor nights sleep & Mon am drive & wine debauchery last eve. No goal but 14:39 was encouraging & first 3 or so splits on second were near best that I could recall so finished up w/ a bit of effort: 13:56 (down fm 14:11), PR, first under 14'. 5' between, considered just running right into second which is next up. Saw Dave Audet again on Silk Farm Rd. He pointed out there's a track gp at Concord HS track Tu eves.

Trail/woods running 34:51 [2] 3.3 mi (10:34 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Nottingcook w/ dogs, dog-tired after long day fm boat to work to woods, lg contrast fm wind & water to tranquility of forest on soft late-summer day.

Sunday Sep 14, 2008 #

Road running 1:12:26 [3] 7.3 mi (9:55 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

fm boat at Perry Creek, Vinylhaven. Moderate rain, private property fringing shoreline, still no second thoughts. Made way to road & saw 3 cars whole time. Was evident that it was windy. Felt like aftermath of Sept storm which it was not. Always a nice & important contrast to sitting around which boatlife can be, esp in inclement wx.

Perry Creek contemplation...rain/private/run ashore...

Saturday Sep 13, 2008 #

Note

Drive to Maine & then slow go to Perry Ck, made it a 7.5 hr journey so inertia set in re running.

Running race 22:04 [5] 5.0 km (4:25 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Friendly Kitchen 5k, learned of it yesterday - at NHTI. Started 5pm, became moderate rain, low 60's. All on grass & gravel path. Course changed because Obama & troops were there! Also, some soccer games, alot going on. And I wondered if all those people with umbrellas were standing there waiting for runners to pass by:) Had no idea of course as it was changed at last minute. Did not know where mile markers were (& whether they pertained to this version 5k), no one there calling off. At 06:35, ran by a sign that said one mi, that had to be it. Finally saw 2 mi sign, 13:43, never saw 3 mi, finish 22:04. Had cap, removed around 2 mi, was too hot but last part it was hard to see, removed glasses 4-5 times. Last stretch, had them off & ran about 30 deg off course for 100m or so before figuring out that was nonproductive, lost about 15". Was hurting in that last mi. Best sol'n is to do more of them perhaps. A bit behind the 8 ball w/ the rain/vision & finish issues. Met up w/ David Audette again, first on Silk Farm about 11 yrs ago.

Saw below on dog watch this am, came back a short while later, as it was vanishing.

Road/trail 50:57 [3] 4.9 mi (10:24 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Noon run w/ Diane, nice, cool wx. 5th district rd loop, ccw. Circled bk a few times vs waiting. Bugs largely gone.

Noon, off to 5th district loop...

Rural run...

5th district loop

Trail/woods running 17:15 [4] 2.2 mi (7:50 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

w/ Z&M on loop outbk, neat little loop so conveniently close & gives dogs what they need vs my stopping at track. 8:51, 8:24.

Tuesday Sep 9, 2008 #

Road running 58:09 [3] *** 6.0 mi (9:42 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Had planned to run at noon but raining hard. Drove Liz Meadow to Garry's & ran home fm there. Had '06 NAOC's middle & long maps for entertainment. Alot of detail inside many circles. Escarpment terrain, recall a control on an ancient pc of limestone seabottom/'boulder'. Reliving mistakes and otherwise as I ran.

Orienteering 45:00 [4] *** 4.6 km (9:47 / km) +145m 8:27 / km
spiked:9/11c shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Sunday, became sunny, peasant, dry. Good run except for 9, lost maybe 2' not relocating the first trime off east end of grn marsh just to north, had to go bk to same place. On 8, went to a distracting, unmapped boulder just before, a little lower. #10 was on an unmapped boulder, a bit to the NE, cost 45". George Walker 52, Carl C & Tony F 54-5.

Orienteering race 1:25:55 [4] *** 6.0 km (14:19 / km) +225m 12:04 / km
spiked:13/15c shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Sat of UNO camping. Ran red, haven't done red in many yrs. 85' at Pawtuckaway beats up the lower extremities, mild reinjury of lft 1st mtp, had me limping for more than 5'. Good run, missed one control by 30" and the other, in the most difficult area, by some 4-4.5, finally ran to a big opening, open marsh to the east & was able to relocate easily fm there. Saw alot of a duo, thought they were adventure racers but Ian Finlayson & wife someone suggested. Caught up to them halfway to 6 but never could stay ahead; they finally passed on way to last control. Heard alot of conversation in the woods, couldn't escape! Was planning on night O but deluge was coming, eyeglass nightmare, foot sore not in need of being beaten up so soon, not much future in the eve at rainy Pawtuckaway, so drove the 35' home...pouring outside.... Now ice to the sore spots.

Erin Nielson 70, PG 78, some Kemps low 80's, Ernst 97, Charlie, Phil somewhat after.

Trail/woods running 32:10 [2] 2.2 mi (14:37 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

pre-work w/ Z&M, not much of this considering usual msk early day issues.

Green arcade in the still-cool morning...

Road running 42:22 [3] 4.7 mi (9:01 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Noon, solo, about 90 deg, 90% in shade, Fifth District Rd run, very nice. Surprised a surveyor on a cart track, making a survey for a McMansion, believe I heard.

Thursday Sep 4, 2008 #

Trail/woods running 51:00 [3] 5.0 mi (10:12 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Noon at SPS, solo, 90 deg in sun so managed mostly shade, paths,
ran along Turkey Pond, been awhile, saw a guy long-swimming there. Wish I
could rid myself of the phobia preventing same. G maps called this 5 in 51', slow paths by pond.

Wednesday Sep 3, 2008 #

Road running 36:58 [3] 3.85 mi (9:36 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

Ran with Diane around the block.

Track 5:11 [4] 1.2 km (4:19 / km)
shoes: New Balance 992

went to BHS with better plan but legs felt yesterday's long run & ran 3:27 & said not a mile & then a 400 & said not even a half & packed up. A bit later than usual so more shade, hot on one side, cool on the other. At least the mistaken Kiwi low-cal pear drink got used up.

Another 800 'loosening up.'

Tuesday Sep 2, 2008 #

Road/trail 2:07:00 [3] 8.5 mi (14:56 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Ashore again same place...Bowditch to Long Pond, made my way around north end of Long Pond & long way back on road, by Head & Duck harbors. Guess on the distance, will have to refine as able. Road/cart track around 9 per/mi & trails and going north of pond more like 15'/mi.

Long Pond, Isle au haut, looking south...
