Trail/woods running 41:23 [3] 4.2 mi (9:51 / mi)

Trail/woods running 31:13 [3] 5.2 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: New Balance 1011

w/ Z&M in Nottingcook just as rain started - dark, dark, FDF's. Had more exalted plans but woke up on Orr's I, 140 mi home, then hospital, then up to Merrymeeting Lake for another 95 mi, 5:30 by then. All in all, glad to get a run in. Missed Jim A's sprints at Ahern as well.

Trail/woods running 52:50 [3] 5.8 mi (9:07 / mi) +170m 8:21 / mi
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Came home fm work, avoided dogs & ran local loop (Allen, BBR, WHR,Allen), long time since. Deer flies & humidity were tough going in Nottingcook portion, had cap --- l remembered. Had planned to run home but temp mid-80's & other issues. Found dead snake, ? milk snake, not apparent what killed it. I thought it was alive for some # of seconds. Attractive markings.

Trail/woods running 14:51 [4] 2.0 mi (7:25 / mi)

Trail/woods running 16:57 [3] 1.8 mi (9:25 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Jog on SPS trails after, no one to come along. Diane won't run in rain during work day.

Trail/woods running 29:55 [4] 4.0 mi (7:29 / mi)

SPS XC x 2 at noon by myself. Nice day but felt hot in sun when there. Legs tired or forgot about turning over. Can see the difference now that O season motivation is past. Also, carried cell/beeper, thought I'd need to ans page. Did not have water, either - lessons that should have been learned by now. Rt heel complaining alot after; need more elevation.

Road running 48:54 [3] 5.3 mi (9:14 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Noon by myself, felt noncompliant about noon mtg & was glad to be on my own. On the hot side in cotton T shirt. Lots of rain today but none as I ran.

Summary of Spring Season

Began w/ Tucson meet 2/23-4: mountain foothills, cold nights, midday heat. Bad second control 1st day, then good day 2 & sprint.

Snowgaine w/ Charlie Leonard 3/1-2. Lots of snow & beauty. 405 mi drive home beginning at 5pm Sunday.

ROC at Letchworth, Sat 4/19 - good middle distance & sprint.

May 3-4 at West Point: good runs: sprint, middle, classic.

Memorial Day weekend 5/24-6, at Lehigh U & Hickory Run SP: good runs

Rogaine at Allegheny SP w/ Sharon Crawford - great experience, needed more pts. Not finding one of them cost alot.

Orienteering long 23:32:00 [2] 45.0 km (31:23 / km) +6200m 18:35 / km
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

US Champs rogaine, Allegheny SP w/ Sharon Crawford.
2nd mixed vets to Smiths. Some 45k, 6200' climbing.
Should have done better; some complicated compilation of considerations as explanation. Sharon has done some 20 rogaines, this, my second, ? last as too much beating up upon the musculoskeletal system, save some for future use perhaps. Functioned well as team. Good nav discussions/agreement I'd say. We both were guilty of faulty thinking on one night control, fixating on disappearance of stream at reentrant bottom when we were looking for a spur further up reentrant. Didn't need a stream to find control & we were surely in the correct reentrant as entrance was short dist fm rd & culvert. This caused loss of 2 control points & less-than-optimal route to next.

I carried too much wgt. MSK system held up but I was very careful not to fall/hurt feet. Rt achilles fine day after, also left 1st MTP ok. Lft upper hamstring pull re-exacerbated but prob not a problem. Would do well to discuss experience w/ partner over a cup of coffee after good night's sleep. Was away to Pittsburgh 90' post-finishing. Risky driving, a few momentary lapses of att'n, crossed some painted lines...

Night O is novel, fireflies, night revelry persons on road section, AM birdsongs lovely, fatigue awful but temporary. Carried a lot of food, added to wgt. Like idea of travelling very light, making more use of water stops & possibly hash house. I carried too much baggage. 2 women got 1300 pts in 12 hrs - flexible, mobile, young. Weather always different, changing considerations re what to carry. Very wet w/ one downpour in mid-pm that was depressing. Clothes should have been in plastic bag - there were plenty of extra lg map cases at HH. We never dried out. Competition was somewhat a disappointment (when I absorbed results/did the numbers) but great experience incl visiting cousin in Pittsburgh.

Road running 30:00 [3] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Around Lynn's Fox Chapel neighborhood - brick studies in upper middle class conformity.

Wednesday Jun 11, 2008 #

Trail/woods running 31:00 [3] 3.15 mi (9:51 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

Jogged the SPS 5k course w/ David & Diane. Will be an incentive to run a bit harder for set distance on nice course in future.

To Pittsburgh tomorrow for weekend ROC rogaine in Allegheny SP. Wonder how much of a musculoskeletal meltdown I will experience. Plan to shop for 'attractive food' near meet site. Recall that Charlie & I made it ot the hash house late ? 2300 quite beat in May, '04. No idea as of yet whether or not we'll include HH in our plan - I'd like to.

Trail/woods running 29:27 [4] 4.2 mi (7:01 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

at SPS after work, 92-3deg. Turned out alot better than I thought it would. 2 x 400 'warmup' on track in sun then onto trail which is mostly in shade. Hopped in stream after for maybe 5' which really was pleasant. Walked across football fld w/ gentle breeze & actually felt cool. Felt good about this workout given mindset at start. Could do this at noon at this temp & survive.

Trail/woods running 27:58 [3] 3.15 mi (8:53 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

After work in Nottingcook, loop I did before WMOC '06, not much since. Bloody hot, little energy - heat (90deg) plus yesterday's 'hike'. Dipped in the dog's pool. Left them home as it would have put them over the edge.

Orienteering 3:05:00 [1] 9.0 km (20:33 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Rogaine practice at Bear Brook. Could only last 3 hrs (scary perhaps)...shady however hot (near 90 by end), buggy, generally thick woods. Used 1979 local meet map, did not need to use USGS, it was hard enough w/ leaf cover. Twice came bk to Bear Hill Pond which dogs appreciated...pretty scene w/ light S'ly breeze. Saw a zillion ants atop Bear Brook Hill. Found some new paths, marvelled at boulder field on slope of bear Hill. Wondered how we found controls there bk 9/30/79, 9.7k course done in 95' by PG, some DNF's. Came home, took a nap.

Trail/woods running 10:08 [3] 1.1 mi (9:13 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Only reason to enter is for notekeeping - very hot & humid. Painted deck on boat, too late, sweating buckets so stopped. By time I went for run (post nap), I felt very loggy. Did one loop in Nottingcook w/ dogs & called it quits, being about 4:15 & supposed to be in Goffstown by 5. Also, planning on 4 hrs rogaine walk tomorrow at Bear Brook.

Friday Jun 6, 2008 #

Trail/woods running 34:02 [3] 3.4 mi (10:01 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

Out back w/ overjoyed Z&M. Rainy period, other things to do at lunch hour - drove home, did some boat stuff for l(a)unch. Came home post work, promptly fell asleep for needed nap...all the stuff on my mind last night...got up, put too much on...to ward off 'cold' as well as mosquitos. Promptly got warm & eventually looked around to appreciate green mansions in June.

Thursday Jun 5, 2008 #

Road running 39:00 [3] 3.9 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

noon w/ Diane, bit short perhaps, needed to be bk in case of the Luckoor-med stat debacle.

Wednesday Jun 4, 2008 #

Trail/woods running 29:51 [3] 4.2 mi (7:06 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

2XC loops at St. Pauls, light rain. No Diane today...'hair would get frizzy.' 1st 15:12 (C) was first over 15' but 'ease into it'. Second felt OK, 14:39 (NC) a bit of breathing at end. 5' rest between.

Tuesday Jun 3, 2008 #

Road running 57:52 [3] 6.9 mi (8:23 / mi) +130m 7:55 / mi
shoes: New Balance 992

from NHH home, felt hot, maybe 80 in town, 72 here, humid. Not really tired, not energetic. Had fanny pack on waist, could lb make a difference?:) Strange screen, no black bkgnd, tiny box for this writing. Will omit splits.

Monday Jun 2, 2008 #

Trail/woods running 53:00 [3] 4.8 mi (11:02 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 992

Mix of paved, grass & paths west on Pleasant, thru SPS, east on Clinton w/ D&D. Felt pretty good. Slow going in woods, a bit due to Diane's timidness. She also ran Pack Manadnock 10 miler yest. Poor Pooka passed on to the great beyond today, vet came to house.

Trail/woods running 20:00 [3] 1.8 mi (11:07 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

AM w/ Beetle, Z&M in Nottingcook; Jenn & kids here for a night thus the extra dog. Sore early in AM. Zoe passed up a painted turtle, last spring she would have chomped on it.

Trail/woods running 35:00 [3] 3.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1011

PM in Nottingcook w/ Z&M, former pestered me all day. Less sore than am, no surprise. Did not get very far into forest in May - mostly runs at work or something else. Took a look at the bog this eve, all in the height of green & bugness.
