Skate skiing 27:00 [3] 3.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Skate at turkey River - about 4:45, around 43F. Crust was very nice. Can really feel diff between parts of track in remaining sun vs those that have been shaded for an hour or more.
12 PM

Road running 35:48 intensity: (15:48 @2) + (20:00 @3) 3.82 mi (9:22 / mi) +36m 9:06 / mi
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

First noon hour run from work in quite some time. Much appreciated - nice out. Breaks up day. Will do more. Used to be more efficient re this when there 5 days a week & midday run was mandatory. Spring-like. Found HRM about a week ago - missing for months. Need some "dead" reckoning.

a tranquil world unto itself - bought this in '69-'71 period in Hong Kong. For forty years, its static beauty has been admired when eyes rest on it. Virtually nothing has changed..a few leaves fallen's about all.

Birthday sort of day, home around 4:45 & out to dinner kind of thing. Had thought of Y but why bother. Was getting to late to be serious.

Skate skiing 40:00 intensity: (20:00 @2) + (20:00 @3) 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Turkey River trails, about 11:30, 39F, OK surface, had been groomed but was getting soft.
4 PM

Classic skiing 42:44 intensity: (20:00 @2) + (22:44 @3) 3.27 mi (13:04 / mi) +105m 11:53 / mi

End of day classic on SM trails. Got out door about 4:15, thinking Twist Hill crossing as a SM access/start point - where I'd pondered for years a SM trail departing a field into "mysterious" woods beyond. Didn't see it at first but then a sign & telltale notched roadside snow bank. Parking was nearby. First 0.9 mi was new woods.Track was soft, slushy. Then the PL & Nottingcook map. Stopped at the highest point on the PL - looking back to S. Bow Rd, I could hear then see 2 SMs - they seemed pretty far away but maybe 2' later, they passed in a rush of whining noise. PL trail was on the steep side in a few places - also narrow & surface was concave when narrow...hard for snow plow or other braking. Did some serious pole dragging. On 2 occasions the trail went somewhat steeply right to the road. Met Tareah Gray & her 2 children on Abbey. Saw 6 or 7 deer run right in front of me on Allen on the way to Twist Hill. Beth picked me up at the brush dump entrance & we drove back to my car.

Skate skiing 28:00 [2] 1.6 mi (17:30 / mi)

Skate ski pm - tried anyway. Too wet/soft for any fun to the glide. Was 35F or more most of day. All the already-wet snow dropped a few inches in height. Branches laced with "ermine" last night & in the still, still morning - gone by noon.

Best sighting today was a chipmunk evidently living in the house - came out, ran a bit along a 3' snow pile but I could not get 'proof' in form of a photo.
Also noticed a perfectly round 2" hole in the very top of the house - a woodpecker excursion, Beth guesses, perhaps in search of wasps in warm weather.
11 AM

Classic skiing 57:48 intensity: (7:00 @1) + (33:48 @2) + (17:00 @3) 3.11 mi (18:35 / mi) +69m 17:23 / mi

Classic ski from Rob Road to OJR & walked back on BBR. Beth took us (Z&M) to SM track. Had red wax for c. 35F but, damn, no grip.
Annoying - price of wanting some performance vs waxless & missing - could do some marathon skate but mostly just plod & concentrate on not sliding back. Generally a flat track, soft snow - wide enough for skate but was not expecting that. Lots of snow bombs. Haven't been there in a few years for skiing or running. Walked back juggling dogs on rope, skis & poles & can of coke.

Classic skiing 45:00 [2] 3.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Lethargic-type winter snowfall day. On late side, went out in search of SM trails to use w/ waxless. No place in mind then it occurred to me to try BMS. Lot just plowed. Got to dog-walking corner thinking maybe the trails ahead & 2 SMs passed to light the way! - the only 2 in 45 minutes. Followed trail across BCR & started home but wasn't sure enough of the trails & decided against. Passed thru one amazing, snow-clad marsh & a string of fields. Was surprised to see proximity of houses & roads on Gmaps after - seemed a wooded winter wonderland pretty far from people which wasn't the case. Didn't think I'd have anything to write home about...
Still snowing at 5:30.

The owl returned & spent all day apparently looking at the front door of the house! He was still perched on the same branch just before dark.

Skate skiing 1:00:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (35:00 @3) 6.5 mi (9:14 / mi)

Skate at Turkey Trails - no idea what I wanted to do. Had gotten late and was not interested in running. Had to go to work, so went to look at ski trails & found enough good surface to be pleased...lilly white groomed surface in quite a few places, corn husks & bare ground in others. 3 others there. Gray & drizzle, then light snow.

Trail/woods running 53:27 intensity: (27:00 @1) + (26:27 @2) 2.71 mi (19:43 / mi) +106m 17:35 / mi
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

KRTF on SM trails. Had the Boulder Tr in mind and did get to what must be Bow's biggest boulder - would be a very respectable bldr at Pawtuckaway. Took a smaller spur & ended up at the end of a dead-end lane. Left Boulder Tr for the woods, then power line & back. SM trails were in surprisingly good shape - after a fresh snow they would make for very good skiing being wide & groomed and KRTF being gently rolling terrain. There were 2 dogs in a fenced-in back yard in a frenzy because Z&M were in their perceived space and/or because M is in heat.

Slo-Go short loop from NHH like days of yore. Had hoped to make it out at noon but lost to sleight-of-hand. True Northwest nastiness on Ironworks. Saw Dave A again, running south on South St. 3/4ths moon tonight if it doesn't blow away.

(taken from an upstairs room yesterday)

I spotted an owl
But not a spotted it was.
Matter of fact
Bar none,
It was THAT one...

A winkin' at me
From its perch in a tree....
As if to say "hee, hee
Take a picture of me".

So I took the picture
And left for the day.
The owl however
Did stay and stay.
But finally did leave,
No tricks up its sleeve.
It flew off empty-handed
As the red squirrel reprimanded.

Road running 19:49 intensity: (14:00 @2) + (5:49 @3) 2.1 mi (9:26 / mi)

At SOPS, went to renew driver's license & then started at Fish & Game - on a 5k course I've run several Marches in the past. No speeding ticket for me today. Forgot to stop watch. Need regular running.

Road running 40:10 intensity: (20:10 @2) + (20:00 @3) 4.05 mi (9:55 / mi) +117m 9:06 / mi

BHS-Middle loop. Warm & gray, S wind, rain coming in the NE weather circus. Nice place to run - always snow-free, minimal traffic. Twice around, too hot first loop. Tiniest of puddles (somewhat symbolic) at evident lowest point in loop - looked at watch to keep track of where it would be in profile = 3.00. Haven't just plain run on macadam in quite some time.

Classic skiing 1:22:02 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (1:12:02 @2) 3.69 mi (22:14 / mi) +72m 20:58 / mi

Outback, classic, woods & SM trails with Z&M. Did not have a plan but went up contours & then PL & trails were available. Snowmobile trails were good to very good - back loops had been groomed & smooth surface was still present on the side for maybe 1/2 mi. Debris not too bad. Still windy but not biting cold. Encountered a couple on SMs & one car on Allen - had considered returning thru the woods but recalled more blowdown than I had inclination to face/get around. Walking/jogging on Allen sand/gravel is ski boot abuse, however.

Encountered Dave A yesterday & today - yesterday on Iron Works, stopped to talk (w/o pulling over, nearly same place as some 15 years ago!) - we talked for more than a minute before a snow plow showed in the rear view mirror. Dave still works night shifts at a PO & I wouldn't be surprised if he almost never misses his daily run.

Skate skiing 30:00 [2] 2.5 mi (12:00 / mi)

At Turkey Trails, goal was repeat of yesterday but it was a nasty windy day - needed a lee which could be found but general inhospitality of the ambiance directed me back to the car.

Lost power later - impressive gusts.

Weightexercise workout 40:00 intensity: (30:00 @1) + (10:00 @2)

weights & cardio at Y - Beth dropped me off, went to PF & picked me up.

Classic skiing 30:00 [2] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Had to try crust skiing around the house woods at end of day. Crust was mostly supportive (around 20F today after 35F yesterday), a bit debris-laden but made a loop of the SS tracks, staying to side & dogs mostly on the hard tracks. Fun views of distant house etc thru the woods - doesn't pan out that way in warm months when visual gaps fill in. Brilliant red sunset.

Snowmobile tracks were probably too crusty to bother with - didn't sample.

Skate skiing 55:00 [3] 4.0 mi (13:45 / mi)

Skate drills at Turkey Farm, mostly w/o poles. Warm again, still good surface most stretches. Chatted with a fellow in CSU outfit.

Classic skiing 40:00 [2] 1.5 mi (26:40 / mi)

Classic skate DP in woods off Parsons Way. Started on SM trail but 2 SMs came by a short white later. I stepped into woods & hoped dogs, around curve, downhill, out of sight, were clear. Then sensibly proceeded into woods, first some SS tracks then just trackless woods. Trees far enough apart, sunk only a few inches in snow, not too deep for dogs, & able to change course freely for palatable ups and downs. Just wandered where fancy fancied, later closing a circle by always choosing left & finally crossing outgoing tracks. Was enough "adventure" that I'll go back tomorrow sans dogs & try a wander of Bow Pioneers' SM tracks, an interesting alternative view of Bow. Run some of them in warm weather but often they cross marshes/swamps.

Queen of the moment

Aside: after a morning conversation, googled Fox-Harvey plot, Freemont Cemetery, Bancroft, MI & found an obituary written July, 1945 of great grandmother, Lillian Belle Harvey who died that month, about 8 months before I was born. Just waiting (re)discovery after a short search - from Clark Country records, WI. . A most interesting read...brought to life a personal 'long ago'. 1945: "the span (b. 1859) of Mrs. Harvey's life witnessed the development of practically all the mechanisms of modern times". How time has marched on.

Snowshoes 45:00 [1] 1.7 mi (26:28 / mi)

SS walks, warm! 45F around 3pm on second walk. Snow wet/settled but SS still useful. March-like sun, nice using the outback versus driving to the PL.

Skate skiing 30:00 [3] 3.9 mi (7:42 / mi)

Skate briefly after work - work day extended by 90' - I'd forgotten that obligation. Great groomed surface: sl crusty, very slippery. Good days need using - there aren't many.

2 SS walks for DPs today. Second was as far down stream as I've gone - easy to travel, see well etc. Different mindset in warm wx: generally don't bother.

Snowshoes 20:00 [1] 0.5 mi (39:59 / mi)

SS with dogs, nearing 40F.... Packed snow, pleasant, in bit of a hurry, did it twice as fast as the other day. Need to measure the route. Nice to have a SS route - think it's been 2 years.

Alpine 45:00 [3]

Half day downhill at Sunapee. Was 38F at bottom, quite windy though.
Also more crust than I cared for on some runs - rained last night, even there.
7 PM

Snowshoes 20:19 [1] 0.39 mi (52:04 / mi)

Evening DP with Beth, unexpected as it was her turn. But a night loop was alluring. She led & wore the bright LED light, I followed in her "afterglow". Balmy. 0.1mi less than I guessed.

Classic skiing 1:00:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (35:00 @2) + (15:00 @3) 2.5 mi (24:00 / mi)

Went in search of local ski opportunity & dealing with dog demands - needed SM trails. Finally resorted to PL, then got idea of making our way to WH Rd and home in a loop. Nice enough - there were maybe 2" fresh on not-much-used SM track which worked fine. Had a green wax which worked ok but had to remove skis once to go uphill on narrow track. Nothing from PL out to Allen but deep, untracked snow. Z worked pretty hard when I wasn't ahead - M just fell in line, smart for a change. Cut thru neighbor's drive-bkyard & down Allen. Snow turned to freezing rain about halfway thru.

Note

Nothing doing re "training": 118 mi drive for lunch at noon, 134 miles for dinner at six, 16 mi home by 9:30p, gone 12h, dogs, too.

'78 blizzard memories led to rereading training log from that period, leading up to Boston marathon '78 - a period when running 10 or more miles daily was mandatory most days.

Day of the blizzard entry (February 6, 1978): "Monday, blizzard with wind up to 45+ - ran Comm, Lake, Beacon, 16, Comm. About 11.5 mi in nearly 100 min - saw only 2 other runners @ very end."

(near as I can
figure
from description (off by 0.8 mi, no gps then, used to drive the routes to see what was)

Tuesday: "best snowfall - ever - complete paralysis - nature reigns. Ran 12.5 - nearly to Wellesley center - saw Peter B. and ran back with him - stopped at his house for tea and continued cold home about an hour later. World was a whitewash, no cars to speak of. "

Wed, 2/8: "run to Chelsea from Newtonville - Mill - Comm - Beacon - Storrow. 12 1/2 over Tobin - 'world under seige' deserted cars, flashing lights, only big trucks on Tobin - setting sun - very beautiful and intense."
(a run to an ED shift Chelsea, MA)

finally: Feb 9: "about 12 3/4 run to Concord Ave, Camb + then home on Brattle, Rte 16 - still much paralyzed here - house still plowed in." (home from that shift)

By recalling, I'm hoping to remember so as to run a bit more than I seem prone to. Mindset is key, experience/details help.

Snow shovelling 45:00 [2]

Snow shovelling (light/dry snow); I might maintain it's bonafide exertional training seeing as, in some, it can cause heart attacks.

35 years since the blizzard of February, '78. It seems as much is being made of this storm.

Snowshoes 35:00 [2] 0.6 mi (58:19 / mi)

SS walk with Beth. More than 2' in some of the open. Walked along the stream & then onto the contours. Very nice under the hemlocks.
Too deep for the dogs. As a matter of fact, even with the snowshoes, I sank further than I would have thought. Need to use the trail again & again - will make a nice loop. Nothing to see but snowiness. We took a short walk in the storm last night. At one point, we heard a snort - had to have been a deer bedded down, disturbed by us. What a world in which to make do.

Friday Feb 8, 2013 #

Woods/trail 38:00 intensity: (19:00 @1) + (19:00 @2) 2.0 mi (19:00 / mi)

Guess work distance & "training" in bonafide quotes. Stopped at SPS. XC was mostly ice under new snow, surprised me. Went mostly off path in woods, not knowing where for maybe 20' which captured imagination. Some nice boulder gardens, one boulder about as big as any I've seen outside of Pawtuckaway. M ran into a fence, two small cuts around her right eye. Winter onslaught at the door making skiing & maybe SS default.

Track 15:38 [3] 3.6 km (4:21 / km)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

SPS track after work, fighting off nap mentality. No snow/ice got me thinking track. Cold though for track, 25F, & bundled up. Hard work, out of practice, ideally 2x/wk had I a track. Still, could be done at BHS where roads can be free of snow, ice & traffic. 8' pace was the goal and that was work. Last of bare ground for a while.

Road/trail 48:00 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (33:00 @2) 3.0 mi (16:00 / mi)

Wander along east Merrimack shore, parking in lot near transfer station. Paths led into the underbrush, too many ended too soon & most sheltered a homeless shelter in shambles, an Armageddon-appearing envt.. The most promising path along the river bank finally ended in brush and a temporary camp with a large, tattered Old Glory suspended from a branch (can see the encounters on sat view). Piles of empty beer cans & plastic containers - all encountered in the search for a run in a pretty place! The city needs a 5 mile bike & jogging path along the east bank - a waste of a great possibility. The blahs, waiting for the sap to rise it appears. Route

Wander along River Road, 3A industrial area. Had been on Dunklee Rd earlier looking for the "lost acre" & decided it would be a reasonable place for a run: by the river, quiet, not much traffic, new. Thru large sandpit, then to tracks, to RR to Ferry Rd - couldn't get to end, must have been an old ferry crossing, now Bow backwater. Then along PL, tracks, then crossed over a frozen marsh to what appeared to be a path & was. But it took me away fm tracks. Came out in back of some business & found myself heading back to RR. A train engine was preparing to haul away or deliver cars, either cement or coal. Sore feet, mostly on rr grade gravel.

Seen better days (a commonality)

Skate skiing 55:00 [2]

Clinic at Gunstock, at 6p. Should have brought a better head lamp. Jima there as well - no one else other than instructor. Crusty surface called for edges. Learned a few things and had an 'adventure', away from local routine. Cold, dark sky filled with bright stars outside the headlamp sphere added to the moment.

Trail/woods running 53:21 intensity: (48:21 @1) + (5:00 @2) 1.77 mi (30:08 / mi) +46m 27:53 / mi

Outback wander, started late given 3:40p movie. Entered the woods, mostly gave up on 'running' mentality (thick initially, then along marsh edge) - started walking & took in what there was to see. Saw moose droppings & prints, always pleasing to see that 'hold outs" exist. Woods for most part are snow-free.

Super Bowl Sunday provided LINCOLN, 16 years (back to TITANIC) of avoidance of an American obsession.

West End Farm trail, a bit of a trial, yak traks essential. Wanted a small adventure and first of February was a good date. Didn't see much except for 3 ladies walking a portion - wish I'd stopped to chat. Probably could have taken the dogs (thinking too long) - Beth says they seemed indifferent when she drove away, leaving me in a setting that's second nature to them. Nice day
