Snow shovelling 50:00 [1]

On the roof first thing fighting 'white sponge' potential best I could. Worked up a sweat along with cold fingers. Foggy/misty, almost a foreboding, a lousy day in the making from the point of inconvenience should one go out.

Road/trail 12:00 [2] 1.0 mi (12:00 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Defyance

With dogs after dropping a photo off at Ken's place. Late in a dreary day, more a token expression than anything else. On PL slushy SM tracks & to end of Abby & back, clearing up.

9 AM

Snowshoes 15:00 [1] 0.3 mi (49:59 / mi)

Am DP, snowing hard - light fluffy stuff. Dogs could stay on top of old so had a pretty good time meandering. Some 15" since Friday.

All for the having

12 PM

Weightexercise workout 31:00 [1]

Quiet at the TI, lots of space to oneself. Most every visit find another weight device of interest.
4 PM

Snow shovelling 35:00 [1]

More of winter's chores. Thought ice dam potential was gone but the force functions 24/7 under the right circumstances.

Bought a ticket for the April Fool FP, plane ticketing done. Now to remember to enter the events....

Skate skiing 45:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (30:00 @3) 5.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Late pm skate at White Farm, mellow. Got some coaching from a fellow who obviously was a coach, maybe Concord HS. An older couple was just coming, dog in tow to a place where they're not to go - but did not say anything.

Days of common extensor tendonitis on the left. Had twice on the right side for different reasons. Not sure what brought this left-sided episode on. Doesn't affect training but is noted enough that it should be addressed.

Walking 15:00 [1] 0.5 mi (29:59 / mi)

AM DP, WSW-type day w/ about 2" new snow now.

Classic skiing 36:00 [2] 3.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

Distance a guess. Drove to SPS, snowing heavily. Wax skis (red wax), maybe 4-5" fresh un-tracked snow. When I returned to the car, about ready to leave, tried the road where campus police had packed the snow with maybe a fresh 1" on top - & that was nice. Should have gone toward the boathouse right from the get-go. Right wax - I could ski up hills w/o having to herringbone. Car nearly got stuck twice, wet snow and traction don't agree with my front wheel drive & new-this-winter, regular tread tires

Snow shovelling 20:00 [1]

First wet shoveling I can recall for this winter. No way was I going to the gym today although the visit was due.

Skate skiing 27:22 intensity: (20:00 @3) + (7:22 @4) 3.19 mi (8:35 / mi)

At White Farm at noon. Had Mocha for dog T so tended to her needs for some 15'. Warm, sunny, sl slushy, in places & hard in others. Encountered Jan McClure & visited some 5'. Ran out of time for the entire perimeter.

Beth saw a chipmunk today.
Ice dams be damned....

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.5 mi (39:59 / mi)

AM PM, 12F did not feel cold, esp facing the sun. Bright, blue, 2/3rds moon in the West. Forgot yak traks so some diligent stepping but then packed snow under PL. Noted a tube sand we forgot from the other day. Car got sl. stuck in flat, rough ice.

Not sleeping so turned on the light at 0257 & off at 0357. In between read some 40 pages of John Irving's "Last Night in Twisted River". Moon was just making itself visible in the upper left corner of the BR window. By time I was done, it was in the right hand corner. Thru a main character, the author was commenting on Bush, 911, American in decay etc. He quotes Samuel Johnson: "patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels". Calls up behavior of Bush, Cheney & Co. and their Patriot Act. Mentions Kerry's being a war hero & then a war protester &, indeed, a patriot. Bush, in particular, was nowhere to be found then. But the "dumber-than-dog-shit American public believed Kerry wasn't patriotic enough to be the U.S. president." Anyone who voted for Bush in '04, was, well, dumber than....

Road running 52:54 [2] 5.5 mi (9:37 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Defyance

Luti 5, CCW - blue & bright. Stopped at White Farm & was pleasantly
surprised to see good grooming for skate with soft surface over hard. It seemed nordic was on hold locally due to ice/crust/debris but not the case.
4 PM

Skate skiing 22:15 [2] 2.81 mi (7:55 / mi)

Had to return: skate at White Farm - parking lot full! Very slithery, in shade a bit hard to get an edge in, ideal in sun. Encountered Eugene S (G unit soc worker) & walked with him for 300m in button down shirt, sleeves rolled up, a moment of mild mentality. Indeed pleasant!

Weightexercise workout 34:00 [1]

Gym - did not get outside til end of day. A rest day from running made sense. Bit washed out from Corey's coming for dinner. Corey, a 42 y/o ex-Marine, father of lovely 3 girls, truck driver & neighbor. Married an Argentine woman who is in BA with their girls right now. C. drives an 18 wheeler 568 mi RT 6 of 7 nights from Concord, across GWB to NJ. One of his tricks for staying awake when hurting is to stop at same place near Hartford, go down the off ramp and park on the on ramp (between 3-4am) & do wind sprints....

Monday Feb 21, 2011 #

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.6 mi (33:19 / mi)

AM DP, got into woods as crust could support. Icy, debris-covered, however, for the most part.

Bought Beth a RT to Scotland. Puzzle gets solved a piece at a time. For me, the actual purchasing of airline tickets is one of the ultimate hassles. Today's experience was no different.

However, returned less than 2 hours later and, within 10', had a RT to Stockholm.... Now, just need RT Stockholm-Glasgow and to enter the O-ringen...nothing like reality taking shape.

Did RT Stockolm-Glasgow, also easy. Different web site but near same presentation.

I believe this photo was taken from Boott Spur. Without spending some time looking at map details, I believe Lion's Head is just to right of center with Tuckerman's behind the snow ridge in the foreground.

Woodhill loop, CCW. 30F in sun, just plain cold in shade. Started W, in shade, into some wind, could see I was still tired from Saturday. Wished there was a shorter loop but said 'this is good for you' & continued. South section was away from wind, toward sun but uphill. Next was away from wind, last toward wind, sun behind but barn detectable. Tired was the theme.

Walking 20:00 [1] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

PM DP at Harvard sports area...where there's money, the grass is green(er)

Went to Cambridge with Beth and dogs to visit the museum of comparative anatomy at Harvard as well as peek around & then go to the NE ATF meet at Gordon Field house at Harvard. Great place to spend time, the Agassiz museum. Started quiet but became a (learning) beehive of parents & children. A 7'10" by 6' turtle shell from a river, the fact that crocs were once swimming the shores of Greenland during the Eocene - list is endless, so is the story. Noted bare ground in the area.

Lots of color for a reason

Stick mimicry

A hopping (and ingesting) machine

Spiral marvel

After, made our way to the meet. Have not seen such a display of fast-twitch musculature in ages - a circus of motion: around, on, across, inside the track along with the "dance" of field events. Went from comparative anatomy on one side of the river to comparing anatomy on the other. Meet was in constant motion, heats starting nearly back to back. BP ran an 800m in 2:31+, winning M55 (a bit too much left over:-). After, the three of us went to a nearby Alston pub for beer & appetizers. An interesting day!

BP in stride

All said & done, a rest day. Time for a Mudslinger.

Walking 16:30 [1] 0.75 mi (22:00 / mi)

Am DP same as yesterday but a lot of ice under the PL. So much that, being a wise-guy, I got car stuck enough to have to jog home, get Beth, sand etc to free up. Warm & windy.

Walking 21:00 [1] 0.7 mi (29:59 / mi)

PM DP, pesky pests. Down to beaver slough, got blown there but when turned around, wind had taken off somewhere else. Had yak traks for for first time this winter. A group sledding & 2 walking on the slough but gone from sight when we got there.

Road running 9:00 [3] 1.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Warm up for race.
5 PM

Road running 39:14 intensity: (20:00 @4) + (19:14 @5) 3.43 mi (11:26 / mi) +101m 10:29 / mi

Kingman Farm Night SS race, Madbury. Good hard effort, first time on racing SS this winter (Dion rental). A lot of narrow paths (looked that way in dark). Got in a place and stayed there for duration of race. One fellow passed in the large field. Several were breathing on my tail for the last third but never did catch/pass. Rolling in woods, long field section with serpentine path (narrow, maybe 10" high sides, hard footing) and windy; and a hill at end that we ran onto, along/down & back & then down. A bunch of switchbacks both sides, fairly steep and when I thought it was the final up, there were quite a few more! Could not find Petzl, had old headlamp which was ok but when I got hot, removed head band, it did not fit tight, so carried in one hand, then the other. Was a bit difficult to see path when no one right in front. Was third in 60+, not sure how many there were, not a lot. But went there with little in mind except honest effort in novel activity. Men over 60 was first award cat, 3rd was called first, so I found myself first on a podium, amused to have rec'd a six pack of Red Hook beer as well as a homemade cake. Also won another RH six pak in the raffle (maybe 40% did). All the handouts plus the good food, much home baked made for an unusual Sat. evening.

Awards, no mudslinging allowed

Diane was responsible for my showing up, thanks to her, a lot of fun. Start at 6p but never saw a moon. When we looked later, it was overcast. Went to an Italian restaurant, Dante's, with D & Brian in Barrington after.

Walking 15:30 [1] 0.75 mi (20:40 / mi)

AM DP loop on packed snow. Smokey sky in the east, mild. Dogs all smiles for quality & distance.

Road running 51:11 [2] 5.5 mi (9:18 / mi)
shoes: NB 993

Noon Luti loop, high 50s, T shirt. Passed two runners in T and shorts. Idea was to just go the distance. Entered a SS race for tomorrow eve so some energy conservation was in order.

Testosterone Inn as goodbye to the work week.

Alpine 1:00:00 [1]

At Sunapee from 2p on. Mostly sunny, mid-40s, packed surface, no ice, very nice. Downhill is about the same training contribution as walking, golfing, rogaine practice - does add some isometrics, agility/balance as well - even humility should one fall too often or too hard. Using the FR 305 for some data would have been fun but forgot it.

SloGo at noon, very mild. Rest day from much of anything. Would have tried skiing but stuff in car at garage.

Walking 10:00 [1] 0.3 mi (33:19 / mi)

PM DP, packed is on slippery side, yak-trak like.

Tuesday Feb 15, 2011 #

Walking 10:00 [1] 0.3 mi (33:19 / mi)

AM DP, cold, clear, still windy. So windy last night, I needed to take a peek. Wind roaring in tree tops, house creaking and wind chime clanking, all bathed in moonlight. Got up at 0400, stirred dogs who initially thought I was off my rocker & went out. Walked along SB but should have gone into woods. Much mellower by sunrise, the sky blown clear blue.

Walking 52:15 [4] 5.94 mi (8:48 / mi) +186m 8:01 / mi

Home from Garry's, hi teens, any wind at back for most part - no unpalatable wind chill. Decent energy and effort, haven't done a "day's work" in a while. Nice to do some of the old route, sign of early spring.

Came home for DP (inside all day). Open door, think 2 dogs go out - certainly had expressed the usual interest. Z, however, more interested in scrounging for bird seed. Can't for life of me find M - look inside & out. Can it w/ Z who doesn't care. Find M inside jealously guarding a leather bone.

Road running 1:05:01 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (35:01 @3) 6.6 mi (9:51 / mi)

Went out at 1:40, after MSO - not to be deprived of midday fresh air. Ironworks-Luti loop, March mellowness! Finished in a tee shirt, getting overheated. Not much energy, no clear reason, just Monday, Monday, not to be trusted. Need some pavement pounding this week. Entered a snowshoe race at UNH Sat eve, prodded by Diane. 48F at 5pm, interesting clouds much of day, CF on the way.

Walking 18:00 [1]

AM DP to PL - road in had been softened by a groomer since yesterday pm's visit. Met a man & young daughter & their pissed off dog (probably because leashed). Z&M all hackles. They were rare visitors going sledding. Passed by not 6' away w/ dogs moaning & hissing & the little girl pleasantly smiling.

Walking 12:00 [1] 0.3 mi (39:59 / mi)

PM DP round the SS tracks w/ Z. Mocha went off with Beth to return Janelle to school. Marvelled at the 5pm light. Z. got way ahead, I could see her in the yard, undoubtedly hurrying along to scrounge up any uneaten birdseed on the ground. I'll miss this packed-hard path thru the woods & snow at winter's end. Had only it been longer & more creative.

Watched 3 movies with granddaughter Janelle, here 3 nights, 4 days (long wkend off fm nearby school). Soccer & hockey jock, wanted to take her out to try skate ski but didn't happen. She enjoyed grandparents' conversation at dinner....

J. at Christmas.

Skate skiing 36:13 [3] 3.41 mi (10:37 / mi) +97m 9:45 / mi

Skate, surface looked soft from this am's walk. More I do it, more this place is hard to make do but better for having done sa/ome. Removed skis twice for climb - herringbone wasn't worth it tho' it would get the HR up - track perhaps less than 5' width. White farm is looking so much better being flat to sl. rolling and is pretty well-groomed for Nordic.

Saturday Feb 12, 2011 #

Skate skiing 53:00 intensity: (26:30 @1) + (26:30 @3) 3.35 mi (15:49 / mi)

PM DP, one of three for the day. This on skate skis w/ dogs - much of surface was hard/crusty, bit of a rogue's gallery for skate ski. 26', 2.5 mi

First DP was at Rollins Park on way to town; got out of parking lot by walking in others' tracks. 12', 0.4 mi

Middle one was a Dillon DP on the SS course around the house as in Grandpa attention detail. A cute little devil - 20' of "sitting" for him in the house means not 10" can go by w/o noting what he's up to and likely preventing it from happening. A lot easier outside with a track he can't escape. Sure fell a lot. Wearing Grandma's gloves & hat (his not convenient) which came off a lot - not a whiner. 15', 0.35mi

Dillon pacification

12 PM

Road/trail 59:28 intensity: (19:28 @2) + (40:00 @3) 2.61 mi (22:47 / mi) +56m 21:22 / mi

Out the door on waxless, in need of trying skiing on top of crust. No eye contact w/ dogs...could see Z looking out thru window. Crust supported, a bit too much pine debris but excellent in open, esp. on slough. Woods were quite passable due to depth of snow. Took off skis to come down deepest part & was up to knees. Warm.

Friday Feb 11, 2011 #

Road running 1:00:59 [3] 6.6 mi (9:14 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Defyance

Luti w/ Ironworks spliced on. Fine February midday. 0.5 mi of
snow/ice, rest dry pavement. More caution than I remember on the ice - well, no point in falling. Warm sun heading south, should've kept going. Good sign to have chosen/done!

Old routes combined

Skate skiing 47:00 [2] 4.5 mi (10:27 / mi)

At SPS, crusty/slithery in shade, softer in sun. Groomer passed thru & made it very nice. Another part had 1/2" powder on crust & that was fine, too.
Chickens out enjoying the day.

Walking 10:00 [1]

PM DP, just around dark (but a bunch after 5pm!). Able to walk on SS track w/o falling thru. Winter can be nice!

Classic skiing 12:00 [2] 0.5 mi (23:59 / mi)

Short DP more to see if the crust would hold - which it did which made for any direction that suited. Dogs stayed on top about half the time - but annoyance may not be in their psyche. Skied along the SS tracks which are hard surface now. Where yesterday's snow fell off the branches, crust was rough. What a change from 24 hrs ago!

Road running 57:33 intensity: (47:33 @3) + (10:00 @4) 6.2 mi (9:17 / mi) +120m 8:45 / mi
shoes: Brooks Defyance

1pm, Fisk-Little Pond, cw. Cold at start, where will is wondering but get going, get out of wind, get away from cars, get warmed up & things get better. Good energy.

Classic skiing 12:00 [1] 0.4 mi (29:59 / mi)

Like the AM, get on skis & walkabout, watch the dogs struggle. Mocha went back to the house as tummy was paramount.

Snow shovelling 20:00 [1]

Mix of DP, photo excursion & shovel/rake on a warm, breathless morning

Nature's delicate tracery before the day's first breath

Skate skiing 45:00 [3] 4.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

at White Farm, warm, wind in the open, found a long stretch in the lee of trees.

Weightexercise workout 30:00 [1]

Snowshoes 15:00 [1] 0.3 mi (49:59 / mi)

PM DP, not by choice. Beth has been at work all day, not home when I got here. Nice tho'...with dark coming, waves of white in the woods, new, dry cold weather. Dogs don't break thru on SS track. Maybe cold will make a crust that could support skis - that would be fun.

Monday Feb 7, 2011 #

Road running 52:20 [3] 5.5 mi (9:31 / mi)

@ noon, Luti 5, warm, shed hat & hand cover, still too hot. Even Clinton was agreeable.

Skate skiing 21:00 [3] 1.9 mi (11:03 / mi)

Skate - thought dogs were going to be part of equation but they were out shopping. Soft snowmobile track, a lot of ruts & small ridges of raised snow - quite a few places that call for herringbone. Marathon skate for the most part. A few level places where it's ready fun. Warm & quiet.

Snow shovelling 45:00 [1]

More shoveling & raking. Was able to remove (wacking with a hatchet) quite a bit of ice dam as it was warm enough and mandatory.... One 10 lb piece, falling almost 4', just missed the left foot before I became wise.

Skate skiing 21:00 [2] 2.1 mi (10:00 / mi)

PM DP - was tired & done for the day but it was so inviting (34F, calm, soft even) & dogs so pleading. Slithery surface of soft, packed snowmobile & a tad crusty in places.
All quiet on the evening front as Super Bowl kickoff is imminent.
10 AM

Classic skiing 1:20:16 [2] 4.95 mi (16:13 / mi) +97m 15:17 / mi

Went to Bear Brook, arrived around 10:30, temp was 35F. Had wind & freezing rain last night. Track had some debris & was a bit crusty but good. A lot of bending over for pine boughs, however. Had to turn around in one place where there was what appeared to be logging vs blowdown. Whatever, the trail disappeared in the mess & it did not seem worth it to find it on the other side. Saw one woman on SS with 3 dogs coming from the opposite direction doing noticeable "damage" to the XC track. Coming home, saw one shirtless fellow shoveling his roof & a local out in T shirt & shorts also shoveling.

Always admire this small stretch at BB, planted, elegant

Saturday Feb 5, 2011 #

Skate skiing 32:00 [2] 3.2 mi (10:00 / mi)

AM DP, thought it was groomed but only first 100m. PL was decently flat/packed. Some standing around, a bunch of marathon skate - efficiency of which is still better than classic. Overcast but bright so that snow surface was not readily clear at times. Good for dogs to have a surface they can function on.

Snow shovelling 35:00 [1]

Shoveling the upper roof covered with a lot of snow.

Snowshoes 16:00 [1] 0.3 mi (53:19 / mi)

PM DP - Beth's day-old tracks useful. Went off on my own - snow deep , making it honest work, Mocha tagging along. Zoe went back to the house.
Likely would have had a better time of it w/o dogs. Had considered BB today but did not get that direction in the am & the idea lost in interest for today.
Tomorrow - however, it sounds like a freezing rain falling at the moment.

Today, in the depth of winter

Same place, May greenery in the making

Walking 25:00 [1] 0.3 mi (1:23:18 / mi)

AM DP & rake & shovel. Brush dump road not plowed - near 10" of powder to contribute to cold feet. Back to house for more cleaning. Cold, bright blue morning.

Road running 1:00:00 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (30:00 @3) 5.85 mi (10:15 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Defyance

12pm: Bright, sunny, seemed windy at first. Couldn't decide whether to drive
away or not, or ski or run for that matter. Felt a run would be more honest (& noting total mileage more than supports) - ran Concord neighborhoods for a pleasant change from trees. A silver-haired lady (75ish?) eating with a spoon in her left hand and turning the wheel thru a 135 degree turn with her right not 5' away from me made my hour! Goal was to run for an hour. Up close & personal with city traffic, something to see.

Snow shovelling 30:00 [1]

Walks & more on roof - uncover the dam & see slush & even flowing water behind!

Alpine 45:00 [1]

Departed work at noon for a Sunapee pm downhill, for all the fresh air I could find*. Was blue dome, calm, 23F. What would one do without escape, crashing headlong into perspective or is it finding perspective by accident? In any event, memorable on a small memory scale. Alpine enthusiasts are a different feather from me but the love of the hills, the somewhat cold, the crystals on branches, parents chasing kids, laughter on the slopes, the far views. Many things are better than a windowless office.

After the skiing, drove to Hermanos in Concord for a dinner with Diane (who got my running going in a more responsible manner a few years ago than went to Manchester VA) & Liz (colleague psychiatrist, Radcliffe '67ish, used to run marathons). I feel privileged to be occasionally invited to the ladies' night out dinner!

Have had too much to eat today but came home & attacked Captain Crunch anyway, a point I shouldn't be making. If I were to enter a Lost & Found, I'd remain on the shelf, never claimed. I'd have to find my own way out - but do so anyway, in real life, after most winters.

Snow shovelling 25:00 [1]

Another 4" added to a "silence deep and white". Dogs go out with enthusiasm until they see it's a work party. Mocha retires first, back to the door to bark for inn. Zoe hangs in longer but finally the last of hope for fun is gone. And so are they - leaving just me and the sound of silence.

Classic skiing 40:00 [2] 2.3 mi (17:24 / mi)

1200 noon @ SPS third day in a row. Snowing hard. Mine were the only tracks - maybe 6" new snow over packed. Some stopping by woods stuff... sort of out of Robert Frost except midday.

Weightexercise workout 40:00 [1]

BBC, nicely devoid of cars & people. City well-plowed, no problem getting around. Came home to plowed drive & shoveled walk. Did some roof raking.

AM DP, an entire loop it was so enticing. Groomed for S M's - one or two places where 2 cars could pass. Sooty sky, 10F, a few flakes portending the "monster" storm.

Classic skiing 37:00 [2] 2.5 mi (14:48 / mi)

1pm, SPS, waxless, very wintry, 3" new powder on top of packed. Saw one woman on SS with 3 dogs: 2 yellow labs, 9 mo & 4 mo as well as a Golden. Winter siege mentality seems pretty prevalent. Was on way to gym for mandatory 30', got into town traffic & turned around. Motivation wasn't there.

Snow shovelling 15:00 [1]

Walk & roof. 20" by tomorrow eve, light & fluffy!
