Small session today to save the legs for Saturday. Up to the sappy wood-chip path for some high cadence madness. Felt pretty fast, and was absorbing all the lumps and tight turns pretty well. Shame my watch didn't pick up on most of it, instead it cut out all the corners as well as missed all the climb. Also a very poor HRM performance.

Started in Scolty car park. Up over the tower, up over Goach, along the ridge and down the long trail to Potarch. Taps aff in the baking sun, awesome weather.

Then into some technical training on Sluie kindly planned by Jon. They had a multiple mass start session planned which was tempting but decided to keep things easy and see how well I could orienteer with my dad's old compass. 5.2km ran on a 5km course, with a bit of faff at number 9 (checking and confirming my whereabouts), so not bad.

'Terrain' reps
Feeling a bit rough all day but still good enough to at least try the warm up and see how it went. Everything normal so did the planned session: 10min tempo, 3 x 3 x 30s [15s]...[60s], 5min tempo. All on rough, rocky overgrown field aside from the start of the first tempo which was on trails. Plenty of gate vaulting and cow dodging. Solid session; felt pretty half hearted but probably did some sort of good. Quite happy with how comfortable I felt during the whole session.

Scolty compass work
...except my compass has gone totally kaput. Usually this would be a mere pathetic excuse at the end of a dodgy race but it genuinely points east, west, south, anywhere it wants. Only realised this half way round so focussed on exit features for the rest of the exercise. Good enough O given the circumstances, but definitely need to get a new compass asap. My only thoughts at this desperately sad time is the question of how long my compass has been like this, as I don't use it often enough to really notice...
