Long Hills
Me and Will decided to finally hit the Pentlands. We weren't really prepared. Started slowly up past Hillend with some light snow, legs quite sore from Thursday and cold still not 100%. We gradually climbed up along the ski slope and we were both already feeling it. Would have been ok except the deep snow, a foot in most places, was extremely sapping. Got to the top eventually quite knackered and started battling the wind along the skyline to Allermuir. We got to the top, took a few quick beauty pics and decided to hit Castlelaw as the track looked good. Shortcut through the terrain which had some crazy drifting snow. Got to the top feeling quite good and we again decided to extend to Turnhouse. Descended pretty rapidly and along the tracks with gradually disappearing snow. Got to the car park full of black ice and completely smashed my arse off the ground. Retied my shoes and got a drink at the lowest point only to realise that holes had formed in my socks directly behind the holes in my shoes on both feet so I was pretty much semi-barefoot, nightmare! Slowly climbed Turnhouse, now quite tired. It started hailing and I pretty much bonked whilst Will pushed on. The snow was pretty deep here again. Back down soon enough and we began to head back towards Heriot Watt. Shortcut through the terrain killed me but then was ok for the final few km. Both of us were ridiculously hungry by the end with no food and we both had a bit of a dodgy Achilles. Popped into Scotmid before getting some dirty scran at Will's.
Never really been that shattered after a run but glad we did it. Probably sound quite negative but it was actually brilliant fun. We definitely could have been more prepared though. Lesson learned.
