Note

http://www.scottishathletics.org.uk/calendar/event... - 23rd yesterday, very happy with that. Will be around top ten in my year. Beat all the Aberdeen folk so that's an extra bonus.
However looking at the splits I wasn't running too fast, although I certainly felt like I was. Unsure on my performance.

Pretty exited for this, slightly tight glute in the morning but I wasn't consiously bothered by it. Field of about 100 who were all pretty beast, and since I'm bottom year I was a bit worried on how well I'd do. Started ridiculously fast at 2.5/k at one point, managed to point that out to daniel at the first bend. Slowed down into a good pace eventually but was being overtaken a bit too frequently for comfort. Up the main hill, managed to catch people up and began to overtake. Nice run down and back up for the loop ending the first lap. Managed to force out a few conversations with spectators but was still pretty knackered. Last few overtakes towards the end and then pretty much alone for the second lap between the front "pack" and the chasers. Didn't see daniel again, but luke was only 5 places in front. Second lap was painful, constantly trying to catch a guy in front and keep a guy behind away. Managed to gain ground on the climb but never caught him up. Last mini loop in agony but kept the chaser away with a good sprint at the finish.
Hopefully around top 20, maybe about 1-2 mins behind and 1.5 mins in front of daniel. Happy to have beaten him and only about 30s down on luke foss. Results to be confirmed later... First lap in 12.5, second lap in 13 so not bad constistency with the stupidly fast start. Good experience and might consider aberdeen AAC after seeing their pace, good fun seeing the seniors run too. Kenyan in first, robbie second, murray strain in 6th, and hector not far down either.

Note

Nice and easy day today, without doing nothing altogether. Sitting here 7 hours later I feel fine and unhurt from the gym today so a good easy run tomorrow - or even nothing - should set me up for the nationals as close to perfect as possible.

Not sure how much we actually did but that's a good guess. I didn't win a single game but it was my first go at it. Good fun, hit in the back once which left quite a mark. Got him back later by accidentally hitting him in his sore parts.

Inchmarnoch Nighto - Long - 4.9km
Slightly slower than glen dye (for actual course distances) but nevertheless running fast. Quite fresh at the start but never got up to race speed. Nice slope led me in to 1, no real fuss. Slightly off to the right heading out to number 2 but it was actually a nice line and led me straight up the re-entrant to the control. 3 popped up without actually navigating.
Nice track leg most of the way to 4, but as I slid down into the line of depressions, that should have led me straight there, I ran straight past it (still don't know how). Convinced that I would have seen it I ran further and down into a deep re-entrant where I relocated to hit the open and the control. Wasted maybe 2 minutes, but I really don't know how I missed that.
Easy enough to 5, just took it from the ride junction and aimed off to the right to ensure that I hit it from the expected side. Down to the rideand a hard climb to 6. Then headed off way too far left heading out for 7 and hit the fence almost perpendicularly. No big deal as it's a short leg and got it soon.
Opened my map for 8, and was satisfied to see more track running, so a chance to catch up my lost time. Bolted it on the straight ride, slightly daring, but the navigation was good and everything checked off the list as I went. Very lucky for 9 but I saw it without messing up or navigating to be fair. Crossed the ride at the high point heading to 10, but then aimed off right without realising and wasted a minute on the opposite side to what I thought of the ridge. Maybe 30s gone.
Nicely executed to 11, ran off without navigating, relocated very quickly just before the track and kept the speed right to the control. Poor bearing to 12 meant that I basically followed the overgrown ride without noticing. Also somehow crossed the track without seeing it. Anyway found myself on the map quickly an followed the spur and depressions into the control, although I just missed it by 5m and had to relocate again. Easy enough to 13 and the finish.
Very happy with the perfect re-locating today, saved me so much time that could have been wandering around aimlessly. Great area, almost like a culbin of deeside, and perfect training for portugal, especially in the low visibilty and in the night.

Great session, one of my favourite. Tried to take it easy but that didn't work, although I could have pushed harder towards the end so limited myself a bit. 2:00, 2:10, 2:20, 2:10 out and backs. Timed them all perfectly with a bit of a push at the end of every "back". Made it back every time. Recoveries didn't change so it got quite challenging. Slightly over striding as my upper left leg muscle is quite sore, just needs rest I hope. On the lighter side my heel pains have gone.
Certainly running further than last year for this set.

Glen Dye Night Cup - Long - 5.2km
Thought I would surely be knackered but felt so fresh as soon as I got out so properly raced it. Everything seemed to click today, and it was amazing running in the flattened-by-snow terrain and the moonlight. Chilly night but I went for the t-shirt anyway and the trousers made an appearance for the first time this season. Eyes were watering from the cold but quickly warmed up.
Started fast, and took the straight route to 1, spiked and off to 2. Paused a bit early but easily spotted. Navigating fast to 3, yet it was a very cheeky re-entrant and I stopped right on top of it without spotting it. Clean to 4 and 5, with bits of crusty snow in the open.
Across the road to 6 and a nice leg following a stream to 7. Now the weird box-butterfly. Along the ridge to 8 and back to the lake to 9, both fine, and back to 7 as control 10. Then another stream following leg to 11 and back to 9 as number 12. All done with ease.
13 seemed to pop up too early but I wasn't complaining and carried on up to 14, my only mistake. By now caught up someone, still don't know who it was, who was running pretty well. I thought I saw him leaving 14, although he was just finding it, so I searched for the pit and beyond. Quickly realised my mistake and backtracked to the correct pit.
Challenge was then to catch him up so a sprinted through 15 and 16. Crossing the stream was nice and refreshing as I was dripping in sweat. Although the contour were very vague, navigation was good and by the time I reached it I had overtaken the mystery man. Too far right for 18, just rushing I suppose, but it was visible from a good distance.
Easy path route to 19, where I managed to outrun the stranger. Saw a deer, which I only assumed was a bear at the time, and sped up. Through the nice obviouse contours of 20 and 21. Up the steep climb to 22, which was a proper task because I was knackered. Down to 23 and home.
Really nice course in such beautiful terrain. Good pace for a nighto, especially in Glen Dye. A real middle distance training event too: short distance, many controls, yet still the odd long leg. Congrats to Ali who managed to re-organise the postponed date of the event and was awarded with a massive turnout. Although it was weird to orienteer on Monday night, a must be lifetime first.

Dropped off at the petrol station and ran home along the river. Quite spooky in the moonlight I must say, and the wildlife didn't help. Saw a fox which looked like a wolf but after coming across a group of teens having a campfire, my fears disappeared. Noticed that they're redoing the part of the railway line next to my house which is great as it gets awfully muddy and wet in road flats. Heel got pretty sore towards the end from wearing orocs all weekend, hoefully will disappear as long as I keep off the roads.
