Glen Dye Night Cup - Long - 5.2km
Thought I would surely be knackered but felt so fresh as soon as I got out so properly raced it. Everything seemed to click today, and it was amazing running in the flattened-by-snow terrain and the moonlight. Chilly night but I went for the t-shirt anyway and the trousers made an appearance for the first time this season. Eyes were watering from the cold but quickly warmed up.
Started fast, and took the straight route to 1, spiked and off to 2. Paused a bit early but easily spotted. Navigating fast to 3, yet it was a very cheeky re-entrant and I stopped right on top of it without spotting it. Clean to 4 and 5, with bits of crusty snow in the open.
Across the road to 6 and a nice leg following a stream to 7. Now the weird box-butterfly. Along the ridge to 8 and back to the lake to 9, both fine, and back to 7 as control 10. Then another stream following leg to 11 and back to 9 as number 12. All done with ease.
13 seemed to pop up too early but I wasn't complaining and carried on up to 14, my only mistake. By now caught up someone, still don't know who it was, who was running pretty well. I thought I saw him leaving 14, although he was just finding it, so I searched for the pit and beyond. Quickly realised my mistake and backtracked to the correct pit.
Challenge was then to catch him up so a sprinted through 15 and 16. Crossing the stream was nice and refreshing as I was dripping in sweat. Although the contour were very vague, navigation was good and by the time I reached it I had overtaken the mystery man. Too far right for 18, just rushing I suppose, but it was visible from a good distance.
Easy path route to 19, where I managed to outrun the stranger. Saw a deer, which I only assumed was a bear at the time, and sped up. Through the nice obviouse contours of 20 and 21. Up the steep climb to 22, which was a proper task because I was knackered. Down to 23 and home.
Really nice course in such beautiful terrain. Good pace for a nighto, especially in Glen Dye. A real middle distance training event too: short distance, many controls, yet still the odd long leg. Congrats to Ali who managed to re-organise the postponed date of the event and was awarded with a massive turnout. Although it was weird to orienteer on Monday night, a must be lifetime first.
