JK Day 3 - Cold Ash - Long - Course 17 - 7.3km - 1st by 2mins +
Knew I had to have a good one today, as I was as knackered as the rest of the boys. Happy to have a late start as it meant the wait after the run was less nerve-racking and I could have an idea of a good time before my start, which, like it or not, I find motivating.
Start fast one again, dipping below 4/km 1. Spiked and off to 2. Glimpsed a control, which I knew was too early, in the corner of my eye and couldn't resist to check if it was fine. Of course it wasn't and I was down 20s relocating frantically. 5th going to 3, but a best split by 10s, showing the classic speeding up after a mistake. 1st again as I went through 3.
Smashed into a Swede going to 4, although I was the one who went flying onto the ground. Appologised fine but I was slightly disorientated and stood on top of 4 for a while without noticing it. Once again sped up to 5 with another best split. Straight off to 6, easy. Caught up someone ahead and was pushed by him to 6 and 7, 2nd best splits. 8 was my main mistake. I fought through the bushes eventually but came out on the left side of the "clearing". I say it like that as it was hardly a clearing and I wasn't impressed when I found it after 40s. Ran hard to 9 but slight off bearing, quickly corrected but lost a few seconds.
Found myself thinking about completely unrelated things going to 10, thankfully still found the opening of the gap into the green without much hesitation. At this point I though I had lost it, and the recognisable chest pains were coming back. Felt slow and heavy going to 10, just missed the hidden root stock. What I didn't know was that I was leading since 9. Pushed on to 12, confusing myself once again with watery eyes from the cold and chest pains. Refocused going to 13, and picked up speed a bit too. Nice route along obvious paths right into the pit, made the long leg less scary. Orange control 14 and another long one to 15. Not happy with my route at all, as I though I was going to hit the track when I was running parallel, and as I climbed the hill I almost had to stop from tiredness. However, must've been running well as I got best split.
Brilliant picture when I saw Samuel G at 15. I nipped in front of him and he kept right on my tail, pushing me on. It didn't matter that we messed up 16 because I found my energy coming back again. Looked at my watch and saw a good time in sight. Hard running through the last few, again, a few best splits. Just managed to run in before collapsing in a heap for a few minutes.
Thought my time was pretty awful at the finish, but it turned out to be pretty good - the opposite of yesterday. Won today and overall, but felt slightly undeserved again as I thought my mistakes and lack of speed would cost me when it didn't. Ah well, can't complain.

JK Day 2 - Hambleden - Long - Course 17 - M16A - 8km - 2nd by 15s.
Felt much better this morning, in terms of illness. Arrived there nice and early to get a good look at the fantastic run in and to see what a winner's time might be. Was thinking the 55mins posted by the Swede at the start would be a good target and later effected me on the course.
Possibly wasn't as focused today as yesterday. Respected the change in direction to number one and got it fine, but then treated number 2 as if it was Scottish terrain. Naturally went round the paths and lost 30s+ cautiously approaching it. Realising my mistake, I sped up, I was in 16th at this point, 35s down. Sped up through 3 and 4, the map tricked me as I thought it would be a long downhill leg to 4, but it was a harsh climb instead. Appeared on the track to far left than I had planned but noticing the field was accessible, I changed plan and cut through it.
Steady on through for the next few, running slightly awkwardly on the slop. Also ended up to high at 6, another few seconds off. Having learned from 2, I chose straight routes rather than path. Missed 8 a bit stupidly, although I don't agree with the map's veg. boundary. Felt really knackered going through 9 and 10, had chest pains like the day before and running was reduced to 5min/km. Running to 11 I was delighted with the long leg ahead, although disappointed at the lack of route choice.
Obvious route down the track and then cut off at around the same height as the control. Countoured round and ended up just below it. A few seconds wasted frantically tearing up ground searching for it. Very pleased with 13 as I knocked 20s off many peoples' times. Had planned to go above both enclosures but as I hit the hill, I decided to veer off right in search for the gap. Kept my height through the field and began to feel some energy coming back to me along the track. Took it really easy to 14 and the rest as I didn't want to lose it. Checked my time going to 13 and noticed that I was going to smash the Swede's time, possibly relaxed a bit after that. A few best splits as some energy appeared and finished cleanly and over the moon.
I don't know if it was the adrenaline, but I thought I had had the run of my life. When I realised that Ali was just behind me, I began to remember my struggle with speed and few mistakes. In the end I lost 80s with mistakes and a few seconds with speed. Tim finished 15s ahead of me, which is ridiculously close for a ridiculously fast race.

JK Sprint - Reading Uni - M16 - 2.0km - 1st by 8 seconds
Slightly unprepared as my start time seemed to appear out of no where. Nevertheless managed to focus and have a good race. Cold was there so speed was limited to an extent.
Clean and fast to 1, but as I pulled my hand off the control my Emit slipped off so frantically had to grab it and put it on again. Nicely through 2, Longer route choice on 3, as I came to an uncrossable garden bit and almost followed a lady over the OOB. Stopped myself and quickly found the next best route. Had to check the side of the fence at 4, even though it would've been obvious. Nicely through 5, 6, 7, all easy orienteering. Found a good passage into 8, almost ran through the OOB at 9 but once again stopped myself. - there was a marshall who watched a boy run straight through the field and didn't lift a finger..- luckily I didn't follow this kid but it's worrying that I would've gotten away with it - same with #3.
Took a long route to 10, almost to clear my head and to plan a bit more. Hesitated just after 10 to check what side of the building it was actually on, saved me a big mistake. Good route in and out of 11 and 12. Then the obvious choice to 13. Began to get very tired from my cold and had pretty bad chest pains at this point, managed to hold it till the end though. However, I was getting best splits at this point so it can't have been too bad. Getting sleep at 14 and going through 15 I didn't punch the control fully. Realised this after exitting the control and wasted 10s going back again - could've been it.
My win felt slightly undeserved, as there were 5+ others capable of beating that time but didn't as they had messed up. Still happy to have won but could've run harder without the cold.

5 x (30s, 30s, 60s) with rep time recoveries.
Following Coach Oleg's advice, I managed to push myself out the house to do this. Felt like all leg muscles were aching but loosened off a bit after the WU. Felt great doing the actualy reps, my watch wasn't quick enough with the pace, 30s wasn't enough time to get down to my actualy pace, but I did the minutes at 3:10-20 so probably about 3:00 for the 30s. Good considering the recent cold. Leg turnover wasn't too good. Felt like the recoveries were too short but I ended on a high doing the last minute rep at 3:09.

WD, made sure I focused on the sore bits and rolled them good too, will do some more later. For once I felt that the rolling actually worked.
Followed by a freezing cold bath, got into some wierd stages of shivering, had to eat to keep my mind of it. Eventually stopped shivering and realised it was because the entire lower half of my body was numb. I'm sure water gets colder in the winter. Burrrrr.

Started at Bridge o dee and went up through Torry to Kincorth hill. Had an orienteering map with me so picked off a few very easy control whilst we lapped around the hill. Took a few terrain routes and at a few points, broke off with Alex M to do a hard run round an extra loop. Got pretty dark so we headed back. Did more than I expected, also glad we weren't doing intervals as my legs were still a bit iffy, much better than yesterday though.

Decided not to do the parkrun. Got there and attempted a warm up but walking was even a task with the 50mph gusting winds and cold. So went a bit inland to the uni campus and ran some old courses. Did this one at steady pace. Feeling confident especially at fast-pace navigation. Running felt good too. Haven't orienteered on the map for at least 4 years so it was great treating it as unknown. Few small slips, bits where the buildings have changed too.

Was going to do this tomorrow but since I didn't do the Parkrun and the Balmedie training was cancelled, dad and me decided to head out to Scolty. I noticed how much snow there was yesterday so we thought it would be better than driving to the clash. Felt great skiing, especially going up hill, for some reason it was more relaxing than flat or downhill. Speed was a lot higher than what I did earlier this year, probably because dad was pushing me on. Got up to the higher tracks in Blackhall where there was 1 to 2 feet of untouched powder on the tracks, a real winter wonderland too. Ran in to a few bits where the cover was thin but no need to unclip ever until the end where we chose to go on a rubbish rocky path. Downhill on the way back was terrifying, fell once when Aflie got in the way and cut open my knee - luckily that was the only fall. Luxury Training, might go tomorrow too.

Begged my teacher to let me out in the snow, glad I did. Headed over to Scolty, reached the forest and ran about 4k in foot deep snow between the trees. Very pleasant, as it was just gliding through powder with the occasional trip from a buried branch or something. Snowing and windy but it was pretty sheltered. Tracks were completely covered so probably do some x-country skiing there on sunday as orienteering is cancelled.
Parkrun tomorrow - although gale force winds expected so might treat it as a speed session (hopefully winds will be from the side rather than in my face) Training in storm-bound Balmedie after.

Feeling a lot better today. Started easy on grass and paths, and gradually swapped to road back home. Ankles and feet were sore on paths from bending around in every direction, but became fine as I went on to flatter stuff. Running strongly by the end, happily, and focused on technique before going tempo to finish. Possibly to long for recovering, but it was a lot better than doing intervals and destroying my legs again. Calve still a bit tight butvsome aches were expected after a long rest period.

SOL 2 - The Trossachs - Blue - 4.5k - 320m climb - 2nd by 27s
Incredible area, course and race. Woke up and the legs were still achy from my cold, but I was definitely up for this. Did quite a lot of geeking on past courses to set up for this mentally - didn't want to recreate the 20min mistake of 2010.
Started up the hill, shattered by 200m, but pushed it. Possibly started climbing a bit late as I found myself underneath it, possibly a better route though. Nice run back down to 2 almost followed the stream in the wrong direction thinking it was my marsh, but caught myself and pushed it back up the hill to 2, dipped in perfectly. Began to plan ahead early for 3, and there was an obvious route. Got it cleanly, however even walking up the slopes was awful, slow but steady. Checked out the exit strategy as I entered 3 and cleanly flowed through.
Nice "follow the stream" leg to 4, which was more like a gorge run. Decided before the last hill that I was too low but upon climbing the hill I was too high, not too bad. Chose a sneaky route to 5, avoiding a not needed climb, but almost fell to my doom off a cliff, saved myself in time. Ended up on the wrong side of the hill, and didn't see it, few seconds wasted. Chased Josh for the next control, as he had a similar leg. Good line and dipped in.
7 was my leg. I had it planned and took a nice line in. Bit slow contouring and climbing the final hill, but got it bang on. 8 onwards was a bit messy. On 8, I stuck too high, thinking I'd regret losing height, but ended up 5 contours too high in a boulder field, and wasted some time carefully descending. 9 was a blunder. Did some actual running leading up to it, terrain was nice and hill wasn't too steep. Got to the control circle fine but read the hill as being the next one over, covered by the "9". Should have realised the cliff was sourrounded by green but I spent to minutes goofing around before noticing and saving myself a big mistake.
Almost did a classic double mistake to 10 but spent about a minute relocating a few times at the bottom of the unnoticeable green re-entrant. Felt bad losing some much height only to climb it again and lose most of it, but I think going round would be too slow. Downhill legs to 11 and 12, both alright, although I was on top of the 3m crag at 11 and had to climb it down. Thought it was easy going from there but I was on the wrong hill at 13, probably cost me the win. Also chose an odd line to the finish, meeting some fallen trees.
Very happy with the run. Although Andrew Barr got me by 27 seconds, he claimed to have had a good run so happy to have done a time so close to his. Noticeably if all the scotjos second year 16s would have had a clean run, we'd all be getting 48, so there really isn't much splitting us apart from navigation. If I was a bit braver descending crags and slopes, and if I wasn't recovering, I think I could have knocked a couple of minutes off too. Navigation good but failed to keep my focus at 9 and 10, I think I should have realise only crags over 3m were really mapped, and I wouldn't of fooled around in the area of small crags at 9.
http://www.obasen.nu/winsplits/online/en/default.a... - 2.5min down on 9 and 1min on 10, losing time towards the end - Matt's streak is incredible.

Nice little area, very similair to Devilla, so very fast. Still a bit ill today but refused to miss the weekend. Started head in the game bolting it round the first loop, using up the energy I had saved last week. Met callum at 1 going to 5 and realised if I did the loop in under 8 minutes I'd be beating him. So ran the first 5 hard, and cleanly, and got to the same point in 6.30, so I knew I was beating him. Safe choice to 6, although my speed was really lacking. Even worse to 7, calves, achilies and feet were aching from turning over, just because I've been out for a week.
Wee 15s slip to 8 and then slow on 9, still suffering. Got a bit better after 10, another 10s slip, and chose the fastest route to 11, beginning to feel a lot better but 20s down on daniel on that 5min leg. Wasted maybe 10s unsure in the circle but caught it up going to 12. Long way round to 13, being safe, but could've been quicker the shorter way round. Last easy controls and finished feeling good again.
Happy to have won, although a 2min quicker time could've been possible before I got ill. Other 16s running faster than me on the long legs so goal for JK is simply to get my fitness up to where it was before. Kept the two swedes down off the top, although I'm not sure how they found it. Bring on the beast that is the trossachs tomorrow.

Chose not to train today, as the cold is really going now... there'll be something remaining (probably a cough) for a while but I think I can ignore it and run, if not race, this weekend. Short distances yet the trossach's will be challenging, especially in some forcasted snow.

Getting ridiculous, not getting any better at all. I'm fine with all the school work but beginning to feel lazy with no training. Probably go for a run tomorrow no matter if I feel better or not. Luckily didn't even get an entry for the xc, as I would've been annoyed if I wasn't ill. Will definitely go to the weekend's events as there's no excuse to miss the trossachs.

Metro Aberdeen - Hazlehead Intervals.
Finished my Tempo and had missed the first two 300ms, so did them at the end instead. 2x400m, 5x500m, 2x400m, 4x300m. 3/400m had 100m recovery. 500m had 1 minute rest.
Very hard session, had the wind in my face down the hill, and a struggle up the hill because I was pretty tired from the tempo up. Times were slow but was running hard and happy with the last 300m. As usual, every second rep was uphill.

Really good session. Running further than before and feeling very comfortable. Ground was dry so mud wasn't a problem. Pain in heel has disappeared, panic over. Leading with Stuart the whole way. Did an extra minute rep at the end with Stuart and Willy, at under 3min/km. Stuart claimed it was good psychologically.

SOL 1 - Gullane Dunes - Blue - 6.2km, 225m climb - (don't believe that)
Such a challenging area, both physically and technically. Heel was a lot better this morning and I was keen to set a good time to introduce the season.
Started pretty focused and was good to not be thrown off by a short leg to 1, and 2. Took a slightly longer route to 3, apparently it was faster along the beach, but I had the advantage of checking out the last few controls on the way. Dipped down and got it then followed the wrong path out to 4. This eventually disappeared and I was fighting thick bush to find the path. Eventually got it but could have wasted something like a minute.
Good flow through 5 and 6, very Portuguese style forest. Found a control before 7, luckily remembered the code and found the right control (very close by through). Long leg to 8 was generally ok. I was leading a guy along the path until I cut the corner, and he carried on round. We rejoined at the junction together, so there was no difference in routes, but I was knackered from fighting through all the high marram grass. This continued until 21, it was awful to run in.
Anyway, ran off from my follower before 8 and flowed through to 9 and 10 smoothly. 11 was good with a ditch leading me straight in. Mixed up the hills on the way to 12 and was about to look a bit early when I spotted it a bit further on, potential mistake averted. I realised when I found 12 that the only time I could know for sure where I was on this map, especially at race pace, was at every control site, and from then on I took a bigger advantage of this. This led to some good nav into 13 and 14, catching up Briony. Soon overtaken and through 15 and 16 no problem.
Remembering how bad the grass was, I pathed it halfway to 17 but then cut a corner. Bad choice as it was hard running once again. Possibly the path route would have been quicker to 18 but I pretty much went straight and landed right on it. Pathed it to 19, and planned ahead. Seeing many path routes I knew I could gain time on a potential leader by running harder. Easily through 20 and 21 and out the horrible grass. Bad route choice to 22, thought the fence was a path and there was no way of cutting through the thick impenetrable bush, so had to go round a longer way. Eventually got it, (remembered it from the route to 13, as well as the next control).
Then a real nightmare started. It was fine getting to 23, but I remembered a cheeky path cutting through the green that wasn't on the map. Thinking I had found this path I ran into the middle of the green, where the path ended. Picturing a shameful run back on myself, I spurred on fighting the prickly impenetrable stuff. Absolutely shredded my arms, bare shins, and hands but I made it out eventually, wasting 1.5mins, with a walker worryingly watching me through.
After laughing at the defeat of the "impenetrable green", I ran on, bleeding everywhere with, open cuts mixing with some stinking dodgy berries that grew on the bush. Only actual technical mistake was one of the easiest controls, 25, where I was just so knackered I forgot to navigate. Lost maybe half a minute being hesitant but thankfully finished after that.
Surprisingly won today, with quite a nice margin ahead of Matt. At least it was worth the struggle to 24. 40 minutes would have been good but the fact that my run was almost clean means that maybe it wasn't achievable. The rest made technical mistakes, where as I just got stuck in a few bushes for a bit, so that's probably my reason to have won. Some bad route choices, and that slip at 25 was unforgivable, but generally really pleased with the navigating. Got home after taking out 5-10 thorns with some still in place on the bus journey. Had a shower and ran out screaming like a girl with all the cuts. Stood outside to cool down. Rest tomorrow, and maybe tuesday if my heel is still painful, but generally an easy week anyway.
http://www.obasen.nu/winsplits/online/en/default.a... - seeing the splits I was clearly tired, losing a bit of time on the running legs. At least my navigation was good

Heel feeling a bit iffy, so ran in my trailrocs, thinking it's just bruising. Good few little exercises but nothing too hard. WU, cutting corners, short course, friendship relay plus a run around with the boys.

Long Run
Split into two parts. First part was during p.e, had to report back once the lesson had finished, so had a 5 min break and went off again up Scolty for part 2.
Part 1, big loop of hill of Banchory, mostly road or solid track, ended up at the entrance to Crathes and went along the river and railway back to the school. Feeling fast and up for a second part at the end. Weather was perfect, sunny and about 7c.

Long Run
Part 2. Set off down through the park and up the road to Scolty, calves quite tight from the break. From the car park down the southern path and up Scolty from the south through the Kissing gate. Touched the tower and ran straight through the heather down towards the path that runs parallel to the slope heading towards Hill of Goach.
Up the cycle track that runs along the open area, feeling very heavy here, but eventually reached the highest point. From here I found a new path linking the bike path to the conjoining path which was useful, felt a lot better once the climb had stopped. Sped up going back over Scolty as I had to get to the bike shop by 5. Touched the tower after a generally easy climb, and went down the main tourist path.
Now the hard bit started. Stood on a sharp rock and suddenly felt a sharp pain in my heel. Managed to ignore it to the bottom, but I decided to stop and assess it's condition. Felt like a stick had gone through my foot into my heel but there was nothing there, it just hurt to put pressure on it. So ran carefully back, passing the bike shop just in time, trying to put as much pressure on my toes as I could, which worked well.
Got home later and took off my shoes and all the support from my socks and tried stepping on it. Sharp pain every time I put pressure onto it. Hot bath, ice, no change. I believe a good nights sleep can get rid of this one but I'm genuinely worried that it could be something bad.
Apart from that it was a wonderful run in some wonderful weather and wonderful scenery. The temp was spot on and the views were stunning. Even after a hard week I was feeling great, but not going to do something like this for a while, last hard week before JK. Just hope that my right heel won't stand in my way.
