After going through it, it appears that my major mistakes (not counting time that could be lost to slow route choices) were due to getting stuck in green and letting myself be pushed off my bearing. I'll need to get back to practicing assertiveness through green.

Really happy with how well I executed 19-20. I took 10 or 12 seconds after punching 19 to read the entire leg, assess my options, and then I flew through it since I knew exactly what I had to do. Yeah, that was good.

So mixed results this weekend.

Surprise, surprise, when I'm coming off a break, I'm not in my best shape. That's fine by me. This championship was scheduled after I had already set my training cycles and I really needed a break after this summer.

Positive stuff to take away:

-First time actually in Indiana and Michigan.
-First time orienteering in Indiana and Michigan.
-Finally got to orienteer in SMOC terrain which I've been wanting to get into for a while now.
-Had loads of fun and got to connect with some juniors I don't see too often.

Thanks to everyone involved in organizing!

I'll post maps and some summaries in a bit. But first I've got to focus on getting back home and putting the final touches on the Harriman O-Fest!

I've also scheduled a trip for the second week of November to Canada to visit a Spanish friend who's been living in Toronto. This will be my last trip this year to disconnect from orienteering before we jump into the coming season. Wooooo!

Got a decent price on Amtrak for a train to Toledo. Trying to figure out why I don't do this more often.

Note

So an update on life.

It looks pretty likely at this point that I'll be moving to Stroudsburg, PA, right in the foothills of the Poconos. There are loads of reasons to move there: reasonably priced, fairly convenient location, loads of woods, cool college town, etc.

I'll have a roommate who's an adventure racer and we're looking for houses with plenty of space to host juniors and other athletes/orienteers.

To that end, I've been pretty busy with KP.

Here's an image showing the maps I've currently got within a 45 minute drive of Stroudsburg (only 3 stars are human-made maps)

And there's still loads to go, even more so now that I've figured out the NJ data.

Now, I know KP is not a human-made map. But it's not bad when I try to add in as much data as I can.

I've been working with bare-ground hillshade images to get some more trails, streams, and other sundry items.

For a comparison, here's a bit of DVOA's spectacular Adam's Creek map compared with what I've been able to make with KP, OSM data, and hillshading:

I've got a bit of work left to do, especially with the cliffs. But it ain't bad!

It's also allowed me to map some pretty cool areas. Like this one on the NJ side of the DWG:

There's also Whittingham and Allamuchy which I previously posted. And roughly 300km2 more that I've been able to map so far.

So certainly not at the quality of a human-made map, but getting pretty good. And I did it for free, which is pretty nice too.

So the thing is, it'll be great for me to live there. But how can I get the community to benefit from this?

Will building a training culture there have the "if you build it, they will come" effect?

Perhaps the best thing to do is just organize training camps? Or frequent informal sessions?

I know that going in this direction can't be a bad thing since, ultimately, we're all looking to enjoy ourselves in this sport. But my question remains the same: can this benefit the community at-large? Does it have to?

Originally I was looking into committing to a house in this area, but it seems important to see where the community is with this before taking any further steps. It also seems important to see where I am and how far I'd be willing/able to take it.
