Luis and I drew a course on the print out of this map and took turns leading. The person leading had to tell the one following what the plan for each leg was. It helped me focus. More accountability

I ran at 85% today to make sure my body is ready for the coming week. The focus was placed on proper technical execution. I ran 2 minutes faster than in January. Of course, I remembered certain parts of the course.

Only had a about an hour for this, but I had a lot of fun. Harriman is such great terrain to enjoy orienteering. Need to focus even more on the exits from the controls and taking bearings quickly.

Wanted to do a rerun of a nearby course from 2009. I took off the trails to make it a bit more difficult, but did take a few trails when they were there. The western half of the park is beautifully open, but that's because it's extremely overpopulated with deer. I estimated at least 25 in the western part. I had to stop at a few controls or skip some (14 and 18) because there were too many deer around them. I had to stop a few times so I wouldn't send them into traffic on the roads around the park. A distraction that made the course much less fun.

Running race 42:34 [5] 9.96 km (4:16 / km) +260m 3:47 / km

Time Trial of the Wiss Trail Classic Course. I was considering doing it twice, but my body still needs a bit more recovery.

Definitely had the weather on my side today. Cool (9°C) and partly cloudy. The other trail users weren't helping me out. I had to pass a church group of about 80 kids and a few adults who found a way to take up the entire trail and slow down for lots of dog walkers whose friendly dogs were strangely aggressive. Oh well. Hazards of going out your door.

Running 1:15:00 [3] 13.5 km (5:33 / km) +200m 5:10 / km

Out in the Andorra section of the park. The leaves are only starting to change here. Seems quite late

Running 1:15:00 [3] 13.0 km (5:46 / km) +250m 5:16 / km

Legs pretty heavy still. Another recovery day will be nice.

Got two things stuck in each eye within 4 minutes. Forgot to start my watch after the second time, but I did go to five.

The goal was not to run too quickly, but rather focus on good orienteering. I think I did that on everything except 15. Not bad, but could do better.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2] 3.0 km (6:40 / km)

Pretty fun. Really thick green. There was a hunter at #12 waiting for a deer to go past. So that's where my course ended.

Beautiful open forest. I had Hugh Cashell along for the course. Scared him beforehand warning him about the green Pennsylvania forests, but we were both pleasantly suprised at how nice this forest was. It's refreshing to have woods that don't beat you up.

Orienteering 1:23:06 intensity: (23:06 @2) + (1:00:00 @3) *** 9.04 km (9:11 / km) +300m 7:53 / km

Great control pick exercise. Saw a bear at #9 and it headed toward my #10. So I decided to skip that loop. Unfortunately after that I struggled to focus; every rustle in the leaves was another bear waiting for me. In some senses it was good because I had to push those thoughts out of my head.

Another tired and relatively unfocused day, but better than yesterday. Main mistake was leaving 13 thinking I was at 14. I didn't lose as much time as I thought all things considered (3:30-:40). But still, I need to have more focus.

The weekend's fatigue came to a head here, both mentally and physically. Took 15 seconds to stop and refocus at 7 and then called it a day once I proved I wasn't thinking on the way to 15. Really looking forward to getting back to this map.

A stop at Paugussett to break up the drive between Philly and Boston. So. much. traffic.

Legs were pretty shot from the hill intervals. Tough to do the uphills. Absolutely beautiful forest. Really happy to get out there.

7 PM

Orienteering 25:33 [4] 5.72 km (4:28 / km) +251m 3:40 / km

Evening session at Tufts set up by Becky. Our guiding rule was "the grass is lava" which made for some interesting route choices.

It's been a while since I've done sprint stuff. Really fun to get back to it.

Running 25:00 [3] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

Warming up and then cooling down with Viol and getting very lost.

5 PM

Running 1:24:48 [4] 12.62 km (6:43 / km) +585m 5:27 / km

Hill reps in the Wiss. The goal was to mix short and high intensity intervals with longer, medium intensity intervals.

I started a bit too strong and was hurting toward the end. I've got no problem with going to the well.

Note

So, not many people from the US Team were able to fully commit to the training camps I'm organizing at Burnt Mtn. and the Water Gap.

But I'm still going to train. And anyone who wants to join is more than welcome. I'll print 10 to 15 maps depending on the response.

Here's the plan for this weekend at the Boulder Dash.

Saturday

Morning: Boulder Dash courses
Afternoon: Downhill course at Storr's Pond starting between 3:30 and 4 p.m.

Sunday

Morning: Boulder Dash courses
Afternoon: Middle on Burnt Mtn starting after 3 p.m.

Downhill course is 4.5km with an option for 2.9km. 1:10,000

Middle is 4.8km with an option for 2.8km. 1:7,500.

Let me know if you'd like to join!

Running 1:10:00 [3] 13.0 km (5:23 / km) +360m 4:44 / km

12 AM

Running 2:30:03 [3] 27.0 km (5:33 / km) +680m 4:56 / km

Night time long run in the Wiss. The GPS lost signal a couple of times and said I ran 32k. But I wasn't moving that fast. Not tons of climb, but my legs are pretty tired at any rate. The trails here do tire you out.

Just checked my track. I'm in great shape.

Orienteering 55:45 [4] **** 6.51 km (8:33 / km) +293m 6:59 / km

Had an opaque map and a transparent map with me just in case I needed to bail to a trail. I'm glad I did because, as was the theme for this camp, this forest was much more difficult than I remember. I need to adjust the courses I design here for this fact. The terrain is fantastic, very low visibility and difficult running; but I can't design courses the same as I would in Spain.

So, this was a short, tough camp, but it fulfilled its purpose. I wanted to get a feel for the terrain in the Water Gap again. And I am very happy with what we have up there.

I also wanted to test out my sleeping arrangement for car camping: very comfortable. I'm going to be traveling so often that I don't want to waste money on hotel rooms constantly. So, I've found a way to sleep very comfortably in my car and live out of it for at least a few days before feeling like I'm roughing it.

Wow! Most of that white is NOT white anymore. Also, there are quite a few missing stone walls/rocky ground, like around 3 and 11. I'll have to adjust how I set courses here.

After a tip by Eric W. about this map getting thicker over the past several years, I decided to go and see for myself. WHOA! Most of the smaller trails are hardly noticeable and everything is considerably thicker. The coniferous forests are still pristine, but everything else has terrible runnability and visibility. It beat me today because I wasn't prepared for it. But this will be a great training ground for Latvia. Also, props to all the NA ladies for running this course, particularly AliC for a beastly time.

Got stung by a wasp when I was leaving 11, which explains why I spaced on going to 12. Was running low on light so I had to call it a day.

Hiking 30:00 [3] 2.5 km (12:00 / km)

Needed to shake out my legs.

Just scoped the Classic Champs registration list and saw that Johan Bäckman is registered. Between him and my Spanish friend Luis, I've got my objective.

Hudson Highlander, 1st.

So, this is the first Highlander I've ever run. And I was very happy to be back in these woods during my favorite season.

I wasn't sure how bad the mountain laurel would be. So I avoided it initially, but it seems that it's gotten better over the years. You have to slow down, but you can get through it.

The blueberry has, however, gotten considerably worsen, particularly on top of Rockhouse.

The legs held up pretty well until about 22. That's when my traditional hamstring cramps started. I had to stop several times to stretch out my legs. I'm happy this happened though, because it means I can train it. I haven't always been able to recreate this in Spain because the terrain is often so open that I don't have to lift my legs as much. Not here though.

A few errors here and there when I lost focus, but not loads of time.

I was really happy to share the podium with my Spanish friends and Evalin. It's great to see them out there.
