Note

I didn't race as well as I know I can today in Poland. I'm not giving up, just gonna keep working harder & smarter at it!

World Cup Middle in Wroclaw, Poland.

Not a very good race. Ultimately my nerves got the best of me.

Error time: 11:07

Errors:
-Going off bearing in the green.
-Not finding the control when right next to it.

Causes:
-For all of it: nerves and panic.

Solutions:
-Put myself in high pressure situations like this more. I know I can run a race like this much, much faster than what I did.

I did race in Portugal this past weekend, I just haven't had time to update my log. I'm leaving for Poland tomorrow morning. Maybe I'll find time in the coming days. If not, see everyone next week!

Note

This weekend I was able to confirm where I'll be living over the summer. I'll be renting out Alberto's cabin in Peguerinos, a mountain town about an hour fifteen from Madrid. The cabin is at 1,400 meters elevation and is right next to one of Madrid's best maps. Apparently the highs there get up to about 35 celsius over the summer. Better than Madrid's 43 that I dealt with last summer. And it will actually cool down over night! Very excited.

Part of the Long at the CIFO

The plan here was to drop out anyway in preparation for the World Cup.

Dropped out at 17, but up til then it wasn't going all that well.

My problem was a big mistake on number 10 which left me with very little motivation for the rest of the course. I wasn't willing to fight through the green with the energy you need to get through it.

Not much analysis needed here, just the simple fact that if you're not ready to fight for it, then you're not ready to race.

Orienteering 49:05 [4] ***** 4.5 km (10:54 / km) +280m 8:19 / km

Middle distance at the CIFO

A bad race for what I know I can do. The amount of rocks and how large they were was simply amazing.

No race analysis :(

But I do have the map.

http://cifo2016.ori-estarreja.pt/index.php/es/mapa...

My largest mistake was due to the aid station on the way to three. They were parked east of the line instead of west of it. I trusted in this too much and paid for it ultimately with a big mistake on three.

Workout Wednesday

Workout was 4x10mins@T on 2 min recovery

I was joined by Luisma and Manu on this workout. It was great to have others with me. The first 10 minutes were on muddy trails on a slight uphill, then after that we went straight through the forest. Casa de Campo isn't a really difficult forest to run through, but it is still off-trail. It also started pouring while we were out there. Just made it more fun.

Distances in 10 min.:
#1--2.8 (37 meters uphill)
#2--2.35 (forest)
#3--2.5 (forest with muddy trails)
#4--2.7 (very muddy trails)

Good to get a mixed terrain workout in.

Awesome map. Very few times could you relax. A big mistake on three took me out of the game. I was right next to it also!

Error time: 3:12

Errors:
-Same as always running too fast for my navigation.

Solutions:

Trofeo de la Serranía de Cuenca

Fun race. Awesome terrain. Good courses.
Here's a fly-over of the map:
https://youtu.be/ODl-qPGmAAs

I spaced and didn't punch 17, so officially I didn't finish. I did run right past it. My best guess is that I was less focused because I only slept four and a half hours. I was one of the coaches for the Madrid school team, so I had to leave extra early with the young'uns.

I also followed the advice of my coach and took the first control hard and then eased back for the rest of the race until the final K.

Error time: 2:58

Errors:
-Going off bearing.
-Misreading the cliffs when I was running down into them.

Causes:
-Loss of focus
-When you're above the cliffs there aren't as many details as below them. This means it's easier to lose map contact.

Solutions:
-Run at a pace that you find your flow.
-Areas with lots of details can be more helpful than areas lacking details, so long as you can simplify and filter out the noise on the map.

Trofeo de la Serranía de Cuenca "Sprint"

This was a mass start sprint. It was raining really, really hard. I was tempted to do a Braveheart speech on the starting line, but I decided that most people wouldn't get the reference and I would just look like a weird guy yelling in English.

My forking had me with Andreu most of the way. I tried to overtake him a few times, but Andreu is not one to let people pass him. So I stayed behind and focused on my navigation. Even so I overran a few controls which left me in fourth place. Still not bad.

Error time: 0:38

Errors:
-Overrunning controls or going of bearing

Causes:
Running faster than my navigation could keep up with.

Solutions:

Casa de Campo Night-O

So Luisma, who goes by the name of Indomitus Indo on this website, had the idea of running a long night-o in CDC midweek with a mass start and forking to help those who are going to Tiomila better prepare.

I signed up to set the course with the hybrid new-old map of CDC. Basically we hid the contours on the old map and replaced them with contours which we generated in Karttapullautin. It worked quite well. Unfortunately it's difficult to make the two versions match up perfectly. Still it made for an interesting race.

Since it was a mass start, the 2d rerun actually matches our positions as we were competing. Only four of us have uploaded our GPXs to 3d rerun, but there were about ten of us competing. And we were rolling fast. On the long leg to ten I was going at about 3:45-:50/K. Boom!

Error time: 0:45

Errors:
-Overrunning number 1
-Wandering towards 12 without confidence

Causes:
-The whole pack ran past 1. Even though I was reading and trying to relate it to the terrain, I trusted less in myself and more in the pack.
-I exited the river--which was a relatively difficult crossing--without tons of confidence. I continued running this way before confirming my location.

Solutions:
-Bubble. I've gotta trust myself. The pack is not flawless. In fact, it may be even more prone to errors.
-Take ten seconds confirm your location, and then run confidently--and quickly--towards the control.

2d rerun (my forking wasn't on here, but it looks good anyway):

The plan this weekend was for a long O course in the mountains, however in light of how I felt yesterday I decided to go for a long run in Casa de Campo with Rorri and Cosme (and Raico). I felt strong here and was able to recover some of that strong athlete feeling which was missing yesterday.

It's also nice to have extra time to do errands that have been pending for a while now.

Orienteering 36:34 [3] *** 4.7 km (7:47 / km) +150m 6:43 / km
spiked:18/21c

Legs not feeling very good today. Gonna drink a lot of water and sleep a lot to prepare for tomorrow. I was unfortunately never able to pick up the pace. I suppose my training during the week was more difficult than I expected. #13 was misplaced.

Error time: 2:00

Errors:
-Running past #5.
-Going off bearing.
-Not spiking controls.

Causes:
-For 5, I navigated quite well going in. Everything made sense. I saw the cliff and knew it was mine. Jumped off it to where I expected the streamer to be... and didn't see it. Immediately lost confidence and went to check a lower cliff, which didn't fit what I saw on the map, but was another option. Once there I turned around and saw the streamer. Damn.
-I go off bearing when I'm tired. It's one of the times I lose focus.
-Didn't spike the controls because I didn't always check the description. I always got the correct rock or cliff, but I didn't know which side it was on. Lost about 5 seconds a few times because of that.

Solutions:
-If I've navigated well, then I have to trust that I'm in the right spot. Check the description and the area before running away to check another possible area. Confidence.
-When I'm tired and the leg calls for taking a bearing. Focus on that task and only that task. This is true for the rest of races also.
-You're given a description for a reason. It might take a little longer to open the map, but it'll save you time when you're there.

Orienteering 48:30 [3] ** 7.4 km (6:33 / km) +135m 6:00 / km

Middle course from O travel in Peguerinos.

My legs were feeling very, very heavy during this. I wasn't really ready for a course like with long, open legs that were more about holding your direction at speed than precise navigation. Misread the area around three and screwed it up. Apart from that everything was easy peasy, navigationally speaking.

Inaugural Mad Goat in Madrid!

Only three starters this round, but hopefully we'll get a few more in the future. Hablo de ti Luisma ;)

This Goat has one control skip and one leg split.

At any rate, pretty fast course. My body couldn't push too hard after number 12. I suppose I had done about 19k by that point.

Decided to skip 18, feel pretty confident about my choice,

Only one significant error. I got turned around in the thick green at number 8. Also, the wall around the private property was not there. So I went in and didn't realize it.

OCAD didn't let me export the map with the leg split, so I had to do a crappy job in Paint. Oh well, it shows where the point was.

Errors:

Causes:

It looks like there's a lot less detail on the old section, but the terrain is about the same. The only difference is the mapping.
