orienteering 51:58 [4] 6.9 km (7:32 / km)
20c
Raseborg's Vårtävling
Course length 6.9, ran 7.8 km or so.
Mixture of good and not so good. No hugely punishing mistakes, but could have been maybe two minutes faster?
This high-vis avokallio stuff no longer scares me. Which means I need to get fitter. Very fun orienteering!
To the second-last control I ran into a branch while running across the rock. Thankfully it broke, head got a bit shook but it didn't stop me.
1 - ok, had to stop to look at the map a few times. Print quality was lacking.
2 - now I understand what I did, wasn't too far from good, but lost maybe 20s, caught by the bald guy who started a minute behind
3 - different routes, arrived the same time and both made a little swing into the control
4 - barely had enough information, but spiked, bald guy was high, but ahead of me by the time I'd figured route to 5, and we caught two others here too
5 - good. group tried leading me down the spur before the control, I resisted, spike.
6 - trying to push to make a gap, slopy rock was helvettin liukasta (in the words of Ville), so I didn't climb the hill, mistake, instead running around the base of the rock, and lower than I thought. 40s? Group caught me as I thought about route to 7.
7- I went left along the road and then along the base of the hills, 9 mins to 6mins fastest, so I guess straight was faster. Clean woods, and easy enough, so my route being simpler didn't matter. Oh, lost 15s in the circle too, bald guy arrived same time, and two-minute-behind guy, I think.
8 - see hill, run over hill, punch, leading.
9- direction leaving 8 was a bit off, but I corrected faster than baldy, I think. Anyway, ran straight to 9, couple of people behind me, but saw a tag just left of the ridge and ran to it, for stupidity's sake (I blame print quality here too, I looked a couple of times at the map and was fairly but not entirely sure the invisible marsh was to the right of the ridge). 10s. Now behind again.
10- Stupid, followed bald guy group of two, knew what line we were running on but not enough to know it didn't lead to control, poor. 1min. Eeros caught us here.
11- checked map this time, run down, re-entrant to left, people in front made spiking easy.
12 - stayed a little higher than group, silly, because mini-valley gave the exact height of control, so I ended up glancing at map more than necessary, and followed people into control anyway.
13 - I started behind, punched with the lead, better orienteering.
14 - better here too (I navigated to gap in cliffs), but Eero was a touch faster up the hill, thought description was NE foot of hill, but it was NW, so I followed Eeros' swerve, 4s :)
15 - didn't follow plan, so ended up going up steep hill after a fall and a pause. Group made me start to push again once up for a spike, so only 10s lost maybe in the route/pause.
16 - stayed high momentarily to get the less steep descent, up between the big cliffs, then good direction (yay vis) took me straight to control, though I was hesitant the last few metres. Others punched behind.
17 - another long route-choice pause, then decided to cross swamp where it was thin, seem to have lost 30m or so to the others. Eero sped up here and pulled away. Spiked
18 - just right of the line, didn't have a proper plan, but corrected without really losing time (well, 2s map-reading might have saved 6 or 7 seconds).
19 - branch, spike
20 - where's the tape, where's the tape? and there was a tree or something in the way, so swerved a little, fast running and short distance, anyway.
Finish, 19s, fastest was 15!
So potential to run 2.30 faster on navigation, would be happy with 1.30 faster...
Need to read map better. Need to get fitter.
