orienteering 1:31:38 [3] 11.4 km (8:02 / km)
20c

FinnSpring, Sauvo

H21 A, RG, splits

Not a bad race, though got a bit sloppy towards the end. 6 mins down on Ross M, 20 minutes down on Sergey Detkov. 16 was the only control I was lost on, 17 was also poor, but hampered by crossing a waist-deep icy stream which froze my legs...

and I was tired from 12 on. And navigation wasn't exactly smooth, but damn 1:15 is hard to read.

Note

Rented a van, found a van (eventually), moved apartment (thanks Eikka!), returned van, missed bus, bought bike, cycled to work... all before lunch...

This is an excerpt from a mail I received:
"There's apparently quite a bit of money left for travel on my
grant which should be spent before the end of August, I believe.
So feel free to take advantage of it."

orienteering 48:00 [3] 4.8 km (10:00 / km)
18c

Night training on Talmonmäki. Emit, three people starting every 30s, some loops to split things up.

Very little snow. As far as the 8th control was ok, 9 I made a balls of, can't have been too far off, but at night that's not good enough. Didn't understand the contours there and relocated off 7. I still don't understand the contours there.

Also, I had some trouble avoiding the green, as most of it was grey printed green. Wow. Which meant coming to open areas, mostly rock and few to no trees, I got confused... ... ...
After 9, mistakes or hesitations at almost every control. Well, there was a path direct to 10, and going from 10 back to 11 I just had to run straight at the moon :)

Fun. But I need to improve.

running 50:00 [3]

jog to/from work. Still a bit on the tired side.

Orienteering season may take a long time to come, but when it does, it's relentless. Tomorrow possibilities include : sprint near work around 5pm, training from Solvalla at 6, nighto in Lohja at 9.30, yökuppi in Mantsala at 10.

I have Finnish exam at 6, and have a lift arranged to Lohja afterwards, so that's all I'm doing.

And coming up: FinnSpring 17km on Saturday, relay on Sunday, Irish Champs the weekend after, then Prisma-rastit on the Thursday and more comps that weekend... ... and all along there are midweek pleb events... I'm not sure how to pace myself.

to/from work, legs feeling a bit rough...

Still in awe.

trail run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Nothing afterwards. Just about enough before.

orienteering 1:22:11 [3] 10.5 km (7:50 / km)
20c

Kringelträffen
splits

Hmm.
1. ok, a little hesitant
2. good mostly.
3. veered right, corrected, followed Thierry into control (2 minutes down after he's been running 7:26, not too bad). 15s
4. fast for the first half (strangely) then okay until I went down and off the wrong spur. Wishful thinking. 45s.
5. Should have stayed low longer. 20s. Also lost 10s in the circle, but the angle of the crag wasn't the same as that on the map.
6. 15s, didn't turn right after dropping down before climbing up.
7. Had a hard time running out to path, compass???!!! 40s. Then good. Loooon path/road leg.
8. weird. 1.30
9. 30s -- here I thought I was running along a wee hill, but apparently not. Turned around and JO was punching.
10. Got bored sitting behind JO, so ran up the hill to the top, but was one peak to the right. JO was gone before I came close. 25s
11. Ran down, trying to catch up, didn't see JO until water stop. He was maybe 80m ahead. I think I must have got the control better, because he wasn't far ahead. Decent.
12. Followed after JO for 2/3 of the leg, then he seemed to slow down, so I took the lead. Spike. And fun!
13. I paused at the first path, he overtook. On the bigger path I overtook. Def running a bit faster. I stayed on path past the marsh, bad idea. He punched 2s ahead after going straight.
14. Yay marsh-running. Again, different micro-routechoices, but JO punched just ahead.
15. I thought I had the better route on this short leg, but JO punched ahead just again. Saw an angry Boris on the way out.
16. Pulled a little high by JO coming out, but then (after a rocky stretch I had wanted to avoid) I did my own thing, no probs, came to control 2s after JO, grrr.
17. Then really did my own thing, lost direction in the green, and had a bit of trouble with map-reading, really only had to force my way down to the road, but I went way further right than I ought, 30s. Control was easy after leaving the road.
18. Then what, back up the hill. Saw Boris just behind and JO up ahead. Ran up the hill (except I caught myself walking three paces, bad Neil). Easy enough control, since I'd been close on the previous loop. JO 3s ahead!
19. Nice technical leg, done well. Didn't make up any ground on JO who'd taken the upper route where we couldn't see each other.
20. Meh, poor direction, flow, planning. 15s.
Finish... poor taping, I lost 7s. At least. Should have just gone straight, as the map suggested.

Almost 6 minutes lost out there. Poo. But good fun, and not atrocious for the first "long" of the season.
