Note
Taconic OEC / Moneyhole meet
I put out some remaining controls yesterday, so the usual suspects (George and Betsy and Geof and Liz) had everything under control when I arrived. At some point Jeremy had a busload of inner city (some from Ravenhill was it in Queens?) kids plus a bunch of volunteers arrive. I did the instruction basics, and they split up into groups (one/two leaders plus two/three kids) and went off to do the white course. There were big differences between groups, some incapable of looking at a map and extracting information, others enthusiastic and bright.
Then I was asked to give instruction to another group, five girls in the 8-11 age range, plus three women in their forties/fifties. I asked where the men were :) Girl scouts group. So I started telling them about orienteering and the map and stuff, and the girls started saying they should do it separately and run and whatnot (possibly after some encouragement), but the women were extremely unenthusiastic. I asked who was interested in running, five girls put up their hands, no leaders did. I offered to run around with a couple of them to no avail. I told them the older ones could go on their own (in pairs), that the environment was safe and reasonably controlled, that part of orienteering is about learning independence, and orange-top woman said to the others, this is what being a scout is about. They hummed and hawed, and one went to buy five more maps (2$ each, they only had one map till then), but the negative woman came back without maps, saying it cost more money. I went to Betsy to buy more maps, but Betsy wanted waivers to be signed if they were going to split up (and rightly so), at which point I gave up. I asked if they needed any more info, walked away and watched from a distance. Orange woman was clearly annoyed with the other two for being lame Americans, so at least one had sense. I get mad when people stop kids from having fun for no good reason. Such a contrast with the volunteers bringing out the inner city kids.
I didn't get to check out the ropes course or the kayaking, saw a bit of the birds show which was cool. Mairéad appeared to have been vomited on by a turkey vulture.
Jeremy took in my controls which was nice of him, which meant I was free to attend the agm, and then the board meeting. Not a whole lot happened, but the club kept ticking. Not many people were there.
When I attended the AGM in 2002, there were a bunch more people and I think it was a Tuesday night in Jersey, no orienteering involved.
