Note

Didn't have milk in the flat (and still don't) so breakfast was eggs and cheese and tomatoes and a cracker or two, which was fine for a morning spent standing around outside. Had a couple of apples and biscuits after finishing, and the Thai was good but not particularly substantial, so by this evening the hunger was on me. Three 6oz Hemlock Hill burgers with melted Ecuadorian cheese and a couple of potatoes and tomatoes seem to have done the trick. Yummy.

Note

This email came from one of the local park managers, I think there's a lot of interest in it.

Dear %%% -

Thank you so much for getting back to us so quickly and putting us in touch with all the right people. %%%% is a private foundation who is charged with land preservation and enrichment. We are then to use that land for the education of the public. To this end %%%%% develops and teaches it's programs to scout and school groups and is used by local garden clubs. There are also some bridal trails through the sancutary as well. In the past year we have developed a program for orienteering for children and a related program, wilderness navigation basic and advanced, that we hope to train local law enforcement with. This need has been prompted by hikers getting lost in our and other preserves. The number of hikers getting lost increases each year. In order to promote Orienteering and Wilderness navigation programs we thought a meet would be good idea.

You very much have this down to a science and we would love to follow your lead on all of this. The structure you described would work wonderfully with our preliminary plans. Here is what we thought: it would be great for us to have three courses. One course a very basic course for kids, a scavenger hunt, using a map and campus to find "goodies". A and S have run this program before at our fall festival. This is very self contained course that does not stray far from the sanctuary's central location. Westmoreland would run this. Then a second course, which would be similar or could be the clinic that you mentioned. A basic course for adults and teens to learn on. The third course would be a difficult course that advanced orienteering skills could be tested. It would be exactly as you described below. The benefit to the multiple courses is that it will have a broad base of appeal. Orienteering could then be seen as much as a family education or family sport as an individual competitive sport. All of your thoughts and input on this structure would very much be appreciated. We would love to meet all of you either on the phone or in person to plan and get feedback. Our hope is for us Co-sponsor the meet with you. This would give your club potential for new membership and the Sanctuary more exposure to the community.

I understand that running an event such as the one described above will need substantial volunteer base. To that end there is a local high school boy scout troop that has volunteered to help us out. We will reach out to other boy scout groups in the area. A friend of the Sanctuary. who teaches at West Point, is working on recruiting cadets for the meet on an ongoing basis. Additionally, Col. H at West Point has been contacted in connection with the meet and is aware of it. I have spoken to a nurse and a doctor about running a first aid station and they will recruit doctors and nurses as needed. We continue working on building a volunteer base from now until the meet.

In terms of promotion, we were hoping to promote through the schools and towns. Many of the town and school activity booklets are printed for a spring season and we would have to come up with an event structure and description between the two groups in the very near future possibly by the end of the December. We would also like to set up a website that connected to both yours and ours for pre-registration.

I am such rookie, S and A much less so, but we would be so excited to work and learn with you. I really appreciate you taking the time for all of this.

Quickroute

I came at 9 but didn't end up making myself particularly useful. At one point Hannah handed me a wad of start stubs while I was standing near the start... I didn't realise that was the way start crew were supposed to know who was starting when, oops.

Weather was sunny, great if a bit cold.

Eventually got out and ran the Blue, didn't warm up first which was silly, but time was ticking, so I was sloppy to 1 (40s?), and not very diligent to 2. Three I navigated fine to the circle but had mis-pictured how it was supposed to be, lost 30+s. Picked up Daniel.

Four, route was sub-optimal, found the control ok, if hesitant. Probably not the optimal route to 5, or I'm just weak, but found the side-hilling tough going, and bashed my ankle. 6 ok, even if I didn't understand the circle at all. 7, route again... fell between two stools. 8, slow starting off, but mostly good, ditto 9.

10 I thought would be easier than it was. Ended up a bit confused, standing three metres from the control, could see the re-entrant below, didn't understand where else I could be, turned around and...

11 Daniel was still with me at 10, gave him a 30s headstart as I pondered the map at 10 and then the route to 11. I took the low route, Daniel high, he lost time there.
12 and 13 a bit messy in the middle, poor.

Yeah, so nothing disastrous, but pretty crap orienteering on my part. Is it fitness or do I need my head examined?

Three from work, a climber and a husband all came, and discussed it over Thai lunch afterwards. Good times.

164 AHR - either I was being apathetic or I'm not fit enough to run hard. Core strength is called for.

Bloody Arab dictators beating up peaceful, unarmed protesters again.

Oh wait, that was California. And a ruptured spleen isn't a big deal, is it?

Note

Non-fail, except the bit where I wiped out discovering some wet, previously leaf-covered planks just near the end, and then a bit closer to home realised I neglected to plan for means to re-enter the apartment. To quote Perry, oops.

Billygoat 2002 re-run, Friday or Saturday, Thanksgiving weekend. FUN!
9 AM

trail run 1:04:26 intensity: (49 @1) + (28:31 @2) + (32:55 @3) + (2:03 @4) + (8 @5) 8.46 km (7:37 / km)

TrailO, did a loop around the east side of the "mountain" and back the west. This place still amazes me.

Pre-breakfast, except breakfast didn't properly happen either, just a pear, some cider and a bit of cheese. Then lunch was tiny. Stupid ordinary person sized helpings. Needed more food.

climbing 1:00 [3]

Scabbed a bit of chocolate off Oktay and munched the remaining almonds I had in the office, got enough energy back in the system for a light session. Traversed, did a 5.6, 5.7, then half a 5.6 twice - seems like it needed a 7+ move in the long, slightly overhanging middle. Fairly pathetic, still fun times. Oh, and I got the V1 I had been failing repeatedly.

climbing 2:00 [3]

less impressive today, perhaps still a bit tired from the weekend. Did make it up one tough 5.7 on the second attempt with a couple of takes.

Had intended going for a jog this morning, but didn't get up in time.

orienteering 2:00:00 [3] 10.0 km (12:00 / km)

Surebridge,
US Champs, Day One, Blue 1993

Thanks to Hannah I am now suitably knackered. No flags, no compass, no gps... just a camelbak (smart move) for company. Made two mistakes and got confused and hesitated lots a few times, but not off line. Much easier to read today's map, despite the 1:15000 thing, but I'm out of practice (or too unfit?) to read on the run properly. Back is shattered now, a few more runs like this and I'll get some core strength back, or I could just do a few core strength sessions (chances). Not sure what time I ran, will probably update when I see Hannah's (faster) time.

This is wonderful stuff. I can't believe I haven't come here more often. Chenritzo did the US Champs Orange no problem, and the three of us grabbed bbq food afterwards in Fort M. Good times.

Ludzie, guess who makes an appearance here, 10:50 or so into the video. http://tv.worldofo.com/?id=759

trail run 20:00 [2] 3.0 km (6:40 / km)

To start (woods) and from finish (roadside). My GPS track did something totally different!
