Note

Went for a quick stroll in SL, drew in a few cliffs and got devoured by mosquitoes. Rested.

Bought a t3i yesterday. Yay.

Note

I didn't say yesterday, but the orienteering was of course fun, pretty runnable with a good course, if a little tough for your average fireman :)

The woods are a joy (except perhaps for the 20m of smelly pond we had to run en route to the 2nd).

World Police and Firefighter Games

Apparently I may have won. By twenty minutes. Oops. Pity I'm not a reservist :)

Driving over after work, the Hudson was reddish I guess from half the Catskills washing down... quite striking with the green hills bordering it.

Came in Stony Lonesome Gate and took first left as instructed, even with a sign for PX... did a couple of tos and fros in there before coming out to the main road and trying the second left, much more successful.

Hannah and co. somehow talked me into doing the Red instead of one of the green courses... Started off walking up the first hill, HR over 150, no way keeping it below was going to happen. Oh well. I did quite a bit of walking whenever it went over 160...

The third control was the only one I made a mistake on (apart from maybe 2 times ten-twenty seconds). It was quite straightforward to find, small hill on a big long spur. So I climb the spur and jog down and see the control on a small hill and it's a water control, strange says I. I glance at the descriptions, yep, water at the third control already, punch drink and hobble off. Something seems strange with the contours, and after I climb the next spur the boulder and path are not where they should be.... way too far off... so I head back, wondering if the control was placed wrong or I am really stupid or what... from the contours it was pretty easy to tell it was the hill 100m up the (almost flat) spur... and the code was wrong... so I scooted down to the next hill and got the control, and another drink. Disaster averted :)

Spent a while chatting afterwards. Some Swedes said hej to me, I spoke with a couple from Attunda Firefighters/ VasbysOK.

Then decided to do a little exploring, found the cadet chapel thing, pulled up just after another VW. The chapel was closed, I say hi to the young (by priest standards) priest that got out of the other car, he says he's in the wrong place, should be at the Catholic chapel but likes the view up here. His parish is up in Massachussetts, but he was Seán M from Listowel Co. Kerry. We start talking about stuff and the army and being a priest and whatnot, I seem to recall asking him whether masturbation was widespread in the seminary. Then we went off in search of the catlick chapel, got in there. It's beautiful. He said I could say a prayer, I told him I was atheist, he said maybe he could do something about that, I said I might end up converting him. We stuck our heads in the parish house to see if anyone was home and Brian the Monsignor came out... and they joined forces... and spoke about truth, perhaps with a capital t. Brian seemed to have a high opinion of the writings of JPII. I mentioned transubstantiation because that came up in conversation, as it does, a few days ago, and Seán seemed upset or bemused that the bible-bashing prods in this country don't believe in it, the Word. I can't say they convinced me of much, but they seem benevolent and were entertaining.

Also, filled up the tank as I figured it was cheaper inside, $3.83 the gallon.

Note

Nothing of especial note Sunday... Croton Dam was spectacular that evening, driving down the 9 to Tarrytown and to WP was fine, same going to work this morning. This evening I went exploring around back roads off the 134 and a dose of them were closed.

I tried getting to the S side of Croton Dam passing under the amvets bridge, but right before I got there the road decided it would be closed, a big tree held up by quite a few wires, pity. Went for a walk up towards Bald Mtn on the TK trail, pleasant. V pretty down by the reservoir.

Note

Croton Dam was spectacularly awesome (in the proper sense of the word) today.

Sadly my camera batteries died before I could take pics.

Otherwise the storm was terribly anticlimactic.
