running warm up/down 18:00 [2]

of which 5 beforehand

orienteering race 46:41 [4] 5.77 km (8:05 / km)
ahr:153 max:184

Osterakers Medeldistans.

I thought I was running reasonably fast and orienteering badly. Boris ran faster and orienteered worse, according to winsplits. More strangely, until the 6th control, my HR was in the 160-180 zone... after that, it spent most of the time sub-150. This is partly because controls 7-13 and 15-finish were short legs, and partly because I was orienteering hesitantly, but I thought I was still pushing... funny, obviously should be running harder (if I could read a map).

And yet, I don't think I was losing a lot more time in the second half. Hmmm.

Winsplits says 6 was a big mistake (1.35), it was a couple of smaller mistakes. 2nd control, a minute. 7, 20s, but it was more a problem with speed and a bad line. 8 I hada good split, the 5 or 10s spent deciding on a route were well-spent :) 9, 15-20s hesitated down the slope, expected the crag to be to my left. It wasn't. Doesn't see any more mistakes. Stupid program ;p

It's possible to do this so much better. 3:20 plus another couple of minutes reading the map more fluidly plus another minute or two pushing physically. The winner ran almost ten minutes faster.

I should try sleeping more before orienteering, I think it helps.

Note

Winter has arrived. Regretted not taking the hat and gloves out of summer hibernation this morning. Still sunny, but not warm. Rest day.

Note

Checkd out www.smartway.hu where they have the GPS tracks from WOC available free, finally.

Unfortunately we ran so so well in 2008 that I didn't deserve a GPS unit in the relay, but I knew roughly where I was in relation to JonT early on and then Eddie (caught, just about, at the 5th) and Tiago for most of the race. When I made the mistake at the 13th which allowed Eddie catch me again, I was nearly caught by Nordberg, TG and MS. Madness.

Some vindication at the 22nd control, which according to the GPS was suffering from a little distortion... I started looking for it 10-20m too close to the track :)

Exciting race, especially when you don't know what's going on!

Relay

Quite wobbly at times but no major mistakes, which is ok since it was my first time night-orienteering in a while. The forest was small, white and had lots of tracks, sometimes hard to distinguish. Good fun!

Daylight run in Arsta, faster for twenty-five, then slow. Reading a map.

Heresy!

Beautiful sunny day, so I waited until it got dark and cold and a little wet to try out my replacement Petzl Ultra. Map in hand, mostly on trails, but I picked up a couple of controls.
