running 15:00 [3]

A wee spin on the campus with some 20s bursts at the end to remind the legs what they have to be doing tomorrow. Not long left now. Feeling good!

The heat is back.

orienteering 45:00 [3]

orienteering intervals with Nick and Shane on Hollestoto

maybe 20-25mins fast

good to get a bit of speed work in

orienteering 20:00 [1]

Took a walk/jog around the middleQ model so I can sleep tomorrow.

The area I was on was a little rougher... and contours were a little less bad.

orienteering 55:00 [3]

An hour and a half's drive on windy windy roads to get a map not worthy of the name... forest was pleasant enough. Fast on flat and downhill, v slow on the uphills. Met a few more WOCers.

Then drove back, got accredited mostly, etc.

orienteering 50:00 [2]

Area 15 training
Kisfennsik

Rented a car and headed up another long and winding road, overshot slightly but didn't lose too much time :)

Again, nothing too exciting. Reasonably pleasant, and physically I felt a bit better although still not 100%.

Picked up Nick, Ros and Kyle from the station. nice Hungarian dinner once we got everything sorted.

Note

now I am too tired, despite being in bed just after 10pm and not getting up till 9. hmmm, easy day today, but on a map.

orienteering 55:00 [2]

Tamás-kút,
Hungary

Middle training... still v tired, should be back in a day or two. Cloudy today with a few drops of rain in the hills. Temperature dropped to a Baltic 22 degrees.

Forest was not very exciting, mostly white and runnable. v1 was also runnable, v2 slighlty less so. Nothing I haven't done before.

Travelled 50 mins each way on a narrow winding road with some Poles. Wojtek was happy with his form.

Some dirty canadian stole my map. You'd think he'd have gone for something more valuable.
Edit: On reflection, it seems more likely now that he took it in return for services to be rendered. I wonder what they could be.

Note

for those who want to play Count the Contours (click on it for larger pic):

I seem to be alone in thinking that the area around the first 7 controls (and where a large part of yesterday's course went too) was the most fun and interesting. Must be my French upbringing. We had to flip the map for the last few controls.

So I was chatting with a WOC organiser last night and he was saying that this comp'n is not that popular with Hungarians. He guessed 700m of climb... he said the SK organisers don't actually count the climb, just look at the course and pluck a figure out of the air... and that even if they knew it was over 700 (or in this case 800)m of climb, they would never write that... :)

running 16:00 [1]

wee jog around the miskolc university campus

not too tired, but not a bad idea to have a rest day anyway after the drive yesterday

running warm up/down 15:00 [3]

Not enough sleep last night... had to get up for breakfast at 7:30!

orienteering race 1:47:45 [4] 9.9 km (10:53 / km) +835m 7:39 / km

Szentendre Kupa
Day 2

The advertised 9.9 and 440m climb seemed like a bit more than I needed, so I took the camel and set out not too hard. Managed to go to the 7th en route to 2... navigated perfectly, so I was very happy until I saw the control code! Doh!.
Feet started getting sore in the steep continental slopes and gullies that we didn't visit yesterday. Slowed down and took some dodgy routes (trying to minimise climb and gullies)... Shane caught me 10 minutes after 80 mins of running, so I sped up and beat him back, just, finishing two minutes ahead (8 minutes down). 15 to the finish I didn't make a mistake.

Glad I had the camel as there was no water out there (and not sure I would have drunk it if there were). Tough race.

I counted 167 contours on our course, not sure how many of those I ran, but way way more than what was advertised!

Some Moldovan ran 91. Currently waiting in the airport for Greg to pick me up in a bigger car than what we had. Tired. Drinking lots. And lots. And lots.

Note

I may actually only have climbed 144 contours... 720m... not that much really :)

It was hot work for the feet, and good to cool down after:

Aislinn was none too pleased
and Greg and I declined lunch to eat elsewhere, in hopefully more hygienic circumstances...
