bike 1:00 [3]

Went for a spin with Nina!

Great weather. Went for a stroll yesterday, caught sunset on the Rhone. Slowly feeling human again.

Note

scratchy throat since last week has turned sore. I tried resting lots after the orienteering, but it wasn't enough.

Swiss National Race, Petit Risoux, other side of Lac de Joux.

Hammocked overnight, better sleep than any other night this week I reckon, despite the subzero temperatures. Good stars.

Nearly warmed up before taking the bus to the pre-start, where it began to rain. Sheltered in a cold tent until a few minutes before my start, leaving it a bit tight because, as some Ticinese said, it was at the limit of fun, and I was feeling a bit vulnerable to sickness. Then the start was further than I thought, so I missed mine and started 5+minutes late. Oops. Anyway, wasn't exactly planning on being competitive, nor even especially on finishing.

The woods were full of brashings which was somewhat shit. And the wet trees meant I was cold and cold the whole time. I unwisely didn't wear a thermal, just normal otop and buff. The buff did wonders. And yet, I was not miserable. I thought I would quit at 11 or 12 and jog back to the finish, but I couldn't persuade myself it wasn't fun. So I embarked on the looong leg with a smile and pondered life. 13-16 were fun, though I didn't understand something in the map near 16. There was a control in a pit/depression I couldn't identify, maybe it was under the circle.

Another wee mistake on the second last, plus a couple of early ones, but not too bad overall.

There must be a shortage of pleasant woods in Switzerland.

Drove straight home with heating on almost full and heated seats the whole way, not something I can usually stand. Then bed :)

running warm up/down 25:00 [3]

Included some orienteering on the warmup map

Swiss Sprint Champs.

Wasn't sure I'd handle the extra distance running elite.

Crossed paths with swisscheese before I started, he'd finished and was smiling more than seemed reasonable. Then I got to play in the woods and I understood. Lovely, runnable, well-mapped. Went about as fast as I could. Wheels nearly fell off a couple of times, maybe 15s lost total to excessive hesitations. Thought I might be closer than 2'30 behind the lead. Maybe I should train.

running 25:00 [3]

Not sleeping too well this week. Good to get out for a jog. I wonder what'll happen when I have a map in hand on Saturday.

running 22:00 [3]

Couple of loops of the zoo.
Perhaps starting easy is good. Felt better than I expected.

bike 1:00 [3]

Most of the effort was on the way there...

orienteering race 1:00:00 [2] *** 4.0 km (15:00 / km)

Terrasses de Genève

Nice course on rough but fine terrain. Didn't really ever get up to running speed. I need to train!

Legs were a bit tired after the cycle there, sad to say.

Nice result.

Co-organised some night-o at la Perle du Lac.

Beautiful little park. Weather had been grim all morning and afternoon before sort of drying up. Droplets glistened on the trees' needle-tips.

Only 40 or so people turned up, which says something about our advertising skills.

We had a tent and electricity courtesy of the science history museum. The electricity stopped working a bit after 5, if it was working at all (it had seemed to be). Disaster, or at least, printing split times was going to be difficult. Lennart called for the club generator to be brought. Miraculously, out behind some cabin, surrounded by empty bottles and cobwebs, was a live cable!

Paris

Sunday Oct 2, 2016 #

Note

After another 24 essentially sleepless hours travelling, went for a paddle in the Atlantic.

Made the train at Montparnasse with 3 minutes to spare.

Saturday Oct 1, 2016 #

Note

Drove through Harriman this morning. Didn't stop :(

The woods were mystical under the low, damp clouds with the turning leaves.

Sad to think I'll be teaching most September/Octobers for the next thirty years and won't be free to experience this.
