Note

After orienteering, I saved people's lives marshalling for Tour de Helsinki. I was more interested in the estates driving by than the bicycles... V70, 320d, Skoda Superb and VW Passat all seem plausible options, if purchased in Germany. Any tips? It should be able to carry a lot of shtuff from Helsinki to Geneva, and then be suitable for driving people and gear up and down hills.

eGames KS 7km
day 2

A little sloppier today, or at least, less smooth. Still not frightful.

Felt like I was cold overnight, coughed a little this morning, but the bright orange jacket warmed me up rightly. Running seems to have cured whatever it was.

eGames, but I didn't enter on time, so only running Kuntosuunnistus.

Saw Jagge at the start, but wasn't expecting to catch him given how he ran on Tuesday, despite his protestations.

And then the first control, stopped 50m short just because I didn't understand anything, despite the excellent visibility. Did a few pirouettes and then went to the control (visible from 5m from where I had been humming and hawing).

Next couple of controls were fine, just need to work on punching technique. And mostly good with the rest, just the long leg to twelve I got a bit confused at a couple of spots, and I'd been pushing for a while so the brain started to fart, maybe lost a minute. Paused leaving 12, chose a reasonably safe route to 13 (though not taking the path, really?!)... 14 was the same as #1, and the run-in took me less than half the time going (uphill, somewhat) to 1.

Not bad considering I slept pretty poorly.

spent way too long trying to get a graphics programme to work on my computer... installing gnuplot on OSX.7 is way too complicated!

Firmaliiga, Luukki

Started okay, but a mistake at 3 and then a big mistake at 6 knocked the wind out of me. 1:15 laser just seems like a bad idea, even if good training for SM.

bogtrotting 2:20:00 [2] 16.0 km (8:45 / km) +500m 7:34 / km

Up to see Virgin Mary, Star of the Sea again. Stunning views, as always, and a great descent. Took the proper route home.

Went slowly, not interested in bonking.

Thursday Aug 21, 2014 #

Note

Done a bunch of maths, work around the house/land, swimming etc the past week and a bit, so not too upset about light mileage.

A much better balance to life than when hanging out in uni maths depts.

Note

Fingertips are in pieces, but the ivy is worse.
10 PM

bogtrotting 55:00 [3] 6.84 km (8:03 / km)

Capriccioso run

Hillside, beach, road, hill (Crumpaun with the sun setting behind Slievemore, glorious), downhill (the most fun!), road and home.

Going native. Took a sledgehammer up to the bog.

running 1:04:00 [2] 9.93 km (6:27 / km)

3 Beaches run.

Lovely, needless to say.

8 PM

bogtrotting 26:00 [2] 3.0 km (8:40 / km)

Scouting out some terrain. If I were a bit more energetic it would have been runnable. Had to be brief due to dinner engagement.

1 PM

bogtrotting 59:10 [3] 6.17 km (9:35 / km) +500m 6:49 / km

Minaun, the Napoleonic route!
2 PM

bogtrotting 1:01:00 [2] 9.28 km (6:34 / km)

Up to Mary, chatted to a few Hungarians, didn't freeze despite wearing nought but a singlet and short shorts, ran home. Except I got tired and hungry, so running became jogging, and jogging became jogging along the road for the last ten minutes, shameful.

Tuesday Aug 12, 2014 #

Note

25 minutes swimming in Dugort!

Almost shivering when I came out, glorious.

Monday Aug 11, 2014 #

Note

In the afternoon, did some forestry management (Andrew would be jealous), got eaten by loads of midges, went for a swim.
12 PM

bogtrotting 1:19:00 [3] 10.11 km (7:49 / km) +200m 7:07 / km

Slovenia may have been beautiful, but Achill beats it.

Nothing better than the north face of Slievemore with the sun and the wind on my back.

Sunday Aug 10, 2014 #

Note

And back to Ireland. Fireworks in GVA last night were sort of nice. Maybe I was too close. The lasting impression was a filthy cloud of smoke.

trail run 1:20:00 [3] 4.97 km (16:05 / km) +850m 8:40 / km

bus to Veyrier, walked to quarry, jogged and climbed up Mont Salève. Messed around a bit on top, had a tasty lemonade, took the cable car back down.

The 2nd km had 40% climb!

Note

A mathematical physicist in Geneva knew that a dentist had won Sierre Zinal last year. Can't be that bad a place.

Wednesday Aug 6, 2014 #

Note

Made it to Geneva, and will again.

Tuesday Aug 5, 2014 #

Note

Survived two weeks of orienteering, and finished today with the best run of the trip.

Currently sitting in a Brauhaus in Villach where waiters wear lederhosen and the beer is local. The old town has lots of cute passages, but not quite amazing sprint terrain. This region could have been Slovene. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carinthian_Plebiscite

Awaiting a midnight train to Geneva, via Zurich.

Better, still room...

I told myself this was easy and fun, and it was. Winner was about 46 or 47.

OOcup 3

Not too bad considering the carousing the night before. This race was in Letus(h), the site of my famous victory over Mr Pinker in 2007 (?).

Boris kicked ass today, taking advantage of the state of the Irish.

Swim in the Savinj after, and then tasty ice-cream in Mozirje, followed by super-tasty ice-cream in Mozirje, then spectating log-rafting and chainsaw sculpting... life is tough ;)

Saturday Aug 2, 2014 #

Note

So... in the pub with the mayor's daughter... and she knows everyone...

Neil: so, you know these guys, what do they do?

Anja: well, he works for my uncle, he works with wood, makes stuff, he's a drug dealer.

Hmm. Good party. Tomorrow (today) will be rough.

3 big mistakes,lots of hesitations

Friday Aug 1, 2014 #

Note

Ski-jump training going on outside our accomm for the competition tomorrow. Party in town with free food and drink and lots of folk music and dancing. Life is tough.

After the race, at lunch in a local gostilna, we got talking with an Italian couple (Daniela Putzu and partner) who were HVO members back in the day. I was in NYC from Feb to May 2002. They were there from August 2002-2003, teaching at high-schools in Brooklyn.

OOcup Day 1

Velika Planina

Back to old hunting grounds, 25m above the car park. Let ham and tricep have been dodgy for a while. Standing up after putting on socks in the arena, I added left groin to the list. Hamstring held up ok running, but tricep got a good bit worse.

Orienteering was lots of fun, though hadn't slept quite enough. I was bad in the technical area. Beat Boris by a few seconds. The other Irish were all way faster, but I sadly beat Eoin too as I didn't need to stop twice to leave presents out there...
