Note

Failed to move out of my apartment. Failed to get past the first hurdle in a recruitment process. Succeeded in renewing my car registration.

running 6:00 [2]

6 PM

orienteering 1:27:49 [3] 9.28 km (9:28 / km)

Ran the no walls, no trails, no compass training I planned for my going away weekend.
There's video of Marco running this.
http://sprintseries.org/doma/show_map.php?user=ndo...

Mostly good, got confused/lost en route to 14, and was getting dark, harder to read the map and harder to see the branches lying in ambush...

Wonderful stuff. Very fun. Beautiful. Amazing. And no streamer at 2 or 11 (11 was a terrible reentrant).

Wednesday Aug 29, 2012 #

Note

Heard on the radio: "the health and viability of seniors". Don't you love Republicans?
Apparently someone is going to ship my stuff somewhere, sometime.
5 PM

trail run 28:00 [3]

2 PM

trail run 30:00 [3]

Ran the uphills faster. Foot still messed up.

Note

In today's news headlines... "US reluctant to crucify Armstrong", followed by
"Neil Armstrong dies at age 82"
2 PM

orienteering 1:09:31 intensity: (7:38 @1) + (21:59 @2) + (32:52 @3) + (7:02 @4) 6.33 km (10:59 / km)
ahr:150 max:177

Another attempt at Jagge's contour only plus training, no compass. Got confused twice in the zone between 1 and 2 (again). Rest was mostly fine, some better. Legs weren't working too well, but the woods were wonderful.
1:04:00 for the course.

Good times today.

bike 3:00 [3]

Cycled to and from cake and cookies, 12 miles each way. Croton Reservoir dam was so beautiful today.

It's shameful that this is the first and last time I cycle to work.

Thursday Aug 23, 2012 #

7 PM

orienteering 35:13 [2] 3.03 km (11:38 / km)

On Jagge's magic lidar autOmap. Pretty amazing, contours mostly good, although the occasional dot knoll was a giant thing, and many cliffs made it, some didn't, only saw one false positive cliff I think. The big contour shapes made a lot of sense.

On the subtle side... the contour isn't always at the right level to go all around a land mass, and there was for example a distinct knoll (<1.5m) on a downhill slope, so it stuck out a ways, but didn't register.

The green seemed irrelevant, partly because the stuff that slows you down is decaying fallen trees, or recent ones, not pine needles 5m above ground. Well, it was getting dark, so I couldn't tell too much what the veg was doing... and had to curtail my pleasure to get home in one piece.

Fun!

running 25:00 [3]

Went out to deliver mail to the previous tenants... and met them for the first time as they were chilling in the garden.
One works for NYNJTC and know Geof through all his trail maintenance, and probably knows everyone it's useful to know in Westchester. The other is a professor in Pace. And they're lovely.

The heel is weird. It's quite possibly fasciitis, although I'm not sure how one tells, and it didn't hurt at all while running, but I definitely wanted to toe-plant. It's still tender, and rest didn't seem to help it. Hohum.

Note

Sometimes you have to wonder if the IT is deliberately embarrassing people by publishing their letters: "Whether or not you believe in God, He is utterly sui generis, even as a concept. Even if nobody had ever told you about God, the idea of a supreme intelligence behind the universe would occur to you spontaneously. It is natural to turn to this putative intelligence with your petitions."

Putting out controls... aerial photo orienteering... stuff made from history - https://dl.dropbox.com/u/39397168/Aug2012.Colour.g...

It was raining, lovely for running, really felt great. Strange that Peter, Angela and Marek didn't want to run in it. Jesus quit partway around.

Note

I have found an online job application where the drop-down list of titles for a referee includes Fr and Sr. Br doesn't make the cut.

Note

More bizarreness... copied "Pasch's property" from a pdf (in english), and pasted it: Π ασχ η∋σ προπ ερτ ψ

Indeed, there's a whole paragraph...

Elliptical, followed by a bit of strength/stretching.

I've started duct-taping my heel in the hope...

Note

Good times. Dinner with old friends and a new baby in New Haven yesterday, than hanging out with Rob and Becky, then a bike ride around Old Saybrook with a swim followed by brunch, so tasty, and great company.

Mike danced for us. Photos

aerobic (bike/other) 1:30 [3]

bike. heel still sore.

rode a tandem with Jeff!

Saturday Aug 11, 2012 #

Note

Heel is sorer than it was yesterday. I had hoped to run in WPR today. Hohum.

Note

Sad story in the news about a crash in Offaly yesterday. But there was this:
"Last year, 186 people died on the roads, the lowest total in 50 years. The number of road deaths in 2012 has remained at broadly the same level as in 2011."

Ten fifteen years ago the numbers used to be around the 350-400 range. Less drink-driving, better roads, less speeding... whatever it is, the improvement is fantastic.

In comparison, there were over 32,000 traffic deaths in 2010 in the US, similar to the Irish rate fifteen years ago.

Brutus:
There is a tide in the affairs of men.
Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;
Omitted, all the voyage of their life
Is bound in shallows and in miseries.
On such a full sea are we now afloat,
And we must take the current when it serves,
Or lose our ventures.
Julius Caesar Act 4, scene 3, 218–224

Note

Can someone tell me why this happens?

Left hand side is a gif export, rhs is pdf. Same file, different colours. I've checked and for both OCAD exports the cmyk colours.

I'd rather take a pdf to the printers, but gif has the correct colours. I'm on a mac/parallels/OCAD9 combo.

aerobic (bike/other) 2:00 [3]

Kayaking from P'keepsie. Did not see any Crockers, but did catch the sunset.

Pretty.

Monday Aug 6, 2012 #

aerobic (bike/other) 30 [3]

More elliptical. Plus a bit of stretching/strength at the end.

I don't often get to watch CNN. Do they always preface vacuous reporting with, "We have some important new information"?

Note

Russian women's handball coach is hilariously scary.

trail run 33:00 [3]

What horrible weather.

My right heel has felt like the bone is bruised underneath for the past week.

trail run 34:38 [3] 5.04 km (6:52 / km)

South from 301, then decided that was silly and went north to Beaver Pond and went for a swim with the proprietor.

Long day, quick stroll of Boscobel grounds, hadn't the energy to do the house tour, then to Beacon, fish'n'chips, then went across the road to see what the cool building was, Howland Community Center, might be the nicest building I've been in in this country. It was built as a library, today it hosted a marathon poetry session, I lasted half an hour. Then Dia:Beacon, strange and bizarre, occasionally good. Back to the town centre to see some artistic glasswork, then ice-cream, then a gallery (one of maybe 50 on Main St) where the artist was inspired by her husband's electron microscopy work for some big multinational in Fishkill, we bitched about management of such companies for a bit.

Then went out for the run and swim, quick shower when I got home, then went down to the waterfront for music and fireworks (surprisingly impressive fireworks, I must say). Amazing what a nuclear power plant can do in that regard.

aerobic (bike/other) 30 [3]

Elliptical.
Watched the last ten minutes of Austria vs Russia in women's beach volleyball. I'm starting to see the attraction. The Austrian sisters were cool, pretty damn good and wore t-shirts!

Then some Democracy Now. Uplifting stuff from Syria. Ugh.
