Note

Nothing of especial note Sunday... Croton Dam was spectacular that evening, driving down the 9 to Tarrytown and to WP was fine, same going to work this morning. This evening I went exploring around back roads off the 134 and a dose of them were closed.

I tried getting to the S side of Croton Dam passing under the amvets bridge, but right before I got there the road decided it would be closed, a big tree held up by quite a few wires, pity. Went for a walk up towards Bald Mtn on the TK trail, pleasant. V pretty down by the reservoir.

Note

Croton Dam was spectacularly awesome (in the proper sense of the word) today.

Sadly my camera batteries died before I could take pics.

Otherwise the storm was terribly anticlimactic.

Note

did another wee bit of Manhattanville... you'd want to be a proper masochist to make a map for fun...

apparently it's not going to be all *that* windy.

Note

they're shutting down public transport in NYC tomorrow... must be some serious weather coming...

... and mandatory evacuation of low-lying NY coast...

other 10 [3]

Went for a wee stroll in SL towards dusk... which seems to be when pairs of men appear in the woods and a police car appears in the carpark.

Logged so as not to have an empty week. Zzz

'"But there is a world of difference between teaching “pure” math, with no context, and teaching relevant problems that will lead students to appreciate how a mathematical formula models and clarifies real-world situations. The former is how algebra courses currently proceed — introducing the mysterious variable x, which many students struggle to understand. By contrast, a contextual approach, in the style of all working scientists, would introduce formulas using abbreviations for simple quantities — for instance, Einstein’s famous equation E=mc2, where E stands for energy, m for mass and c for the speed of light."

From NYT. Yeah, so you mightn't understand what a formula is, but if you know that mass is really just energy divided by bloody all that divided by bloody fast, we could teach you...

... not that there isn't a modicum of sense in the article.

Christ I wish I had training to log.

Toddled over to BMtn after work to say hello to the junior camp going on. I have seen the future and it is Russian! :)

Socialised instead of going for a jog, a good call.

I wonder how to get some regular coaching and training going in the area. Salaries and advertising, advertising and money.

A fine end to WOC week with the French boys finally getting the gold they deserve after so many years. There was a lot of exciting spectating over the web; I can only imagine what it must have been like sur place. Nice to see the Irish finish off the week with a fine 22nd place in the Men's Relay.

Now, if only...
- IOF would realise technical = good
- IOF would realise middle = really good
- IOF would realise low-visibility technical relay = really really good

- IOF would realise chasing start = bloody awful.

Looking forward to updates from the banquet.

Note

From WoO translation of TG's interview, post middle:
- I worked hard on developing a new technique to handle the terrain here, but in fact I did not even need it. I started out with the new technique, but then the visibility was so good that I could return to my normal technique. Looking far ahead to see the easily identifiable features, and run fast through the terrain

Note

No surprise Tero won again today. He sounded disappointed that the race wasn't especially technical. Poor guy, and the poor people who compete for 2nd.

Maybe they have kept the interesting terrain for the relay.

I'm really happy Thierry won the Long. The world is now a better place. And France was spared one almighty strop.

Is he the tallest and heaviest man to win WOC Long/Classic?

trail run 1:08:28 intensity: (1:25 @1) + (23:54 @2) + (27:24 @3) + (15:45 @4) 8.85 km (7:44 / km)

Inspired by Thierry and Annika and Marc and Ali and Carol and Pasi and Minna, ahem, and the beautiful weather, went out exploring.

Found some nice trails down the road from work, Kitchawan Preserve and a little trespassing in IBM property...

strength 2:00 [3]

Throwing blocks, cutting logs (first time using a chainsaw!), unloading, resting, gathering turf, loading, unloading... a good day's work!

A good stiff breeze kept the midgies at bay.

Note

Walked the length of Clare Island today. Pretty place. Fantastic weather, slightly pink. Didn't go up knockacleevthingummy because sister got scared. Went for a quick dip in the cove before getting the boat back. Fun times!
