Body feeling tired the last while. The cold outside isn't helping. Just did a small few crunches and pushups today before going to bed.

Hard work with the extra foot of snow. Spring please.

climbing 1:00 [3]

Perhaps not long enough since the previous session, fingers/forearms still tired. Did most of a 5.6+ and a bit of traversing.

plus a spin out onto the lake at the end. Running fast on ice coated with three or four inches of soft snow is like running on air, amazing sensation.

Lost my climbing virginity with a 5.5 and a 5.6-

Fun stuff. Really uses the fingers.

headed towards Silver Lake, then changed my mind and went for a spin aroun the New York Presbyterian Hospital campus... which, if not ideal, has just about enough going on to be a sprint venue.

Short night on the aeroplane, only 4h30 flight time. It was enough to drink 1.5 litres of water.

Temperature in A-B was around 28 on Monday in the shade. In New York, 0 and "freezing rain". Booo.

I hadn't a squeak out of my calf, amazing the difference a bit of warmth makes.

My replacement mac arrived. Five clicks, plugged in the backup and out popped a clone of my old machine, minus the chronic defects, I hope.

The Anza Borrego Desert Bighorn Goat

I was starting to feel the previous days' exertions in my legs. Or maybe breakfast was too recent. Anyhow, led for the first three controls, then Ian was a bit stronger. Most of the time I was a bit cleaner, slower on the flat and uphill and faster on the downhill. At the fork I caught him again as we had a drink. He went off one way, me the other. I nearly fell asleep and got caught out, but managed to find the control without losing much time. Ian messed up his control, so I had a couple of minutes to lose at the eleventh to let him catch up and overtake me again. Had him in sight, and caught him again at the drinks at 14 (I took a nuun). He ran away again, I caught up flaking the downhill to 16. 17 I took a silly route for fun, thought he'd be miles away but it nearly seemed like he was uneasy without me behind him :)
Saw him leaving 18, 19, 20, 21. 21 and 22 I ran fast, downhill, but we both missed 22... considered skipping as we were close to 23, but decided to get them all, come what may, and convinced Ian to do the same. 22 was also a drinks control, so worth getting.

We were running across the plain together more or less until I suffered my fifth or sixth cholla-attack of the day, and dropped 80m. Nearly caught him two controls later, right behind him leaving the last triangle control, pushed up and along the hill to the last, Ian staying a couple of metres ahead, but I somehow had a sprint left in me to take it by two seconds... happy days.

Rested for a bit, then drove to Julian for apple and boysenberry pie with ice-cream and then to Oceanside for a leak (bursting I was), petrol, a walk, a paddle, a swim, a walk, an outstanding burrito, bumbleberry pie chez Jen and Michael and Bo and Colin, and a slightly stressed drive to San Diego airport. No wrong turns and no delays and I dropped the ever-so-slightly worse-for-wear Prius off and got to check-in an hour before departure, loads of time to spare. Sort of.

Prii are great... SNA-> Anza Borrego -> Borrego Springs -> AB -> Oceanside->SAN for 27$ of petrol ain't half bad.

AB Blue II

Faster terrain and a shorter course made for less time out there. A couple of bobbles and a bad route-choice, mostly pretty easy/good. Lots of fun!

Except, I was clearly feeling snubbed by the chollas, so on the way in to the 7th I kicked one hard. It hurt, toes are still a funny colour.

Laid down under the Prius afterwards.

Anza Borrego Maze-O

Magical stuff, sometimes a bit nerve-wracking. I don't know how the 6yo boys and 60yo girls do this stuff. Only started the garmin halfway through, unfortunately.

One big mistake, and I think Ian may have beaten me, haven't seen results yet. Change that, Ian took 5 minutes out of me.

Fun fun fun!

Made a hames of the first, third seemed strange, 6th wasn't there, apart from that so serious issues. Lots of fun!

Another 30 minutes on the phone to apple today after they decided to ship out a 13 inch instead of a 15 inch.

First rep I spoke with was unable to help, claimed there was nothing to do but wait. I asked to speak with someone from the division responsible for the error; at least he had the grace to pass me over. The next guy was a sweet talker, all apologies, and managed to order the shipment of the 15 inch. Apparently the 13 inch, in "shipment prepared" stage, is beyond the point of no return and will come to White Plains, get refused and get shipped back.

Btw, if anyone has mac issues, I am assembling a directory of contacts in the firm :)

on the phone to apple yesterday for over half an hour... eventually told to remove the battery, hold down the power button 5s, put it back together, turn it on and do a pram reset... and then PFO... since that had the computer working again...

crash bang again this morning... currently on hold... 20 minutes in... depending on the position I hold the mac in I get one beep signal or three beep signal... less amusing than ...---...

50 minutes in, seems like I might be getting a new computer...

Snow orienteering in Surebridge. Drew a wildly optimistic course. Did a bit over half of the controls. Messed up one badly enough that I followed my footsteps backwards (easy in a foot of snow) to the last place I thought I knew where I was (I did, to within 20 metres, but they made all the difference).

No campass. Fell often.

For those who believe in the wonders of Apple...
Yesterday I had a crash/restart, two WindowServer crashes (all applications close, loss of data) and this morning a kernel panic (crash).
All this on a MacbookPro, which has had the display assembly, logic board (twice) and RAM replaced in four repair jobs. Grrrrrrrrrr.

woke up again at 5, maybe it's some residual jetlag, although I doubt it... but I went to bed at 11 and got up at 8, so feeling better.

Booked flights for Anza Borrego, going to be a tough weekend - 6am flight with a stopover to Orange County, on the 14th, then nonstop overnight back from San Diego and straight in to work on the Tuesday...

running 43:40 [3]

Jog around Silver Lake with Anna, the snow was crunchy. Fresh snow due tomorrow.

Frustrating news today. Hopefully something good can come of it.

did a bit of strength and stretching after the bike... was listening to radiolab sped up to "2x" on the ipod, although it seems like it wasn't quite... 20s of podcast taking about 12 seconds... worked fine anyhow, although the sound quality was a bit dodge.

just over eight hours in my new bed, woke up a bit after five, possibly due to being cold... also dehydrated, I think I need to raise the humidity level in the apartment. And get a curtain perhaps. And learn sentences write.

Saxon Woods, my first time there. Night orienteering with a bit of snow on the ground, just enough to provide a bit of cushioning.

Tricky enough area, Anna was navigating as we only had the one map between us, with me shadowing more or less. Good fun, but we weren't going fast enough for me to stay warm, so good thing we did a km and a bit at the end of pure running. Out for 1h41 total.

Went for my first run on Blue Mtn in many years. Ran an old Brown course I picked up somewhere. Slowly.

It was nice out, sunny with a couple of inches of snow left. The ice was just thick enough to creak but not break. No issues with runnability. Still, Ross and Jordan et al will have to train well to break 7 minutes per km in the longggggg :)

New Year's Resolutions... record how much sleep I get, and sleep more, and do some exercise every day this month.

Nice jog on a beautiful morning in New Jersey with Boris and Kat and Sergei. Temperatures were approaching Irish and shorts and t-shirt would probably have done in the sun.

Lots of snow on the ground.

Still tired after 7 hours sleep, perhaps because I was up for 27 hours before that. Fun night. As Boris did an extra lap of the park and Sergei did strength and stretching, I dangled with my eyes closed from the bar.
