The Anza Borrego Desert Bighorn Goat
I was starting to feel the previous days' exertions in my legs. Or maybe breakfast was too recent. Anyhow, led for the first three controls, then Ian was a bit stronger. Most of the time I was a bit cleaner, slower on the flat and uphill and faster on the downhill. At the fork I caught him again as we had a drink. He went off one way, me the other. I nearly fell asleep and got caught out, but managed to find the control without losing much time. Ian messed up his control, so I had a couple of minutes to lose at the eleventh to let him catch up and overtake me again. Had him in sight, and caught him again at the drinks at 14 (I took a nuun). He ran away again, I caught up flaking the downhill to 16. 17 I took a silly route for fun, thought he'd be miles away but it nearly seemed like he was uneasy without me behind him :)
Saw him leaving 18, 19, 20, 21. 21 and 22 I ran fast, downhill, but we both missed 22... considered skipping as we were close to 23, but decided to get them all, come what may, and convinced Ian to do the same. 22 was also a drinks control, so worth getting.
We were running across the plain together more or less until I suffered my fifth or sixth cholla-attack of the day, and dropped 80m. Nearly caught him two controls later, right behind him leaving the last triangle control, pushed up and along the hill to the last, Ian staying a couple of metres ahead, but I somehow had a sprint left in me to take it by two seconds... happy days.
Rested for a bit, then drove to Julian for apple and boysenberry pie with ice-cream and then to Oceanside for a leak (bursting I was), petrol, a walk, a paddle, a swim, a walk, an outstanding burrito, bumbleberry pie chez Jen and Michael and Bo and Colin, and a slightly stressed drive to San Diego airport. No wrong turns and no delays and I dropped the ever-so-slightly worse-for-wear Prius off and got to check-in an hour before departure, loads of time to spare. Sort of.
Prii are great... SNA-> Anza Borrego -> Borrego Springs -> AB -> Oceanside->SAN for 27$ of petrol ain't half bad.
