orienteering 55:00 [3]

Sagelva

Relatively easy orienteering. One mistake after going over my ankle... only went over it three times today. bugger. despite wearing two pairs of socks. oh well, it was beautiful anyhow.

orienteering 45:00 [3]

Malvikmarka

On what I guess is a newer map, different anyway from the one we ran on last year. Some changes and more detail, some of it dodgy, looks very different.

Made a mistake on the 4th control... sat down, tightened my laces (must try a second pair of socks), started again.
Moslty went ok, front of rt knee is still sore, has been for a week, possibly from downhill pronation... not too serious so far.

Note

jernnatt is a special word...
Anyone want to guess what it means?
12 PM

bogtrotting 35:00 [3]

ran around in the marsh until I found a nice little 49s loop, uphill and flat hard, then cruising downhill to start again... would prefer a slightly longer uphill and a flat bit at the bottom for recovery so I could push downhill too, but fun nonetheless.
Two sets of five loops.
4 PM

orienteering 1:00:00 [1]

jogging to/from start and shadowing Róisín and Catherine on some of the most beautiful marsh in the land, stunning weather too!

I was supposed to be running around a marsh but opted for company.

orienteering 1:28:07 [3] 11.0 km (8:01 / km)
ahr:148 max:175

Slättvålen, Idrefjäll

Drove up here yesterday (Niamh did half), arrived too tired to run. So a good night in bed and a digestive biscuit and I was out the door at 8am. Shocking.

We had picked up maps in the ski station the night before with permanent controls. The forest was really beautiful, totally open and runnable. Made two proper mistakes, one I was a contour or two too high on an across-the-slope leg, bad considering I was reading all the spur-re-entrant detail along the way; the other a downhill to a small marsh without contour detail to lead me in. Two other small mistakes too... but this was such good, fun training!

Out of the flat at 10.30 and on the road to Trondheim.

orienteering race 34:00 [4] 5.7 km (5:58 / km)
ahr:179 max:192

Coaches&vip race, wuoc

The terrain was pretty fast, top boys in the relay were breaking 5/km. Bjorn/SWE and Robert/AUS ran away from the rest of us after about two or three controls... I was pushing hard enough but only in maybe 6th place at the 9th control. Then took my own route choice on the long leg after hesitating for ten seconds watching everyone else, including Sam, go left. I messed up the start of the leg, but after that it was flat and smooth so I sped up... came to ten just in front of Sam and Martin/(swissnorwegian)... just made it through the spectator in front of Sam, she kindly gave me a push-start at the control :) I was almost a hundred metres behind a pack, but caught them at the 13th/14th. Punched 15 3rd of the pack and sped up, sat in behind the Austrian who zigzagged at a crucial moment, nailed 16 and didn't even need to sprint the run-in. Nice tactical finish.

Lost 25s to 8, 30s at the start of the tenth leg...

Lots and lots of fun!!!

orienteering 1:00:00 [3]

wuoc tour
includes warm-up because I'm so unimpressed with my run I couldn't be arsed separating it...

errors included bad direction; bad height judgment; bad distance; illogical jumps in where I thought I was; bad relocation; getting out of bed this morning; starting the race; finishing the race.

aerobic (bike/other) 30 [5]

running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

making Ross jealous

orienteering 17:40 [4] 3.3 mi (5:21 / mi)

Post-ran the WUOC course. A bit of fun. They had already removed the controls and the gates to the passages were half-closed, but that didn't make too much difference. Mistake to the 11th and slowed down a bit towards the end... fun though and sweaty.

Note

I must be having a positive effect on the team. 29th, 33rd and 47th - stars :)

orienteering race 1:10:00 [3] 8.0 km (8:45 / km)

WUOC spectator

lost 3mins on the first, another couple of mistakes too... quite unsure of myself on some of the slopes... would feel more confident about it a second time in the terrain...

went over the ankle again, near the end. I think the shoes might be too big. I want my spirits back :)

orienteering 1:00:00 [2]

did a bit of orienteering myself, then caught colm and shadowed him for a while.

went over my ankle a little bit a few times. This is a recent trend.

nice swim afterwards

lazy day

got accredited which is a plus.

Lots of photos from the Norwegian trip are in the most recent four albums here.

Note

In case you haven't heard already already, the Irish team for WOC was announced a while back. I'm running Middle, which is a good thing.

Note

woke up at 4 am to the sound of retching and didn't sleep properly after. Homemade cloudberry jam and cream on homemade waffles saved the morning and set me up for the six hour drive to Borlänge. Wrecked.

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuppppppppppppppppp Vassfjellet 1:15000

It was lovely. Body totally needs a rest. Ahould have been going faster and HR should go way higher.

orienteering 1:05:00 [3] 6.57 km (9:54 / km)
ahr:140

A bit (up and down) on the open mountain on top of Vassfjellet, reminiscent of W of Ireland, then mostly downhill controls in nice old forest, a fair bit of it light green, but with huge old trees. Made a couple of mistakes, one I would have relocated much faster with a bit of energy, the other I ended up deciding a funny-looking anthill must hve had a boulder underneath...

Lovely but knackered.

Drove to Östersund in the evening. Poisoned a compatriot en route.

Sprint training, Saupstad. Norwegians have a funny idea of sprint. I guess this could be run in 16 something...

Watched a biathlon girl training taking a gun off her back afterwards. Exciting session.

slope, somewhat downhill orienteering on Iladalen

Good tough orienteering, much less marsh running than usual. Made a few mistakes, 3rd control should have gone straight or left, right was grotty and made the approach difficult, 6th wasn't there, 7 I took a slightly high route... 9 hesitated in an unexpected flat area but ok, 10 a bit far left going over the hill, 12 I took a deliberately difficult route and messed it up unsurprisingly, one of several small crags in steep green.

Includes 8 minutes back to the car from the finish.

running warm up/down 23:00 [3] 3.5 km (6:34 / km)

I took a wrong turn on the way to the start, or more precisely didn't take a right turn. Oops.

Note

Forgot my shoes so walked to the start and back. Nice dinner after.

orienteering 54:00 [3]

LineO, then head to head with Shea, then a few controls, then a five minute jog back... ahr 168 for the h2h.

up by Graakallen. Fun training. Lots of fun. Marshes.
5 PM

orienteering 50:00 [3]
ahr:153

Missed the start of the relay training unfortunately, so ran up into the terrain with an old mass. Found an Inga and stalked her... she ran off the edge of my map. A Danish coach kindly lent me his map so I could do a loop before heading back to the car. Lost a couple of minutes on the first control as I set off too too hard.

Fun. Vassfjellet.

bogtrotting 35:00 [1]

Jogging around Rössöy from Skjerneset camping/fish-factory/museum... glorious.

Afterwards, did some surgery and discovered the wee wound from last week where I had the stick hanging out for a bit was a good half-centimetre deep. I removed the bit of stick that was clogging the hole.

running 36:00 [3]

Around Rossøy from a magical campsite on Averøy. Pure w of irl terrain.

Went for a walk after dinner to see the sun set. This was at 11:18 pm:

Said hello to some brooding gannets and chicks on the way back. Photos will come with a better internet connection.

Note

Road past Lesja to Andalsnes, then Trollstigen to Valldal (met François G on top), boat to Eidsdal, Eagle Way to Geiranger, boat around the fjord to Hellesylt. Met Tue L and Elin in the hostel, he was back in from a 2.5h jog up a local hill (850m).

The car is still going strong, in case anyone was wondering :)

Norway is unreal.

orienteering 2:29:00 [3] 14.0 km (10:39 / km) +830m 8:13 / km

WOC Long Selection Race
Craft Cup Verdal

Came 4th. Given my health issues, survival was the name of the game, no attacking this course. I ran an essentially clean race, got stuck a couple of times in the middle of long legs, although I'm sure proper post-race analysis will find minutes lost here and there in bits and pieces.

I wasn't in a good position going through the spectator control, but with almost an hour to go I pulled back several places as others didn't deal with the distance so well.

Nick and Andrew were well ahead again, but fit Neil would easily have been only a minute or three behind.

Happier today because I didn't orienteer like a pig with a bottle up its posterior, but I wasn't racing racing.

Garmin distance: 17km

orienteering 51:45 [3]

WOC Selection Race Middle.

Two huge mistakes on controls 4 and 13 screwed my chances in this. I needed a clean run since I had no speed.

5th place. Extremely pissed afterwards.

orienteering 25:00 [3]

Sprint,
Craft Cup, Verdal
21 minutes "sprinting"... I decided to run part of it fast to try to wake up the body a bit before the big races at the weekend. Didn't feel anything special in the legs. Still tired.
